Anzhi Makhachkala: From War-Torn Russia Rises a New Breed of Super Club

Mar 15, 2012

Forbes magazine lists Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov as an "investor in distressed companies," so it's hardly surprising the world's 146th-richest man ended up owning a football club in a war-torn corner of his homeland.

That club is Anzhi Makhachkala, and when Kerimov took over in January 2011, he pledged to draw on his vast wealth—estimated at $6.5 billion—to transform them into a major European force.

Kerimov was born and educated in the southern city of Makhachkala, which serves as capital of the republic of Dagestan and lies close to the Russian borders with Georgia and Azerbaijan. The now-46-year-old Kerimov would have known only too well the volatile political climate he would be working against by the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Last September, the New York Times reported Dagestan had overtaken Chechnya as the most dangerous area in the region.

The violence involves a combination of a growing Islamist insurgency along with criminal gangs and clan wars that have plagued Dagestan, home to 2.5 million people, for many years.

A poverty-ridden mountainous republic composed of more than 30 ethnic groups, Dagestan is supported by large financial subsidies from Moscow, while soldiers and the police try to quell almost daily episodes of violence.

Such security fears are the reason Anzhi's players are not based in Makhachkala at all, but on the outskirts of Moscow, from where they fly 1,250 miles to home matches to maintain their safety.

It's a curious and undesirable arrangement to set upon professional athletes, but the large sums of money to be earned clearly promote a tolerance to it. With an oligarch calling the shots, normal rules don't apply.

Kerimov arrived at Anzhi with a reputation for grand gestures. Profiled by the Financial Times as the "Russian Gatsby of his time," he was known for his opulent, celebrity-filled parties, on which it was rumored he would spend as much as $10 million entertaining his guests.

Such indulgence quickly translated to the task at hand with Anzhi. Kerimov signaled his intent with a deal for legendary Brazilian full-back Roberto Carlos, who, despite being 37 and in the dimming twilight of a glittering career, was offered a reported $9 million a year to leave Corinthians and come to Russia.

Unsurprisingly, he accepted.

As a sign of his gratitude (as if $22.5 million over two-and-a-half years wasn't enough), Kerimov treated the 2002 World Cup winner to a Bugatti Veyron sports car worth $3 million on his 38th birthday just two months later—pricking the ears of every footballer and his agent on the planet in the process.

With a single extravagance, Anzhi had put themselves on the map. A previously unremarkable footballing outpost plagued by political unrest and uncertainty was now being talked about as European football's next superpower.

And Kerimov was just getting started.

The 2011-12 Russian Premier League season began last March—and by the time it kicked off, Anzhi had spent around $42 million on new players.

They included Carlos' fellow Brazilians Jucilei, who Kerimov signed for $11.5 million from Corinthians, and Diego Tardelli, who arrived for $5.8 million from Atletico Mineiro.

In the summer of 2011, Kerimov upped the ante still further. Samuel Eto'o arrived from Inter Milan for $30 million and became the highest-paid footballer in history on a gluttonous salary of $555,000/week.

The Cameroon international and three-time Champions League winner strongly disputed the suggestion his move was purely financially motivated. He talked about empire building in an interview with the Guardian:

We are striving to be like Barcelona, they are the inspiration. Barcelona are the reference point in football today, not Manchester City.

It is a matter of opinion whether City provide the closest parallel to Anzhi. ... Money should not be the reason to compare these clubs.

The goal at Anzhi is to achieve something from a region that has not been explored and to bring this team, through a nice football philosophy, to a better standing in the world of football. And that is it.

By the time Eto'o arrived in late August, Yuri Zhirkov had also completed a $17 million move from Chelsea to Anzhi. And with the winter break came a $16 million deal to lure Christopher Samba from Blackburn.

If Anzhi weren't already being taken seriously, the arrival of Guus Hiddink as their manager in February 2012 confirmed beyond any doubt the side's credibility. Hiddink's resume includes spells at PSV, Real Madrid and Chelsea, along with international duties at the Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Russia.

Here's what the respected Dutchman had to say upon his appointment:

The most significant thing for me is that the club is building plans on football development in the republic. It's as much important as the sports result of the first team, and I'm going to pay special attention to this direction.

We spoke much with Suleyman Kerimov about this after which I realized what a huge project I was invited to.

The developments Hiddink spoke of were a reference to Kerimov's plans to build football academies across Dagestan and his desire to use football as a catalyst for change and as a force for good in the area.

"The football club stands out against all the negative news," Kerimov told the Financial Times.

"People are starting to hope for the better. Such stars don’t play everywhere, and, look, they’re in Makhachkala."

"People have something to be proud of," Kerimov continued. "It means they can see something positive there and they gain the motivation to work. On first impressions, Kerimov's involvement at Anzhi might appear a vulgar exercise in buying success, but his motivations clearly run deeper than that."

