MLB Power Rankings as Giants, Tigers Move into Top 5 and Orioles, Padres Stumble

BR MLB

Who's ready for a shakeup at the top of this week's MLB power rankings?

With the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and New York Yankees all suffering series losses last week, the door swung open for a pair of better-than-expected contenders in the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants to make their move.

Further down the rankings, the Tampa Bay Rays made a nice jump as well following series wins on the road against the Diamondbacks and Padres, while the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays were among the week's biggest fallers.

All of that to say, these rankings remain an extremely fluid process, especially this early in the season when sample sizes are still small enough for one week's worth of games to have a major impact on the MLB landscape.

If a team is winning, it will climb; if a team is losing, it will fall. It's as simple as that.

Nos. 30-28

Washington Nationals v Colorado Rockies
Jordan Beck

30. Colorado Rockies (4-23)

Previous Rank: 30
Last Week: 0-3 @ KC, 0-3 vs. CIN

Individual success will be the name of the game for the Rockies this season as they search for long-term building blocks amid what is already shaping up to be a lost season. Outfielder Jordan Beck went 7-for-18 with five home runs last season, staking his claim to the everyday left field job following an early demotion to Triple-A.

29. Chicago White Sox (7-21)

Previous Rank: 29
Last Week: 0-1 @ BOS, 1-2 @ MIN, 1-2 @ ATH

The youth movement is under way for the White Sox, and rookie Edgar Quero has been an early standout since taking over as the team's primary catcher. The former Angels prospect is hitting .344/.462/.406 with 11 hits and six walks in 11 games, and he has been slotted in the No. 4 and No. 5 spot in the batting order as a result of his early success.

28. Pittsburgh Pirates (11-18)

Previous Rank: 27
Last Week: 2-1 @ LAA, 1-2 @ LAD

Has there been a better offseason bargain than Andrew Heaney joining the Pirates on a one-year, $5.25 million deal? The left-hander has a 1.72 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and .165 opponents' batting average in 31.1 innings over his first five starts, helping to offset the loss of Jared Jones in the starting rotation.

Nos. 27-25

Miami Marlins v Seattle Mariners
Agustín Ramírez

27. Miami Marlins (12-15)

Previous Rank: 26
Last Week: 2-1 vs. CIN, 1-2 @ SEA

The Marlins roster is still very much a work-in-progress, and similar to some of the other teams at the bottom of these rankings, the 2025 season will be about identifying potential long-term building blocks. Catcher Agustín Ramírez and right-hander Max Meyer have been two early standouts, delivering on their top prospect pedigree.

26. Baltimore Orioles (10-17)

Previous Rank: 19
Last Week: 1-2 @ WAS, 0-3 @ DET

The Orioles' longest winning streak of the season stands at two games, and a starting rotation that ranks 28th in the majors with a 5.83 ERA is largely to blame for those early struggles. It's not often teams swing a major trade before summer starts, but they might need to seriously consider making a push to acquire another starter soon.

25. Los Angeles Angels (12-15)

Previous Rank: 16
Last Week: 1-2 vs. PIT, 0-3 @ MIN

Since going 9-5 to start the year while climbing as high as No. 9 in these power rankings, the Angels have crashed back to earth and again look like an also-ran in the AL West race. The offense has scored more than three runs just three times in their last 13 games, and they were shut out for the third time this season on Sunday while getting swept by the Twins.

Nos. 24-22

MLB: APR 16 Astros at Cardinals
Brendan Donovan

24. Minnesota Twins (12-16)

Previous Rank: 28
Last Week: 2-1 vs. CWS, 3-0 vs. LAA

After winning just two of their first seven series, the Twins finally managed to find some level of sustained success last week, albeit against two teams now ranked below them. The top four spots in the rotation and the back of the bullpen remain a clear strength if they can find enough consistent offensive production to back those arms.

23. Toronto Blue Jays (13-15)

Previous Rank: 13
Last Week: 0-3 @ HOU, 1-2 @ NYY

The Blue Jays snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over the Yankees on Friday, but then lost both ends of a double-header in the Bronx on Sunday, and that cold stretch sent them tumbling down the rankings. They rank 29th in the majors with just 15 home runs in 28 games, and newcomers Andrés Giménez and Anthony Santander are the team leaders with three long balls each.

