Craig Kimbrel, Phillies Bullpen Leave Fans Furious As D-Backs Rally for Game 4 Win

The Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen blew a 5-2 seventh-inning lead en route to a 6-5 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on Friday evening.

Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas delivered a game-tying, two-run blow in the bottom of the eighth before a Gabriel Moreno single scored Ketel Marte for the game-winner later in the frame.

Christian Walker's bases-loaded walk in the seventh previously slashed the Phillies' lead to 5-3.

This was a bullpen game for both the Phillies and the Diamondbacks, and Philadelphia had the upper hand through six-and-a-half innings thanks to a Kyle Schwarber solo home run, a Brandon Marsh double, an Alec Bohm single that scored two and a Trea Turner sacrifice fly from the fourth through seventh innings.

But Craig Kimbrel and the Phillies' pitching staff could not hang on.

Kimbrel began the eighth and immediately gave up a leadoff double to Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. After an Evan Longoria lineout, a pinch-hitting Thomas delivered an outside fastball into right field.

Despite those struggles, Kimbrel stayed in the game. He got Geraldo Perdomo to strike out, but a Marte single and a Corbin Carroll hit-by-pitch put runners on second and first. Jose Alvarado came on in relief of Kimbrel, but Moreno soon delivered the game-winner.

Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald then shut the door with three strikeouts, including a game-closing whiff on Trea Turner with Kyle Schwarber on second base after a two-out double, to earn the save.

Simply put, Philadelphia clutched this game in its grasp but let it slip away.

The bullpen bent but didn't completely break in the seventh despite Gregory Soto and Orion Kerkering combining to give up a single and three walks, which only led to one run.

The cracks were showing at that point, though, and the floodgates opened in the eighth as Arizona chipped away at Kimbrel and took the lead for good.

This has been a rough two days for Kimbrel, who allowed four baserunners in the ninth inning capped by a game-winning Marte single to lose a 2-1 matchup to Arizona in Game 3. Now Game 4 sees Kimbrel as the losing pitcher once again.

This is ultimately a night where the Phillies' bullpen takes the hit for the loss, and fans and analysts alike pointed out the relief pitchers' struggles, specifically Kimbrel.

The best-of-seven NLCS is now tied at two games apiece. Game 5 will take place in Phoenix's Chase Field on Saturday at 8:07 p.m. ET.

Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber has set the record for most postseason home runs by a left-handed hitter (19) after his solo shot against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on Monday.

Schwarber entered the evening tied with Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson atop the list at 18 homers apiece, but his fourth-inning blast off Diamondbacks left-handed reliever Kyle Nelson puts him in the solo lead.

The home run, which went 408 feet, was Schwarber's fourth against Arizona this series alone. He hit a solo homer in Game 1 and added two more in Game 2, both of which ended with Philadelphia victories. The Game 4 homer cut Arizona's lead to 2-1.

Schwarber has been a postseason superstar in Philadelphia, hitting six home runs last year en route to guiding the Phils to the pennant.

He also smacked five homers for the 2015 Chicago Cubs during their playoff run.

The 30-year-old is now fifth all-time on the playoff home run list behind Manny Ramirez (29), Jose Altuve (26), Bernie Williams (22) and Derek Jeter (20).

Phillies' Rob Thomson on G3 Loss: 'Gotta Dust Yourself off and Come Back Tomorrow'

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson isn't sweating his team's walk-off loss in Game 3 of the NLCS.

Thomson spoke to reporters after the 2-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, saying his team needs to "dust [themselves] off and come back tomorrow."

Ketel Marte hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Diamondbacks their first NLCS victory since 2001.

The Phillies dominated the first two games of the series by a combined score of 15-3 and remain an overwhelming favorite to advance to their second straight World Series. The Diamondbacks were an underwhelming 84-78 during the regular season and rank among the most unlikely teams to ever make an LDS.

