4 Issues to Be Decided on Liga MX Final Weekend

There's still a lot at stake in the Liga MX, and everything will be defined in Matchday 17 of the Clausura tournament.

There are five available spots for the playoffs, but 10 teams still have a chance to make it to the postseason and try to make a run for the title.

The relegation race seems to be done, but it isn't over until it's over, even though everything tells us Universidad de Guadalajara will return to the Ascenso MX.

Finally, there are three players fighting to secure the topscorer honor and at least five trying to take over the general-table lead.

Let's take a look.

The Leader

So far, there are three teams with 28 points: Veracruz, Tigres and Atlas. The goal difference plays a key role here, as Tiburones Rojos sit atop the general table with plus-11.

But Tigres have been playing great, both in the local league and in the Copa Libertadores. Ricardo Ferreti's boys have four victories in their last five Liga MX games.

Atlas haven't lost since Matchday 12 and have won their last three.

But they are not the only teams that could secure the tournament's lead.

If they lose in the upcoming week and Guadalajara secures a win, then Chivas will take the top spot. The same thing goes for America.

The Topscorer

Julio Furch, Matias Alustiza and Dorlan Pabon lead the topscorers' table with nine goals each. Alustiza and Pabon netted a brace in Matchday 16.

But they are not alone. Rafael Sobis, Ismael Sosa and Aviles Hurtado trail by two and could very well tie them or even surpass them.

Perhaps Sobis is the one who has a better shot at it, as he has scored his seven goals in the past nine games.

The Relegated Team

It seems inevitable. Universidad de Guadalajara is the top candidate to return to the Ascenso MX.

Leones Negros have had two terrible tournaments and as a result are at the bottom of the relegation table.

They haven't won since Matchday 10, when they defeated Morelia 0-1.

The club put the final nail in their coffin last weekend when they lost 2-1 to Veracruz. That result puts them in a tough spot, as they have to grab three points in their visit to Estadio Azul this weekend and wait to see if Santos overpower Puebla.

If a miracle happens and the stars align, then La Franja will be the team that leaves the Liga MX.

The Teams That Advance to the Liguilla

There's quite a fight to grab a place among the top eight teams of the Clausura 2015.

So far, there are five available spots for the Liguilla, but 10 clubs are in the hunt, and everything will be defined in Matchday 17.

Guadalajara, America and Cruz Azul seem to have it easy; a win or a draw —and in some cases even a defeat— would guarantee them a place in the postseason.

Then we have Tijuana, Santos, Toluca, Queretaro and Monterrey who have to wait and see what other teams do in their respective games to aspire for the qualification. In the meantime, they must strive for perfection.

Pachuca and UNAM are basically out of the competition and need a lot of math—and luck—to make the Liguilla.
