Bruins Pushed to Brink of Elimination as Fans Lament 3rd-Period Collapse vs. Panthers

The Boston Bruins wanted to come out with some passion after a fiery Game 3 against the Florida Panthers.

The Bruins were without captain Brad Marchand for the first time in 156 playoff games after he went down with an upper-body injury in Game 3, and players like Trent Frederic promised a response was coming.

That response did come early, but Florida got the crown jewel with a three-goal comeback to take a commanding 3-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Charlie McAvoy delivered the physical response on the first shift, taking Sam Reinhart down in explosive fashion.

However, a big hit wasn't going to be enough to put a dent in the series deficit.

The Bruins needed to strike first, and a first-period power play gave David Pastrnak a chance to do just that as he unleashed a blistering one-timer to give his team the lead.

Boston would build on the lead before the period ended, with a knuckle puck shot from Brandon Carlo finding its way to the back of the net to make it a 2-0 lead.

Florida was not going to bow down easily, however. This was proven when Anton Lundell fired a shot from the corner boards and beat Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman.

The Panthers would end the second period trailing by a single goal but would tie-it when Sam Bennett secured a powerplay tally early in the third.

The Bruins would challenge the call but it would stand as a good goal. To say the Bruins fans accepted this ruling graciously would be inaccurate.

Minutes later, Aleksander Barkov gave Florida its first lead of the game with an excellent dangle and snipe.

The Bruins failed to provide much momentum for the remainder of the game, and Florida coasted to the win and now have three opportunities to clinch a return to the conference finals.

Fans took to social media and declared that the Bruins don't have what it takes to get by the Panthers.

The Bruins will now have to attempt to come back from a 3-1 deficit to pull off the upset. That may sound a little familiar.

After a record-setting campaign a season ago, Boston held a 3-1 lead over Florida in the first round. The Panthers would famously win three straight and pull off a stunner before turning that momentum into a Stanley Cup Final appearance.

The chances of that happening for a Bruins team that has managed to get significantly outshot all series seems a bit unlikely. However, historical precedent says it can be done.

To attempt to make that run, Boston will need to first get a win on the road in Sunrise, Florida. That chance will come on Tuesday with puck-drop set for 7 p.m. ET.

Bruins' Frederic: Sam Bennett Hit 'Pisses off Everyone' amid Brad Marchand Injury

The Boston Bruins aren't happy with Florida Panthers center Sam Bennett after his hit on B's captain Brad Marchand in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

"I think it pisses off everyone," Bruins center Trent Frederic said, per Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic.

"I think this whole team kind of ticks everyone off, to be honest. There's some individuals, obviously, that make guys more frustrated, more mad. Maybe it's frustration. You've still got to go out and do the job. We're still down 2-1, trying to make it 2-2."

Bruins center Pavel Zacha also fired a warning shot to Florida in response to the hit, per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

"I think we have to really go after their top guys. To let them know it's not OK. To go after our captain, that's not OK with us. We're ready to be physical again today and be a little bit harder on them," Zacha said.

And Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery provided his thoughts.

"I don't think I classified it as dirty. I just think it was outside the lines. I think it was someone that plays the game on the edge and he knew what he was doing…he loaded up," Montgomery told reporters.

On replay, Bennett appeared to hit Marchand in the head with his gloved right hand in the first period. Marchand played through two periods but did not return for the third.

Marchand, who is leading all Bruins in postseason scoring with three goals and seven assists, will miss Game 4 on Sunday with an upper-body injury. He is considered day-to-day.

The Panthers are up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Puck drop in Boston for Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Bruins Ripped by NHL Fans as Panthers Take Series Lead with G3 Win in 2024 Playoffs

The raucous Game 3 crowd at TD Garden wasn't enough to get the Boston Bruins' offense going during Friday night's 6-2 loss to the Florida Panthers.

The Panthers now hold a 2-1 Eastern Conference semifinals series lead after a late comeback attempt by the Bruins fell short.

Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk earned a late chance to cut the Bruins' deficit to one goal, but Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made a potentially game-saving stop with 1:37 left in regulation.

Bobrovsky's late heroics continued the Bruins' offensive struggles as they were outshot 33-16 by the Panthers.

After falling into an early one-goal deficit in the first period, the Bruins struggled to push back while being heavily outshot by the Panthers.

