Jared McCain Talks Duke, Cooper Flagg, March Madness, 76ers and More in B/R Interview

Doric Sam
Mar 31, 2025
Boston Celtics v Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers rookie and Duke alum Jared McCain has a bold prediction for how far the Blue Devils can go in the 2025 NCAA tournament.

"2025 national champs is how far we'll go," McCain told B/R in an interview before attending No. 1 Duke's Sweet 16 matchup against No. 4 Arizona on Thursday.

The Blue Devils moved closer to making McCain's prediction a reality, outlasting the Wildcats 100-93 on Thursday before trouncing No. 2 Alabama 85-65 in the Elite Eight on Saturday to reach the Final Four in San Antonio for the first time since 2022, the program's final year under legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski. McCain has been impressed with Duke's 35-3 campaign under his former head coach Jon Scheyer, saying the team is peaking at the right time.

"I think they've played really well, I think they've gotten better throughout the season, and I think that's the main thing you want in a college team. … You want to be playing the best in March, and that's happening for us right now," McCain said. "I think those early losses [against] Kansas and Kentucky, I think those helped us. I think all teams need those early losses, and we learned from them, and we obviously became a better team from them. … I think they're better than what they were and I think they're playing their best basketball right now."

One of the primary catalysts for Duke's success has been star freshman Cooper Flagg, who is one of the finalists for National Player of the Year. Flagg's incredible performances throughout the season solidified what McCain already knew about the 18-year-old's winning mentality.

"When I first saw him, I saw him play in high school and I got to scrimmage with him, and he just makes winning plays. That's who you want to play with," McCain said of Flagg. "He's unselfish, and sometimes I heard Scheyer talk about it, like he needs to be even more selfish. He's a great person to play with, good person outside of the court, and those are the teammates that you want to have. It would've been really cool to play with him at Duke, but I'm excited just watching him. He's obviously an elite player."

McCain also reminisced about his own March Madness experience last year, which included two 30-point performances and an upset win over No. 1 Houston in the Sweet 16 before Duke lost to NC State in the Elite Eight.

"When we beat Houston to go to the Elite Eight, I just remember celebrating in the back with your best friends at the time," said McCain, who scored 32 points in the loss to the Wolfpack. "It's almost the greatest feeling in the world, because all the hard work, everything you've gone through throughout the season, you're with them so much through school, through practices, it just means a lot."

After being selected by the Sixers with the No. 16 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, McCain quickly turned heads as one of the best first-year players in the league. He was named Rookie of the Month in November, which featured a career-high 34-point performance in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 21-year-old attributed his easy transition to the NBA to the struggles he endured before the season started.

Ad Placeholder

"In Summer League, I definitely struggled, so I watched film from there and I learned from that," McCain said. "I was on the scout team for training camp, so I was able to just play super free, and it didn't really matter what happened because they really wanted the other team to win, but you know, I was winning. I think it was pretty seamless for me. I definitely had my struggles in Summer League, but it felt nice. I felt comfortable, and whenever I got in the game, I knew I was just gonna go out there and trust my work, and it was gonna pay off."

Ad Placeholder

Unfortunately, McCain's rookie year was cut short after 23 games due to a torn meniscus that required season-ending surgery. He ended the year with averages of 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists. Despite the injury, McCain is maintaining his positive outlook as he continues his rehab and recovery.

Ad Placeholder

"I'm doing great, I'm doing great mentally, physically," he said. "I can't wait to get back out there. Watching the games, it can get frustrating, but I know that this happened for a reason, and I know I'll be back even better."

McCain undoubtedly wasn't the only person to feel frustrated while watching Sixers games this season, as Philadelphia has trudged through a massively disappointing campaign. Stars Joel Embiid (knee) and Paul George (adductor) have also been ruled out for the remainder of the season, and Tyrese Maxey has missed significant time throughout the year with multiple injuries. The team is 23-52 and has already been eliminated from playoff contention, falling short of the postseason for the first time since 2016-17.

