Pacquiao vs. Marquez Results: Grading All Fighters from Fight Night
Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather is the fight fans are clamoring to see, however, from what we saw last night, boxing will be fine without this match.
With the exception of the knockout victory, all fights ended with a unanimous decision, but the real question is; was I entertained? My answer would be yes, yes and...yes. I'm sure many at home can say the same.
The headliner provided another great chapter in what has been a thrilling rivalry between two boxing greats in Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
And let's not forget Mr. Gamboa and his infamous promoter, rap star 50 Cent. How about the undefeated Mercito Gesta? Snookie, maybe?
It was a thrilling night for boxing fans.
Here are grades for all the fights on fight night!
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Michael Farenas
Gamboa defeated Farenas for the interim WBA super featherweight title. It was a unanimous victory for Gamboa (117-109, 118-108, 117-108).
What a fight folks! The headline was Marquez-Pacquiao, but this proved to be an exciting addition to fight night.
Gamboa used his overwhelming speed and power to eventually hold on for victory against a very aggressive Farenas. He had Farenas countering all night.
Both fighters started a bit slow, but the match picked up in Round 3 (late Round 2). Gamboa's quickness proved to be a issue for Farenas, as he had the Cuban fighter countering air for the most part.
Farenas did however get some nice counter punches and landed a few heavy one's in Round 4—by far his best round.
Gamboa: B+
Farenas: B
Javier Fortuna vs. Patrick Hyland
Fortuna defeated Hyland for the WBA interim featherweight title. It was a unanimous victory for Fortuna (118-110, 116-112, 115-113).
This was an exciting match, as both boxers performed at a high level. We saw a lot of variety here. Fortuna really dominated the early rounds, but Hyland was able to get back into the fray in the middle rounds.
From the onset of the match, it seemed like it was Fortuna's fight to lose, but Hyland did a great job recovering after a disappointing start.
Fortuna: B+
Hyland: B-
Miguel Vazquez vs. Mercito Gesta
Vazquez holds onto his IBF lightweight title after defeating Gesta. It was a unanimous victory for Vazquez (117-111, 119-109, 118-110).
Vazquez was favored in this match, but the talented Gesta was not to be taken lightly. At least, that was the perception heading into the match.
Gesta was up and down in this match. He was aggressive at times, but he also lacked focus during crucial stretches of this match.
Vazquez looked composed and from the onset, had a great game plan that really focused on many of his strengths.
Gesta was disappointing, but he's still young.
Vazquez: A-
Gesta: C+
Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao
Juan Manuel Marquez stunned the MGM crowd and many at home by securing a knockout victory over rival, Manny Pacquiao.
The biggest fight of the night ended with as much excitement as it began. Juan Manuel Marquez took some shots, but he delivered the biggest one––a knockout punch––in the sixth round to end the night.
This could be one for the books.
The match seemed destined to go to Manny, and for a minute there, the bloodied Marquez looked to be wavering. It was a great overhand right to end a great match.
Marquez: A
Pacquiao: B+