Arizona's hero Thursday night, Brandon Pfaadt, was also among the most unlikely in recent memory. Pfaadt struck out nine and gave up only two hits over 5.2 innings of shutout baseball after going 3-9 with a 5.72 ERA and 1.41 WHIP during the regular season. Even giving Pfaadt the ball in such a high-leverage situation was considered a risk and he was surprisingly brilliant in a head-to-head duel with Ranger Suarez.

The two teams head back to the diamond Friday night in Arizona.

Phillies' Craig Kimbrel Ripped by Fans in NLCS Game 3 Loss to Marte, Diamondbacks

After looking completely overmatched in the first two games, the Arizona Diamondbacks have made the 2023 National League Championship Series interesting with a walk-off 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 on Thursday.

Ketel Marte delivered the game-winning hit off Phillies closer Craig Kimbrel with a bases-loaded RBI single.

Kimbrel had been able to avoid a late-game meltdown in the playoffs coming into today. He hadn't given up a run on one hit, two walks and two strikeouts in four previous appearances in the postseason.

This was the game Phillies fans had been fearing given how erratic Kimbrel had been all season. He opened the ninth by walking Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who easily stole second base. Pavin Smith took second on defensive indifference after reaching on an infield single.

After Trea Turner saved a run with a terrific play on Emmanuel Rivera's grounder to shortstop to get Gurriel out at the plate, Geraldo Perdomo walked on six pitches to set up Marte's moment in the spotlight.

Kimbrel was the main target of criticism by fans and analysts after the Diamondbacks were able to win their first game of the series:

https://twitter.com/bluehen95/status/1715159187196403784

It's certainly fair to criticize Kimbrel's performance in this game. He didn't look good and threw 24 pitches to record one out. But there were multiple questionable calls from home plate umpire Dan Iassogna called balls that could have changed the entire inning.

Another problem is the Phillies offense had their worst game of the playoffs. Five Diamondbacks pitchers combined to hold Philadelphia to just three hits. Brandon Marsh's double in the top of the third was the team's only extra-base hit.

Bryce Harper scored the lone Phillies run on a wild pitch by Ryan Thompson in the top of the seventh.

After getting outscored 15-3 in two games at Citizens Bank Park, the Diamondbacks found the opening they needed in the friendly confines of Chase Field.

Diamondbacks rookie Brandon Pfaadt has allowed no runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts in 10 innings over his last two playoff starts after giving up three runs in 2.2 innings of his first postseason outing against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card series.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo has yet to announce a starter for Friday. Left-hander Christopher Sánchez is expected to start for the Phillies.

The Diamondbacks can even up the series if they hold serve at home in Game 4 on Friday at 8:07 p.m. ET. Philadelphia hasn't lost back-to-back games since losing three straight from Sept. 28-30, which included being swept by the New York Mets in a doubleheader.

Phillies Fans Buy NLCS Game 3 Tickets to Prevent Diamondbacks Fans From Attending

Philadelphia Phillies fans are not planning on letting the fact that Game 3 of the NLCS takes place in Arizona stop them from getting home-field advantage.

Phillies fans are reserving seats at Chase Field just to keep Diamondbacks fans out of them, according to PhillyVoice's Shamus Clancy.

Tickets to Thursday's Game 3 at Chase Field are currently selling for $19 each with fees on SeatGeek.

In contrast, if the series makes it back to Citizens Bank Park for Game 6 in Philadelphia, fans will pay more than $300 for standing-room-only tickets.

After a 5-3 win and 10-0 blowout in Games 1 and 2, the Phillies hold a 2-0 series lead.

The Diamondbacks ranked 20th in the MLB with an average attendance of approximately 24,000 during the 2023 season, according to ESPN.

This isn't the first time the Diamondbacks have been called out for small crowds at Chase Field. Fewer than 13,000 fans attended a Thursday night game on September 6 as Arizona was fighting for a National League Wild Card spot.