"It's an up-and-down season, it happens, but I always like to think you gotta go through hard times for the sun to come out. It's gotta rain before the sun comes out," McCain said optimistically. "I always look at it from a positive outlook, and I feel like once we're all healthy, once we're all back, we'll be a great team. We just gotta get there, we gotta build our chemistry, and I think that'll come with next season."

During his time away from the court, McCain has continued to grow his brand through a new partnership with Dove Men+Care. He said he uses the products as part of his pregame routines, and he hopes to be an example of how self-care can be just as beneficial on the court as it is off of it.

"A lot of my partnerships, I like to make sure they fit with my brand and are very authentic to me, and I think it was perfect," McCain said of the partnership, noting that the Whole Body Deo is his favorite line of products. "My whole team knows, the organization knows whenever I feel good, whenever I feel like I look good, I feel like I play good. With Dove Men+Care, it makes it super easy, I use it every day. It's just a seamless partnership, it makes perfect sense for me."

That type of confidence helped McCain set himself apart from other rookies through his unique use of social media. Known for his TikTok dance videos, he said he didn't feel the need to cut back on his social media usage when he got to the NBA, though he became more selective about the timing of his posts.

"I feel like I was able to keep it up. I think it's something that I've done since I was in high school, so I wasn't gonna stop posting," he said. "Obviously, depending on how the season goes and how I'm playing, you feel like you just want to get off social media sometimes, so just depending on that, that's how I determine if I'm posting. If I just wanted to post a dance, post me singing or doing something stupid, I didn't really care, just don't gotta look at the comments."

For now, McCain is counting down to his eventual return to the court. He said he plans to help the Sixers get back to their winning ways, and he'll do whatever it takes to make that happen.

"I think what I bring to the table is a winning attitude. Winning plays, whatever that is, shooting, leadership, being able to distribute the ball, whatever it is," McCain said. "I can't wait to just play basketball. I was talking to my teammates earlier about how, once I get out there, I might just cry the first time I check into the game. So I'm just excited to be back."

Marcus Morris Sr.: 'I Don't Trust' 76ers' Daryl Morey After Viral AI Comments

Scott Polacek
Mar 18, 2025
Chicago Bulls v Philadelphia 76ers

It's safe to say Marcus Morris Sr. isn't the biggest fan of Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey.

Morey made waves during an interview with Pablo Torre when he suggested his front office uses artificial intelligence to help in the decision-making process. That didn't sit too well with Morris given his comments during a conversation with NBA insider Kevin O'Connor

"I don't trust Daryl Morey," Morris said. "I just don't trust him. I think he's thinking too far ahead of the way basketball needs to be played. He's trying to do a whole new team. He's trying to bring guys in. He's flipping them in and out in and out in and out. Does he even understand the dynamic of being in Philadelphia and what guys you need to play in Philadelphia? Understand how the team needs to jell first before you start talking about AI.

Ad Placeholder

"What does AI do? I understand the effects it can have in other spots, maybe the offense and the numbers and things like that. But telling you what guys you should choose and what you're trying to do? What has he won? He hasn't won in so long."

It should be noted Morey made it clear AI isn't the sole driving force in any decision-making process for the 76ers.

Ad Placeholder

Rather, he explained: "We absolutely use models as a vote in any decision. How much of that decision depends on how much the assumptions behind those models don't change and their past success rates."

He also said, "We'll treat them almost like one scout."

Ad Placeholder

Morris' relationship with James Harden might also be impacting his opinion, as he continued and said, "You tell my guy JH (James Harden) that you're gonna do something for him. A guy that you brought from all these teams, and then you don't know—like the AI tell him not to pay James Harden this amount of money?"

Harden's relationship with Morey and the 76ers went sour last season before the team traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers. Morris was part of that trade and came to Philadelphia from L.A. before the 76ers traded him to the Indiana Pacers.

