Rutgers Football: 3 Greg Schiano Attributes the Scarlet Knights Won't Miss

Rutgers heads into a new era now that former head coach Greg Schiano has moved on. The Scarlet Knights have a few things to be thankful for now that Schiano is no longer on the sidelines.

The team will get a fresh start with new Head Coach Kyle Flood and hope that he does not have the same negatives effect as Schiano. Schiano did build Rutgers into a respectable football program, but there will be a few attributes the team will not miss.

3: Struggling Offense

Schiano was once a defensive coordinator at the University of Miami, so defensive coaching was his forte. However, offense was far from it.

In 2011, the Scarlet Knights were in the bottom 50 in the key offensive categories. They were ranked 65th in points per game, 89th in total offense and 99th in yards per game.

Now that Schiano is gone, it will be interesting to see if the offense can finally become consistent.

2: Game Managing

Schiano was a great recruiter, but one of the biggest knocks against him was the fact that he was a poor game manager. He made many questionable in-game decisions during his time at Rutgers.

Schiano was often out-coached by his counterparts, and was never able to elevate Rutgers over that dreaded hump of mediocrity.

1. Underachieving

Schiano was able to turn the Rutgers program from nothing to something, But how much did the Scarlet Knights become?

Under Schiano, Rutgers went 28-48 in the Big East, arguably the weakest BCS conference in the nation. The Knights never won the Big East conference under his direction, and went 1-23 against teams ranked in the Top 25. They also went 4-17 against teams ranked at game time, and never came close to contending for a BCS bowl game.

Schiano left the Scarlet Knights with a foundation, now we will see whether or not his departure opened the door to BCS success.
