Olympic 2024 Medal Count: Final Tally, Winners from Day 13 Early Events

The back-and-forth battle between China and the United States for the most gold medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics continued on Thursday morning.

China landed three gold medals, two of which came in sports it has dominated, to move back ahead of Team USA with 28 gold medals. The United States enters the afternoon medal events with 27 golds.

Team USA picked up one medal in the morning events from sport climbing, where bronze-medalist Sam Watson set a world record in his third-place match.

The United States needs five medals to be the only nation with 100 medals at the Paris Games.

Team USA's lead in the overall table sits at 25 over China. France is the only other nation with more than 50 overall medals.

Sam Watson was the lone American to win a medal during Thursday's early events.

Watson broke the world record in the men's speed competition in sport climbing in his bronze-medal match against Iran's Reza Alipour.

Watson broke the world record in the event by getting up the wall in 4.74 seconds.

His time was one-hundredth of a second better than the one that earned the gold medal for Veddriq Leonardo of Indonesia.

Watson lost to silver medalist Wu Peng of China in the semifinal round. He only got up the wall in 4.93 seconds in the semifinal.

In fact, Watson took three-tenths of a second off his time from the quarterfinals to the bronze-medal match. He won his quarterfinal in just over five seconds.

Watson's bronze in sport climbing gave Team USA a medal in 28 different types of sports at the Paris Games.

Good luck trying to beat China in diving and weightlifting.

China picked up its sixth gold in diving and third first-place finish in weightlifting on Thursday to move back ahead of Team USA in the gold medal standings.

China has won six golds in diving and three in weightlifting. It also dominated the shooting competitions with five golds.

The gold-medal leader added a first-place finish in the canoe double 500-meter race to take a one-gold lead over Team USA.

The United States countered on Wednesday night with a few golds in track and field. They are expected to earn at least one gold through Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the women's 400-meter hurdles on Thursday afternoon.