Morris finished the 2023-24 campaign on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ad Placeholder

Harden famously said Morey was a "liar" before the 76ers ultimately traded him. He surely didn't always feel that way about the 76ers president, though, seeing how they were also together on the Houston Rockets before their time in Philadelphia.

Morey was in the front office in Houston for 13 seasons before being with the 76ers during the last five campaigns. While his teams have yet to win a championship, as Morris pointed out, they have been consistent playoff contenders.

Yet this season has been a disappointment in Philadelphia as the club deals with injuries and poor performance. It is 23-45 and six games out of the final spot in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament.

There surely won't be a run to the NBA Finals this season, which means the only AI that has ever helped the 76ers reach basketball's biggest stage remains Allen Iverson.

Shams: NBA Investigating 76ers About Tyrese Maxey, Paul George Missing Games

Zach Bachar
Mar 14, 2025
Portland Trail Blazers v Philadelphia 76ers

The NBA is investigating the Philadelphia 76ers regarding multiple recent games missed by the team's stars, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"I'm told the Philadelphia 76ers are another team the NBA has started an investigation on and looked into," Charania said during a Friday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show (6:13 mark). "Just based on, you've had Tyrese Maxey miss time, we know Paul George has missed time."

George and Maxey have both missed Philadelphia's past four games due to groin and back injuries, respectively.

George has also been dealing with knee issues throughout the year.

The investigation may not lead to a punishment for the 76ers, though.

Ad Placeholder

"I think with Philadelphia, it looks a little bit more legitimate, maybe," Charania added (6:30 mark). "Because you think about Tyrese Maxey, he's been banged up all year. And Paul George, the five games before the All-Star break in February, I'm told Paul George was playing with pain-killing injections."

The reported concerns from the NBA appear to stem from Philadelphia potentially keeping Maxey and George out of games. The 76ers sit at No. 12 in the Eastern Conference standings with a 22-43 record.

Ad Placeholder

Philadelphia's first-round pick in the 2025 NBA draft is top-six protected, meaning that it'll head to the Oklahoma City Thunder if the 76ers fall below No. 6 in the draft lottery.

As things currently stand, the 76ers own the sixth-worst record in the association.

George's first season in Philadelphia hasn't gone as planned, with the nine-time All-Star averaging just 16.2 points per game and appearing in a mere 41 contests.

Charania reported Thursday that George was set to consult with doctors "this week" on treatment options for his groin and knee injuries, listing surgery as a possibility.

Ad Placeholder

Maxey has remained relatively healthier compared to George, but he's still missed 13 games this season.

In April 2024, the NBA fined the 76ers $100,000 for violating league injury reporting rules. As part of the announcement, the association explained that the fine "takes into account the 76ers’ prior history of fines for violating injury reporting rules."

As Philadelphia closes out its 2024-25 campaign, the NBA is reportedly conducting another investigation involving the organization.

NBA Rumors: 76ers' Paul George Consulting with Doctors on Injuries; Surgery Possible

Joseph Zucker
Mar 13, 2025
Golden State Warriors v Philadelphia 76ers

Just when you thought the 2024-25 season couldn't get any worse for the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday that star wing Paul George "is consulting with doctors this week on treatment options for his groin and knee injuries."

According to Charania, surgery is among the possibilities, and a final decision could come by early next week.

A segment of Sixers fans will argue shutting the nine-time All-Star down is better for the organization's overall outlook.

Philly is 13th in the Eastern Conference at 22-43. Forget about earning a top-six seed. Qualifying for the play-in tournament is probably out of the question at this point.

Ad Placeholder

With 2022-23 MVP Joel Embiid already out for the year, the 76ers might as well fully embrace their current situation and focus on improving their draft odds. For now, they have a 9.8 percent chance of getting the No. 1 pick and 39.5 percent odds of landing in the top four, per Tankathon.

Their first-round pick will go to the Thunder if they land seventh or worse in the lottery.

Having the opportunity to take Duke star Cooper Flagg or one of Rutgers' Ace Bailey or Dylan Harper would be big for Philadelphia from two different standpoints.

Ad Placeholder

The front office would have an easier time pivoting to a younger nucleus down the road if the championship window with Embiid and George is closed for good. In the event president of basketball operations Daryl Morey is still thinking only in the short term, then having a top-three selection would help to compensate for the fact George might be declining far quicker than anybody expected.

The 34-year-old has missed 24 games through injury, and he has performed at well below his usual standards when he did suit up. He has his third-worst scoring average over a full season and also his third-lowest clip from beyond the arc.

Ad Placeholder

Flagg, Bailey or Harper could serve as an eventual successor to George in a Big Three with Embiid and Maxey, or Morey would have a valuable trade chip to help land more veteran talent.

The Sixers might be on a road to nowhere unless they receive a massive stroke of good fortune soon. Accidentally backsliding their way to the top of the 2025 draft would probably qualify.

NBA Insider: Paul George Could Be Shut Down by 76ers with Joel Embiid Out

Mike Chiari
Mar 4, 2025
Golden State Warriors v Philadelphia 76ers

Amid a massively disappointing 2024-25 season, the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly may soon shut down star forward Paul George.

According to ESPN's Tim Bontemps, George "could be following close behind" superstar center Joel Embiid, who was shut down for the remainder of the season last week due to ongoing knee issues.

The Sixers signed George to a four-year, $211.58 million contract during the offseason, but he has been plagued by myriad injuries, causing him to miss 20 of the team's 60 games this season.

George, 34, began the season on the shelf with a knee ailment, and he has most recently been dealing with a groin injury that caused him to miss Monday's loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Ad Placeholder

The addition of George alongside Embiid and Tyrese Maxey was supposed to make the Sixers one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference, but with George and Embiid missing so much time, Philly has performed well below expectations.

At 21-39, the 76ers are 12th in the Eastern Conference, and they are very much in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign.

Ad Placeholder

Even when on the court, George has not been his usual self this season, as evidenced by averages of 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.4 three-pointers made and 1.8 steals per game.

Ad Placeholder

The nine-time All-Star boasts career averages of 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.6 three-pointers made and 1.7 steals per contest, plus he shoots 44.0 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from beyond the arc, but he is shooting just 43.3 percent from the floor and 36.3 percent from deep this season.

Despite George being asked to play a featured role at times due to Embiid's injuries, his scoring average this season is the lowest he has had in a season since his rookie year with the exception of 2014-15 when he was limited to six games due to injury.

At this point, the Sixers are more incentivized to lose down the stretch than they are to win since their first-round pick is top-six protected.

If Philadelphia does not pick in the top six, the selection will convey to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is something the Sixers would like to avoid.

Additionally, with George signed for at least two more seasons, there is little reason to risk a late-season injury that could impact his availability next season.

The Sixers have a chance to bounce back and be a threat next season if George, Embiid and Maxey all stay healthy, which is why there is plenty of logic behind the idea of shutting George down the rest of the way.

76ers Rumors: Joel Embiid 'Went Directly' to Josh Harris About Knee Injury Concerns

Zach Bachar
Mar 1, 2025
Brooklyn Nets v Philadelphia 76ers

Joel Embiid approached Philadelphia 76ers governor Josh Harris regarding concerns with the health of his left knee, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"I'm told Joel Embiid went directly to 76ers owner Josh Harris about the state of his knee and about where the realization he's at with what's in the best interests of him, the organization, as far as a potential shutdown," Charania said during a Saturday appearance on NBA Countdown.

"Over the last month, we've seen fundamental differences between Joel Embiid and the 76ers as far as Embiid believing that he needs a different treatment approach for this versus the 76ers feeling, 'You play on it, get in better condition and you could continue on this year,'" he added.

