The 2024 New York Marathon takes place on Sunday, with runners from around the world descending on The Big Apple for the platinum-level race.

Last year, Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia was the first man to cross the finish line at 2:04:58 and Hellen Obiri was the first woman at 2:27:23.

In the wheelchair race, Marcel Hug finished as the first overall male competitor at 1:25:29 and Catherine Debrunner finished the women's race at 1:39:32.

They topped their categories, which included 51,402 total finishers, the third-most ever.

This year's racers will participate with different goals in mind.

Some will be chasing a victory, looking to etch their name in the history books alongside of last year's winners. Others will seek to improve on personal bests or even to just finish the run and cross it off their bucket lists.

Ahead of Sunday's annual extravaganza, here is all of the vital details, including the course map, street closures, and event details.

Salt Lake City, Utah to Host 2034 Winter Olympics After French Alps Hosts in 2030

For the first time since 2002, the Winter Olympics are set to return to the United States.

Members of the International Olympic Committee voted on Wednesday for the 2034 Winter Games to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, the same city that hosted the Games in 2002. This will be the fifth time a U.S. city has hosted the Winter Games, which will come after the French Alps hosts in 2030.

"We are ready. Everything is in place," Fraser Bullock, the leader of Salt Lake City's bid committee, said in a presentation at the IOC session Wednesday, per Tom Schad of USA Today. "But beyond our physical assets, you can count on our people. As great as our venues are, our people are even better."

The campus at the University of Utah will act as the Olympic Village for the Winter Games, and it was announced that Salt Lake City has proposed to be the first city to offer an Athlete Family Village to host the relatives of the competitors. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn explained the initiative at Wednesday's IOC session:

Schad noted that Wednesday's vote was more of a formality after Salt Lake City was already determined as the "best option" for 2034. However, a bit of controversy arose when some IOC members criticized the United States "for its recent political actions around the World Anti-Doping Agency and the controversial doping case involving 23 Chinese swimmers." Still, the vote passed by an overwhelming margin of 83-6.

"I'm sorry for you, and for us, that this issue arose now," IOC president Thomas Bach told Salt Lake's bid committee.

The venues for some of the marquee events at the Winter Games will include figure skating being held at the Delta Center, the home of the Utah Jazz. Skiing events will take place at Snowbasin Resort, and snowboarding events will be held in Park City, Utah.

NBA Legend Shawn Kemp Says Campaign to Bring SuperSonics Back to Seattle Won't Stop

An NBA team is almost certainly coming back to Seattle. At some point. Hopefully.

Shawn Kemp has no plans on resting until there's a formal announcement.

“We’re not going to stop with the process here until we get the actual Sonics back,” the six-time All-Star told Law Murray of The Athletic. “We want the Sonics back, because the people in this community deserves that.”

The NBA held a preseason game in Seattle between the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers on Monday. It was the first time the NBA held a game in Seattle since 2018.

There has been a constant clamoring for an NBA return to Seattle since the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 and became the Thunder. The Sonics are the only team with an NBA championship since the ABA-NBA merger to relocate.

Commissioner Adam Silver has been tight-lipped on the league's potential expansion plans. As rumors swirled over the summer regarding teams being added in Seattle and Las Vegas, Silver quickly halted optimism—at least for now.

“We are not discussing that at this time,” Silver told reporters in June. “As I’ve said before, at some point, this league will invariably expand, just not at this moment.”

Kemp played for the Sonics from 1989 to 1997, earning three All-NBA selections and helping lead the franchise to the 1996 NBA Finals. He and Hall of Fame guard Gary Payton have been at the forefront of the push behind the scenes to get an NBA team back in Seattle.

Simon Ricci and Brooke Starn were the top performers in the men's and women's events at Sunday's San Francisco Marathon.

Ricci clocked in at 2:31:42. He did a great job of preserving his stamina for the latter stages of the race. He was averaging 5:25 per mile when he hit the 24-mile mark and 5:33 as he crossed the finish line.

