The NHL 2024-25 regular season will begin before the weekend, but we're going to be a bit more future-focused for the time being.

The B/R hockey team is greeting the final off-day before the schedule commences by scanning championship odds for all 32 teams as laid out by our pals at DraftKings.

It's a more relevant task in some cities than others, for obvious reasons, but we nevertheless worked the room from prohibitive underdog to odds-on favorite while factoring in the most recent reasons for optimism and reasons for concern along the way.

Take a look at what we came up with and drop a thought in the comments.

32. San Jose Sharks, +40000

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 01: Macklin Celebrini #71 of the San Jose Sharks slides into the boards in the second period of their preseason game against the Utah Hockey Club at SAP Center on October 01, 2024 in San Jose, California. Let's face it, no one was putting the Sharks anywhere near championship contention anyway, but the depth of the illusion of optimism will be determined by the seriousness of the lower-body injury sustained by No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini on Tuesday night.

30. (tie) Anaheim Ducks, +20000

PLYMOUTH, MI - AUGUST 2: Beckett Sennecke #20 of Team Canada skates with the puck during the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase between Finland and Canada at USA Hockey Arena on August 2, 2024 in Plymouth, Michigan. (Photo by Michael Miller/ISI Photos/Getty Images)

Third overall pick Beckett Sennecke is a key piece of the future for the Ducks, but he had to wait to show glimpses in the preseason thanks to a stress fracture in his right foot—sustained in off-ice training—that kept him out of action until a Wednesday debut against Utah.

30. (tie) Columbus Blue Jackets, +20000

COLUMBUS, OHIO - SEPTEMBER 28: Adam Fantilli #19 of the Columbus Blue Jackets warms up prior to the preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres at Nationwide Arena on September 28, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Mowry/Getty Images)

Adam Fantilli, who turns 20 on 12 October, had 12 goals and 27 points in 49 games as a rookie. He seems poised to raise his level in year two as a regular after notching team bests in goals (4) and points (6) through four preseason games.

29. Chicago Blackhawks, +15000

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - SEPTEMBER 25: Connor Bedard #98 of the Chicago Blackhawks warms up prior to a preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center on September 25, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

There's no expectation for relevance, but it should be interesting to watch year two of the Connor Bedard project in Chicago. Still just 19, he had 22 goals and 61 points in 69 games as a rookie and is surrounded these days by the likes of Teuvo Teräväinen and Tyler Bertuzzi.

28. Montreal Canadiens, +12000

MONTREAL, QC - SEPTEMBER 28: Patrik Laine (92) of the Montreal Canadiens lays on the ice after being injured during the first period of the NHL pre-season game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens on Sept 28, 2024, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, QC(Photo by Vincent Ethier/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

The Canadiens took a turn for the better with the trade that brought Patrik Laine from Columbus for a player and a pick, but it veered off course with a knee-on-knee hit against Toronto that yielded a sprain and will keep him on the sidelines for two to three months.

27. Calgary Flames, +7500

CALGARY, AB - SEPTEMBER 30: Calgary Flames Right Wing Blake Coleman (20) celebrates a goal with teammates during the first period of an NHL preseason game between the Calgary Flames and the Seattle Kraken on September 30, 2024, at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, AB. It's been two years since the Pacific Division champion Flames were eliminated from the playoffs by their rivals from Edmonton, and to suggest it's been a freefall since is being kind. Could they squeak into the playoffs? Maybe. But winning a first Cup since 1989? Not a chance.

25. (tie) Philadelphia Flyers, +6000

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - SEPTEMBER 26: Samuel Ersson #33 of the Philadelphia Flyers makes a save against the New York Islanders during the third period of the preseason game at the Wells Fargo Center on September 26, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Former fifth-round pick Samuel Ersson elevated to the No. 1 position in the Philadelphia net last season and has staked his claim to keeping it for 2024-25, stopping 67 of 69 shots (.971 save percentage) across two preseason starts. He was 23-19-7 in 51 games in 2023-24.

