Cal Football Recruiting: Latest News on Potential Prospects

Still reeling from the loss of coach Tosh Lupoi, the California Golden Bears have been trying to pick up the broken pieces as far as recruiting goes.

Lupoi's decision to bolt Berkeley for a spot on the Washington Huskies' coaching staff came as a hit to coach Jeff Tedford and Co.

As recruits began to head elsewhere, Cal struggled to maintain an elite recruiting class.

Still, the Bears have some decent prospects eager to shine at Memorial Stadium.

Here is the latest breakdown of the Bears' recruits.

Four-star recruit Jared Goff is among the Bears’ highest rated prospects. 

Ranked 15th overall at his position and 29th in the state of California, Goff is a quarterback that plays well in a pro-style offense. 

Goff has been stellar for Marin Catholic and hopes to continue his success in the East Bay.

With Zach Kline in the fold, there is the potential for an intriguing battle for the role of starting quarterback. 

Nevertheless, the Bears have struggled behind center since Aaron Rodgers went to the NFL. Goff will be welcomed with open arms.

Three-star recruit DB Shon Akins could be a diamond in the rough for the Golden Bears.

Cal has been looking for an elite DB with speed and strength to handle the quick receivers in the Pac-12.

At 5'9" and 168 pounds, Akins will have to compensate for his height with speed. Although his 40 time was clocked at 4.47 seconds, Akins is deceivingly quick.

With the secondary in something of a disarray, Akins could emerge as a leader for the Bears in 2013. 

At 5'10" and 175 pounds, DB Trey Cheek has the build to become a lockdown cornerback.

A lanky back, Cheek can use his height and his long arms to bother tall receivers.

Pairing Cheek in the secondary along Shon Akin could give the Bears the sort of over the top punch that they have so desperately yearned for.

In the last couple years, the Bears have had some serviceable defensive backs in Marc Anthony and Josh Hill. If Cheek hits the ground running, he and Akins could be quite the surprise for the Bears.

Foothill phenom Ray Hudson has the capability to become a bona-fide stud at tight end for the Bears' roster in 2013.

At 6'4" and 235 pounds, Hudson has the body to take a beating. But with a 4.6 second 40, he also has the footwork to evade slower defensive linemen.

The Bears have lacked steady production from the tight end spot in the last couple years.

Anthony Miller was above average and Spencer Hagan has been decent, but in the loaded Pac-12, every team needs as many offensive threats as possible.

No one is asking Hudson to be the next Tony Gonzalez, but consistent production over the middle and on the outside would make life a lot easier for whoever the Bears decide to start at quarterback.

The Narbonne receiver from Harbor City, A.J. Richardson will be hoping to become another explosive Cal wideout.

For the last few years, the Bears have boasted at least one elite receiver. 

From Marvin Jones to Keenan Allen, Richardson will need to step up if he hopes to rival the production of the steady receivers that came before him.

At 6'1" and 185 pounds, Richardson is tall enough to go over the top of shorter backs. His weight is concerning, however, as he will need to bulk up if he is able to play at a physical level.

Nevertheless, Richardson has the game to compete in the Pac-12. Depending on the quarterback play, he could have an illustrious career in blue and gold.
