Premier League Season Preview: Tottenham Hotspur

Jul 28, 2010

With the Premier League season now rapidly approaching, I have decided to take a look at each of the 20 sides that will be playing at the top level of English football during this upcoming season.

To start off my countdown, I have decided to actually go in reverse order with Wolverhampton starting off the list, and Arsenal concluding this list right before the start of the Premier League season.

In the fifth part of this series, I will look at Tottenham Hotspur, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season, clinching a Champions League qualifying birth for Spurs.

Review of Last Year:

Last year, Spurs had a year to remember as they were able to finish fourth in the Premier League to clinch a spot in the qualifying round of the Champions League.

Throughout the season, Spurs were able to continue to score tons of goals and beat the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City (the latter being the win that got Spurs into the Champions League).

Overall, Tottenham really took some fantastic steps forward last year, and are a true contender in the Premier League to win the title in the future.

Major Questions Going into this season:
1. How will the Champions League affect Tottenham?
For most likely the first several months of the year, Tottenham will be playing in the UEFA Champions League (or the Europa League should they fail to qualify).
And of course, Spurs will have a heavy focus on success in the Champions League, and it could cause them to have their season get off to a negative start.
2. Will Spurs remain in the top four?
Spurs will have a tough challenge not only with the Champions League this year, but also with Manchester City and their millions.
City are widely expected to qualify for the Champions League this season, and Tottenham looks like the final roadblock preventing City from making the Champions League.
3. Will Spurs get anyone in the transfer market?
This summer, Spurs have tried to acquire the talent of West Ham midfielder Scott Parker to no avail.
Spurs should try to get someone now in this transfer window for next season, but does Harry Redknapp want any new blood?
4. Will Jermaine Defoe have another great year at White Hart Lane?
Last year, Jermaine Defoe had a fantastic season for Tottenham and was a major reason why they were able to finish in the top four.
Defoe will need another great season, but it is unlikely he will be as great this year after his body needs time to re-cooperate after England's appearance in the World Cup.
