England vs. India: Player Ratings for MS Dhoni's XI After 4th Test
India suffered their second humiliation in the five-match series against England after being thumped by an innings and 54 runs inside three days in Manchester.
If the loss in Southampton was bad, the visitors' performance in Manchester was abysmal and rather shocking.
India now have one more match to play and a chance to draw the series 2-2. If they want to do so, most of the players are going to have to perform significantly better than they have done in the last couple of games.
Here are India's player ratings for the fourth Test.
Criteria for Ratings
The number of runs scored and wickets and catches taken will obviously play a significant role in determining a player's match rating. However, the following factors also affect it:
1. Runs scored or wickets taken in match-saving or similar under-pressure situations count more than otherwise.
2. The captain will be judged on his performance in the field in addition to his other contributions with bat or ball.
3. Moments of brilliance or game-changing performances get more credit.
4. Performing in conditions that don't suit a player's skill set boosts a player's rating.
5. Irresponsible acts or those of poor judgement significantly affect a player's rating.
MS Dhoni (captain)
With the bat: 71, 27
With the gloves: One catch
Rating: 6/10
India captain MS Dhoni played possibly his best-ever innings away from home after his team collapsed from 8-0 to 8-4 in the first innings.
His 71 off 133 balls was a brave, gutsy knock which only someone with his character could have essayed.
However, all of Dhoni's grit went missing when he donned the captain's hat when India fielded. Some of the bowling changes and field placements were bizarre and seemed mindless to the lay man.
His glovework has also been shoddy in this series, and he missed an easy run-out opportunity in this match.
Murali Vijay
With the bat: 0, 18
Rating: 1/10
After the high of the first two matches of the series, Murali Vijay has had a couple of poor games.
His duck during the first innings in Manchester would have hurt, and India need Vijay to rediscover his monk-like temperament for the final game of the series.
Gautam Gambhir
With the bat: 4, 18
Rating: 1/10
Gautam Gambhir got his first game since the winter of 2012-13 in Manchester, and a lot was expected of him in this match.
However, he was found wanting against the pace and bounce generated by the English pacers and did not look at all convincing.
Cheteshwar Pujara
With the bat: 0, 17
Rating: 1/10
Cheteshwar Pujara, supposed to be India's middle-order mainstay in this series, has seen his form dip from mediocre to poor as we move into the final match.
His dismissal in the first innings, during which he was one of India's six batsmen to fall for a duck, was so unlike a Pujara dismissal, as he swiped at a ball way outside off stump.
He was unlucky to be given a harsh decision in the second innings, but he will be disappointed with how he has performed so far.
Virat Kohli
With the bat: 0, 7

After a blistering start as India's new No. 4 in South Africa and New Zealand following the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli appears to be succumbing to the enormous pressure on his shoulders.
He was expected to be India's best batsman in this series but has been downright appalling, with his nicks getting attracted to the slip cordon like a magnet.
Ajinkya Rahane
With the bat: 24, 1
Rating: 4/10
Against all odds, Ajinkya Rahane has been India's best batsman in this series and has relied on his sound technique and temperament.
The Old Trafford Test was one of his rare poor outings, as he unnecessarily threw his wicket away to the slips in the first innings following a solid resistance for 52 balls to score 24.
His wicket in the second innings, however, was the result of a superb caught and bowled by Moeen Ali.
Ravindra Jadeja
With the bat: 0, 4
With the ball: 1-36
Rating: 2/10
India are fast realising that Ravindra Jadeja is not such a lucrative option as a part-time spinning all-rounder in non-subcontinental conditions.
His bowling hasn't looked potent, though a lot of that is down to him being asked to bowl a negative line, but he is gaining a reputation of being a haphazard, careless batsman.
Ravichandran Ashwin

With the bat: 40, 46*
Rating: 7/10
After sitting out the first three Test matches, Ravi Ashwin finally got a run at Old Trafford and made the most of it.
After Dhoni, Ashwin was India's best batsman in the Test match, with a couple of forties to his name, and he is a much more reliable batsman than Jadeja.
He did not get many overs to bowl due to the nature of the pitch, but that could change at the Oval, which won't be as pace friendly.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
With the ball: 3-75
With the bat: 0, 10
Rating: 6/10
Easily India's most reliable and accurate bowler in this series, the tourists will be hoping Bhuvneshwar Kumar has not burned out, as they will require him to be at his best at the Oval.
His batting form has slipped in the last couple of matches, but he will be one of the first names on the team sheet on current form.
Varun Aaron
With the ball: 3-97
With the bat: 1*, 9
Rating: 6/10
Playing his first Test in more than three years, Varun Aaron's selection at Old Trafford was considered a gamble, but the lanky speedster has justified it well.
Regularly clocking upward of 140 kilometres per hour, Aaron brings with him the extra attacking element that was missing in India's pace attack.
His wicket of Moeen Ali with a ball that viciously swung back in to the left-hander at breakneck pace was one of the few unplayable deliveries that an Indian bowler has bowled this series.
Pankaj Singh
With the ball: 2-113
With the bat: 0, 0
Rating: 5/10
After 69 long and fruitless overs since making his debut in Southampton, in Manchester Pankaj Singh finally experienced what it is to take a Test wicket.
His figures of two for 113 do not do justice to his hard work and resilience, but he could yet miss the next game if Ishant Sharma regains full fitness.
