Real Madrid Outlasts Chelsea in Thriller, Advances to Champions League Semifinals

Karim Benzema is inevitable.

The French star scored the winning goal in extra time as Real Madrid sent Chelsea packing 5-4 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Benzema put Chelsea to the sword in the first leg with a hat trick at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel didn't mince words about his club's precarious position. He said immediately after the 3-1 first-leg defeat on Wednesday that the Blues would "get hammered at the Bernabeu" with a similar showing in the return fixture.

Tuchel's tone didn't change much Monday.

"It is one of the biggest challenges to perform away at the Bernabeu," he told reporters. "It is even more difficult if you have to earn a certain result, if you need to win with a minimum of two goals or better or maybe a three-goal difference, that makes it almost impossible and very, very difficult, but still it is worth trying."

If the German was trying to deploy some reverse psychology, it certainly seemed to work in the first half.

Mason Mount opened the scoring in the 15th minute, continuing what has been a rich vein of form.

Beyond just Mount's goal, Chelsea registered eight total shots and two on target. Real Madrid was limited to three shots, all of which were wide of the mark.

Perhaps the first-place club in La Liga was guilty of resting on its laurels a bit because Madrid flattered to deceive in the opening half. And with the abolition of the away goals rule, the one-goal aggregate lead wasn't as advantageous as it would've been in years past.

Chelsea only needed one more tally to make things really interesting, and Antonio Rudiger duly delivered in the 51st minute.

Real Madrid had reason to feel aggrieved, though, since the goal came from a corner that shouldn't have been a corner in the first place.

Marcos Alonso appeared to net Chelsea's third goal of the match in the 62nd minute when he fired a right-footed shot inside the far post from close range. However, the goal was taken off the board when he was judged to have handled the ball prior to the attempt.

Fresh off a brace in the Blues' 6-0 demolition of Southampton, Timo Werner left no room for interpretation when he feinted twice and managed to sneak the ball just under Thibaut Courtois in the 75th minute.

Chelsea's 4-3 aggregate advantage didn't hold for very long. In the 80th minute, Luka Modric floated an inch-perfect pass to Rodrygo, who volleyed home the equalizer. Between the assist and the finish, it was a masterful piece of attacking.

In the second minute of second-half injury time, Christian Pulisic could've dealt the decisive blow. His volley from inside the box sailed over the bar.

While that was a costly miss, Tuchel had plenty of reason to believe his players could make the vital breakthrough in extra time.

Then Benzema happened.

As many have reflected already, the attention and credit being paid to the 34-year-old are long overdue. Because he shared the pitch with Cristiano Ronaldo, his contributions at Real Madrid have often been overlooked.

Now that he's the main man, it's impossible to ignore Benzema's contributions, which puts his time at the club into a different context. He has undoubtedly earned his place alongside the greatest players to step into the dressing room at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid will wait for the second leg of Manchester City and Atletico Madrid's matchup to learn of its opponent in the semifinals. City holds a 1-0 lead ahead of Wednesday's clash at Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital.

Karim Benzema's Hat Trick Leads Real Madrid Past Chelsea in UCL Quarterfinal Leg 1

Real Madrid earned a 3-1 win over Chelsea in a rematch of last year's Champions League semifinal.

Karim Benzema starred once again with a hat trick in the first leg of Wednesday's UCL quarterfinal tie at Stamford Bridge.

It was the second straight UCL hat trick for Benzema, who also scored three goals against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16. The striker now has 11 goals in eight matches during this Champions League campaign.

Real Madrid will look to close things out in the return leg on April 12 with a trip to the Champions League semifinal on the line. The squad has the most European championships of all time, while Chelsea are seeking a second straight title, but only one can advance in this knockout stage.

Chelsea started strong in the rain on Wednesday, but it was Real Madrid that grabbed an early lead thanks to two quick goals from Benzema.

The two world-class headers came in a span of just three minutes to help Real Madrid take control of the match.

The continued production on big stages has been emblematic of Benzema's overall performance this season:

A deep run in Champions League would certainly help Benzema's case for a Ballon d'Or.

Chelsea still didn't give in with the 2-0 deficit, keeping the pressure on with several close chances.

The home team finally broke through in the 40th minute with a strong header from Kai Havertz:

It created a 2-1 margin at halftime with the tie still in the balance.

Of course, the momentum quickly shifted back to Real Madrid when a mistake by Edouard Mendy created a golden opportunity for Benzema to complete his hat trick.

It put the game out of reach for Chelsea, which couldn't cut the margin despite several chances over the final half hour.

