Paolo Banchero Responds to Greenberg, Doubts UConn or Any CBB Team Could Win NBA Game

ESPN's Mike Greenberg said on Monday's edition of Get Up! that he believes UConn's men's basketball team would make the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs.

Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero was asked about that take in an interview with Zion Olojede of Complex and politely disagreed with Greenberg's assessment.

"So he said UConn could make the playoffs in the East?" Banchero asked. "No, I don't think any college team could. I don't know if any college team would win a game in the NBA, honestly."

The 33-3 Huskies, the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, are coming off dominant wins to open their March Madness run courtesy of a 91-52 victory against Stetson and a 74-57 result versus Northwestern. The defending national champions have accomplished that feat despite losing last year's top two scorers in Adama Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins.

This isn't the first time that a sports commentator has posited whether a college basketball or football team could fare well against a pro side, and it won't be the last. This question was often raised in the 2010s when Alabama was dominating college football and whether it could beat whomever the worst NFL team was at the time.

The bottom line is that it would be incredibly difficult for college teams to compete with even the worst pro ones. Pro teams feature players who excelled on the college level and were often the best (or close to the best) on their teams. College teams feature numerous players who will never set foot on an NBA court.

Could UConn maybe steal a game right now from, say, the last-place 12-60 Detroit Pistons, who are depleted with injuries and playing very shorthanded? Perhaps.

But when healthy, this team also features plenty of good-to-great college basketball players who are excelling in the NBA, including Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren. If a healthy Detroit and UConn played 10 times, the guess here is the Pistons win nine or 10. Saying UConn would make the playoffs is far-fetched, as that would mean winning around 40 games, give or take, just to make the play-in.

As good as UConn is, the Huskies aren't historically dominant, nor do they feature a host of future NBA stars. But they are a great college team that could very well win back-to-back national championships. They'll continue that pursuit Thursday in a national championship rematch with San Diego State.

Donovan Clingan, UConn Dominate Northwestern, Impress March Madness Fans in Win

The defending NCAA tournament champions are back in the Sweet 16.

Top-seeded UConn dominated Sunday night in a 75-58 victory over No. 9 Northwestern in the second round of the 2024 NCAA tournament.

Donovan Clingan recorded a career-high eight blocks in UConn's win, while Tristen Newton led the Huskies with 20 points and 10 assists.

UConn won despite shooting 3-for-22 from behind the arc. That didn't matter when the Huskies were shooting 53.7 percent from the field.

https://twitter.com/mjhogan29/status/1772071835389067683

It took Clingan less than 16 minutes to record a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Clingan finished the outing with 14 points, 14 rebounds in addition to his eight blocks to prove why he's ranked No. 10 in Jonathan Wasserman's latest 2024 NBA Mock Draft for Bleacher Report.

UConn's stifling defense held Northwestern scoring leader Boo Buie to nine points on 2-for-15 shooting from the field.

After dominating in the first half, UConn's scoring rate decreased late in the second to allow Northwestern to claw their way within 20 points of the lead.

The Huskies' dominant victory, despite the late-game offensive slowdown and poor shooting rate on threes, led fans to predict another deep tournament run for the defending champions.

Sunday night marks the first time the Huskies have made it to consecutive Sweet 16 rounds since the team made three straight from 2002 to 2004.

UConn fans will now turn to watch the Round of 32 game between No. 13 Yale and No. 5 San Diego State, the winner of which will advance to face the Huskies.

Marquette's Tyler Kolek, Jones Star in Win vs. Colorado, Thrill March Madness Fans

Marquette held on to beat No. 10 Colorado 81-77 and advance to the Sweet 16 of the 2024 NCAA men's basketball tournament on Sunday.

This is the first time since 2013 the second-seeded Golden Eagles have punched a ticket to the regional semifinals.

Marquette led by as many as 12 points and was up eight at halftime. The Buffaloes continued to hang around in the second half and had multiple opportunities to jump ahead late.

Sophomore guard Chase Ross hit a pivotal long-range jumper to put the Golden Eagles up three and senior guard Tyler Kolek restored the advantage with a left-handed floater inside the final minute.

Kolek posted a game-high 21 points along with 11 assists for his eighth double-double of the season. Junior guard Kam Jones chipped in with 18 points and went 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Marquette's backcourt tandem drew a lot of praise on social media:

https://twitter.com/GottliebShow/status/1771960560449376469

The Buffaloes came up short despite the best efforts of junior guard KJ Simpson, who had 20 points, five rebounds and seven assists. He was the hero in the first round against Florida but couldn't replicate that magic when Colorado needed a bucket in the waning moments Sunday.

A date with No. 11 North Carolina State awaits Marquette in the next round. The Wolfpack ended Oakland's Cinderella bid in overtime on Saturday after having ousted sixth-seeded Texas Tech to open the tournament.

In terms of the draw, Marquette will have expected to get a slightly more difficult road after getting placed in the bottom half with No. 3 Kentucky. Especially after Sunday's scare, Shaka Smart's squad won't be looking past NC State.

