Football Transfer Deadline Rumors: 5 Young Players Who Should Join a Bigger Club
It's Wednesday, August 31 deadline day. Like usual, many clubs both big and small have procrastinated all summer on finding new additions to their teams.
But it's now or never.
As the top leagues (bar the Italian Serie A) have already begun, managers have been able to view their teams play competitively. And there are a bunch of teams that will want to use the final days of the transfer window wisely.
There are always huge transfers that occur on deadline day, but this article will simply discuss young, lesser-known players who should make a move today.
Here's a list of five players who should be bought by Europe's elite.
Yann M'Vila
Age: 21
Position: Defensive Midfield
Current Team: Rennes
M'Vila has long been linked to a move away from Rennes, and it really looked as if a deal would finally be completed this summer. The French midfielder has mainly been targeted by Arsenal, and it looks like Wenger is trying hard to sign M'Vila after the Gunners' 8-2 defeat at Manchester United three days ago.
M'Vila would certainly love the opportunity of playing in England, and it would be smart for one of England's elite to sign the midfielder.
Potential/Rumored Destination: Arsenal
Marko Marin
Age: 22
Position: Winger
Current Team: Werder Bremen
Marko Marin hasn't gotten as much attention as the likes of Mario Gotze and Mesut Ozil, even though the 22-year-old has been great with Bremen in the past years. It's surprising that no clubs have shown any significant interest in the winger.
Still, it would be wise for Europe's top clubs to snatch Marin right now for what should be less than $15 million. At this time next year, he may be worth four times that.
Potential/Rumored Destination: No Evident Destinations
Antoine Griezmann
Age: 20
Position: Winger
Current Team: Real Sociedad
Griezmann may not be a household name at the moment, most likely because he plays for Real Sociedad. The 20-year-old has had lots of success with the Spanish club, as well as at the youth level for the France national team.
He has been weakly linked to Manchester United, Lyon and others at times, but his performances at the U-20 World Cup this summer must have made teams truly consider buying the winger. It would certainly pay off to buy the Frenchman before the transfer deadline is reached.
Potential/Rumored Destination: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal
Marco Reus
Age: 22
Position: Attacking Midfield
Current Team: Borussia Monchengladbach
Marco Reus is probably the least-known player on this list, with the German midfielder plying his trade with Borussia Monchengladbach. Reus almost became a second-tier player as his team stayed in the Bundesliga through the relegation-playoff, in which they beat VfL Bochum (Reus scored the winning aggregate goal).
The 22-year-old was probably considering moving away from Monchengladbach after their poor season, though no interest was shown by too many bigger club. However, Borussia have begun the 2011-12 campaign very well, with seven points after four games.
Reus has started the season brightly, with two goals and two assists so far. Of course, it may be too early for big clubs to bid for Reus, as the German hasn't had an amazing career so far. But he has shown that he has potential, and I feel that one of Europe's top teams should take a chance on Reus.
Potential/Rumored Destination: Chelsea, Inter Milan
Douglas Costa
Age: 20
Position: Attacking Midfield
Current Team: Shakhtar Donetsk
Costa was strongly linked to Manchester United in 2009, but ended up going to Shakhtar Donetsk from Gremio. The Brazilian took time to adjust to his new club, but when he finally did, he was superb.
Like so many young players around the world, Costa has been linked to Arsenal. With Arsene Wenger under ridiculous amounts of pressure, this deal may actually take place today. The 20-year-old Brazilian could help bring creativity back to the Emirates, after the departures of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas.
Arsenal may face competition for the midfielder as Chelsea and Manchester United apparently want Costa too.
Potential/Rumored Destination: Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea
