First place in Group B at the 2022 FIFA World Cup is on the line for England against Wales on Tuesday.

England beat Iran by a 6-2 margin and played to a scoreless draw with the United States to land four points from two games.

The Three Lions own a one-point edge over Iran going into the final group matchday. They are expected to defeat Wales and top Group B.

Wales has not looked great for three halves of soccer in Qatar. The only bright spot was a second half comeback against the United States that was aided by a Gareth Bale penalty.

Wales does not have a goal from open play and there may not be many chances for the European side against one of the best teams in the world.

Wales will be at a disadvantage from the start after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off against Iran. The Welsh need a strong defensive performance and must hit England on the counter to have a chance of winning and moving into the knockout round.

England went from scoring six goals against Iran to being shutout against the United States.

The Three Lions managed just three shots on target versus the Americans and their best chance of the game did not come until Harry Kane sent a header wide off a set piece late in the second half.

Gareth Southgate's team will have the majority of the possession, and with that, should come the bulk of the scoring chances.

England also has the benefit of playing against a backup goalkeeper with Wayne Hennessey suspended for Tuesday's match.

The Group B leader would love to get Kane off the mark in Qatar. The 2018 Golden Boot winner did not score in the rout of Iran and he was quiet for stretches against the United States.

England has plenty of other attackers that will threaten the Welsh defense, including Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling, but it could be massive for its tournament hopes to get Kane going in front of the goal.

A win is expected from England to land the top spot in Group B, but how the Three Lions perform, especially in attack, will be vital for its chances beyond the group stage.

Wales Need Perfect Performance to Have Shot of Staying Alive

Wales has played the least inspiring soccer of the four teams in Group B.

The Welsh had one good half against the United States that resulted in their lone goal of the tournament.

Iran played a better match than the Welsh in the second group game, and that led to Wales sitting at the bottom of the table entering Tuesday.

Some could argue that Wales was unlucky because it conceded two late goals in second-half stoppage time, but Iran was far and away the better team in that match.

Wales could struggle for long periods of the match since England is expected to have the ball and create chances for the majority of the 90 minutes.

Not only does Wales need to remain firm in defense for 90 minutes, but it must also create significant chances of its own to try and steal a victory from England.

A Wales victory is not just the sufficient result. Wales must pull back a six-goal deficit in goal differential against England. A Wales win combined with a victory by the United States or Iran in the other Group B game would bring second place down to goal differential, where England owns the advantage.

The need to make up the goal differential from Wales' perspective could open up the match and have it lead to a handful of goals inside the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
