College Fantasy Football: MAC Pre-Spring Questions
Here are some key college fantasy football questions to ponder as the Mid-American Conference embarks on spring ball.
BALL STATE
How quickly will the Cardinals adhere to the no-huddle offense new head coach Pete Lembo plans to employ? And who will run the show at quarterback, Kelly Page or Keith Wenning?
BUFFALO
The spread offense was a disaster last fall. Can they improve in year two under Jeff Quinn? Keep an eye on the quarterbacks this spring. Jerry Davis, Alex Zordick and Alex Dennison will all get a look.
KENT STATE
No job is safe with a new head coach taking over the reins, including quarterback where starter Spencer Keith returns. He might find competition in Giorgio Morgan as the team morphs into more of a traditional offensive set.
MIAMI (OH)
Zac Dysert and Austin Boucher will engage in the MAC's most intriguing quarterback battle of the offseason. Both showed tremendous promise last fall.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS
How will NIU replace departing stud RB Chad Spann? What kind of offense will new head coach Dave Doeren, the former defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, implement?
OHIO
With Boo Jackson finally out of eligibility, look for a quarterback competition to heat up between the experienced Phil Bates, Tyler Tettleton and Kyle Snyder.
TEMPLE
How will new head coach Steve Addazio, the former offensive coordinator at Florida, utilize the talented RB tandem of Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown?
Who will line up under center? Mike Gerardi, Chester Stewart and Chris Coyer will compete for the job.
TOLEDO
Terrance Owens and Austin Dantin will duke it out for the starting QB gig.
Can Adonis Thomas pick up where he left off? The running back was dominant in the final stanza of the 2010 season.
WESTERN MICHIGAN
Will star wideout Jordan White receive an additional year of eligibility? We're still waiting to hear from the NCAA.

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl 2010: Sun Belt Conference Football Officially Relevant
Either the world has ended, or Barack Obama's message of change has taken on a brand new meaning in the annals of college football. I say it's a dead heat.
In this, the 2010 college football bowl season, a little-known conference in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (gee, that was a mouthful) has made skeptics out of believers.
Regardless of what happens in the laughably named GoDaddy.com Bowl between Miami (OH) and Middle Tennessee State, the Sun Belt Conference will finish its bowl season with a winning record.
In short, the Sun Belt Conference, long-considered the weakest of the weak, the doormat of all the mid-major conferences, the butt of every joke...is relevant.
The conference began to argue its case with flying colors at the New Orleans Superdome over a week ago, on Dec. 18, when the Troy Trojans took on the Ohio Bobcats in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
Surely Frank Solich had what it took to end the Bobcats' bowl hoodoo, right? After all, the Mid-American Conference was supposed to be stronger. After all, Northern Illinois took Fresno State to school, so you know the possibility was there.
Wrong.
Corey Robinson torched the Ohio defense with 387 yards passing and four touchdowns, while DuJuan Harris ran roughshod for 105 and a score. And it didn't help the likes of poor Boo Jackson to know that big and beefy Jonathan Massaquoi hounded him for 2.5 sacks in a Trojan ambush.
602 yards of total offense told the story as Troy flattened Ohio 48-21.
You know, I am accustomed to seeing the Trojans win bowl games—I associated those Trojans with a certain university from Los Angeles. Problem is, they are on probation because Reggie Bush disgraced his own kind a la Terrell Pryor...and some.
I did not expect these Trojans to win a bowl game, but they did and they deserve all the credit people give them. (And they did give Oklahoma State a test in their 41-38 defeat.)
But it didn't stop there. The Sun Belt's argument for relevancy continued.
Enter Sunday, Boxing Day, Dec. 26, 2010 and the hilariously-named Little Caesars Pizza Bowl (pizza! pizza!) featuring the Toledo Rockets, and the Florida International Golden Panthers.
FIU was making their first-ever trip to a bowl game. Granted, the name of this bowl makes you think of inferior cheese and gas explosions, but that's beside the point. Oh, digressions.
This was a Florida International team that stood tall against Rutgers and Texas A&M while testing Maryland.
