The 2024 pre-draft process is fully underway, and this week, many of the draft's top prospects are in the spotlight. While the 2024 Senior Bowl won't be played until Saturday, NFL teams and media members have already converged on Mobile for Senior Bowl practices.

For many evaluators, those practices are far more important than the game itself. After all, seeing how a prospect interviews, performs on the practice field and takes to coaching can provide insight that can't be gleaned from an exhibition contest.

The game itself will be exciting, though, especially for fans who can't track the daily practice reports. And for prospects, capping a strong week with a standout performance in the Senior Bowl never hurts.

Here's what you need to know about the 2024 Senior Bowl, including a look at some of the top prospects expected to be on the field this Saturday.

Quarterbacks are always in the spotlight during the pre-draft process, and this year, North Carolina's Drake Maye and USC's Caleb Williams are widely expected to be among the first players off the board.

Williams and Maye largely have their draft statuses cemented, though. In Mobile, signal-callers like Washington's Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon's Bo Nix are trying to raise their stock.

The Senior Bowl could be particularly important for Nix, as the biggest questions surrounding Penix involve his age (23) and injury history. Those questions can't exactly be answered by a few practices and a game.

Nix, on the other hand, has carried questions about his footwork and accuracy, traits that can be evaluated up close in a practice setting. Unfortunately, Nix's accuracy has been a major issue in Mobile.

From Derrik Klassen of the Bleacher Report Scouting Department:

"Nix is not normally this inaccurate on film, but it's not surprising to see him late to trigger and generally a little anxious as a thrower. Both of those traits track with what he put on film, and both have cranked up in an unfamiliar environment. If there was a competition for the best quarterback in Mobile, Nix wouldn't be first, second and probably not even third."

It's worth noting that some players simply don't practice as well as they play, and Nix will have an opportunity to potentially salvage his week on Saturday. As one of the second-tier quarterbacks in the 2024 class, his performance will be worth tracking.

Nix was the 62nd-ranked prospect on the B/R Scouting Department's January big board.

Laiatu Latu, Edge, UCLA

Nix probably isn't sneaking into the first round this April, though an early run on signal-callers could always change things. UCLA pass-rusher Laiatu Latu, on the other hand, is likely to go near the top of Round 1.

The 10th-ranked prospect on the B/R board, Latu is one of the top defensive prospects at any position. He has a tremendous combination of size and length (6'5", 261 lbs) to go with plenty of proven production.

Over the last two seasons, the former Washington transfer recorded 23.5 sacks, 34 tackles for loss and two interceptions. He has reportedly looked the part of a future NFL standout in Mobile.

"Latu looked more like a high first-round pick Wednesday. He had a few wins in one-on-ones, including a strong spin against Oregon State standout Taliese Fuaga," Matt Holder of the B/R Scouting Department wrote. "He also logged a few pressures during the team session, including one 'sack.'"

Latu will be a fun player to watch in Saturday's game, and he may give edge-needy NFL teams a glimpse of what he can do at the next level. However, he may not be able to cement his status as an early Round 1 pick until the scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Before making his way to UCLA, Latu suffered a neck injury that caused the Washington medical staff to medically retire him. It hasn't been an issue since, but combine medical checks will be a key piece of the evaluation process.

Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia

The 2024 class is expected to be deep at receiver. The B/R Scouting Department ranked five wideouts among its top 32 prospects in January—it was actually six, but Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka decided to return for another collegiate season.

Georgia's Ladd McConkey isn't among that group. However, the undersized (5'11", 187 lbs) but skilled pass-catcher has the potential to be a steal later in the draft. He tallied 30 receptions for 478 yards and two touchdowns this past season, and his traits, especially his route-running, should translate to the NFL.

"McConkey is one of the better route-runners in the 2024 draft class. His quick feet, smooth hips and instant acceleration allow him to run any route effectively," Klassen wrote.

In Mobile, McConkey has reportedly impressed up close.

"If anyone was sleeping on what McConkey is capable of heading into this week at the Senior Bowl, they aren't anymore," NFL Media's Lance Zierlein wrote. "The Bulldogs star is a thoughtful route-runner who attacks defenses with a well-defined route plan."

McConkey has a chance to generate some real buzz this week and in Saturday's game.

Again, it's a deep class with a lot of top-end talent, so McKonkey's ceiling may be as a late Day 2 prospect. If he can continue creating separation against future NFL talent, however, he may also separate himself from other middle-round receiver prospects in April's draft.