That helped Ricci wrap up well ahead of Sumner Jones, who completed his race in 2:38.48.

Starn, who ran competitively for Harvard before transferring to UC Davis, averaged 6:18 per mile for a 2:44:38 overall time. Traversing the downtown terrain was probably nothing new for the Danville, California, native.

Cal Calamia, meanwhile, made history as the first-ever non-binary marathon winner (3:00:03). They were also the top performer in the non-binary category in the Bay to Breakers in May.

The San Francisco full marathon got underway along The Embarcadero near Mission Street. Competitors ran along the San Francisco Bay until crossing the legendary Golden Gate Bridge.

Upon turning back toward the city, runners traveled through the Presidio and Golden Gate Park before heading east toward the bay and along the coast to the finish.

Jimmy Butler Expects to Return from Knee Injury Before NBA Playoffs

The Minnesota Timberwolves will apparently receive a major boost for the NBA playoffs.

All-Star Jimmy Butler addressed the media Sunday for the first time since he underwent surgery on his right knee Feb. 25 and said he plans on returning for the postseason, per Kyle Ratke of NBA.com.

"Oh yeah, oh yeah, I plan on doing it," Butler said. "I can't give you the exact date, but I want to come back and I want to help. I want to play…I just really want to play in the playoffs. First game, second game, Tuesday, whatever, I just really want to play."

Minnesota has treaded water at 4-4 since the former Chicago Bull went down with the injury. It occupies the Western Conference's No. 6 seed.

However, a small winning or losing streak could drastically change its situation. It is just two games behind the fourth-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder but a mere two games ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets, who are outside of the postseason picture.

Butler's return would make the Timberwolves a much more formidable foe for any Western Conference team, considering he is a four-time All-Star who is averaging 22.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per contest.

He can extend his game beyond the arc (35.6 percent from three-point range) and attack the rim, but his defensive prowess makes him one of the league's best two-way players as a three-time All-Defensive selection.

Butler frequently guards the opponent's best player and could find himself in matchups against the likes of James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Paul George, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson or Damian Lillard in a playoff series should Minnesota make it.

While recovering from a knee injury, Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler dusted off the cobwebs on his Twitter account to pump up his team in the final quarter of an intense game against the Utah Jazz at Vivint Smart Home Arena on Friday.

Timberwolves guard Jeff Teague appeared to lower his shoulder into Utah's Ricky Rubio, which sent the Jazz guard to the floor. No one threw punches, but officials ejected Teague with a flagrant-2 foul.

Jazz fans didn't take kindly to Teague, but Butler offered a different take, tweeting, "Haven't used Twitter in years. But yeah Jeff that's what I like to see. Rubio getting up quick for no reason."

Minutes later, Jazz forward Jae Crowder received a technical after he went face-to-face with Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau, and Butler wasn't having it.

He wrote: "Jae get away from my coach. You don't want no smoke either."

After the game, Crowder chose not to engage in a social media beef and offered a more formal way to discuss differences: "I DON'T TWITTER BEEF I'LL LEAVE THAT TO U.. BUT U GOT MY PHONE NUMBER AND KNOW MY HOME ADDRESS..!! THE REST CAN BE HISTORY."

Crowder collected a second technical foul with 45.3 seconds remaining, which totaled three ejections for the game. Karl Anthony-Towns had two technicals in the first half.

The Jazz won the contest 116-108.

Jimmy Butler Out Indefinitely After Successful Surgery on Knee Injury

Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee, the team announced Sunday.

Butler injured his knee in Minnesota's 120-102 loss to the Houston Rockets on Friday.

The Chicago Tribune's K.C. Johnson reported Saturday that Butler was hoping to return in time for the start of the 2018 NBA playoffs, while The Vertical's Shams Charania reported the four-time All-Star could be back in four to six weeks.

Butler is averaging 22.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists in his first season in Minnesota.