The action tips off Friday at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Creighton's 2OT Win over Oregon Hyped as Best Game of March Madness by CBB Fans

Creighton and Oregon delivered arguably the best game of the NCAA tournament so far on Saturday night.

The No. 3 Bluejays held on in double overtime to beat the No. 11 Ducks 86-73 to advance to the Sweet 16 where they will face No. 2 Tennessee. The score was lopsided in the end, but the game was one of the best through the first two rounds of the tournament.

Creighton had four players in double figures, with Steven Ashworth leading the way with 21 points. Of Ashworth's 21 points, 10 came in overtime. Guard Trey Alexander had 21 points and big man Ryan Kalkbrenner added 19 points and 14 boards.

On Oregon's side, Jermaine Couisnard and N'Faly Dante put together huge games. Coisnard had 32 points and Dante had 28 points and 20 rebounds. Their efforts fell short as Creighton slipped away in overtime.

The double-overtime thriller had fans declaring Saturday night's Round of 32 matchup as the best game of the tournament so far.

Now, Creighton will head to its third Sweet 16 in the last four seasons. The Bluejays reached the Elite Eight and were one possession away from the Final Four a year ago, and last year's loss will certainly continue to be fuel for them.

Stephon Castle, No. 1 UConn Rout Stetson as CBB Fans Predict Back-to-Back NCAA Titles

It was business as usual in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament for the UConn Huskies.

The defending champions entered the tournament having won seven consecutive games, including the Big East Championship Game, and strolled into the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. That set up a date with No. 16 seed Stetson University and the Huskies did not take their foot off the gas pedal, exploding for a dominant 91-52 victory to advance to the second round.

The Huskies took a huge 52-19 lead at halftime and managed the big lead throughout the second half against the Hatters. This was the second-largest halftime lead in the NCAA Tournament in 20 years:

Despite earning the huge lead, head coach Dan Hurley still saw room for improvement from his Huskies.

Stephon Castle had 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 1-of-2 from three-point range while also adding five rebounds and four assists. Cam Spencer had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists, Donovan Clingan had 19 points with eight rebounds and four assists and Tristen Newton had 13 points, eight assists and three rebounds.

Fans took to social media to hype up the Huskies as repeat candidates.

The Huskies have passed the first test, but their next opponent showed some toughness in its first round matchup.

Connecticut will face Northwestern in the second round. The Wildcats took down Florida Atlantic, a team that reached the Final Four last season, 77-65 in overtime. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 games in Boston.

Big East 'Very Disappointed' Over Teams Left Out of 2024 NCAA Tournament Bracket

The Big East Conference has responded to its conference members' fate in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

A statement released on the conference's website congratulates the three members who did qualify for the postseason tournament and declares its respect for the governing body, but also expresses it's disappointment at several of its teams missing out on March Madness.

"We have great respect for the NCAA men's basketball committee and the time and effort that goes into selecting and seeding the teams for the NCAA tournament," the statement reads. "It is a very challenging job, and we have been advised that this year's upsets added to the complexity and contributed to the committee's final bracket selections. Given the high level of play in our league, we are understandably very disappointed that some worthy Big East teams were not selected to participate."

The conference went on to say it would be working with its members to best position itself for consideration in next year's tournament.

The three teams that qualified from the conference are UConn, Marquette and Creighton. UConn won the conference tournament, winning the championship over Marquette. Creighton fell in the quarterfinal but entered as the No. 2 seed.

UConn earned the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, Marquette earned a No. 2 seed and Creighton earned a No. 3 seed. The notable teams not qualifying for the tournament were St. Johns, Providence and Seton Hall, who had net rankings No. 32, No. 57 and No. 67 respectively.

The three qualifying teams is the lowest number the conference has had since the conference split in 2013. This comes despite all six teams winning at least 20 games in 2023-24 and Providence upsetting Creighton in the conference tournament.

The first round of the NCAA tournament starts Thursday.

Rick Pitino Talks Big East Snub After St. John's, Seton Hall Miss NCAA Tournament

Count St. John's head coach Rick Pitino among those who couldn't believe that the Big East only received three bids to the NCAA tournament, with the Red Storm joining Seton Hall and Providence as notable snubs.

"I believe in getting better not bitter. I totally believe that six teams from the Big East belonged in the field," he wrote on social media Monday. "I know our players, along with Providence, are totally disappointed with the decisions made. But not having Seton Hall at 13-7 in Big East play, with wins over the top teams, is flat out wrong!"

Pitino wasn't alone in his disbelief over the lack of Big East teams in the men's tournament outside of UConn, Marquette and Creighton. Bluejays head coach Greg McDermott was also shocked:

"Hard to believe," he said of the conference's snubs. "I certainly recognize that the committee's got a difficult job. And the events of the last couple of days, with upsets in conference tournaments, has almost made it unprecedented. But we're the second best league in the country and we have three teams in the top three seed lines, and a [Seton Hall team that went 13-7 in league play] isn't worthy to get in?"

