Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff were among the top seeds who cruised into the second round on Monday at the 2025 Australian Open.

Alcaraz and men's top seed Jannik Sinner each advanced through the first round with straight-set victories.

Djokovic needed a little more court time to book his spot in the second round, as he dropped his first set of the tournament to American wild-card entry Nishesh Basavareddy. Djokovic won the next three sets to take the match.

Gauff faced little trouble against fellow American Sofia Kenin to move to the second round in straight sets.

In fact, all three American women seeded in the top 10 won in straight sets on Monday. Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins also had easy wins in their openers in Melbourne.

The biggest story from Monday's play was Djokovic dropping a set to an American wild-card entry.

The No. 7 seed rebounded easily in the second set and went on to win the match with little trouble, but losing the first set of the tournament was a bit of a shock, especially when you compare his result to Alcaraz and Sinner.

Sinner was taken to tiebreaks in the first and second sets of his match with Nicolas Jarry, but he won those sets and then took the third set with ease.

Alcaraz had the easiest time of the three high-profile players, as he only lost seven games across three sets.

Djokovic, Alcaraz and Sinner have combined to win the last 10 men's tennis majors, but a maximum of two of them will be around for the semifinals. Djokovic and Alcaraz will meet in the quarterfinals if they keep winning.

Americans Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul won their first matches of the tournament on Monday. Taylor Fritz, the highest-seeded American at No. 4, plays his first-round match on Tuesday.

The three American women seeded in the top 10 cruised into the second round.

Gauff, Pegula and Collins all produced straight-set victories on an easy day for the top seeded players.

Gauff and Pegula could play each other in the quarterfinals and they both reside in the same side of the bracket as No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Collins appears to have the easier draw to the semifinals right now. She is in the bottom half of the bracket along with No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, who also won easily on Monday.

One other American, Emma Navarro, is a top-10 seed. She will be in action on Tuesday as the first round wraps up.

Two notable upsets occurred on Monday, as former major winners Jelena Ostapenko and Victoria Azarenka were bounced from the event.

Ostapenko's loss means Gauff will not play a top-16 player until at least the quarterfinals, while Azarenka's defeat made Swiatek's path to the final eight look easier on paper.