On Friday, Philadelphia announced that the star center would miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to “ongoing issues with his left knee.”

The former MVP appeared in just 19 games as he dealt with knee issues throughout the course of the year. He averaged 23.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game on 44.4/29.9/88.2 shooting splits.

Charania previously reported that Embiid received "regular and frequent" injections in his knee during the season.

The 76ers have struggled without the seven-time All-Star, sitting at No. 12 in the Eastern Conference standings with a 20-38 record.

The 30-year-old appeared in just 39 games during his 2023-24 campaign, missing multiple months after undergoing surgery to address a meniscus injury in the same left knee.

Before Embiid's current season came to an early end, he met with Harris to discuss his knee issues.

NBA Rumors: Joel Embiid Surgery Talk Surprised 76ers; Star Hoping for 'Cure-All'

Adam Wells
Feb 27, 2025
Philadelphia 76ers v Golden State Warriors

The Philadelphia 76ers were caught off guard when Joel Embiid originally brought up the idea of undergoing another surgery on his knee.

Per NBA insider Jake Fischer, Embiid's disclosure about a potential procedure was a "surprise" to the Sixers.

Fischer also noted that Embiid is hoping for a "cure-all procedure" that will allow him to return to being one of the most dominant players in the NBA:

"According to those with knowledge of the situation, Embiid is still hoping for some sort of cure-all procedure that would allow him to return to his MVP form. Heading into this week, however, neither the Sixers' own medical staff nor any of the external doctors consulted throughout this saga had been able to pinpoint a clear-cut pathway to steering Embiid in his desired direction."

Ad Placeholder

The initial admission from Embiid came during the 76ers' loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 9. ESPN's Lisa Salters reported on the ABC telecast of the game that Embiid told her he might need another surgery on his left knee.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Embiid explained he was "looking into every option" because the knee has been giving him frequent problems.

Ad Placeholder

"I think the straightforward answer is that when you've got something that's inconsistent, at some point, you've got to do something about it," Embiid said. "We don't know what it is. We're looking into every option."

On Monday, Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Embiid was looking into four different "radical" procedures that could repair the damage in his knee.

The procedures range from microfracture surgery to meniscus replacement to low-dose radiation therapy or osteotomy. The latter involves breaking a bone in the hip to realign the joint. Recovery time for this procedures could range from six to 12 months.

Ad Placeholder

Philadelphia is not yet at the point where it's considering shutting Embiid down for the remainder of this season.

"Not at that point at all," head coach Nick Nurse said on Monday. "Just, again, we are playing and testing and trying to figure it out and go from there."

Ad Placeholder

The 76ers haven't yet announced Embiid's status for Saturday's game against the Golden State Warriors. He has sat out the last two games after playing 31 minutes in a loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Feb. 22.

Embiid had surgery in February 2024 to repair a meniscus injury in his left knee. He suffered the injury when Jonathan Kuminga landed on his leg diving for a loose ball in a game against the Warriors on Jan. 30, 2024.

Injuries have limited Embiid to just 19 games this season. The 30-year-old is averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest.

Shams: 76ers' Joel Embiid Regularly Receives Injections to Play Through Knee Injury

Adam Wells
Feb 27, 2025
Philadelphia 76ers v Milwaukee Bucks

Joel Embiid's knee issues have gotten to the point where he's been receiving injections in an attempt to get on the court.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the Philadelphia 76ers star has received "regular and frequent" injections in his knee throughout this season.

This information comes at a point when Embiid's status for the rest of the season is very much uncertain.

Head coach Nick Nurse told reporters on Monday that Embiid would continue to undergo imaging to determine the extent of damage in his knee and figure out next steps.

Nurse said the Sixers were "not at that point at all" when asked if Embiid was going to be shut down for the season.

"Just, again, we are playing and testing and trying to figure it out and go from there," Nurse added.