Romelo Lukaku had an open header after coming on as a sub, while a few other shots challenged goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The two-goal deficit remained, creating an uphill battle to avoid elimination.

The Premier League club did beat Real Madrid 2-0 in the second leg of their tie last year, but it could be a tougher feat on the road at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Real will look to move one step closer to its first Champions League title since Cristiano Ronaldo left in 2018.

Top Winners and Losers After Wednesday's Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Results

What a day of Champions League football. Well, at least in one of the games.

Real Madrid overcame a two-goal deficit in aggregate—all in the second half on Wednesday's matchup—to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 (3-2 aggregate) in round of 16 action.

And in the other game—yes, there was a second game—Manchester City and Sporting played to a goalless draw. Not much drama there; City came into the match with a 5-0 edge in aggregate.

But Real Madrid's second-half comeback was the stuff of legend. And the day's winners and losers all hail from that match.

Winner: Karim Benzema

Are you kidding?

Benzema may have been gifted his first goal (more on that below), but in the span of two minutes, he scored two more, and in the process shocked the continent, ended PSG's UCL campaign and further solidified himself as not only one of the finest players of his generation and in Real Madrid history, but also one of the most impactful players in Champions League history.

What's left to say? Because of Benzema, they are singing in the streets of Madrid and groaning in the homes of Paris.

Loser: Gianluigi Donnarumma

What exactly was Gianluigi Donnarumma thinking here?

Inexcusable.

Donnarumma's teammates didn't do him any favors on the next two goals, but this gaffe was when the dam started to break.

Winner: Kylian Mbappe

A bittersweet day for Kylian Mbappe, whose brilliance was not matched by his teammates.

He absolutely bossed long stretches of Wednesday's matchup, putting multiple shots on target and having two goals disallowed, including one that had a dummy for the ages:

But he also got his tally, his second of the tie, with yet another astonishing bit of skill:

This man is one of the best players alive. There's plenty of blame to go around for PSG after this devastating loss, but very little of it—if any—falls on Mbappe.

Loser: PSG's Future

If football was TikTok, PSG's latest post would have "Oh no / Oh no / Oh no, oh no, oh no" blaring in the background.

Because this... this was a disaster.

PSG, which turned down a small fortune to keep Mbappe this season despite the possibility of him leaving on a free after the season, could have justified almost any outcome had they finally won a Champions League title.

But to lose in the round of 16, and to potentially lose Mbappe without getting a cent in return, is literally the worst possible outcome imaginable. If Mbappe leaves—for the club that knocked PSG out of the UCL, no less—it will be remembered as one of the worst moments in club history.

Maybe one of the worst mistakes, from a roster-building perspective, in sports history.

Karim Benzema's 2nd-Half Hat Trick Leads Real Madrid Past PSG in UCL Stunner

Karim Benzema and Real Madrid overcame a two-goal deficit to stun Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 matchup.

After a 1-0 home win in the first leg, PSG were seemingly in a great position after Kylian Mbappe gave them a 1-0 halftime lead at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Real Madrid didn't give in, however, with Benzema scoring three second-half goals to win 3-2 on aggregate.

Benzema needed just 17 minutes to complete the hat trick and transform the tie.

Paris Saint-Germain have a star-studded team with Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar, but they are once again unable to secure a Champions League title. Real Madrid, meanwhile, lead all clubs with 13 European titles and will look to top last year's semifinal appearance.

Real Madrid appeared dead in the water when trailing by two goals on aggregate, but a mistake from Paris goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma kept the tie alive.

It was enough to create drama for the final 30 minutes, but Benzema didn't need that much time as he scored two more goals back-to-back.

The performance from Benzema was unforgettable:

PSG never recovered, unable to find an equalizer in the closing minutes.

It was a major shift after Paris Saint-Germain seemingly had one foot in the quarterfinal after the first half. The French squad took advantage of the counter-attack early in the match, with Mbappe putting a lot of pressure on the defense.

Just like he did in the first leg, Mbappe scored the first goal of the second match with a great finish in the 39th minute.

Neymar provided a perfect pass to set up the break, but it was also an elite finish by Mbappe to get past Thibaut Courtois. The 23-year-old continues to impress as one of the best players in the world.

The forward's chances weren't as prevalent in the second half with Real Madrid doing a much better job of getting back in transition.

The hosts also improved in the final third, leading to Benzema's outstanding finishes to earn the 3-1 victory.

Paris Saint-Germain entered the tournament as one of the favorites to win it all, but a tough draw has them going out in the round of 16. On the other hand, Real Madrid will be a club no one will want to face in the quarterfinal.