Although the Arizona Republic's Jeremy Cluff noted there was a Drake concert in the area on the same night, giving some explanation for the light crowd, Diamondbacks third baseman Evan Longoria said the team noticed the empty seats.

"I think in the dugout, obviously, guys were trying to create some energy and some feel," Longoria said after that night's 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies, per the Arizona Republic's Theo Mackie. "Some of that can be, and I'm not saying this to knock the fans, but when there's not that many people in the building, it tends to feel a little bit dead, too.

"And I don't think that has anything to do with the way the team in the dugout felt. It's just that, sometimes, when it's quiet in here, it feels a little bit more dead than it actually is. And some of that is on us to be able to bring that energy."

Philadelphia fans are now taking advantage of some pessimism following a 10-run blowout to bring back that feeling for Longoria and the Diamondbacks as they fight to keep the Phillies from gaining a nearly impossible-to-beat 3-0 hold on the series.

Move aside, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," there's a new baseball anthem in Philadelphia.

For the past two seasons the Philadelphia Phillies have used Calum Scott's "Dancing on my Own" as their rallying cry, playing it at Citizens Bank Park after wins. The team has become synonymous with the song at this point.

And with Scott's song hitting 1 billion streams on Spotify on Wednesday, Scott took to X—formerly known as Twitter—to thank his fans and the Phillies for helping the song endure over the last few years.

Scott and Phillies' fans have been hearing plenty of that song over the last few weeks as their team has dominated its way to a 2-0 series lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS and had to beat the No. 1 overall seed Atlanta Braves to get there.

"Dancing on my Own" was being blasted in Philadelphia's locker room following the NLDS victory over Atlanta.

With the Phillies two wins away from a second-consecutive World Series appearance, it's very possible that Scott will see his streaming numbers continue to soar over the next few weeks.

Fans Hype Kyle Schwarber, Aaron Nola as Phillies Dominate Diamondbacks in NLCS Game 2

The Philadelphia Phillies were firing on all cylinders Tuesday night.

The Phillies took Game 1 of the NLCS 5-3 over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday but did not let it get that close in Game 2, cruising to a 10-0 victory to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

Shortstop Trea Turner got the ball rolling in the first inning with a home run, and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber knocked two additional bombs by the sixth inning. The Phillies put up three additional runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Starting pitcher Aaron Nola was equally responsible for the dominant showing, tossing six shutout innings while only allowing three hits and recording seven strikeout. He accomplished this without issuing any walks and only throwing 82 pitches.

Schwarber was 2-3 while also drawing a walk on the day. Turner was 1-2 and drew two walks, third baseman Alec Bohm had a hit and two RBIs and catcher J.T. Realmuto had two hits with three RBIs. Outfielder Brandon Marsh hit an RBI double and outfielder Nick Castellanos also contributed an RBI.

However, the major star of the day in the batter's box was Schwarber, and fans were quick to praise his clutch hitting.

Nola also received significant buzz, with fans saying he delivered exactly the performance the team needed.

After Tuesday's win, the Phillies are now just two wins away from returning to the World Series.

Philadelphia will look to keep the train rolling in Arizona while the Diamondbacks will look to try to get back into the series. That opportunity will come on Thursday at 5:07 p.m. ET.

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly Doesn't Expect Phillies Crowd in NLCS to Top WBC

Opposing players keep riling up the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans.

This time, Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly—who will take the mound in Game 2—said that he doesn't expect the Citizens Bank Park crowd to be any more raucous than what he faced as a member of Team USA during the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic against Venezuela:

These are the sort of moments that Philly fans live for. If providing bulletin board material to a fan base is a thing, Kelly earned front and center billing:

Since last postseason, the Phillies are 10-2 at Citizens Bank Park in the playoffs. The home-field advantage has been real. And Orlando Arcia, he of the ill-fated "attaboy Harper" moment, can attest to the very real dangers of giving these Phillies or their fans any excuse to be petty.