25. (tie) Washington Capitals, +6000

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - SEPTEMBER 24: Pierre-Luc Dubois #80 of the Washington Capitals skates against the Boston Bruins during the third period of a preseason game at the TD Garden on September 24, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Bruins won 4-2. (Photo by Richard T Gagnon/Getty Images)

Even if you assume Pierre-Luc Dubois is a revelation in the nation's capital and Alex Ovechkin carries a full season's worth of goal-scoring momentum into an all-time NHL record, it's still nothing close to enough for a second title or a real push to get close to it.

22. (tie) Utah Hockey Club, +5500

SAN JOSE, CA - OCTOBER 01: Utah Hockey Club right wing Kailer Yamamoto (56) scores a goal against San Jose Sharks goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood (29) during a preseason NHL game between the Utah Hockey Club and the San Jose Sharks on October 1, 2024 at SAP Center at San Jose in San Jose, CA. (Photo by Matthew Huang/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

There's plenty of reason to like the artists formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes, because there's little reason to believe 21 teams are better. As for personnel, Kailer Yamamoto made a case to make the roster on a PTO with two goals against San Jose on Tuesday.

22. (tie) Seattle Kraken, +5500

ST. PAUL, MN - APRIL 18: Seattle Kraken forward Matty Beniers (10) celebrates his power play goal during the second period of an NHL game between the Minnesota Wild and Seattle Kraken on April 18, 2024, at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. (Photo by Nick Wosika/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

It's year four for the Kraken in Seattle and the perception is that they'll remain on the outside looking in when it comes to real contention. They were 17 points out of the final Western berth last season, and it's difficult to believe they'll cover that ground, let alone surpass it.

22. (tie) St. Louis Blues, +5500

ST. LOUIS, MO - SEPTEMBER 28: St. Louis Blues center Dylan Holloway (81) is congratulated by teammates after scoring in the third period during a preseason NHL game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues, on September 28, 2024, at Enterprise Center, St. Louis, MO. (Photo by Keith Gillett/IconSportswire)

Expecting even a 22nd overall finish might be a bit optimistic for these Blues, who've not shown much reason for excitement with a desultory preseason start that's yielded four losses in five games. Looking for a positive? Dylan Holloway scored two goals in his first game.

21. Buffalo Sabres, +5000

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC - OCTOBER 02: Rasmus Dahlin #26 of the Buffalo Sabres attends practice prior to the 2024 NHL Global Series Czechia on October 02, 2024 in Prague, Czech Republic. (Photo by Ben Jackson/NHLI via Getty Images)

There was held breath around Buffalo when star defenseman and new team captain Rasmus Dahlin missed the start of training camp, but he's back healthy and made the trip to Europe for the opening weekend. It won't yield a Cup for the Sabres, but the playoffs? Maybe.

19. (tie) New York Islanders, +4500

ELMONT, NEW YORK - APRIL 25: Ilya Sorokin #30 of the New York Islanders leads the team out to play against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game Three of the First Round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs at UBS Arena on April 25, 2024 in Elmont, New York. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

If you're hoping for the Islanders to do anything more than compete for a lower-tier playoff spot in the East, you'll need to hope Ilya Sorokin is in top form. The 29-year-old had back surgery in the offseason and has been skating on his own away from training camp.

19. Pittsburgh Penguins, +4500

SUDBURY, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 29: Kris Letang #58 and Sydney Crosby #87 of the Pittsburgh Penguins interact during the second period of the NHL Kraft Hockeyville pre-season game against the Ottawa Senators at Sudbury Community Arena on September 29, 2024 in Sudbury, Ontario. (Photo by Nicole Osborne/NHLI via Getty Images)

Pittsburgh's grizzled core four—Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson—is still good enough to compete for a title. But there's not enough talent among the other players on the roster to do much beyond hope for a No. 8 playoff spot.