Report: Erling Haaland's Future to Be Discussed by Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid is reportedly set to open discussions with Borussia Dortmund about a potential summer transfer for superstar Erling Haaland.

ESPN's Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez reported Friday that Manchester City is "best positioned" to land Haaland, but Los Blancos are still keen on trying to land both the Norwegian striker and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

Barcelona is also said to be involved in the pursuit of Haaland, whose camp has "made it clear" he'd prefer to leave Dortmund this summer and would like to finalize plans in the "next few weeks to avoid further drama," according to the ESPN report.

Haaland scored 41 goals in 41 matches across all competitions for the German club last season and has continued to shine throughout the 2021-22 term, tallying 16 goals and five assists in 14 Bundesliga appearances.

In January, the 21-year-old attacking sensation told Norwegian outlet Viaplay (h/t ESPN) that Dortmund had started to "press" him into making a decision about his future.

"That is what they want," he said. "It means things will happen now. They have started to put a lot of pressure on me, and I have to accept that ... so now is the time to get things started."

Real Madrid leads La Liga with 52 goals scored in 26 matches this season, which has helped the club build a six-point lead over Sevilla atop the table.

Adding Haaland or Mbappe, or potentially both, to the squad would make it even more difficult for their Spanish counterparts to keep pace in the coming years.

That would obviously come at quite a cost, though. In November, agent Volker Struth estimated to German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Marca) the total price to sign Haaland between the transfer fee and the striker's new contract will likely be in the €250-300 million range.

Given Haaland's status as one of the world's top strikers and the high-profile clubs involved in trying to sign him, transfer talks could stretch well into the summer as Dortmund tries to maximize its return.

But it sounds like both the player and the club would prefer to settle the situation well before the transfer window opens to avoid a summer of unrelenting speculation.

Spanish police are investigating the burglary of Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema's home that took place during Sunday's match against Elche.

Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez of ESPN reported the burglary took place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET, which was at the same time Benzema was in action in the 2-2 draw.

Benzema's home was previously broken into in 2019. Teammates Casemiro, Isco and Lucas Vazquez have also been the victims of robberies in recent years as part of a string of events seemingly targeting soccer players.

The report did not include what was stolen from Benzema's home, nor did it say whether anyone was home at the time of the incident.

The Frenchman has been with Real Madrid since 2009, emerging as one of the most decorated scorers in club history.

Report: Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland Summer Transfers Eyed by Real Madrid

Real Madrid won't restrict itself to signing either Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe or Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland this summer; it wants both.

ESPN FC's Mark Ogden reported the Spanish giant is plotting moves for the pair "in an attempt to take advantage of the financial problems at Barcelona by landing the two most sought-after players in world football."

Ogden noted the contracts of Gareth Bale, Isco, Luka Modric and Marcelo are due to expire, which will free up significant space on Madrid's wage bill.

The club failed in its pursuit of Mbappe last summer, with PSG turning down a €200 million bid. The French forward will be a free agent after this season, at which point Real Madrid or anybody else can sign him without paying a transfer fee.

The 23-year-old reiterated his desire to remain in the French capital to finish out the current campaign,

PSG sporting director Leonardo remains optimistic Mbappe will sign a new deal, but that would seemingly require him to make quite the reversal.

Although Haaland is under contract with Dortmund for 2022-23, an exit from Germany could be similarly straightforward thanks to a reported €75 million ($87 million) release fee. Ogden reported in October a transfer is nonetheless going to be expensive because the Norway international will look to earn at least £30 million ($41 million) annually on top of a payment to his representatives.

According to Ogden, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are both contenders to sign Haaland, with the latter looking at the 21-year-old as a potential replacement for Mbappe. Still, Ogden described Real Madrid as the "leading contenders."

On two occasions, Florentino Perez has ushered in an era of Galacticos at the Santiago Bernabeu. The club signed Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and David Beckham in the early 2000s and then brought in Kaka, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

Now, a third class of Galacticos could be incoming.

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema Gets 1-Year Suspended Prison Sentence in Sex-Tape Trial

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was given a one-year suspended prison sentence Wednesday for his role in the blackmailing of former France international teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

Per ESPN's Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez, a court in Versailles, France, found Benzema guilty of "complicity" after he allegedly acted as a middleman for people attempting to blackmail Valbuena with a sex tape found on his phone in 2015.

Benzema, who was also fined $84,000, will appeal the verdict, according to his lawyer.

Axel Angot, Mustapha Zouaoui, Younes Houass and Karim Zenati were the other four men said to be involved in the blackmail attempt, with Zenati alleged to have brought in childhood friend Benzema.

