Why Antonio Conte Deserves to Be Banned
Why Antonio Conte Deserves to Be Banned
Juventus coach Antonio Conte is facing at a 10-month ban for failing to report match-fixing last season.
According to ESPN Soccernet, Conte was involved in match-fixing on two different occasions in the 2010-2011 season, while still coaching for Siena.
Siena was just one of 23 teams involved in the giant match-fixing scandal. Some of the other teams included in the scandal were Atalanta and Novara, said the Associated Press (h/t TSN).
The investigation began back in May, and the fate of Conte is still undetermined.
Juventus Players Also Facing Accusations
Conte had failed to report his knowledge of match-fixing when Siena played Novara and Albinoleffe last season.
Stefano Carrobio, who played with Siena under Conte, claimed that Conte had prior knowledge to the outcomes of those matches.
Juventus players Leonard Bonucci and Simone Pepe had also been facing accusations, but their involvement has been cleared.
Other Key Suspects in Match-Fixing Scandal
According to the AP (h/t ESPN), Siena goalkeeping coach Marco Savaroni and fitness coach Giorgio D'Urbano are facing suspensions as well.
The two coaches are only looking at a 23-week suspension—not quite as hefty as that of Antonio Conte.
The head coach of Napoli has been questioned, and players from Atalanta and Bologna could possibly be facing suspension too.
3-Month Plea Bargain Denied
The severity of the charges brought upon Conte have not been overlooked by the court, seeing as how they recently rejected a plea bargain for a three-month suspension.
Authorities are still unclear as to whether or not Conte has been involved in more match-fixing scandals while coaching at Juventus.