It's impossible to understate his importance to the Timberwolves. According to NBA.com, Minnesota has a 7.8 net rating when Butler is on the court, but minus-7.3 when he's on the bench.

His presence is felt particularly on the defensive end. Opponents are shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from three-point range when Butler is playing, per NBA.com. Those numbers climb to 50.5 percent and 38.9 percent, respectively, when Butler is resting or unavailable.

Even if Butler gets back to 100 percent in time for the playoffs, it may not matter all that much for Minnesota. Only two games separate the third-seeded Timberwolves (37-26) from the seventh-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder (34-27).

The Timberwolves shouldn't fall out of the top eight over the next couple of months, but they could very easily slip to sixth or seventh in the Western Conference with a poor stretch of results. The team is 3-4 without Butler this year.

Should Minnesota tumble down the standings, then a first-round matchup with any one of the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors or San Antonio Spurs could beckon. Even a full-strength Timberwolves team would struggle to advance past any one of those three teams.

Jimmy Butler Proposes to Play Lou Williams for $100,000 in Response to Tweet

Moe Moton
Feb 23, 2018

Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Jimmy Butler laid down a challenge for Los Angeles Clippers guard Lou Williams and shared his proposal with ESPN's Cassidy Hubbarth before tipoff with the Houston Rockets on Friday night at the Toyota Center.

The star forward offered to play Williams one-on-one for $100,000, which is what each member of Team LeBron took home for an All-Star Game victory over Team Stephen at Staples Center.

Butler didn't log a single minute in Sunday's contest as a reserve on Stephen Curry's squad. Afterward, Williams tweeted him about his decision to sit out:

In fairness to Butler, Minnesota played the final game before All-Star Weekend against the Los Angeles Lakers. He also had the tough task of guarding Rockets star James Harden on his team's first game back.

Despite the lucrative offer, Williams may not take the bait. He said earlier this week he didn't care that Butler was on the bench:

Nonetheless, we'll await his response.

Washington State quarterback Luke Falk withdrew from the Senior Bowl on Friday in order to attend the funeral of former Cougars teammate Tyler Hilinski, according to his agency, Rep 1 Sports (via Stefanie Loh of the Seattle Times).

Hilinski, who served as Falk's backup at Washington State, was found dead by suicide Jan. 16.

In honor of Hilinski, Falk wore No. 3 at the Senior Bowl practices.

Falk explained his reasoning behind the number switch to reporters earlier this week: "I just felt like [the jersey switch] is what I needed to do. He needs to be remembered. He was an amazing person and an amazing soul. This guy was one of the most outgoing, bubbly ... just a guy you want to be around. And people need to know it."

According to Loh, Hilinski's funeral will be held Saturday at Damien High School in La Verne, California.

Falk threw for at least 30 touchdowns each of the past three seasons at Washington State and finished his career with 14,481 passing yards, 119 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.

Jimmy Butler Will Not Play vs. Warriors Due to Knee Injury

Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Jimmy Butler will miss Thursday's game against the Golden State Warriors due to a knee injury, according to Marc J. Spears of ESPN.

This will be the fourth straight game he's missed, and Minnesota's gone 2-1 in his absence.

Despite the nagging injury, he is one of the Timberwolves' leaders when healthy. He is averaging 21.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists in his first campaign with the team after it acquired him via trade from the Chicago Bulls last June.

Butler is a four-time All-Star and three-time member of an All-Defensive team and consistently guards the opponent's best perimeter and wing players while serving as a go-to option on the offensive end. He reached All-NBA Third Team status last season for the Bulls with a career-best 23.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

While it is unrealistic for the Timberwolves to expect anyone to replicate what Butler does, they do have other pieces to shoulder the load on the wing while he is out.

Jamal Crawford, Andrew Wiggins and Marcus Georges-Hunt all figure to see more playing time, and Karl-Anthony Towns can anchor the offense from the frontcourt.
