Fiorentina Summer Transfers: 5 Potential Arrivals to Make Them Stronger
Fiorentina fell painfully close in their pursuit of a Champions League place with Milan denying them with just minutes before the end of the season.
The Viola overachieved to an extent and Vincenzo Montella did a marvellous job in his first season in charge after the Florentine club struggled to avoid relegation just over a year ago.
The potential of the club is huge though and even the sale of their best player, Stevan Jovetic, will not hold them back from competing for a Champions League place again next season.
Money will be made available by co-owner Andrea Della Valle, who demonstrates such passion watching his club each week from the stands.
Here are five players that will help strengthen the squad and give them a better chance of improving on last season.
Gustavo Munua
Goalkeeper Gustavo Munua has already been signed from Spanish side Levante.
The Uruguayan joins the Viola on a free transfer (per Football Italia) after his time with the Granotes ended on a sour note.
By refusing to sign a new contract, Juan Ignacio Martínez decided to play backup goalkeeper Keylor Navas for the final seven games.
Beforehand though, the former Malaga player was a key player for La Liga's surprise package and should give Fiorentina some quality and experience between the sticks.
Neto and Emiliano Viviano rotated throughout the season and neither managed to provide Montella with any great deal of confidence to command the defence.
On a free transfer, Munua should be something of a bargain if he has the backing from the manager from the beginning of the season and is allowed to settle into the side.
Mario Gomez
Mario Gomez has been linked to the Viola and when a player of his calibre is seriously considering Fiorentina, it shows how far the club has come in the last year.
The German international struggled for starts last season for Bayern, with Mario Mandzukic the preferred choice of Jupp Heynckes.
His quality is undeniable though and the 27-year-old could offer a great upgrade to the attack.
The player's agent told German newspaper Bild (via Football Italia) that Fiorentina have registered an interest in the player.
Massimo Ambrosini
Massimo Ambrosini has left Milan after 18 years with the Rossoneri.
The 38-year-old still has great quality though and proved it with a man of the match display against Barcelona in Milan's first leg victory in last season's Champions League.
Montella had a wealth of creative talent in the midfield last season, but none of David Pizarro, Borja Valero or Alberto Aquilani were really capable of providing that disruptive influence that Ambrosini could offer.
Available on a free transfer and with the player's agent having already held discussions with the club (per Football Italia), Ambrosini would be a brilliant signing.
Mauricio Pinilla
Mauricio Pinilla is reportedly a target for Fiorentina, according to Chilean newspaper La Tercera (via Forza Italian Football).
The Cagliari striker would offer more of a presence up top for the Viola and with Luca Toni set to depart, the Chilean could be a smart signing.
Pinilla struggled with injuries and suspensions last season, but after joining the Isolani in January 2012, the player scored eight times in just 14 matches.
Montella will be hoping that Pinilla could replicate that form for Fiorentina if he is to sign.
Cyril Thereau
Chievo's Cyril Thereau is a fascinating player who fits right into the style that Fiorentina displayed last season.
Technically sound and with a wonderful eye for the pass, the Frenchman is highly underrated and carried the Flying Donkeys last season, thus ensuring they avoided relegation.
The 30-year-old chipped in with a useful number of goals too, scoring 11 goals in 37 games in a side that often fielded five defenders and three defensively-minded midfielders.
Fiorentina will face stiff competition from Milan though (per Football Italia) and with the player available on a free, he is sure to be a real bargain this summer.
