4 Nations Face-Off Standings Predictions

NHL: FEB 04 Devils at Penguins

Each team starts out the tournament by playing three Round Robin games. A regulation victory gives the winner three points and the loser zero points.

If the game is tied after regulation, the teams play a 10-minute overtime period followed, if necessary, by a shootout. An overtime victory gives the winner two points, and the loser one point.

Each team plays three games under this format. The two teams with the most points after the Round Robin will advance to the Feb. 20 championship game.

Here's a prediction as to what the final standings could look like:

  1. United States
  2. Canada
  3. Sweden
  4. Finland

We're picking Team USA to finish first in large part due to their tournament-best goaltending. Vezina candidate Connor Hellebuyck is slated to hold down the crease.

Canada brings a star-studded offense to the table. Any team that can ice Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon when it's not deploying Connor McDavid is going to be a contender.

McDavid has been in a relative slump heading into the tournament, and Crosby was injured in the week leading up to the Face-Off, setting up a potential upset by a talented Swedish forward group highlighted by William Nylander and Jesper Bratt. Victor Hedman will be called on to step up for Sweden's defense in the absence of projected starting netminder Jacob Markstrom from the crease.

Finland will be forced to overcome bad injury luck heading into the competition, which has sidelined key defenders including Miro Heiskanen, Jani Hakanpaa and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Finnish team will hopefully be bolstered by the return of Mikko Rantanen, who is reportedly set to play after missing time with an injury last week.