When Mason Lohrei was assessed a double minor penalty toward the end of the second frame, Vladimir Tarasenko and Carter Verhaeghe made the Bruins pay with a pair of power-play goals one minute apart.

The crowd at TD Garden booed the Bruins as they headed off the ice for the third period having recorded eight total shots on goal.

To make things worse, Bruins star Brad Marchand suffered an injury that kept him out of the rest of the game.

https://twitter.com/NBerggg/status/1789099304843461021

After Florida defenseman Brandon Montour scored on a third-period power play following a controversial penalty call, the Bruins' offense finally found some purchase.

Jakub Lauko finally beat Bobrovsky with an extra skater on the ice during a delayed penalty five minutes into the third period.

His goal, the first of his playoff career, was also the team's first shot in over 14 minutes.

DeBrusk cut the Panthers' lead to two with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Bruins earned a few chances in the paint during a late power play, but Bobrovsky and Panthers defender Kulikov combined to fend them off.

Florida then added an empty-netter and a late power-play goal to pad the lead.

The Panthers ended the game having gone 4-for-6 on the power play. The Bruins' penalty kill previously allowed just two goals on 33 chances to begin the postseason.

The Bruins will look to even the series at two games apiece when these teams return to TD Garden for Game 4. Puck drop is set for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Bruins Called Out by NHL Fans for Sloppy Play in Game 2 Playoff Loss vs. Panthers

A sloppy and ugly affair resulted in the Boston Bruins losing 6-1 to the host Florida Panthers in Game 2 of their second-round playoff series, which is now knotted at one game apiece.

Florida scored six unanswered goals—three in the second and three in the third—to cruise to the easy win. Aleksander Barkov was the game's No. 1 star with two goals and two assists, while Sam Reinhart added three helpers.

Simply put, the Bruins showed few signs of life after the first period, which resulted in Boston leading 1-0 after a Charlie Coyle goal. The only spark the Bruins showed afterward occurred around the halfway point of the third period, when multiple fights ensued.

Thirteen players in all received game misconduct penalties.

In regards to what happened on the scoreboard, give credit to Florida for taking advantage of a brutal Boston effort, characterized by sloppy turnovers, bewildering mistakes and soft goals.

Steven Lorenz scored after a defensive zone turnover to knot the game at one.

Reinhart found himself with a great scoring opportunity in the second period. Goalie Jeremy Swayman stopped him, but the rebound somehow evaded all of the Bruins and landed on Barkov's stick for the goal.

After the Panthers collected a loose puck, Gustav Forsling scored with two seconds remaining in the second period from a slap shot just past the blue line that somehow found its way into the net for a 3-1 edge.

The worst goal of them all came early in the third, after a costly takeaway from behind the Bruins' net led to two point-blank scoring chances. The first from Reinhart did not connect, but the second one via Eetu Luostarinen did. Now Florida led 4-1.

Florida took a 5-1 lead after two Bruins tried to collect a loose puck in their own zone. Neither got it, Florida collected it and a quick four-on-two situation ensued. It ended with Barkov's second goal, this time on the power play.

The coup de grace was the most unsightly of the bunch, with Brandon Montour scoring a shorthanded goal during a brief moment where it seemed like Florida was on the power play:

The Panthers also outshot the Bruins 33-16, including 26-10 over the final two frames. Needless to say, fans let their opinions known about the performance.

The good news for Boston is that it took one of two from Florida in its barn after a 5-1 Game 1 win, so the Bruins hold home-ice advantage.

Game 3 will take place in Boston on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.

Bruins Win Game 1 vs. Panthers as NHL Fans Credit Momentum from Maple Leafs Series

The Boston Bruins have a 1-0 lead over the Florida Panthers after winning Game 1 of the second-round series 5-1.

Goalie Jeremy Swayman paved the way for Boston on defense, keeping the net clear for most of the game outside of a second-period goal. On offense, the Bruins got help from Morgan Geekie, Mason Lohrei, Brandon Carlo, Justin Brazeau and Jake DeBrusk, each of whom had goals in the win.

The win comes after Boston's overtime thriller against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 7 of the first round. After the Bruins handled Game 1, fans credited the team for carrying their momentum from the win over the weekend.

https://twitter.com/JayLoJL/status/1787671121892143554

The Bruins now have even more momentum on their side with a big Game 1. Boston is seeking revenge after losing to the Panthers in the second round a year ago, and that emotion could have been a factor in the dominant win.

