Complete Roster Breakdown of the 2017-18 Las Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights officially have a complete roster. Team owner Bill Foley and general manager George McPhee announced their expansion draft selections during the 2017 NHL Awards in Las Vegas Wednesday. It includes such notables as goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (above) and right wing James Neal.

In the coming weeks, we should have a clearer picture of what the Golden Knights roster will look like when the curtain rises in October on their inaugural season. Some of the 30 players selected in the draft could be dealt to other clubs. Perhaps others will be acquired through trades or free agency.

For now, here's a breakdown of the Golden Knights roster based on the selections made in the expansion draft. Feel free to voice your views on this topic in the comments section below.

4th-Line Forwards

A need for size and grit could make Chris Thorburn, William Carrier and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare likely candidates to stock the Golden Knights' fourth line.

At 6'3" and 235 pounds, Thorburn is a big, physical checking line right wing. The 34-year-old is an experienced penalty-killer and doesn't shy away from the rough stuff.

The 22-year-old Carrier made his NHL debut this season with the Buffalo Sabres. At 6'2" and 212 pounds, he has power forward potential. This young left wing could move up the depth chart over the course of 2017-18.

Bellemare, 32, also has decent size (6'0", 198 lbs) and is an effective veteran penalty-killer. He led all Flyers forwards in blocked shots (70) and short-handed time on ice per game (two minutes and 46 seconds) last season. He can play center or left wing.

3rd-Line Forwards

Forwards Reilly Smith, Erik Haula and William Karlsson could be skating on the Golden Knights' third line for their inaugural season.

Smith, 26, has two-way abilities and decent offensive skills. Though he managed only 37 points last season with the Florida Panthers, the right winger reached the 50-point plateau in 2013-14 and 2015-16.

A speedy and versatile forward, Haula's faceoff percentage (53.9) could make him the favorite to center this line. The 26-year-old could become their penalty-killing specialist.

The 24-year-old Karlsson has played two full NHL seasons. He possesses good playmaking skills and can play center or wing. He could be slotted into the left-wing position on this line.

2nd-Line Forwards

Three centers who can also skate on the wings could make up the Golden Knights' second forward line.

Jonathan Marchessault enjoyed a career performance in 2016-17 with the Florida Panthers. A center who also played at right wing, the 26-year-old led the Panthers in goals (30) and finished third in scoring with 51 points.

Injuries limited Cody Eakin to just 12 points in 60 games last season with the Dallas Stars. In each of his previous three seasons, however, the 26-year-old netted 35 or more points. A hard-working two-way forward, Eakin could become the Knights' second line left wing.

Oscar Lindberg is coming off two straight seasons with 20 or more points with the New York Rangers, where he was largely used in a depth role. However, the 25-year-old could have a chance to shine with the Golden Knights on their second line at center or left wing.

1st-Line Forwards

The Golden Knights' top forward line could consist of right wing James Neal, left wing David Perron and center Vadim Shipachyov

Neal, 29, is a reliable scoring winger. He's reached or exceeded 20 goals in each of his nine NHL seasons. A physical winger, he uses his 6'2", 221-pound frame to his advantage along the boards and in front of the net.

Perron could be a complementary linemate for Neal. The 29-year-old is a creative playmaking winger who netted 46 points last season with the St. Louis Blues. Consistency tends to be an issue for Perron. He was also plagued by concussions earlier in his career.

On May 5, the Knights signed Shipachyov to a two-year contract. Having spent his pro career in Russia, the 30-year-old has strong playmaking skills and a solid two-way style.

Other Golden Knights forwards of note include Mikhail Grabovski and David Clarkson. Both, however, face uncertain futures. Injuries forced them to miss all of last season, and it remains to be seen if they'll ever suit up again in the NHL.

3rd Defense Pairing

The Golden Knights acquired Shea Theodore in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks. The 21-year-old has considerable potential as a puck-moving defenseman and could blossom one day into a first-pairing blueliner. The Knights could start him on their third pairing, but it won't be surprising if he moves up their blue-line depth chart next season.

Deryk Engelland began his pro career in Las Vegas with the East Coast Hockey League. The 35-year-old also maintains his offseason home there and reportedly signed a one-year deal with Vegas. A hard-nosed defensive-minded blueliner, the 6'2", 214-pound Engelland could be skating on the third pairing's right side.

2nd Defense Pairing

Alexei Emelin's physical style should make him a good fit on the left side of the Golden Knights' second defense pairing. The 6'2", 218-pounder is a rugged stay-at-home defender who plays a punishing game. His 241 hits last season ranked among the league's top 10.

Nate Schmidt could be ready for second-pairing duty. The former Washington Capital possesses good speed and puck-moving skills. The 25-year-old did an admirable in this year's playoffs filling in for the sidelined Karl Alzner.

1st Defense Pairing

Marc Methot seems the obvious choice to skate on the left side of the Golden Knights' first defense pairing. The 32-year-old filled that role for several seasons with the Ottawa Senators alongside superstar Erik Karlsson. He won't have a linemate of Karlsson's caliber with the Knights, but he is a reliable, stay-at-home defender with leadership abilities and who can log big minutes.

The Golden Knights lack a true first-line puck-carrying defenseman, but they could try Jason Garrison in that role on the right side. Though the 32-year-old was held to only nine points in 70 games this season, he has three 30-plus-point seasons on his resume. His big shot could be useful on the power play.

Other notable defensemen selected by the Knights include Luca Sbisa, Brayden McNabb, Jon Merrill, Colin Miller and Clayton Stoner. Some of them could be dealt away later this summer or be demoted to the minors for next season.

Goaltenders

The Golden Knights have a surefire starting goaltender in Marc-Andre Fleury. In 13 NHL seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 32-year-old was a member of three Stanley Cup championship teams. With 375 career victories, Fleury should provide this expansion team with invaluable veteran experience.

Fleury will be ably supported by backup Calvin Pickard. The 25-year-old spent three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche as Semyon Varlamov's understudy. He also backstopped Canada to a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships. Pickard has the potential to one day become Fleury's successor as the Knights starter.

The Golden Knights also selected Jean-Francois Berube from the New York Islanders. The 25-year-old spent parts of the last two seasons with the Isles as their third-string netminder and could be stuck in that role with his new club. It's also possible he could become a trade candidate.
