Boise State Football: 2 Weakest Positions to Worry About

Boise State seems to have had a very productive spring camp. The spring game itself was enough to give Broncos fans a heavy dose of encouragement going into the fall.

However, there were some notable question marks.

Many of the unknowns going into the season have to with depth more than anything. While head coach Chris Petersen does seem to have some good starters up and down the roster, quality backups, or lack thereof, might be an issue down the stretch.

Let's look at two positions specifically on the Broncos' 2013 roster that could be a bit thin going into the season.

Another season, another kicking question. Who will be the Broncos field-goal kicker in 2013?

Right now the job is between JUCO transfer Tyler Rausa and redshirt junior Dan Goodale. Goodale actually looked a bit better than Rausa at the spring game, but the fall could be a whole different story.

The Broncos went out and got a junior college guy, and it would seem that he would have the advantage. However, it doesn't look like he has done enough to separate himself as the leader.

The big question is what if neither one of them work out? Is it all or nothing? Could punter Sean Wale step up?

Most Boise State fans are probably hoping those questions don't have to be asked.

The Broncos certainly needs consistency in the kicking game, but distance would be nice as well. Last season, Michael Frisina did a great job inside of 30 yards or so. However, outside of that, it was a bit shaky and those attempts became rare.

That needs to get better this season, and right now neither Goodale nor Rausa seem to be the clear choice.

Boise State is young and inexperienced at cornerback. Those playing in the spring game showed serious promise, but it is still a huge question mark for Petersen and his staff going into the fall.

The Broncos have a few guys on the roster who have game-time experience. However, one of them, Bryan Douglas, is coming back from a torn ACL late in the 2012 season.

Donte Deayon played in just five games in 2012 as a true freshman, and Deon'tae Florence made an appearance in seven games last season.

Some assistance in the form of JUCO transfers should help the team overall, but they are still an unknown at this point. Cleshawn Page was in camp this spring, and he did look good in the spring game. However, Mercy Maston won't arrive until this fall.

Redshirt freshman Chaz Anderson looked good in the spring game as well. There will be few more freshman joining the team this fall, but there is no way to know if any of them will pan out right away.

As it stands now, the Broncos have three guys with minimal experience as Broncos, a couple of guys who have played at the collegiate level and some true freshman unknowns at cornerback.

When it's laid out that way, it doesn't sound all that encouraging for Boise State fans. However, the way Anderson, Deayon, Florence and Page looked this spring, there is plenty for those same fans to be excited about. 

Cornerback will be very interesting for Boise State going into the 2013 season.

When looking down the roster of the 2013 Boise State Broncos, it seems to be a talented team.

Quarterback is settled with Joe Southwick the clear starter and Grant Hedrick as his capable backup. Running back seems to be in great shape as well. The offensive line looks to be good once again, and the tight ends and wide receivers have a number of very talented athletes looking to shine this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the line looks to be in great shape with some newcomers making waves this spring and seemingly filling in a couple of gaps and some depth. Also, linebacker looks to be in great hands with Blake Renaud, Tyler Gray and others.

At safety, Jeremy Ioane, Dillon Lukehart, Taylor Loffler, Darian Thompson and Ebo Makinde are all capable of stepping up, and the Broncos should be fine in this area.

Special teams, excluding field goals, seems to be in good shape, and overall, the Broncos look like a complete team with quality backups at most positions.

If Petersen can get his corners and kickers ready in time for the season, Boise State is going to be very hard to stop.
