England vs. Australia: Winners and Losers from 4th Ashes Test

England sailed past Australia inside three days last week to win by an innings and 78 runs, and in doing so, they regained the Ashes.

It was a comfortable victory for the hosts, while the visitors looked in poor form with the bat and at times demoralized with the ball and in the field.

Before the series moves to the Oval for the fifth and final Test, there is still time to reflect on what came to pass at Trent Bridge and the individuals who shone and failed.

Read on for some winners and losers from the fourth Ashes Test.

Winner: Stuart Broad

Stuart Broad's effort in the first innings set the tone for a dominant England display, showing he can lead the bowling attack with James Anderson injured.

Broad took 8-15 in the first innings as Australia were bowled out for just 60 in a performance that will go down in Ashes history as one of the best of all time.

Loser: Michael Clarke

It was another desperately poor game for Australia captain Michael Clarke, who reached double figures in both innings but was out soon after.

Clarke has been on a terrible run of form recently, and to cap off a miserable performance, he announced that the Oval Test would be his last, as he will retire.

Winner: Joe Root

England needed just one innings with the bat, and they looked hugely impressive as they were led to 391-9 declared by Joe Root.

Still in a rich vein of form, Root scored 130 on 176 balls to grind Australia into the dirt and give his side an unassailable advantage going into the second innings.

Loser: Steven Smith

Another Australia batsman to fail was Steven Smith, who was cheaply dismissed in both innings to the delight of his opponents.

Smith has been one of the away side’s top batsmen in recent times, and his display here was uncharacteristic and troubling, as he will likely assume the captaincy soon.

Winner: Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow was brought in for Gary Ballance for the third Test, and at Trent Bridge, he looked the part with the bat, reaching 74 and putting on a big stand with Joe Root.

Bairstow was disappointed not to reach his century, but he showed in this game that he has what it takes to cope with the demands of international cricket.

Loser: Shaun Marsh

Shaun Marsh came into this game on the back of two centuries in the warm-up games as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh, but he failed to assert himself with the bat at Trent Bridge.

He was twice dismissed in single figures as part of two worrying top-order collapses and must surely be cursing his inability to take advantage of a golden opportunity.
