Top Clash at the Castle Matches to Watch

Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre

After having his moment ruined by CM Punk and Damian Priest at WrestleMania 40, Drew McIntyre will finally get his chance at revenge this weekend at Clash at the Castle.

McIntyre beat Seth Rollins at WrestleMania to become the new world heavyweight champion, but his decision to haunt Punk came back to haunt him, as Punk attacked him.

That allowed Priest to successfully cash in his Money in the Bank contract on McIntyre and become world champion for the first time, and it left The Scottish Warriors searching for answers.

In addition to potentially getting back at Priest, McIntyre can perhaps atone for what happened to him at the first Clash at the Castle two years ago.

McIntyre faced Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at that event in Wales, and just when it seemed he had Reigns beat, Solo Sikoa interfered and cost him.

This time, Clash at the Castle is being held in McIntyre's home country, and he figures to have enormous crowd support, which will make for a magnificent atmosphere.

Cody Rhodes vs. AJ Styles

Cody Rhodes and AJ Styles met for the first time at Backlash, and it was an absolute classic that saw Rhodes come out on top to retain the WWE Championship.

Styles asked SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis for another title shot in the weeks that followed, but when Aldis refused, it appeared as though Styles was going to retire.

However, it was all a ruse, as The Phenomenal One attacked Cody instead, setting the stage for a rematch at Clash at the Castle.

The American Nightmare raised the stakes even more by making it an "I Quit" match, meaning the only way to win is by making the other Superstar submit.

It is difficult to envision Rhodes giving up based in his babyface character, but the match against Styles promises to be a great one regardless and after they showcased their chemistry at Backlash.

Sami Zayn vs. Chad Gable

While all five matches on the Clash at the Castle card have a chance to be excellent, it will likely be hard to beat the Intercontinental Championship bout between Sami Zayn and Chad Gable for match of the night honors.

Zayn and Gable are two of the best in-ring performers in the business, plus it can be argued that their storyline has been the best in wrestling over the past couple of months.

After helping coach Zayn up en route to his IC title win over Gunther at WrestleMania, Gable turned heel on Zayn and has since become abusive toward his Alpha Academy stablemates as well.

Otis has remained loyal to Gable despite his actions and has helped him in his matches, which could play a factor in Gable potentially beating Zayn for the first singles title of his WWE career.

However, if Otis finally turns his back on Gable, it may be exactly what Zayn needs in order to retain.

Regardless of the result, Zayn and Gable have worked well together in the past, and they should put on another classic in Scotland.

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe and AEW.

Randy Orton Talks Return from Injury, WWE Future

Randy Orton made a successful return to WWE at Survivor Series in November, but there was a time when it wasn't clear if he would be able to step back into the squared circle after undergoing spinal fusion surgery.

In an interview with SportsKeeda WrestleBinge (starts at :30 mark), Orton explained he would have remained involved "some way, shape or form" with WWE, possibly as a coach or on-the-road producer, if his in-ring career had ended due to the injury that required surgery.

Orton was written off television in May 2022 after RK-Bro was defeated by the Usos for the undisputed WWE tag team titles on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

The Viper made his long-awaited return at Survivor Series in November as the fifth member of Cody Rhodes' team in the men's WarGames match.

There has been no indication anything was ever wrong with Orton since coming back. He has worked regularly on television, most recently losing to Gunther in a controversial finish at King and Queen of the Ring on May 25.

Orton remains one of the most reliable main-event performers in WWE. His return only helped strengthen the top of their roster and it wouldn't be a surprise if he moved into some sort of backstage role, similar to Triple H and Shawn Michaels, whenever his career comes to an end.

Christian Cage Reveals AEW Contract Details

In the midst of arguably the best run of his entire career, Christian Cage figures to be a major player in AEW for a long time.

During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), Christian said he believes his current contract has three years remaining on it:

"I always said that I would do it till it wasn't fun, and that was my barometer on it so, how can I not be having fun right now? It's still fun, it's still fun. I have no timeline, I signed a contract. I think I have another three years left on this contract so we'll get to the end of that and then see what happens but you know, I feel like I have a lot of knowledge. I don't know everything but I know a lot and I feel like I think (about) the business differently and I layout matches and I see matches differently than other people do. I would like to, at some point, when the time is right to obviously give back to the business that has done what it's done for me."

Christian debuted in AEW at Revolution in March 2021, two months after he was on WWE television as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble. He said in the same interview with Van Vliet that Jon Moxley who recruited him to AEW after learning he hadn't signed a contract with WWE following that Rumble appearance.

The signing has turned out to be one of the best moves AEW has made, particularly when Christian turned heel and formed the Patriarchy with Luchasaurus and Nick Wayne.

Christian and Adam Copeland, who debuted in AEW at WrestleDream in October, got to work a long-term program against each other for the first time in their storied careers.