Florida is looking to reach the Stanley Cup Finals for a second consecutive season, but it will need to come back strong in Game 2 to avoid a 2-0 deficit.

The second game of the series takes place Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Bruins' David Pastrnak Exhilarates NHL Fans with OT Goal as Maple Leafs Eliminated

David Pastrnak is the Boston Bruins' Game 7 hero.

Pastrnak scored in overtime Saturday night to punch the Bruins' ticket to the second round with a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Bruins win the first-round series, 4-3.

Pastrnak had previously been held scoreless in Games 5 and 6 of the series.

His overtime series-winner came after Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery called him out prior to the game.

https://twitter.com/ryanstahl_/status/1786959752402190533

The Bruins have now successfully avoided becoming the first team in NHL, NBA or MLB history to blow a 3-1 series lead in consecutive playoffs.

That result was far from certain as Boston's offense struggled through the first two periods Saturday night.

The enthusiasm in the stands at T.D. Garden was momentarily dampened late in the game, when William Nylander put the Leafs on the board midway through the third period.

It only took one minute and 21 seconds for Boston defenseman Hampus Lindholm to get the crowd back on their feet.

After Lindholm's goal, Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman stood tall to take the Leafs to overtime.

He stopped 27 of 28 shots in regulation, then blocked a potential own goal in the final second of the third period.

This is the second consecutive series in which the Bruins have played a Game 7 overtime.

When the puck dropped for the fourth period, Boston faced the possibility of repeating the results of the 2023 first round, in which the Bruins lost in Game 7 overtime to the Panthers in a very similar series:

Pastrnak chased away the ghosts of series past by being the first player to reach the puck after a Lindholm dump-in caromed off the boards and directly in front of the net.

Leafs fans were frustrated that Pastrnak was able to skate past Leafs players including Toronto star Mitch Marner on his way to chasing critical dump-in.

Toronto's loss continues eight straight years of regular-season success followed by playoff heartbreak.

The Leafs have won just one playoff series in those eight trips to the postseason.

https://twitter.com/bodeyc/status/1786960297976119302

The Bruins only have one day off to celebrate the first-round series win before preparing for their next opponent. Boston will seek redemption against the Panthers when their second-round matchup begins Monday night on the road.

Bruins Slammed by NHL Fans for Failing to Close Out Series vs. Maple Leafs in G6 Loss

For the second straight season, the Boston Bruins have blown a 3-1 first-round series lead.

The Bruins missed their second straight chance to eliminate the Toronto Maple Leafs as they lost 2-1 in Thursday night's Game 6.

Both teams will now have the chance to advance to the second round with a win Saturday in Boston.

This marks the fourth straight time a series between the Bruins and Leafs has gone to seven games.

The Maple Leafs have scored two or fewer goals in 11 of their last 12 playoff games.

That was enough to defeat Boston on Thursday.

The Bruins couldn't answer William Nylander's two goals until the final second of the loss, when Morgan Geekie beat Toronto goaltender Joseph Woll.

The low-scoring performance was particularly frustrating for the Bruins given that the Leafs were missing Rocket Richard winner Auston Matthews.

The Bruins' inability to close out the series, even given two straight opportunities to do so, gave fans flashbacks to last season.

Boston opened the 2023 playoffs by seizing a 3-1 series lead against Matthew Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers.

The Bruins then dropped Games 5 and 6 before their season ended in overtime during Game 7 at TD Garden.

The Bruins won't be the only team under pressure to win in Game 7.

The Leafs, who have famously suffered six first-round losses in the past seven seasons, will be under similar scrutiny this weekend.

The puck is set to drop for Game 7 at 8 p.m. in TD Garden.

Bruins Trolled By NHL Fans for Game 5 Loss to Maple Leafs with Auston Matthews Out

The Boston Bruins had the chance to clinch a spot in the second round in overtime Tuesday night against a Toronto Maple Leafs team missing Auston Matthews.

They lost to Leafs rookie Matthew Knies instead.

Knies scored just over two minutes into overtime Tuesday night to seal a 2-1 overtime and extend the first-round series to six games.

The Bruins still hold a 3-2 series advantage.

Knies' game-winner came minutes after Bruins forward Charlie Coyle was robbed by Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll on a shot that would have ended the series and sent Boston to the second round.

The Bruins will now have to end the series during Game 6 in Toronto, or risk elimination themselves in a potential Game 7 back at home.

