A Wide Open Atlantic Division

Toronto Maple Leafs v Florida Panthers

A mere eight points separate the first place team (Toronto) and the fourth place team (Ottawa) in the Atlantic Division and the race got even tighter Tuesday with Florida's 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs.

A win would have earned Toronto home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a feat that will have to wait after Eetu Luostarinen, Gustav Forsling, and Carter Verhaeghe all found the net in Tuesday's win.

The victory moved the Panthers within two of the Tampa Bay Lightning for second place in the Atlantic. Toronto coach Craig Berube credited the defending Stanley Cup champions' desire for the win, saying after the game, "They wanted it more than us."

He continued, "It started in the face-off circle, and they are at 71 percent tonight. To me, it comes down to competitiveness and digging in. Seemed like they were a more desperate team.’’

They may also be the better team. The Panthers have taken three-of-four from Toronto this season and is not a team the Leafs want to see come playoff time.

Toronto, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Ottawa have already clinched the playoffs. Where they are seeded when postseason play begins could ultimately determine the level of success they enjoy (or do not) in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

Whatever the case is, for Toronto, they will have to find a determination and grit that has been missing from their previous postseason performances if they hope to take advantage of the position they currently find themselves in.