Per Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer, doctors have suggested different "radical" procedures Embiid could undergo.

The recovery timeline for some of the procedures could range from six months to a year, with no guarantee that Embiid wouldn't have at least some future issues.

Embiid acknowledged earlier this month he might need knee surgery.

Ad Placeholder

"I think the straightforward answer is that when you've got something that's inconsistent, at some point, you've got to do something about it," Embiid said after a 135-127 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 9. "We don't know what it is. We're looking into every option."

Knee issues have been a problem for Embiid throughout his career, but particularly over the past 12 months when he suffered a meniscus injury that required surgery.

Ad Placeholder

Embiid returned late in the 2023-24 season and played all six games in the 76ers' first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks. He also won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the Paris Games last summer.

This season, though, Embiid has only played in 19 of Philadelphia's 58 games thus far. He's averaging his fewest points per game (23.8) since 2017-18 and has the worst field-goal percentage (44.4) of his career.

The Sixers have the fourth-worst record in the Eastern Conference (20-38). Their current nine-game losing streak is tied for the franchise's longest streak since the 2015-16 season when they finished 10-72.

76ers' Eric Gordon to Undergo Surgery on Right Wrist Injury

Scott Polacek
Feb 25, 2025
Miami Heat v Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers guard Eric Gordon has not played since Feb. 9, and his eventual return to the court will now be further delayed.

The 76ers revealed Tuesday that Gordon will undergo surgery on his right wrist Wednesday, per Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype noted the decision to undergo surgery came after the guard met with "several specialists," while Adam Aaronson of PhillyVoice reported there is no official timeline for return at the moment.

Gordon signed with the 76ers ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, and his time with the team has not gone according to plan thanks to his health concerns.

Ad Placeholder

He has appeared in 39 of the team's 57 games, as injuries have been a constant theme for the 76ers. That is more games than Joel Embiid (19), Paul George (38), Kyle Lowry (33), Andre Drummond (33) and Jared McCain (23), among others.

Those injuries have prevented Philadelphia from living up to expectations as an Eastern Conference contender, as it is in 12th place in the standings at 20-37 and 2.5 games behind the Chicago Bulls for the final spot in the play-in tournament.

Ad Placeholder

Gordon was a secondary contributor prior to the setback and averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 assists and 1.2 rebounds in his 39 games while shooting 42.6 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from deep.

That outside shooting figured to play well alongside Embiid and George given the additional defensive attention the two stars draw, but they have not been on the court enough to fully take advantage of the dynamic.

Ad Placeholder

The Indiana product has been something of a journeyman throughout his NBA career and has played for the Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans, Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns and 76ers. At his best, he was the Sixth Man of the Year in 2016-17 for the Rockets and someone who consistently scored in double figures.

He hasn't had a full chance to be that version of himself for the 76ers, and it is now up in the air whether he will return to the court this season.

Paul George Rips 76ers Amid Struggles: 'No Sign of a Team That Will Compete'

Doric Sam
Feb 25, 2025
Brooklyn Nets v Philadelphia 76ers

After the Philadelphia 76ers' losing streak extended to eight straight games with Monday night's 142-110 loss to the Chicago Bulls, star forward Paul George didn't hold back his opinion on the state of the team.

George told reporters that the Sixers have "shown no sign of a team that will compete" and he expressed doubt that they will be able to contend for a playoff spot, let alone a championship:

Philadelphia fell to 20-37 and sits in 12th place in the Eastern Conference. The team is 2.5 games out of the final spot in the play-in tournament, so a late push could be enough to earn a place in the postseason.

However, the uncertainty surrounding the status of star center Joel Embiid amid his lingering knee injury leaves the Sixers in a tough spot, as they are unable to keep up with elite teams without him in the lineup.

The Sixers' next opportunity to turn things around will be on Wednesday when they visit the New York Knicks (37-20).