An FIU squad that was a few years removed from an ill-fated scuffle against the University of Miami that resulted in an 0-12 season and Mario Cristobal taking the helm.
A Golden Panther squad that finished with a 6-2 conference record and a 6-6 regular season record this year in spite of losing to rivals Florida Atlantic and ending their conference season in disappointing fashion to the Blue Raiders.
The Rockets were expected to rout FIU and spare the now-disgraced Mid-American Conference of its blushes. They were unsuccessful, embarrassing the MAC and delivering the Sun Belt slices of oven-baked vindication in a 34-32 win for the Golden Panthers.
Toledo quarterback Terrance Owens had a nightmarish performance against Florida International, throwing for 131 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. While tailback Adonis Thomas ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns, his efforts will go into Little Caesars Pizza Bowl history as mere footnotes.
Owens's counterpart, Wesley Carroll, a transfer out of Mississippi State, didn't fare any better—throwing for just 140 yards, and a touchdown and pick apiece—but at least he did one completion better (16/27, Owens was 15/27).
People watching this game probably now know who Darriet Perry and Kreg Bown are. Perry rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while Brown helped himself to two of FIU's interceptions on the night.
And that T.Y. Hilton...man, can he run. Hilton had five kickoff returns for 174 yards, a new bowl record.
But this night belonged to Jack Griffin. Unlike Boise State's Kyle Brotzman, Griffin can actually convert field goals when the game is on the line.
His game-winning 34-yard attempt with time running out came off a successful hook-and-lateral play that just passed the first-down line at the Toledo 42...with some help from the Atlantic Coast Conference officials, who Toledo fans may have irreparable animosities towards.
Griffin may go down as the school's first great gridiron hero for his on-the-money kick. And because of his conversion, the Sun Belt Conference will end the 2010 college football bowl season with a winning record.
Now granted, these bowl matches the Sun Belt participate in all involve Mid-American teams. But the possibility that I bring here is that the Sun Belt may be better than people think.
As it continues to be successful in the postseason, the respect is going to keep coming. And more quality recruits will look to play in a conference like the Sun Belt. It becomes a viable alternative because it just knows how to win.
Obama was right. Change has indeed come to America. The Sun Belt Conference gaining relevancy is just one example of that.
2010 Little Caesars Bowl: Toledo vs. Florida International Preview & Prediction
It's not the most thrilling bowl game of the year, nor is Detroit what people picture when they hear "exotic bowl destination". Most people hear the names "Toledo and FIU" and assume this is an FCS playoff game or something.
However, this game should have plenty of emotion for the seniors from both teams, as well as the fact that these two programs will be meeting on the gridiron for the third time in as many years.
Toledo responded well this year after a couple disappointing seasons in 2008 and 2009. Redshirt freshman Terrance Owens threw 12 touchdown passes and only two picks this season in relief of injured starting QB Austin Dantin.
If Toledo wants to win this game, their defense will need to add to the impressive takeaway total this season (33), as they aren't great at keeping opponents off the scoreboard.
Florida International was not expected to be playing in a bowl game this season, as the football program is only nine years old. If you asked the players and coaches, they would tell you the bowl berth is nice, but the sweetest moment of the season up to this point would have to be the beating of Sun Belt powerhouse Troy, 52-35. This allowed FIU to clinch a portion of the conference championship.
Mississippi State transfer quarterback Wesley Carroll is one of the motivational leaders of this team. He threw for 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2010.
Prediction
Notice the above statistics mentioned in this preview, Toledo's defense tied for most takeaways in the nation (Hawaii), and FIU's quarterback is less than careful with the ball in his hands. FIU must keep it on the ground if they want to avoid costly turnovers. I think they fall behind by half, and have to start throwing the football.
Toledo 32 - FIU 20, Toledo takeaways-three
Dr. Bob's Betting Advice For TOLEDO (+17) @ CMU
CENTRAL MICH (-17.0) 38 Toledo 27
This game depends a lot of how healthy Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt is. Opelt injured his throwing shoulder a month ago against Western Michigan, missed 2 1/2 games and tried to play in week 9 against Miami-Ohio. Opelt struggled throwing the ball and was taken out, then later took himself out after reentering the game in the second half.