22. St. Louis Cardinals (12-16)

Previous Rank: 25
Last Week: 1-2 @ ATH, 2-1 vs. MIL

The Cardinals made some noise against the rival Brewers over the weekend, but it has been a trying season thus far from the Redbirds. The St. Louis bullpen has tallied eight losses and seven blown saves while logging a 4.80 ERA that ranks 25th in the majors, and the offense outside of Lars Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan has been extremely inconsistent.

Nos. 21-19

Washington Nationals v Colorado Rockies
Dylan Crews

21. Atlanta Braves (12-15)

Previous Rank: 23
Last Week: 2-1 vs. STL, 2-1 @ ARI

After a rocky start to the season, the Braves are again trending in the right direction, logging three straight series wins and a 7-2 record in their last nine games. Utility man Eli White has played his way into a large role by hitting .273/.351/.545 with three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in 37 plate appearances, providing a nice boost to the outfield contingent.

20. Washington Nationals (13-15)

Previous Rank: 24
Last Week: 2-1 vs. BAL, 2-1 vs. NYM

The Nationals have quietly strung together three straight series wins against the Rockies, Orioles and Mets, and they have a 7-5 record on the year against teams with a winning record. After a slow start to the year, top prospect Dylan Crews is hitting .333/.360/.646 with 16 hits, four home runs and three steals over his last 13 games.

19. Athletics (14-14)

Previous Rank: 21
Last Week: 2-1 vs. TEX, 2-1 vs. CWS

With Tyler Soderstrom enjoying a breakout season and rookies Jacob Wilson and Nick Kurtz both showing promise, the Athletics have assembled an exciting young offensive core and rank among the MLB leaders in batting average (.252, eighth), OPS (.739, seventh) and home runs (38, sixth). They might not be ready to legitimately contend, but don't be surprised if they hover around the .500 mark for the bulk of the season.

Nos. 18-16

Texas Rangers v San Francisco Giants
Tyler Mahle

18. Kansas City Royals (14-15)

Previous Rank: 20
Last Week: 3-0 vs. COL, 2-1 vs. HOU

The Royals followed up a six-game losing streak with a six-game winning run that was finally halted with a loss to the Astros on Sunday, but they picked up back-to-back series wins along the way to get their season back on track. The offense ranks 29th in the majors with a .616 OPS and has averaged just 3.1 runs per game, so it's a small miracle they are just one game below the .500 mark.

17. Texas Rangers (15-13)

Previous Rank: 15
Last Week: 1-2 @ ATH, 1-2 @ SF

The Rangers have scored just 86 runs through 28 games, the lowest total in the majors. To put that into perspective, they tallied 128 runs through their first 28 games a year ago, though they actually won one less game with a 14-14 record. A starting rotation led by Tyler Mahle (6 GS, 1.14 ERA, 31.2 IP) and Nathan Eovaldi (6 GS, 2.21 ERA, 36.2 IP) has helped prop up the underperforming offense.

16. Milwaukee Brewers (14-15)

Previous Rank: 8
Last Week: 1-3 @ SF, 1-2 @ STL

The Brewers are now 5-11 on the road this season following last week's struggles against the Giants and Cardinals, and they will look to reverse that trend when they wrap up their current road trip with a three-game series against the White Sox. The bullpen has gone from one of the best in baseball a year ago (3.11 ERA, 2nd in MLB) to one of the worst this season (4.87 ERA, 26th in MLB).

Nos. 15-13

Cincinnati Reds v Baltimore Orioles
Noelvi Marte

15. Houston Astros (14-13)

Previous Rank: 17
Last Week: 3-0 vs. TOR, 1-2 @ KC

The Astros have two of the most dominant pitchers in baseball right now in Hunter Brown (6 GS, 4-1, 1.22 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 40 K, 37.0 IP) and Josh Hader (11 G, 7/7 SV, 0.69 ERA, 11.8 K/9), and they rank fourth in the majors with a 3.18 ERA as a team. The issue has been an offense that has scored three or fewer runs a staggering 18 times through 27 games, including back-to-back shutouts on Friday and Saturday.