Could it be that this oligarch has a heart? Are we witnessing a monumental act of football philanthropy?

According to the Financial Times, Kerimov has so far invested over $260 million on players and $130 million on building Anzhi a new stadium. If he truly is motivated by the greater good and not just by the status that comes with owning a football club, the game is a better place with him in it.

Whatever Kerimov's modus operandi might be, it's abundantly clear, Makhachkala and its surrounding areas could use a boost in these most trying of times. Football can help provide it, and the more success and fame they achieve, the more hope and ambition will reach the people.

A good start would be qualifying for the 2012-13 Champions League, which, owing to a restructuring of the Russian Premier League, remains a possibility as the season enters its third and final leg.

Anzhi finished a disappointing eighth at the end of the regular season, but it was enough to see them scrape through to the championship phase and keep their Champions League hopes alive. As things stand, they're three points adrift of the qualification places.

I, for one, am hoping they make it. Even if they don't, you can expect the Russians to be linked to every big-name player in the transfer market this summer. It's worth noting Kerimov wanted Lionel Messi last year, so he could be after the entire Barcelona team this time around.

Hopefully, one day, the city will be safe enough that the members of the team's star-studded roster can actually live there.

Guus Hiddink Heats Up the Anzhi Makhachkala Managerial Battle

Dec 18, 2011

Guus Hiddink (according to his manager) is stepping up his efforts to become the next manager of Anzhi Makhachkala. Hiddink is preparing to give a series of interviews to the world media to talk about his intentions with Anzhi.

The recent twist to the Anzhi Makhachkala saga was reported in the Sovetsky Sport Magazine and published in RT. Hiddink is considering reducing his salary demands in his battle to become the next Anzhi manager.

The talks with Rafa Banitez and Carlo Ancellotti (who is mentioned as another candidate) have been placed on hold. The reason is to see what will be the results for Guus Hiddink and his ambitions for Anzhi.

The other candidates who have been mentioned for the Anzhi job are Arsene Wenger and Didier Deschamps. There have been no comments from either party with regard to the Anzhi managerial position.

The possibility exists that Hiddink was using the inflated salary demand as a bargaining chip for the Anzhi managerial job. Wenger and Deschamps do not appear to be interested in going to Russia at the present time.

The competition for the Anzhi position is between Hiddink, Benitez and Ancellotti. It remains to be seen whether Hiddink will receive the job in January. The only conclusion is that competition between the three for the top position of Anzhi Makhachkala is going to heat up in January,

Rafael Benitez Talking with Anzhi Makhachkala for Coaching Job?

Dec 12, 2011

Rafael Benitez is understood to have held talks with Anzhi Makhachkala. The purpose of these talks is for Benitez to become the new coach of the club.

The news was publicized in Marca (the Spanish online newspaper) and RT (the international news and sports source from Russia). Anzhi has been under the guidance of caretaker managers Roberto Carlos and Andrey Gordeev since the departure of previous coach Gadzhi Gadzhiev.

Rafael Benitez has been looking for a team to coach since his departure from Inter Milan in 2010. Other candidates who have been linked with he club include Guus Hiddink, Arsene Wenger and Didier Deschamps.

Arsene Wenger and Didier Deschamps have not made any comments at the present time. Meanwhile, Guus Hiddink has expressed an interest in Anzhi if the club is willing to pay him $20 million.

The talks with Rafael Benitez have come as a surprise and thrown a new name in contention for the coaching position. It has squashed my previous opinion of Wenger or Deschamps taking the job.

Benitez has had the experience of winning two La Liga titles for Valencia and a UEFA Champions League trophy for Liverpool. It is hoped that he will accept the position but that remains to be seen.

Guus Hiddink: Is He Overpricing Himself out of Anzhi Makhachkala?

Dec 4, 2011

Guus Hiddink has agreed to sign with Anzhi Makhachkala if the club is willing to pay him $20 million a year. Anzhi Makhachkala is willing to pay $12 million for the services of the former coach of the Turkish National World Football Team.

The news was reported by Raisport and published in RT as Anzhi Makhachkala looks for a new coach. Roberto Carlos and Andrey Gordeev are serving as temporary coaches since the dismissal of Gadzhi Gadzhiev in September 2011.

Hiddink appears to be tempted to move to Anzhi Makhachkala on his own terms. He has seen the club pay a big amount of money to sign Roberto Carlos and Samuel Eto'o.

The only difference was that Anzhi Makhachkala paid enough money for the services of Roberto Carlos and Samuel Eto'o of their own free will. No job seeker (including sports) would demand a salary of a future employer.