17. (tie) Detroit Red Wings, +4000

CHICAGO, IL - OCTOBER 03: Detroit Red Wings center Nate Danielson (29) controls the puck during a game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks on October 3, 2023 at the United Center in Chicago, IL. (Photo by Melissa Tamez/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

It won't yield a Cup and may not even end an eight-season playoff drought, but the Red Wings have gotten a look at the future with the impressions made by Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson, who combined for five points in their first five preseason games.

17. (tie) Ottawa Senators, +4000

MONTREAL, CANADA - JANUARY 23: Arber Xhekaj #72 of the Montreal Canadiens holds back Tim Stutzle #18 of the Ottawa Senators during the second period at the Bell Centre on January 23, 2024 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images)

Wait and see just how costly Tuesday's preseason game at Montreal was for the Senators, who saw Tim Stützle leave after a hit by Arber Xhekaj, and Brady Tkachuk exit after he also got involved with the same player following the play. Defenseman Thomas Chabot also left early.

16. Minnesota Wild, +3500

SAINT PAUL, MN - APRIL 18: Kirill Kaprizov #97 of the Minnesota Wild celebrates his goal against the Seattle Kraken during the game at the Xcel Energy Center on April 18, 2024 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. (Photo by Bruce Kluckhohn/NHLI via Getty Images)

It's probably no better than a first-round exit for the Wild, but owner Craig Leipold is bullish for the future if he can keep Kirill Kaprizov past 2025-26. "Nobody will offer more money than us, or longer," he said. "So all we have to do is prove to him that we want to win."

14. (tie) Winnipeg Jets, +2500

WINNIPEG, CANADA - APRIL 21: Associate coach Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets points out instructions during third period action against the Colorado Avalanche in Game One of the First Round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Canada Life Centre on April 21, 2024 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It could be because of injuries or it could be a product of new coach Scott Arniel's new philosophies. Either way, the Jets have tinkered with the idea of rotation three "skill" lines alongside one "checking" line. "I want to see how it goes," he told the Winnipeg Sun.

14. (tie) Tampa Bay Lightning, +2500

SUNRISE, FL - SEPTEMBER 30: Jake Guentzel #59 of the Tampa Bay Lightning skates prior to the preseason game against the Florida Panthers at the Amerant Bank Arena on September 30, 2024 in Sunrise, Florida. (Photo by Joel Auerbach/Getty Images)

The Lightning represent the line between teams with unrealistic hopes for a title and those with what could be considered an actual chance if things break right. Jake Guentzel helps replace Steven Stamkos' numbers if not his presence, and other veterans remain too.

13. Los Angeles Kings, +2200

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 25: Drew Doughty #8 of the Los Angeles Kings reacts after suffering an injury during the first period against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on September 25, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Zak Krill/NHLI via Getty Images)

Expecting the Kings to go from three first-round exits against Edmonton to a banner raise is difficult enough to fathom, but it got even harder when defenseman Drew Doughty suffered a fractured ankle that will keep him sidelined for at least a month. A good start is vital.

9. (tie) Boston Bruins, +1800

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - SEPTEMBER 24: Joonas Korpisalo #70 of the Boston Bruins tends goal against the Washington Capitals during the second period of a preseason game at the TD Garden on September 24, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Bruins won 4-2. (Photo by Richard T Gagnon/Getty Images)

The Bruins will be probably fine thanks to the depth of talent on the roster, but there's clearly an issue in goal, where anointed No. 1 Jeremy Swayman is still not signed. That likely leaves Joonas Korpisalo, who came from Ottawa in a trade, to begin the season as the starter.