Boston's inability to close out in Game 5 reminded fans of the 2023 first round, when the Bruins blew a 3-1 series lead on their way to losing to the Florida Panthers in seven games:

Matthews, the NHL's leading goalscorer, was ruled out prior to the game due to what the team said was an illness.

Fans were particularly unimpressed with the Bruins' inability to beat the Leafs without the 2024 Rocket Richard winner. Matthews was instrumental in Toronto's last win over Boston, a 3-2 victory in Game 2 last Monday.

Trent Frederic scored Boston's lone goal of the night, while Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves as the Bruins were outshot 33-28.

The Bruins will get a second chance to close out the series Thursday when Game 6 takes place in Toronto.

Brad Marchand, Bruins Hyped By NHL Fans for Taking 3-1 Series Lead Over Maple Leafs

The Boston Bruins have once again put the Maple Leafs on the brink of first-round elimination.

After ousting Toronto from the playoffs in the first round in 2018 and 2019, Boston is one game away from repeating the feat after cruising to a 3-1 Game 4 victory Saturday night in Toronto.

The Bruins will now head back to TD Garden with a 3-1 first-round series advantage.

Brad Marchand led his team to the win by scoring the 56th playoff goal of his career on a second-period power play.

The tally led him to pass Hall of Famer Cam Neely for the all-time Bruins lead in playoff scoring.

David Pastrnak and James van Riemsdyk also scored in the Bruins' victory, while Jeremy Swayman turned aside 24 of 25 shots faced.

https://twitter.com/BrandonMaki_/status/1784410534999142639

Marchand's franchise-record tally marked the sixth power-play goal of the series for Boston.

Special teams have been a different maker for the Bruins, who scored once on three power-play opportunities Saturday and were perfect on three penalty kills.

Toronto meanwhile registered no shots on a power play granted with fewer than five minutes left on the clock.

Leafs stars Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander appeared visibly frustrated as Toronto fell into a three-goal deficit in the second period:

Leafs players weren't the only ones frustrated by Saturday night's result:

After starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov was pulled following the second period, and Joseph Woll took over in net.

Athough the Leafs were missing Matthews, who did not return to the bench for the start of the third period, Marner scored early in the final frame to bring some life to Scotiabank Arena.

The Bruins responded by stifling the Leafs' offense and preventing the comeback from gaining momentum.

After claiming both games in Toronto, the Bruins are now one win from advancing to the second round for the first time since 2021.

A fourth victory would mark Boston's successful recovery from being upset in the 2023 first round following a record-breaking Presidents' Trophy regular season.

Toronto has appeared in eight straight postseasons in the Matthews era, during which they have earned at least 40 regular-season wins six times.

The team has only advanced past the first round once in 2023, in a run that ended with a five-game second-round loss to the Florida Panthers.

The Leafs now need a Game 5 win in Boston on Tuesday in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Brad Marchand Hyped By NHL Fans as Bruins Win vs. Maple Leafs, Take 2-1 Series Lead

Brad Marchand scored two third-period goals to lead the Boston Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 3 of their first round playoff series, giving the B's a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven matchup.

Marchand's first goal came at the 11:53 mark of the third, or just 28 seconds after Leafs forward Tyler Bertuzzi scored to knot the game at two.

The Bruins captain didn't waste much time giving Boston the lead back after Danton Heinen dug the puck out of the corner and found his teammate waiting in the right faceoff circle.

Marchand added an empty-netter with 36 seconds left to seal the Bruins' win.

The B's and Leafs entered the third period tied at one goal apiece after Toronto's Matthew Knies and Boston's Trent Frederic each scored in the latter half of the second.

Jake DeBrusk gave Boston the lead 1:07 into the third on the power play. Marchand was partially to thank for that one after DeBrusk rebounded his teammate's shot into the net.

Bertuzzi later answered with a tip-in goal, but Marchand, who hadn't scored over the Bruins' first two games, got on the board twice to put this one away. And with that, he's now tied atop the franchise's all-time playoff goal-scoring leaderboard with Cam Neely.

It was a huge win for the Bruins, who regained home-ice advantage and stole crucial momentum away from the Maple Leafs after their 3-2 road win in Game 2.

Marchand was the catalyst for the victory, and fans and analysts alike were certainly impressed by his efforts:

Game 4 will take place in Toronto on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
