5 Eredivisie Stars Set to Move Before the End of the Transfer Window

Against all expectations, the Netherlands performed well during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, despite having a squad that largely consisted of relatively inexperienced players.

Sure, they had Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie up front. However, at the back, former Feyenoord players like Stefan de Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi were constitutive. 

Those two players have moved on now, to Lazio and FC Porto respectively, but it appears there is interest in some of the other Dutch Eredivisie stars as well. What's more, there seems to be some interest in a few non-Dutch Eredivisie players as well.

Here, we take a look at five players who might move on from the Eredivisie this summer.

Ahead of the World Cup, it seemed like Jordy Clasie could become an important player in manager Louis van Gaal's setup. 

For some reason, the Dutch boss decided against it. Instead, he opted for midfielders Nigel de Jong, Georginio Wijnaldum and Jonathan de Guzman. 

Clasie eventually got his chance against Argentina in the semi-final, and the Feyenoord man impressed. Consequently, rumours regarding a move to a bigger club arose.

As per the Mirror, a potential destination for Clasie is Southampton, where the midfielder's former Feyenoord manager, Ronald Koeman, is currently active. 

Shortly before the World Cup started, Van Gaal switched from his traditional 4-3-3 formation to a new 5-3-2 setup. 

This new system depended on wing-backs for width and allowed left-back Daley Blind to demonstrate his class in Brazil. 

Versatile as he is, Blind also impressed as a centre-back and as a defensive midfielder. As an added bonus, he also scored a goal during the third-place playoff match against Brazil.  

Last year, Blind became Eredivisie Player of the Year at title-winning Ajax. Next year, he might just be looking for a move to a club in a bigger league. 

One of the Netherlands' biggest surprises this World Cup was 20-year-old left-winger and striker Memphis Depay.

Where Robben and Van Persie were the main men up top, Depay functioned as a super sub. Whenever Oranje were chasing a goal and Van Gaal wanted to switch from 5-3-2 to 4-3-3, he would bring on Depay.

Against Australia in the group stage, Depay scored the winning goal. In the next match, against Chile, he scored again. 

After his superb performances, he was on the three-man shortlist for FIFA's Best Young Player award. 

Now, the Daily Star is linking Depay with a potential move to Manchester United, where former Netherlands boss Van Gaal has taken charge.

Under Frank de Boer's management, Ajax have won the Eredivisie title four times in a row.

While he had some bad luck with injuries and he didn't always play, Icelandic striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson had a major role in Ajax's success. 

In January, it was reported by Gerrit van Leeuwen of Sky Sports that Sigthorsson had rejected a move to Queens Park Rangers.

This summer, the London-based club seem to be making another attempt, per the Mirror. 

Even though PSV Eindhoven promoted many of their youngsters—including the aforementioned Memphis Depay—to their first team last season, supposed wonder kid Zakaria Bakkali never quite made it into manager Phillip Cocu's starting XI.

To make matters worse, the Belgian attacker has refused to extend his contract. He has consequently come into conflict with PSV's management, according to the Express.

He is now being linked to various clubs in Europe, per the Mirror (h/t Sport Magazine), including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Valencia.
