The Big 12 tournament will likely have a first-time winner of the event in 2024.

The Houston Cougars and BYU Cougars landed in the top five seeds in their first seasons in the conference.

The Baylor Bears and Texas Tech Red Raiders, two mainstays of the league, are seeded third and fourth and have never won the Big 12 tournament.

Only the second-seeded Iowa State Cyclones have won the Big 12 tournament in their program history. They last won in 2019.

The traditional Big 12 powers, like the Kansas Jayhawks and Texas Longhorns, must win four games in four days in the new format to cut down the nets in Kansas City.

Although the Big 12 is the deepest conference in the country, only the teams at the top may be considered to win the tournament because of their easier paths.

Houston is no stranger to March success.

The Cougars won two of the last three American Athletic Conference tournaments and won multiple NCAA men's basketball tournament games in the last three years under Kelvin Sampson.

The Big 12's top seed has not lost since February 3 at Kansas and it is 14-1 in its last 15 games.

It will take a perfect performance from any of the other top seeds to down Houston in Kansas City.

BYU may be better equipped to beat Houston in the semifinals than Texas Tech since it possesses the seventh-best two-point offense and 28th-best three-point defense, per KenPom.

Baylor and Iowa State may be too worn down by the time they face Houston in the final.

The Bears will likely face Kansas in the quarterfinals, while Texas probably awaits Iowa State in that round.

An Iowa State-Baylor semifinal could be an instant Big 12 tournament classic. Baylor won the first meeting by two points on February 3 in Waco.

Baylor carries the best betting value to win the Big 12 tournament at +800, and if it gets Houston in the final, it will have plenty of motivation to enact revenge after an overtime loss to the Cougars on February 24.

Houston is the most complete team in the Big 12, and if it plays at its best, it will win its third conference tournament in four years.

Prediction: Houston over Baylor
