WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights From Sept. 20

SmackDown.
SmackDown.

Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of WWE SmackDown on September 20.

The blue brand is firmly on its new home at the USA Network after last week's debut, but WWE is still pushing hard to make every show feel like a must-see.

Here's a look at what was advertised for Friday's episode:

  • LA Knight vs. Andrade (U.S. title)
  • Bayley and Naomi vs. Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton
  • Giovanni Vinci vs. Apollo Crews
  • Footage of Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes

Let's take a look at what happened on this week's SmackDown.

LA Knight vs. Apollo Crews

Knight put his US title on the line against Andrade in this week's opening match. They began with a hesitant handshake before getting right into some fast-paced action.

The first break came early in the match since WWE aired some footage before it got started, but once the show was back, El Idolo took control.

The Megastar got in a fair amount of offense, but it felt like Andrade was in the driver's seat most of the time. Before the second break, he hit a beautiful moonsault from the top rope to the floor.

This was a high-energy exchange from two veterans who were having their first match ever. Sometimes it takes a while for chemistry to develop between two competitors, but these two found it faster than Walter White could brew up a batch.

Knight not only retained his title, but he did it clean. El Idolo did an excellent job putting him over. They had a brief standoff before Andrade raised Knight's hand.

Result: Knight defeated Andrade

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Jacob Fatu was shown beating up some security guards as he arrived.
  • Andrade hit some stiff chops that sounded brutal.
  • Knight almost dropped Andrade but powered him up in an impressive display of strength.
  • Knight and Andrade not knowing if they were going to shake hands or fist bump was funny.

Apollo Crews vs. Giovanni Vinci

WWE aired a video showing Reigns and Rhodes meeting on the 50-yard line of the stadium that will house Bad Blood. It was heavily produced with music and several cameras. It looked good but nothing about it felt genuine or impromptu.

After coming up short last week against Crews in a matter of seconds, Vinci was back this week and looking to make a good second impression.

Vinci was aggressive out of the gate and did some damage to Crews' leg in an attempt to take away his agility. Out of nowhere, Crews rolled him up for another quick victory.

If this is how WWE is trying to push a repackaged Vinci, it's a confusing strategy. The match was short and uneventful, but at least the handful of moves we saw looked good.

Result: Crews defeated Vinci

Grade: C-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Carmelo Hayes mocked Andrade backstage for losing to Knight, which led to a fight.
  • Vinci has a great suplex.

Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton vs. Bayley and Naomi

Kevin Owens looked distraught after watching the video of Reigns and Rhodes, so he decided to head to the ring to give his thoughts. Before he could say much, Fatu, Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa showed up. DIY came out to provide backup and send The Bloodline out of the ring.

Nick Aldis showed up with security and booked a six-man tag match for the main event. After a break, Naomi and Bayley took on Tiffy and Nia in a Tornado tag match.

Naomi and Jax paired up while Tiffy went after Bayley. The babyfaces took control after the initial exchange, but the heels took over before the commercial break.

This bout had a few weird moments when it seemed like one or more people didn't know what to do next, so it created an awkward atmosphere. Instead of the insanity that usually accompanies this stipulation, it felt like they were just going from spot to spot without any urgency.

Naomi cost Bayley the win when she broke up a pin, but they kept working together. Tiffany and Jax also had some communication issues and it ultimately hurt them in the end.

Naomi and Bayley both pinned Jax, so we will likely get a triple threat title match at Bad Blood.

Result: Naomi and Bayley defeated Stratton and Jax

Grade: C+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Byron Saxton is much better at his job than people give him credit for.
  • Tama finally getting some mic time was interesting. He has big Beavis energy.
  • The promotional image for the law firm that sponsors SmackDown is hilarious.
  • Nia's seated senton looked good.
  • Naomi's boots were under the bottom rope but the ref counted anyway.

Street Profits and Kevin Owens vs. Bloodline

DIY was taken out backstage, so it looked like Owens would be alone for this bout. As he made his way to the ring for the main event, The Bloodline attacked him. The Street Profits arrived to lend a hand.

After a break, the match got started with Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins joining The Prize Fighter. Loa was isolated by the babyfaces for a long time with quick tags, but he eventually tagged in Fatu to take over.

While some of what we saw here was good, it wasn't a perfect match by any means. Fatu was the standout from his team, which helped make up for Loa having some issues.

This ended in a No Contest decision once the referee lost control of everyone as a brawl broke out. DIY limped down the ramp to help KO and the Profits, but they were quickly taken out. The American Nightmare brought a chair with him and helped clear out The Bloodline.

Owens looked like he may attack Rhodes with the chair but chose not to. They shook hands, but KO looked upset.

Result: No Contest

Grade: B-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Michael Cole made a funny joke about his watch telling him he had suffered a bad fall.
  • Tanga had a slightly delayed reaction to being clotheslined.
  • The way Fatu took out Ciampa backstage was wild.
  • Fatu's moonsault looked awesome.

The Final Word

This week's SmackDown felt very different and seemed like a good indication of what WWE's production may look like going forward.

The blue brand seems to have settled into a four-match structure, which can be fine if all four bouts are good, but if one is a squash, it feels like an incomplete show.

The biggest difference was how video packages were presented. Reigns and Rhodes had a segment that was unlike anything WWE has done before, but whether it was good or not is going to be debated for a while.

Chelsea Green also had a video that was filmed to hype an upcoming match against Michin, but her's was more comedic than anything else.

Andrade and Knight put on the only candidate for the best performance, but the main event had some fun moments too. Overall, this was an uneven episode at best.