Hiddink should know that demanding a certain amount of salary from a supervisor amounts to overpricing himself out of a job. The former coach of Turkey and Russia must take into account that he did not take Russia to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The same can be applied for Hiddink's gesture as coach of the Turkish National World Football Team. Turkey did not classify for the 2012 Euro Cup which does not help the equation for Hiddink.

I am willing to predict that Arsene Wenger or Didier Deschamps may be the new coach for the next Anzhi Makhachkala season.

World Football: Guus Hiddink to Sign with Anzhi Makhachkala?

Nov 20, 2011

Guus Hiddink was interviewed by RT (a global television station based in Russia) concerning his future in world football. Hiddink did not rule out Anzhi Makhachkala in the future and considered it a project with prestige.

Hiddink was forced to resign as coach of the Turkish National World Football team after it failed to reach the Championships of Europe. Hiddink is currently resting before deciding his future.

Hiddink also ruled out any move to Chelsea FC in the future. Hiddink made his comments about Chelsea FC while recognizing his friendship with Roman Abramovich (Chelsea FC owner).

Anzhi Makhachkala has been in the news during the year 2011 signing personalities such as Roberto Carlos and Samuel Eto'o. Anzhi Makhachkala has been linked with Fabio Capello (English National World Football Team) and Luis Felipe Scolari (Brazil).

Hiddink is not the only person mentioned as possibly going to Anzhi Makhachkala. Didier Drogba (Chelsea FC) has been linked with Anzhi Makhachkala starting January 2012.

The news about Drogba was reported in The Daily Mail and published in RT. According to The Daily Mail and RT,  Drogba wants to extend his contract with Chelsea for two more years.

Chelsea FC wanted to renew for one year which has lead Anzhi to consider signing Drogba. It remains to be seen what will transpire.

World Football: Anzhi Makhachkala Denies Rumors of Samuel Eto'o Loan to PSG

Nov 1, 2011

Anzhi Makhachkala has denied rumors about loaning Samuel Eto'o to Paris St. Germain (PSG) during the Russian Premier League winter vacation. The rumors (which were published in the Inside Football webpage) states that Eto'o expressed an interest in moving to France during an interview with Canal +.

Alexander Udaltsov (Anzhi Makhachkala's spokesperson) stated that he personally contacted Eto'o about the rumors. Eto'o denied making any comments to Canal + or any other media about being loaned during the Russian Premier League vacation.

The attempt to check the rumor on the Inside Football webpage did not reveal any news about Eto'o or Paris St. Germain. Instead, the Inside Football webpage contained information about the New York Giants (an NFL Team).

The Italian sports magazine La Gazzetta Dello Sport reported a rumor about Eto'o returning to Inter Milan on a loan basis. The rumor was just that, a rumor, as Eto'o and Anzhi did not reply to the news by La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The latest talk about Eto'o and Anzhi comes from Sam Nightingale of Teamtalk. Nightingale commented that Suleyman Kerymov (Anzhi Makhachkala owner) told Eto'o about the club's future plans.

Eto'o (according to Nightingale) revealed that more players will be signing with Anzhi as the years progress towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. It remains to be seen what will transpire for Anzhi in the years ahead.

Marcello Lippi Denies Job Offer from FC Anzhi Makhachkala

Oct 21, 2011

Marcello Lippi (Italian National Football Team Coach) denies receiving a job offer from FC Anzhi Makhachkala. Lippi added that he would accept an offer from Anzhi Makhachkala (or any team in Russia) to coach.

The rumors were published in the Italian Sports Magazine Sportmediaset.it (as well as Tuttomercatoweb.com and RT.com) and published in Goal.com. The rumors also included Marco Materrazzi (former Inter Milan defender) as Lippi's assistant and a $4.8 Million salary.

Lippi said that it would be interesting to be a coach of Anzhi Makhachkala. The idea of Lippi coaching Anzhi is still far fetched but anything goes in the current era.

Anzhi Makhachkala is the emerging club in Russia whose coach and player is Roberto Carlos. Anzhi and Roberto Carlos have been signing players or have been rumored to sign them.

Anzhi currently has Samuel Eto'o, Yuri Zhivkov, Diego Tardelli, Jucilei Da Silva and Roberto Carlos on its roster. Anzhi has been linked with Neymar, Carlos Tevez, Anelka, Gennaro Gattusso, Steven Gerrard, Robin Van Persie and Frank Lampard.

The signings have been true while there have been reports of possible signings which have been refuted by Roberto Carlos. He (at one point) ordered a media boycott by Anzhi secondary to fictitious interviews with him concerning Van Persie, Anelka, Gerrard and Lampard.

Roberto Carlos (in response to the rumors) said that he wanted to concentrate on his job as a coach and player. Anzhi Makhachkala is currently in eight place in the 2011-2012 Russian Premier League table.
