Boise State Football: Complete Pro Day Results and Analysis

This week brought 16 NFL and even one CFL scout to Boise, Idaho for Boise State's pro day. It wasn't quite the showcase the 2012 display was, but it was still full of impressive performances.

Among the group looking to shine were running back D.J. Harper, cornerbacks Jerrell Gavins and Jamar Taylor, linebackers J.C. Percy, Tommy Smith and Dextrell Simmons, offensive lineman Brenel Myers, defensive linemen Darren Koontz and Mike Atkinson and fullback Dan Paul.

Did any of these guy hurt or help their chances at landing a spot on an NFL roster?

Let's take a look and find out whose stock went up and whose might have fallen.

Mike Atkinson

What's better than bacon?

Michael Atkinson, aka "Canadian Bacon" or just plain "Bacon", to some, showed up to pro day. Which is quite shocking considering he went out with an ACL injury versus San Diego State back in November of last season.

Atkinson didn't run the 40, but not because he didn't want to. Apparently he was told it wasn't needed.

He did however put up 32 reps in the bench. That would have put him in the top five at the NFL combine had he been invited.

The injury may give teams pause to take a chance on Atkinson. Still, he might get a free-agent deal or even go home and play in Canada.

Stock: Unchanged

Dan Paul

Dan Paul, the man with two first names, turned a few heads at pro day.

First, Paul ran 4.76 in the 40-yard dash, and for a fullback, that isn't bad at all. He also did 30 reps on the bench and completed a broach jump of 9'8".

However, the most impressive thing Paul did was post a 37.5-inch vertical. For a guy who is 6'1", 262 lbs, that is an impressive number. His bench press numbers would have been top five in the NFL combine.

Paul should get a look as a free agent at least.

Stock: Rising

Jerrell Gavins

Jerrell Gavins came up a little short at pro day.

Listed at 5'9", 169 lbs., Gavins didn't live up to his billing. According to Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman, Gavins measured just 5'7" at the pro day, and that probably doesn't help his chances to land an NFL roster spot.

Still, Gavins does stand tall when it comes to skill level. However, scouts were not able to see much of that because he injured a hamstring recently and didn't run a 40 or shuttle.

He does plan to attend a regional combine soon where he should be able to run, according to Cripe.

Stock: Falling

Jamar Taylor

Jamar Taylor is a solid NFL draft pick. The only question is really how high he will go.

Taylor didn't do a lot at the pro day, and for good reason. He did plenty at the NFL combine and really doesn't have much to prove.

Still, it was impressive when the one event he did decide to participate in turned out so well. In the 60-yard shuttle Taylor ran a 10.91. That would have been the best at the combine.

Jamar Taylor could find himself as the latest Boise State player to be drafted in the first round. If he doesn't go in the first, he will most certainly go in the second round.

Stock: Continues to rise

Tommy Smith and J.C. Percy

Linebackers J.C. Percy and Tommy Smith are probably long shots for the draft, but either one or both could land free-agent deals.

Percy is a player that plays with pure heart. At pro day he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.72 seconds, but pro days can't really do someone like Percy justice.

He is the kind of player that would no doubt play as hard, if not harder, than anyone on a roster.

Smith also worked out as fullback. He has played some fullback at Boise State and is no doubt looking to display his versatility. It worked for former Bronco Korey Hall, so it may work for Smith.

Stock for Percy: Unchanged

Stock for Smith: Slightly up (versatility)

D.J. Harper

No player probably did more to help his cause than D.J. Harper.

Harper had a decent NFL combine, but pro day at Boise State certainly helped to raise his stock. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds—that would have put him in third place at the combine.

Harper also improved his 20-yard shuttle from 4.35 at the combine to 4.13 at pro day and his 60-yard shuttle improved from 11.85 to 11.38.

Harper has already proved he is a competitor and has a lot of heart.

He came back from two season-ending knee injuries in his past, and although that fact could hurt his draft prospects, it seems scouts are getting more comfortable with Harper's future as an NFL running back.

Look for Harper to get a shot in the late rounds.

Stock: Up and rising
