Learner Tien pulled off the most stunning upset of the 2025 Australian Open on Thursday.

The American qualifier took down three-time Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev in a fifth-set tiebreak.

Medvedev is the highest-seeded men's player to lose a match through two rounds.

Tien is one of 11 Americans to make it into the third round. Six men and five women are through and eight of them are seeded players.

All five of the American women left are seeded inside the top 20, including Madison Keys, Emma Navarro and Danielle Collins, all of whom won on Thursday.

Taylor Fritz is the best American hope to win on the men's side, and Tien's upset of Medvedev opened a clearer path for the No. 4 seed to make a deep run in Melbourne.

Learner Tien's upset of Daniil Medvedev was one of the most unexpected results in recent Australian Open history.

Medvedev reached three of the last four finals in Melbourne and has appeared in six hard-court Grand Slam finals.

Tien's victory opened up the top half of the men's singles bracket in favor of Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner.

Fritz produced his second straight-set win of the tournament on Thursday. He is one of three seeded players left in his quarter of the draw.

Sinner, the top seed, needed four sets to land in the third round. The Italian is on a collision course to face Australian Alex De Minaur in the quarters.

Fritz and Tien are five of six American men left in the draw. Five of them reside in the top half of the draw. Three of those players are unseeded. Fritz could play No. 21 seed Ben Shelton in the fourth round if they both win in the third round.

Madison Keys, Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro added to the group of five American women in the third round with second-round triumphs on Thursday.

All three Americans needed three sets to join Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the next part of the bracket, All five American women still alive are seeded inside the top 20.

Keys and Collins will face off in the third round in what has to be viewed as the toughest quarter in the draw where seven seeded players are still alive, including No. 6 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini.

Navarro has a tough matchup ahead as well against Ons Jabeur. The three-time Grand Slam finalist is unseeded because she is coming off an injury, but she will still be a tough foe for the eighth-seeded American.

Iga Swiatek, who cruised in straight sets on Thursday, has the easiest path to the quarterfinals of any seeded player. There are no seeded players left in her portion of the draw. She would be Navarro's quarterfinal opponent if the American gets that far.
