England vs. India: Player Ratings for MS Dhoni's XI After 3rd Test

India, on Thursday, succumbed to a humiliating 266-run defeat to England in the third Test at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton.

In doing so, India lost a hard-earned 1-0 lead in the five-match series, and they did so without putting up even a bit of resistance.

All the bravado and individual brilliance from Lord's went missing, and it was hard to believe that it was the Indian team that turned up at Southampton.

Here are the player ratings for MS Dhoni's XI for the match.

The number of runs scored and wickets and catches taken will obviously play a significant role in determining a player's match rating. However, the following factors also affect it:

1. Runs scored or wickets taken in match-saving or similar under-pressure situations count more than otherwise.

2. The captain will be judged on his performance in the field in addition to his other contributions with bat or ball.

3. Moments of brilliance or game-changing performances get more credit.

4. Performing in conditions that don't suit a player's skill set boosts a player's rating.

5. Irresponsible acts or those of poor judgement significantly affect a player's rating.

MS Dhoni adopted a very defensive approach to this match, right from going with an extra batsman to asking his bowlers to bowl a negative line.

After all the praise he received for his captaincy at Lord's, Dhoni was a completely different person at Southampton.

He scored a half-century with the bat in the first innings, but his tactics when England were batting played a large role in India conceding such a large lead.

Shikhar Dhawan seems to have reached the end of the rope in this series. After six consecutive failures, it would be really surprising if he keeps his place at Manchester.

Dhawan has looked extremely uncomfortable at the top of the order, and it is time India gave a chance to Gautam Gambhir.

Murali Vijay, India's best batsman in this series, seemed to be on his way to another long innings, but a rare moment of indecisiveness led him to throw it all away.

In the second innings, Vijay committed the cardinal sin of getting himself run out in a situation where India needed him at the crease.

He will want to consider this match as a bad dream and move on.

Cheteshwar Pujara continued with his habit of setting himself in but unable to convert his start into a big score in the first innings.

It got worse for India's No. 3 in the second innings, when he lost his wicket to the part-time spin of Moeen Ali.

A big innings is always around the corner when it comes to a batsman of his skill and temperament, but it is up to him how he overcomes these false starts and carries on.

Virat Kohli reached his highest score of 39 in this series but has overall been a failure.

Kohli came into the series off some terrific form in South Africa and New Zealand, and was expected to lead India's batting in this series. However, England have found and exploited his weakness outside off-stump and have done well to keep him quiet.

India will need their No. 4 to fire soon if they are to get a move on in this series.

Ajinkya Rahane has been a surprise package in India's middle order and was the lone tree that stood up to the hurricane at Southampton.

He did get out to a poor shot in the first innings, which was a rare moment of irresponsibility in what has been an extremely disciplined performance in this series.

The extra batsman experiment by MS Dhoni has miserably failed. 

Rohit Sharma had his big chance but failed to show up. The shot he played to get out in the first innings deserves an axe, and it is probably the last we have seen of him this series.

Ravindra Jadeja was asked to ball a defensive line in the first innings but still went for 153 runs and had just two wickets to show for his efforts.

In the second innings, he bowled a much more positive line and got some help off the rough, thereby troubling the batsmen.

He will hope that he is not asked to bowl the middle-and-leg line again.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the revelation from the Indian camp in this series, had a relatively quiet game and wasn't as menacing as he was in the earlier two games.

Mohammed Shami has lost all the zing and accuracy from nine months ago during his debut series at home and has appeared helpless as a bowler.

It won't be surprising if he is dropped for the next game.

Pankaj Singh could have had three wickets to his name in his debut Test. Instead, he bowled 47 overs in the match without any rewards.

Pankaj will consider himself extremely unlucky for not registering his maiden Test wicket but bowled a tight line and had good pace for most parts.