14. Cincinnati Reds (15-13)

Previous Rank: 18
Last Week: 1-2 @ MIA, 3-0 @ COL

The Reds lost back-to-back games on the road to the Marlins following their 24-run explosion against the Orioles on April 20, but they followed that up with four straight wins to move above .500 and into second place in the NL Central standings. Third baseman Noelvi Marte is 15-for-32 with four doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI over his last seven games.

13. Cleveland Guardians (15-12)

Previous Rank: 14
Last Week: 2-1 vs. NYY, 1-2 vs. BOS

Despite the weekend series loss to the Red Sox, the Guardians are still 6-3 in their last nine games, and since their 3-6 start to the year they have not lost more than two consecutive games. With a 5.06 ERA (27th in MLB) and 1.50 WHIP (28th in MLB), the starting rotation has been among the worst in baseball, yet they are still finding ways to win.

Nos. 12-10

Atlanta Braves v Arizona Diamondbacks
Eugenio Suárez

12. Arizona Diamondbacks (15-13)

Previous Rank: 11
Last Week: 1-2 vs. TB, 1-2 vs. ATL

After a terrific 12-7 start to the year, the D-backs have fallen out of the top 10 following three straight series losses and a 3-6 record in their last nine games. Slugger Eugenio Suárez provided one of the highlights of the season thus far on Saturday with MLB's first four-homer game since J.D. Martinez in 2017, and just the fourth in the last 20 years.

11. Tampa Bay Rays (14-14)

Previous Rank: 22
Last Week: 2-1 @ ARI, 3-0 @ SD

The Rays were the biggest climber of the week after sweeping the Padres at Petco Park, holding last week's No. 2 team to just three runs over three games while beating Dylan Cease and Michael King. With breakout rookie Jake Mangum landing on the injured list with a groin strain, veteran Travis Jankowski was acquired from the White Sox for cash considerations.

10. Philadelphia Phillies (15-13)

Previous Rank: 4
Last Week: 0-3 @ NYM, 2-1 @ CHC

Another week, another ugly showing from a Phillies bullpen that ranks 29th in the majors with a 5.28 ERA and has seven blown saves in 15 chances. The club is reportedly already showing interest in Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, and something will need to be done to shore up the relief corps. The pieces are there for this team to contend for a title if it can address that glaring hole.

Nos. 9-7

Miami Marlins v Seattle Mariners
Logan Evans

9. Boston Red Sox (16-14)

Previous Rank: 12
Last Week: 1-0 vs. CWS, 1-2 vs. SEA, 2-1 @ CLE

The Red Sox seem to have nailed the offseason additions of Alex Bregman (132 PA, .319/.394/.543, 16 XBH, 5 HR, 22 RBI), Garrett Crochet (6 GS, 1.95 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 44 K, 37.0 IP) and Aroldis Chapman (12 G, 4/4 SV, 1.74 ERA, 13.9 K/9), though they are still just two games above .500 through their first 30 games. A week of games against the Blue Jays and Twins gives them a good opportunity to improve on that record.

8. San Diego Padres (17-11)

Previous Rank: 2
Last Week: 1-2 @ DET, 0-3 vs. TB

Since starting the season 15-4 and briefly climbing into the No. 1 spot in these rankings, the Padres have lost three straight series and gone 2-7 over their last nine games. The offense scored nine runs in six games last week, and they are stretched thin right now with Jackson Merrill, Luis Arraez, Jake Cronenworth and Jason Heyward all on the injured list.

7. Seattle Mariners (16-12)

Previous Rank: 10
Last Week: 2-1 @ BOS, 2-1 vs. MIA

The Mariners had a successful week in the win-loss column, but they were dealt a major blow when Logan Gilbert landed on the injured list with a flexor strain in his elbow. Prospect Logan Evans replaced him in the rotation and tossed five innings of two-hit, two-run ball in his MLB debut on Sunday. Catcher Cal Raleigh also launched his AL-leading 10th home run of the season on Sunday against the Marlins.