Copeland's injury suffered at Double or Nothing does open the door for the duo to eventually reunite and chase the tag titles whenever he is able to return.

For the time being, though, Christian will almost certainly remain one of the best parts of AEW television as the evil leader of the Patriarchy.

Drew McIntyre Trolls CM Punk

WWE continues to do a great job of finding ways to draw out the Drew McIntyre-CM Punk feud until Punk can return to the ring.

The latest piece of the story came on X when McIntyre trolled his rival by mocking Punk, including poking fun at the recent incident when he was locked in WWE headquarters.

The situation with Punk occurred being locked in WWE headquarters occurred on the day of Backlash: France. He was on the pre-show panel and revealed afterward he got locked in the building.

The Scottish Warrior's description of needing "tricep strength" to get out is amusing since Punk is still rehabbing from a torn triceps he suffered in the Royal Rumble match.

It's still unclear when Punk will be able to return to action following the injury, but he has said it will be "soon."

An ideal scenario would be for Punk to be ready by SummerSlam since his eventual match with McIntyre is one of the most-anticipated in WWE whenever it happens.

In the meantime, McIntyre will look to regain the world heavyweight title from Damian Priest when the two square off on June 15 at Clash at the Castle: Scotland.

WWE Can Shock Fans With This CM Punk Swerve at Clash at the Castle

Chris Roling
Jun 2, 2024

Most pro wrestling fans think they know where things are going in the feud between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre as WWE marches to Clash at the Castle: Scotland on June 15.

Which means it's the perfect opportunity for all involved to pull off an unforgettable swerve.

In Glasgow, McIntyre will challenge Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship. For fans, it feels super obvious that Punk will show up and continue the theme of costing his rival everything, helping Priest retain and building that inevitable feeling showdown between the two over the summer.

But....

What if Punk helped McIntyre win the title?

Think about how compelling it would be for WWE to flip this whole thing on its head. After costing McIntyre the title at WrestleMania XL via Priest cash-in just moments after his big win and being a proverbial thorn in his side since, Punk becomes the reason McIntyre gets the belt back at all.

This narrative flip would enrage McIntyre even more because now, the man he hates the most played a role in the championship belt around his waist. Fans won't view his win as "legitimate" and rest assured Punk, one of the greatest of all time on the mic, will exploit that fact at every moment possible.

Once medically cleared, this would make Punk look like a borderline genius, too. He's obviously headed into a major feud with McIntyre over the summer, so his puppeteering a title shot into the feud for himself is just crafty. Plus, it's perfectly within his character to say that when he finally wins a title in WWE again, he wants to be stealing it off someone he hates most—not someone he's indifferent about, such as Priest.

Such an idea works to accomplish plenty of other things, too. Part of the appeal for this moment for McIntyre is he's back in the stomping grounds of his home country of Scotland. He was robbed of a similar moment a few years ago when losing to Roman Reigns.

This, in an interesting twist, would still let McIntrye get that special moment in front of a friendly crowd, yet also surprise and drive a must-see story. The fact he couldn't "enjoy" it more as opposed to if he had won the title clean would be a lot of fun, with everyone from the live audience to the onlookers from home in on the joke.

Priest could benefit from this, too. If he must lose the title, better to do it in a situation filled with shenanigans involving two of the most dominant names in the sport outright so that when the time comes for him to get back in the title scene, he can claim he never lost clean.

Besides, Priest doesn't need a title to keep the must-see happenings of Judgment Day going right now. He's got plenty of other things to worry about as his group falls apart without Rhea Ripley as Liv Morgan does her thing. It's probably better for his story to focus on that than have him drop the title in a momentum-crushing loss to someone a slight step down on the ladder in the men's division right now.

The execution of this idea doesn't have to be anything too wild, either. Keep it simple like at 'Mania, where McIntyre was so caught up in trash-talking Punk that he got blindsided and it cost him everything.

Or, perhaps it would be better to play into that Judgment Day angle. Priest's friends—maybe mix Morgan in, too, to keep driving that point home—come out to help him and Punk intervenes, helping McIntyre pick up the win.

Talk about a table-setter for the summer with some major payoffs at SummerSlam: McIntyre is champ, Priest is free of a devaluing loss and focused on a must-see faction story, Punk is challenging for a top title in perhaps the best one-on-one feud of the past few years.

Plus, of course, it would register as a surprise and the journey to the payoff feud would be more enjoyable. McIntyre being the first guy angry to win a championship as Punk mocks him across the globe while threatening to take it is too good for WWE not to do.

Perhaps there's hope for this to come to fruition, too, given the talent of the Superstars involved and the care for long-term storytelling and character work in the Triple H-led creative.

One has to think all involved at least see the opportunity to swerve fans with a shocker like this. Doing so wouldn't just be memorable—it would take what could be a by-the-books feud between McIntyre and Punk and turn it up to 11 in the sweltering heat of summer.
