Real Madrid veteran midfielder Luka Modrić will return to Los Blancos for the 2024-25 season, according to multiple reports.

According to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, "The 38-year-old has accepted a lower salary as part of his new deal after taking on more of a secondary role at the club this season."

Modrić was called upon as a substitute during Real Madrid's 2-0 triumph over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in the Champions League final, winning his sixth UCL title in the process.

Teammates Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal and Nacho have been along for every one of those rides with Modrić and Los Blancos, with the trio now tied with former Real Madrid great Paco Gento for the most in history. Modrić, per Cortegana, is keen to surpass that mark.

Kroos is not, as he announced on Saturday that he will retire after the Euros this summer. Nacho's future at the club is currently unknown, while Cortegana reported that fullback Lucas Vázquez is set to sign a new deal and return to the club.

And then, of course, is the biggest piece of summer news for Real Madrid—the imminent signing of superstar forward Kylian Mbappé:

As for Modrić, his return keeps a veteran leader and experienced piece of midfield depth in place for Los Blancos, as they look to build upon a fantastic 2023-24 season that saw them win La Liga and Champions League. The UCL title has been claimed by Real Madrid more times than not since the 2013-14 season, with six triumphs in 11 years, an astonishing streak.

Modrić, 38, made 43 appearances between the two competitions this past season (21 starts), registering two goals and six assists. The future of Real Madrid's midfield is centered on superstar Jude Bellingham and players like Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga, but having Modrić available for at least one more year is a boon for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid are truly inevitable.

Despite struggling for much of the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid rallied late for a 2-0 victory.

Dani Carvajal scored a 71st-minute header off a Toni Kroos corner kick for the game-winning goal.

Real Madrid scored 12 minutes later after Dortmund left back Ian Maatsen turned the ball over directly to Jude Bellingham, who found Vinícius Júnior for the goal.

Dortmund dominated the entire first half but had nothing to show for it:

Dortmund had eight shots (three on target), while Real Madrid had two shots (none on target). In fact, Real Madrid has zero first-half shot attempts at all after the 15th minute.

Dortmund even finished the match with more expected goals despite the rough second half:

But none of that mattered, as Real Madrid, the pre-match favorites, pulled through in the second half to clinch victory.

Naturally, fans and analysts alike were impressed with the effort.

Real Madrid has now won 15 Champions League titles, including six since 2014.

Real Madrid's Stunning UCL Rally to Beat Bayern Munich, Reach Final Thrills Fans

Bayern Munich turned back the clock to 1999 and not in a good way.

Thanks to a pair of late goals by Joselu, Real Madrid bested Bayern 2-1 in the second leg of their Champions League semifinals tie to advance 4-3 on aggregate.

For the German giant, it was a collapse reminiscent of Manchester United scoring twice in second-half stoppage time to claim a European title 25 years ago.

A 68th-minute goal from Alphonso Davies put Bayern Munich ahead. An all-German final with Borussia Dortmund looked increasingly likely as the clock ticked up toward the end of regular time. Then Joselu wrote his name into Real Madrid lore forever.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid was among those following the action and reacting as Joselu's goal was upheld after a video review:

You can't be too surprised by Real Madrid snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in the Champions League because winning in Europe is second nature to the club. But that didn't make Wednesday's comeback any less remarkable.

https://twitter.com/arseblog/status/1788313558398226912

That Joselu, who's only playing for Madrid on loan from Espanyol, drove the dagger into Bayern's heart was all the more improbable.

Now, Borussia Dortmund is all that stands between Real Madrid and a 15th European Cup.

Edin Terzić's squad will be the firm sentimental favorites for the Champions League final June 1 at London's Wembley Stadium, but plenty of fans will feel confident the outcome is already set in stone.

Madrid hasn't lost a European Cup final since 1980-81 and you'd bet that winning streak carries on.

Real Madrid has crushed Manchester City's hopes of winning a second consecutive treble after winning the quarterfinal round via penalties (4-4 aggregate, 4-3 PK) on Wednesday.

Antonio Rüdiger's penalty kick clinched the win for Real Madrid, who exacted revenge on Manchester City after losing 4-0 to them in the second leg of last year's Champions League semifinals.

Real Madrid and Manchester City posted a 3-3 draw in the first leg.

Man City dominated the second leg, but they somehow didn't have a victory to show for it.

Rodrygo put Real Madrid up 4-3 on aggregate after this 12th-minute goal:

Kevin De Bruyne responded for Man City in the 76th minute, tying this quarterfinal up at four apiece.

In penalties, Manchester City grabbed the early 1-0 edge after Ederson's save on Luka Modric.

But Andriy Lunin made back-to-back saves on Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, giving Real Madrid the advantage:

Rüdiger's goal later sealed the upset, and now the team is going back to the UCL semifinals for the fourth straight time (and 12th time in 14 years).

Real Madrid fans were clearly elated, and analysts were impressed as well. Meanwhile, others reveled in Manchester City's loss.

Manchester City now turns its attention toward winning the Premier League. With six matches remaining, the Citizens have 76 points, just one ahead of second-place Arsenal.

As for Real Madrid, they'll now face Bayern in the semifinals. Dortmund will take on PSG in the other semi.

The crowd watching the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday got to watch one of the most exciting first-leg matches in championship history.

Real Madrid and Manchester City scored a trio of highlight-reel goals in the second half while battling to a 3-3 draw.

Manchester City's Phil Foden started out the second half by knotting the score at two goals apiece.

