Western Kentucky Hilltoppers' Top Performers in Week 3

Beating an SEC opponent is not an easy task. 

That proved to be true for Western Kentucky as it took them overtime to knock off instate rival Kentucky, 32-31. 

Only needing a PAT to send the game into a second OT, WKU decided to go for the win by sending out their offense for a two-point conversion. One trick play later, they were celebrating a huge victory. 

The Hilltoppers have now improved to 2-1 on the season with their only loss coming to the nation's number one team, Alabama. 

Though it is a team game, there were a few players that made it all possible for Western with their outstanding performances.

Let's take a look at the top MVPs:

Senior quarterback Kawaun Jakes is an entirely different player then he was in his previous three years. 

Besides showing an incredible amount of confidence as the team's play-caller, Jakes has taken his skill set to a whole new level. 

In their "upset' win over UK, Jakes threw for 160 yards while completing 16 of his 22 passes, good enough for a 72.7 completion percentage. 

He also threw for one touchdown and added an interception to match.  

Jakes made the plays using his arm to lead his team to the win, but his biggest moment came as a receiver. 

On the two-point conversion attempt, Jakes threw a screen pass to his right, then headed to the left side of the field to get out of the way of the play.

Or so it seemed.

The receiver who caught the screen pass dropped back, turned and fired it back across field to Jakes who walked in to the endzone, capturing the win. 

Once an SEC player himself as a member of the Florida Gators, Jonathan Dowling felt at home in Saturday's game against Kentucky. 

The Sophomore safety proved just that by picking off UK's Maxwell Smith not once, not twice, but three times in his teams surprise win. 

Dowling's three interceptions are a career high and it was the first time he has recorded a multi-pick game. 

Adding those with the interception he had in the season opener against Austin Peay, the 6-3 ballhawk now holds a share of the lead for the most in the NCAA, with four. 

He had a total of 70 return yards, with one of the returns setting his team up for a two yard touchdown. 

Besides stepping in front of passes, Dowling also recorded four tackles in the game. 

His lone slip-up was a fumble during the return of pick number three.

Without a doubt, Antonio Andrews had the biggest night of anyone on the field. 

Andrews, who was said to be the team's Reggie Bush by head coach Willie Taggart, proved that to be true by doing a little bit of everything on Saturday. 

As a running back, the junior picked up 125 yards on the ground scoring three times. He proved just how durable he can be by carrying the ball 34 times, more than twice the amount of carries he has seen all year. 

If he wasn't carrying the ball, he was catching passes. He hauled in three receptions for 36 yards, his longest reception being a 15-yard grab. 

With that not being enough touches, Andrews also had two kick returns and a punt return totaling 72 yards. 

All three added up gave him 233 all-purpose yards for the night. 

As it stands, Western's workhorse is averaging 197.67 APY a game, which is good enough for sixth in all of college football. 

Putting the point on the exclamation mark that was his game, Andrews was the aforementioned receiver who tossed the game-winning two-point conversion back to Jakes.
