Gunner Kiel to Indiana: 3 Reasons No. 1 Quarterback Is Making a Huge Mistake

At first I thought Gunner Kiel was a Notre Dame lock, but that was proven quickly to be false. Then we all got word it was basically down to Oklahoma, Alabama and Michigan. Shortly thereafter I started hearing Indiana was lurking around, but naturally I assumed it was a long shot.

Much debate ensued as to where Kiel was leaning, but Indiana just crept around. Now and today, Kiel has announced he is headed to play QB for the Hoosiers and he's stunned just about everyone.

I think it's an interesting choice that has a huge amount of upside, but just to play devil's advocate here, I'm going to give three reasons why it could be a mistake.

3. Limited Focus and Spotlight

In this day and age, where many top level recruits are looking to get to the NFL, you see many of them wanting to go to big name schools to really get looks by NFL scouts.

While scouts—and I personally know this for a fact—go to any and all schools in search of talent, Indiana is not a prime stop for them.

Also, Indiana doesn't get many games on TV and doesn't get much attention. Could Kiel be going to a place that will force the public to nearly forget about him?

2. Won't Play with Elite Talent

I'm sure Kevin Wilson and his staff are recruiting very hard on the trail and will develop a great offense for Indiana. But for Kiel, I just don't see many great WR prospects or OL's signing up to be a Hoosier.

No offense to Indiana, but they're not a powerhouse at all on the gridiron and Kiel may be their best player when he gets to campus as a true freshman.

I know Kiel is a great QB and can raise the level of play of others around him, but he won't have too much to work with at Indiana.

1. Very Slim Chance of Winning a Championship

Isn't this supposed to be what it's about at the end of the day? Winning. Kiel may win a few games as the leader of the Hoosier football squad, but I have my doubts about Indy winning a Big Ten title and I say basically no chance they win the national title.

If he'd gone to Oklahoma, Alabama or maybe even Michigan, he'd have a dramatically increased chance of competing for and winning a title.

The Hoosiers aren't likely going to do neither any time soon.