Prosecutors said Benzema helped the group blackmail Valbuena about the sex tape during training camp for the French national team in October 2015, but Benzema said he was trying to warn Valbuena to "be careful" with the "serious criminals" who were trying to extort money from him.

Angot, Zouaoui, Houass and Zenati were handed varying prison sentences that ranged to as much as two-and-a-half years.

Since Benzema's sentence is suspended, it is likely he will go on probation and not serve time in prison, provided he satisfies the terms of the probation.

The 33-year-old Benzema has played for Real Madrid since 2009 and has earned 94 caps for the French national team, although he didn't play for France for nearly six years after the blackmail case's early stages began.

He returned to the squad in June ahead of the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, where he finished as the joint-second top goalscorer with four goals in a French campaign that ended in the round of 16.

Valbuena, 37, has played for Olympiacos since 2019 and has made 52 French national team appearances, but none since the start of the blackmail case in 2015.

David Alaba, Lucas Vazquez Goals Lift Real Madrid to El Clasico Win over Barcelona

Real Madrid continued its recent dominance in El Clasico with a 2-1 win over Barcelona Sunday at the Camp Nou.

The win is Real Madrid's fourth straight against its rival in La Liga matches.

David Alaba scored the opening goal for Los Blancos, while Lucas Vazquez eventually sealed the win with a second goal in extra time.

Sergio Aguero scored a consolation for Barcelona, but it was too late to prevent Real Madrid from earning a key three points in the hunt for a league title.

It was the first El Clasico without Lionel Messi since 2007, and Barcelona went home empty-handed.

The match began slowly with a conservative approach from both sides, but Real Madrid struck first with a brilliant counterattack and finish by Alaba:

Rodrygo earned the assist on a great find to the open center back, who rocketed past the keeper in the top corner.

This was the only goal of the first half, but Barcelona had chances.

Sergino Dest had the best look for the Blaugrana in the opening 45 minutes with a open shot that he sailed over the crossbar:

https://twitter.com/stuholden/status/1452284315258298383

Barcelona had six shots in the first half but were unable to find the net. Gerard Pique also had a chance with a header:

Barcelona stayed aggressive in the second half but had few real chances because of a lack of creativity in the final third. The hosts finished with just two shots on target in the match.

The addition of Aguero in the 74th minute gave the attack more life, although it wasn't enough to even the match.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, played solid defense before using their speed on counters. Vinicius Junior kept pressure on throughout the second half down the left side.

Vazquez eventually put the game out of reach in the 94th on another counterattack after a great run from Marco Asensio.

Dest slightly made up for his earlier miss with an assist to Aguero in the 97th minute, but it was too little, too late.

Both clubs will return to action for midweek La Liga battles on Wednesday. Barcelona will face Rayo Vallecano while Real Madrid hosts Osasuna.

Kylian Mbappe Pursuit by Real Madrid Shows PSG a 'Lack of Respect,' Leonardo Says

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has vented his frustration toward Real Madrid amid the drama around Kylian Mbappe's expected exit.

"It's lasted for two years," the Brazilian told L'Equipe (via soccer journalist Fabrizio Romano). "The transfer window is over, Real Madrid need to stop behaving like this. They need to stop! Mbappe is PSG player and the club wants this relationship to last. It's a lack of respect [to PSG]."

Mbappe remains a member of the PSG squad, but the 22-year-old said this week he was prepared to leave in the summer with his contract due to expire next year.

"I asked to leave because from the moment I didn't want to extend [my contract], I wanted the club to receive a transfer fee to bring in a quality replacement," he said to RMC Sport (via ESPN). "... I wanted everyone to come out of this stronger, that we leave hand in hand, to make a good deal, and I respected that. I said, if you don't want me to leave, I will stay."

Starting in January, Mbappe will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez weighed in on the situation Tuesday.

"In January we will have news from Mbappe," he said to El Debate (via The Athletic's Charlotte Harpur). "We hope that on Jan. 1 everything can be solved."

Perez then walked back those comments:

Although Leonardo's anger is understandable, this was inevitable when PSG spurned Madrid's multiple reported transfer offers for Mbappe. The Frenchman is one of the most coveted talents in the world, so speculation about his future won't fade.

It's impossible to envision a scenario in which Paris Saint-Germain sold Mbappe in the summer and remained as good as it was before. For that reason, holding on to him might've been smart because winning a Champions League title in May would be worth whatever fee the club would've received for him.

The trade-off is that Mbappe's presumed departure will cast a shadow over the French capital for the duration of this campaign.