Opelt has had a week and a half to improve and he should be better, but he's not likely to be as good as was before the injury. Opelt has averaged a stellar 7.7 yards per pass play against teams that would allow 5.9 yppp to an average quarterback, which are better numbers than Central Michigan star Dan LeFevour. Toledo's backup quarterbacks have been horrible, so having Opelt operating at even mediocre levels is a must in this game since the Rockets' defense isn't good enough to keep the Chippewas good attack from scoring a lot of points.
If Opelt were to play at his pre-injury level then I'd only favor Central Michigan by 8 points in this game. If Opelt plays at the level of an average quarterback then I'd favor the Chippewas by 15 1/2 points, but with the extra time off it's likely that Opelt will be more than just average and I'll lean with Toledo based on that assumption. Then again, if Opelt lands on that shoulder again and is taken out then a Central Michigan blowout could ensue.

Offense: The Rockets bring in new coach Tim Beckman who is hoping to improve a moribund offense and a leaky defense. At least they return senior QB Aaron Opelt (6-2, 225), who threw for 2,176 yards with 12 TDs in an injury-plagued season. They also return senior RB DaJuane Collins (5-10, 211), who averaged 5.5 yards per carry with five TDs (700 yards). Sophomore Morgan Williams (5-11, 195), who ran for 1,010 yards despite being hampered by. They return two of the four starting receivers including two-time All-MAC selection Stephen Williams (6-5, 199), who had 781 yards in receiving. He has 144 catches and 15 TDs in his last two seasons. UP front, Toledo returns four starters led by seniors Jared DeWalt (6-4, 318) and senior Buster Garrett (6-3, 286).
Defense: The defense returns nine starters from a unit that allowed 31.4ppg and 381.4 yards per game. Beckman’s defensive background should help in revitalizing this unit. They return three of the four starters on the defensive line. While that’s a good thing, now they need production from those players. The Rockets finished with just 10 sacks in 2008 and that’s because the line was not generating a pass rush. At linebacker, junior Archie Donald returns from their 4-2-5 scheme. He led the team in tackles with 199 last year and is the leader of the defense. The secondary returns four of the five starters including senior S Barry Church (6-2, 219). Church could graduate as a four-time All-MAC selection and is on the Bronco Nagurski and Jim Thorpe lists. He has great size and range.
Outlook: The Rockets face Purdue on the road and then host Colorado at home. They also take on Ohio State in Cleveland and face Florida International on the road. In conference, they host Western Michigan and take on Central Michigan, Ball State and Bowling Green on the road. This is a tough schedule for a new coach that needs to rebuild most of his defense.

Daily Market Wrap Up: Wednesday Night Football
Moving Today's Market
There's no lack of options in tonight's marketplace. A couple of Wednesday night NCAA football games adds to the usual NBA and NHL action. Ball State looks to remain undfeated against Northern Illinois. There is a huge discrepancy in the betting percentages with Ball State receiving 56% of the public's spread bets as 9.5 point favorites. Also in college, the Toledo Rockets travel to Ohio to take on the Akron Zips. Both teams allow a ton of points, so this could be a high-scoring affair. The Zips opened as 5 point favorites at Pinnacle. The line dipped down to Akron -4 before climbing back to its current standing of Akron -6.5. The Zips are receiving almost 75% of the public's spread bets. All of this led to a pair of Smart Money plays triggered on Toledo, including one at The Pig (84-68, +7.60).
In the NBA, the Spurs are still looking for their first win of the season as they travel to take on the young Timberwolves. This Spurs team isn't the squad that has been a league headliner over the last 15 years. Those teams were a strong defensive squad, but this team is allowing over 100 points per game. They are also without one of their best players as Manu Ginobli is still recovering from an injured ankle. San Antonio is a 5 point favorite, and the public is backing them with 70% of the spread bets. The Spurs opened as 4 point favorites at Pinnacle, and the line quickly dropped to San Antonio -3.5 before climbing up to -5. During that movement a Smart Money play was triggered on the Timberwolves at BetOnline (6-1, +4.40).