Defender Josko Gvardiol then scored a memorable first Manchester City goal to give the sky blues the lead.

City only held onto the lead for eight minutes before Real Madrid's Federico Valverde tied the score.

Real Madrid earned a flurry of shots in the final minutes, but a late go-ahead attempt by Brahim Díaz was blocked before it could make it to the net.

The draw still means that Real Madrid earned redemption after losing 4-0 to City in the second leg of last year's quarterfinals, and that fans got to watch a gripping match from start to finish.

City fans will now keep an eye out for news of Foden, who left the game early with an injury. The midfielder will be key to Manchester City's hopes of repeating the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble.

Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti Accused of Tax Fraud, Prison Sentence Sought

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is facing potential prison time amid allegations that he committed tax fraud.

According to ESPN's Adriana Garcia, Spanish state prosecutors have alleged that Ancelotti committed two counts of tax fraud from 2014 to 2015 related to money earned from image rights.

Ancelotti allegedly "omitted the income corresponding to the exploitation of his image rights that he had transferred to other entities." It is alleged that he failed to account for over $1.09 million in image rights money.

Per Garcia, prosecutors are seeking a prison term of four years and nine months for Ancelotti should he be found guilty.

Thus far, Ancelotti and his representatives have declined to comment on the allegations.

Ancelotti is far from the first high-profile soccer player or coach to be accused of tax fraud in Spain in recent years.

Per Garcia, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to pay substantial fines to avoid jail time after being found guilty of tax fraud in 2016 and 2019, respectively.

Also, Xabi Alonso was accused of fraud in 2019, but he won his case and was found not guilty in a verdict that was upheld by the Spanish Supreme Court.

The 64-year-old Ancelotti is in his second stint at Real Madrid, as he managed the club from 2013 to 2015 before returning in 2021.

During his time with Los Blancos, the Italian manager has won a La Liga title and two UEFA Champions League titles.

Ancelotti enjoyed a successful playing career with Parma, Roma and AC Milan before going on to manage many of the top clubs in the world, including Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan.

After he led Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League titles in 2022, Ancelotti's squad finished second to FC Barcelona in the standings last season.

Ancelotti signed a contract extension with Real Madrid prior to the 2023-24 campaign, and that decision has paid dividends thus far, as Los Blancos are atop the La Liga table, leading second-place Girona by seven points.

Taylor Swift became a primary storyline during the 2023 NFL season after she began dating Travis Kelce. Now, she's impacting the other football too.

According to The Athletic's Guillermo Rai, La Liga side Real Madrid have asked to move a Sunday, May 24 match against Real Betis—the club's final game of its domestic campaign—to give themselves more time to prepare for Swift's The Eras Tour, which will be held at the Bernabeu on Thursday, May 30.

Real Madrid isn't seeking a dramatic change to the schedule, reportedly asking to play the match on Saturday, May 23 instead. But if both clubs find themselves in the running for places on the league table—Real Madrid currently resides in first place, while Real Betis could be fighting for a European berth next season—the matter becomes more complicated, as all league matches are traditionally held at the same date and time on the final week of the season to ensure competitive fairness.

According to that report, the club is also seeking a second date at the Bernabeu for Swift's tour after high demand for the initial date. The imminent signing of Kylian Mbappé is probably the most anticipated arrival of 2024 for Real Madrid supporters, but it would appear that Swift is a very close second.

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé has reportedly agreed to a contract to join Real Madrid once his deal with the French club expires in June.

According to BBC Sport's Guillem Balague, Mbappé has yet to sign the Real Madrid contract but the deal will pay him €15 million ($16 million) per season over five years, plus a €150 million ($161 million) signing bonus. He will reportedly also get to keep a percentage of his image rights.

The 25-year-old France international has spent the past seven seasons at PSG, establishing himself as the club's all-time leading scorer with 244 goals across all competitions.

The move from PSG to Madrid has been expected since last summer when world football insider Fabrizio Romano reported that Mbappé planned to decline his player option for the 2024-25 season with PSG in order to become a free agent.

Although Mbappé has yet to officially sign a contract with the Spanish giants, Balague noted that the deal could be announced as soon as it is no longer possible for PSG and Madrid to face each other in this season's UEFA Champions League.

Balague also reported that Mbappé met with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi last week to inform him of his decision to leave for the Spanish capital.

After a breakout 2016-17 season at AS Monaco in which he scored 26 goals, Mbappé was loaned to PSG, and he eventually signed a full-time deal with them and blossomed into one of the best players in the world.

He has 32 goals in 31 matches for PSG this season, giving him six consecutive seasons with 30 or more goals scored.

During his time with the French club, Les Parisiens won five Ligue 1 titles, and they are on their way to a sixth, as they lead Brest by 13 points this season.

In addition to his success at PSG, Mbappé has dominated on the international stage, helping France win the FIFA World Cup in 2018 en route to being named best young player of the tournament.

Then, at the 2022 World Cup, Les Bleus finished as the runner-up to Argentina, and Mbappé won both the Golden Boot and Silver Ball.

In Real Madrid, Mbappé is set to join a club that currently leads La Liga by six points over Girona.

Los Blancos have won 35 La Liga titles and 14 European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles during their history, both of which are records.

Adding Mbappé is a case of the rich getting richer, but it should come as no surprise, as Real Madrid offer him perhaps the best opportunity to vie for top trophies on a consistent basis.

Also, La Liga was the home base for many years for two of the greatest players of all time in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. With both of them now playing elsewhere, Mbappé can establish himself as the face of the league.
