Boise State Football: Week 2 Fall Practice Stock Report

Boise State is closing out another week of fall practice, and so far, things look to be progressing well.

There have only been a few minor issues and a couple of injuries to report. Head coach Chris Petersen and his staff are most likely happy with the camp, overall.

The one issue that might have coach Petersen and his crew a bit nervous is depth—especially on the defensive line.

Of course, that is the same thing that was said at this time last year.

Let's take a look at the Week 2 fall practice stock report and discover which players are raising their game and which players need to step it up.

In 2012, Jack Fields came to Boise with some pretty high expectations. While he did play as a true freshman, his results were something he probably wasn't happy with.

Last season, Fields played in nine games, according to BroncoSports.com. He carried the ball 43 times for 135 yards.

This season, however, it appears as if Fields is poised to do much better things.

The Broncos have to feel good about the running backs they have on the roster. When a talent like Fields is likely third on a depth chart, it means Boise State is loaded in the backfield.

Head coach Chris Petersen is not happy with his teams' conditioning—especially the defense. He made that known in his comments to the press after the Broncos' private scrimmage Monday.

Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman quoted coach Pete in an online article. The frustrated coach said:

Not sure if one side was doing well, not sure if one side is doing bad. I was probably more impressed with our offensive conditioning than our defensive conditioning. It’s harder to play defense, in terms of conditioning, you’ve got to be in tip-top shape to run sideline to sideline for as much as we want those guys to go. We’ve got a little work to do there.

The defense couldn't have been happy about those comments.

A true freshman linebacker caused head coach Chris Petersen to take notice. However, it wasn't the true freshman many might have expected.

True freshman Joe Martarano, a local Idaho prospect, has some pretty high expectations from fans in Boise.

But, the true freshman coach Pete complimented was Tanner Vallejo, via David Bashore of MagicValley.com.

Expect good things from Vallejo this season. If he continues to perform at a high level, he may have a chance of finding the field in 2013.

Another true freshman makes this list. However, his stock is a bit down rather than up.

Quarterback Ryan Finley should be a good signal-caller for Boise State one day. However, for now, he is dealing with a minor injury.

Finley was throwing in practice by week's end, so it looks to be only a small setback in his development at Boise State.

With a redshirt in his future, he has plenty of time to heal up completely and learn the system.

Dan Goodale looks to have the inside track right now at the opportunity to kick field goals for the Broncos in 2013.

Boise State brought in JUCO transfer Tyler Rausa this season, but Goodale is the one impressing the most.

Coach Petersen actually named Goodale "camper of the day." Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman posted an article in which Petersen says some very good things about Goodale.

"He has worked his tail off since last season, throughout the spring and summer, and it is very noticeable right now," Petersen said.

Look for the competition to continue through fall camp, but as of right now, it looks like Goodale is the guy for the job.

Trevor Harman is a senior punter for the Broncos. He was the starter last season and was also the kickoff guy.

You would expect a senior to keep his starting job, but in the case of Harman, he is getting all the competition he can handle from redshirt freshman Sean Wale.

Coach Petersen loves competition for a reason. It usually brings the best out in his players, and Harman will probably be no exception.

As a senior, expect Harman to work harder than ever to make sure he can be the guy punting the ball for the Broncos in 2013.

Junior defensive lineman Tyler Horn is having a good camp. So much so that coach Petersen named him the "camper of the day."

Horn is versatile and consistent. Those are two qualities any coach loves.

BJ Rains of the Idaho Press-Tribune quoted Petersen and his comments about Horn.  

"Tyler has been working extremely hard and is playing multiple positions for us. He has been very steady, day in and day out," Petersen said.

Redshirt freshman safety Chanceller James will miss the entire 2013 season with an ACL injury.

James could have brought some depth to a defensive secondary that can use it. It has to be frustrating for James who was poised to contribute.