9. (tie) Nashville Predators, +1800

TAMPA, FL - FEBRUARY 04: Vegas Golden Knights center Jonathan Marchessault (81) is defended by Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos (91) in the 3rd period of the NHL game between the Vegas Golden Knights and Tampa Bay Lightning on February 04, 2020 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL. (Photo by Mark LoMoglio/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

The Predators are most people's champions of the offseason, and they'll be looking to get over a first-round hurdle that has tripped them up in each playoff appearance since 2018. It would take a lot of things to break right for them to win a Cup, but it's not a ridiculous suggestion.

9. (tie) Vancouver Canucks, +1800

EDMONTON, CANADA SEPTEMBER 30: Kevin Lankinen #32 of the Vancouver Canucks plays the puck behind his net in the second period of a preseason game at Rogers Place on September 30, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. (Photo by Leila Devlin/Getty Images)

The Canucks won the Pacific and pushed Edmonton to the limit in the second round, but TSN's Mike Johnson is suggesting a step back due to a number of career years. "The reason they're called career years is because they happen once in your career," he told One Big Question.

9. (tie) Vegas Golden Knights, +1800

OTTAWA, CANADA - FEBRUARY 24: Chandler Stephenson #20 of the Vegas Golden Knights celebrates his second period goal against the Ottawa Senators with teammates Jonathan Marchessault #81, Alec Martinez #23 and William Karlsson #71 at Canadian Tire Centre on February 24, 2024 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Golden Knights could probably make the playoffs on muscle memory alone and thus be in real contention for another championship, but the absence of depth after the exits of Jonathan Marchessault, Chandler Stephenson and other forwards is a legitimate concern.

4. (tie) Carolina Hurricanes, +1300

SUNRISE, FL - SEPTEMBER 28: Gleb Trikozov #73 of the Carolina Hurricanes skates by the team bench to celebrate with teammates after scoring a second period goal against the Florida Panthers during a preseason game at the Amerant Bank Arena on September 28, 2024 in Sunrise, Florida. Jack Roslovic wasn't exactly a high-profile free-agent signing in July, but if he's able to be successful sliding onto Carolina's top line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis, it will be a boon for a team typically known for its defensive prowess.

4. (tie) Colorado Avalanche, +1300

Need evidence that preseason isn't everything? Look at the Avalanche, winless in their first four games. If you think that means they won't be a factor, think again. Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon assisted on a power-play goal four minutes into their first appearance.

4. (tie) New Jersey Devils, +1300

The Devils were 23rd overall last season and made a slew of moves to make people believe they'll return to the form that had them third overall in 2022-23. But the product of one of those moves, defenseman Brett Pesce, didn't make the trip for the weekend in Prague.

4. (tie) New York Rangers, +1300

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 03: Artemi Panarin #10 of the New York Rangers celebrates after scoring a goal in the first period against the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden on April 3, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Jared Silber/NHLI via Getty Images)

The good news is that the Rangers are the defending Presidents Trophy winners and should continue to be elite. The bad news is that their perennial MVP candidate, Artemi Panarin, has left two preseason games with injuries and didn't play in two games in between.

4. (tie) Toronto Maple Leafs, +1300

The Maple Leafs haven't seen a final four since 2002, but it doesn't keep them from a number that suggests they're a favorite. It'll depend, as usual, on the production of the pricey core four and the distraction prompted by Mitch Marner, whose six-year deal runs out in June.

3. Dallas Stars, +1100

If you're looking for a team that's not the morning-line favorite, it would be difficult to find a better option than the Stars, who are as skilled and deep as any of the other 31. Keeping Matt Duchene in the fold and adding Colin Blackwell to the fourth line was a boon for GM Jim Nill.

2. Florida Panthers, +1000

They were an eighth seed and made the Cup Final two springs ago. Then they won it as the third-best regular-season team in the East last year. So, it doesn't matter where the Panthers are placed going into 2024-25, there's a good chance they'll play relevant games.

1. Edmonton Oilers, +800

So, Connor McDavid has officially done everything there is in the NHL. Except one thing. The Oilers got to the Game 7 brink in Florida in June and added forward strength with free agents Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, but concern remains about the quality of the defense.