Nos. 6-4

New York Yankees v Cleveland Guardians
Ben Rice

6. New York Yankees (17-11)

Previous Rank: 3
Last Week: 1-2 @ CLE, 2-1 vs. TOR

The Yankees are 9-4 over their last four series and continue to find ways to win even with a banged-up starting rotation and a bullpen that is in flux due to the continued struggles of All-Star closer Devin Williams. Going forward, it sounds like Luke Weaver will be handling ninth-inning duties, at least for now. Offensively, Ben Rice and Trent Grisham have provided a huge boost alongside another MVP-caliber start from Aaron Judge.

5. Chicago Cubs (17-12)

Previous Rank: 5
Last Week: 2-0 vs. LAD, 1-2 vs. PHI

The Cubs made a statement with back-to-back wins against the Dodgers at Wrigley Field to begin last week, but they dropped two of three to the Phillies over the weekend, including an extra-inning loss on Sunday. Their last 20 games have all been against teams with a winning record, and they have gone 12-8 overall during that grueling stretch.

4. New York Mets (19-9)

Previous Rank: 6
Last Week: 3-0 vs. PHI, 1-2 @ WAS

The Mets left little question who the current top dog in the NL East is with a three-game sweep of the Phillies last week, but they stopped short of making a serious push for the No. 1 spot in these rankings with a series loss to the Nationals over the weekend. The starting rotation leads the majors with a 2.36 ERA, well ahead of the Tigers (2.89) and Rangers (3.15) on that leaderboard.

Nos. 3-1

Baltimore Orioles v Detroit Tigers

3. Los Angeles Dodgers (18-10)

Previous Rank: 1
Last Week: 0-2 @ CHC, 2-1 vs. PIT

After losing both games of a quick two-game series with the Cubs and then getting shut out on Friday by Paul Skenes (6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 9 K) and a trio of relievers, the Dodgers managed to salvage their week with back-to-back wins against the Pirates on Saturday and Sunday. Tyler Glasnow was removed from Sunday's start after just one inning with shoulder soreness, and he could be headed for the injured list.

2. Detroit Tigers (18-10)

Previous Rank: 9
Last Week: 2-1 vs. SD, 3-0 vs. BAL

The Tigers entered play on Monday tied with the Yankees for the best run differential in baseball (+42), and a rock-solid starting rotation has been the foundation of their success with a 2.89 ERA from the starting staff to lead the American League. Offensively, they are by no means a juggernaut, but they continue to get contributions from up and down the lineup, with Spencer Torkelson putting together a resurgent season in the middle of the order.

1. San Francisco Giants (19-10)

Previous Rank: 7
Last Week: 3-1 vs. MIL, 2-1 vs. TEX

The Giants have a half-game lead in the NL West standings following a 5-2 week, and they are 15-7 on the year against teams with a winning record, so they have earned their spot atop baseball's toughest division. Outfielder Jung Hoo Lee (120 PA, .324/.383/.546, 16 XBH) has been a revelation following an injury-plagued stateside debut in 2024.

Stars of the Week

Houston Astros v St. Louis Cardinals
Hunter Brown

Hitter of the Week: Andy Pages, Los Angeles Dodgers

Stats: 13-for-20, 3 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 5 R, 1 SB

After hitting just .159/.274/.270 with 22 strikeouts over his first 73 plate appearances, Pages caught fire at the plate last week to give the bottom of the Dodgers lineup a nice boost. Still only 24 years old, he has the offensive upside to develop into an impact player.

Pitcher of the Week: Hunter Brown, Houston Astros

Stats: 2 GS, 2-0, 0.69 ERA, 9 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 18 K, 13.0 IP

Brown has rattled off six straight quality starts to begin the 2025 season, and he has allowed just one earned run in 25 innings over his last four outings. The 26-year-old took a significant step forward last season, and now he is looking more and more like a legitimate Cy Young candidate. With Framber Valdez facing free agency next offseason, he could step into the role of staff ace.

Rookie of the Week: Agustín Ramírez, Miami Marlins

Stats: 9-for-19, 4 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R

Ramírez was one of the breakout prospects of the 2024 season with a loud start to the year in the Yankees farm system, and he was flipped to the Marlins as the prospect centerpiece in the Jazz Chisholm Jr. deal at the deadline. The 23-year-old is still developing defensively, but he can rake, and he might already be the best offensive player on the Miami roster.