Pundits on social media also decried the NCAA selection committee's perceived oversight:

Here were the respective résumés for the three snubs:

  • St. John's: 20-13 record, 11-9 in Big East play, 4-10 Quad 1 record.
  • Seton Hall: 20-12 record, 13-7 in Big East play, 5-8 Quad 1 record.
  • Providence: 21-13 record, 10-10 in Big East play, 6-9 Quad 1 record.

This was not a normal year, as chaos at the conference tournaments shrunk the list of available bids for teams on the bubble.

Saturday saw New Mexico go from being a bubble team to earning an automatic tournament berth by winning the Mountain West tournament. UAB won the American Athletic Conference tournament, giving the conference two tourney berths rather than the expected one (Florida Atlantic also got in). And both NC State (ACC) and Oregon (Pac-12) shocked the country by winning their respective conference tournaments, stealing two more bids. Neither team would have been in the field otherwise.

So the Big East schools and other snubs around the country—including Oklahoma, Indiana State and Pittsburgh—watched as the tournament field shriveled in front of them.

In most years, the Big East likely would have sent at least four teams, with Seton Hall among the selection committee's first four left out.

That's little solace for those schools, however. The Big East very well may end the season on top, as UConn looks poised to potentially win a second straight title, but the sting of only seeing three teams make it to the tournament remains.

Rick Pitino, St. John's Won't Participate in 2024 NIT After Missing NCAA Tournament

Rick Pitino and St. Johns will not be involved in the postseason collegiate basketball landscape.

Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic reported that the Red Storm had asked the NIT "not to invite them to the tournament," which comes on the heels of an NCAA Tournament snub.

Pitino discussed the snub immediately after the brackets were released:

St. John's went 20-13 in 2023-24 and lost to UConn in the semi-finals of the Big East tournament. This was Pitino's first season as the program's head coach.

St. John's last appeared in the NIT in 2014, when it fell to Robert Morris in the first round. The program has appeared in that postseason tournament 30 times in its history, winning it officially five times with a vacated tournament win in 2003.

The Red Storm last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2019, when it fell to Arizona State in the first four. The program has not advanced past the second round of the tournament in the 21st century.

St. John's had a net ranking of 32 on Selection Sunday. Per Ben Stevens of SportsGrid, the highest ranked team by that metric to be left out of the NCAA Tournament was 33rd. St. John's and Indiana State, which was ranked 29, both fell short of the tournament this season.

This means that it will be another postseason without a St. John's presence, but the progress on the year is still worth noting. It was the first 20-win season for the program since that 2018-19 season, and the team should remain a contender in the Big East going forward.

For the first time since 2011, the UConn men's basketball team is Big East Champions.

Marquette held its own for a significant portion of the matchup, but the Huskies had a dominant fourth quarter en route to a 73-57 victory

The Huskies held a 26-24 lead at halftime and Marquette even took a 33-32 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. However, the Huskies completely took over from this point, stalling the Golden Eagles offense and exploding for 47 second half points to earn the decisive victory.

The win improved UConn to 31-3 on the season and has it looking like an excellent candidate to repeat as national champions during this year's NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

UConn entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. Houston was ranked No. 1, but notably lost to Iowa State in the Big-12 tournament, so the victory for the Huskies could help it grab that coveted top seed.

Wherever it ends up in the bracket, UConn should be a popular pick to repeat, and it now goes into the tournament with some impressive hardware already on its resume.

Report: Chris Holtmann Hired as DePaul HC After Nearly 7 Seasons with Ohio State CBB

One month after his firing by Ohio State, men's basketball head coach Chris Holtmann is headed to DePaul.

Holtmann has agreed to a six-year deal to coach the Blue Demons, according to reports from The Athletic's Nicole Auerbach and ESPN's Jeff Borzello and Pete Thamel.

Ohio State fired Holtmann in February after the Buckeyes began the season with a 4-10 conference record.

Holtmann will replace Tony Stubblefield, who was fired in January after a 3-15 season start for DePaul.

After leading the Buckeyes to four NCAA Tournament appearances in his first six seasons, Holtmann will now attempt to bring DePaul back to the tournament for the first time since 2004.

Holtmann will become DePaul's fifth head coach since the program joined the Big East in 2005. Since then, the team has only twice recorded a regular-season record over .500.

The former Ohio State leader agreed to the position after being offered "a commitment from DePaul for a very competitive staff salary pool," according to Auerbach.

Holtmann's hiring comes after a historically bad season for DePaul.

The Blue Demons finished the campaign 3-28, marking the program's worst record since 1996-97.

That included an entirely winless slate (0-20) in Big East play and a 19-game losing streak to finish out the regular season, as well as 18 losses with double-digit deficits, per The DePaulia's Tom Gorski.

Holtmann began his head coaching career at Gardner-Webb in 2010, where he led for three seasons before heading to fellow Big East member Butler and then to Ohio State.

He found success early in his tenure with the Buckeyes, making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament twice before suffering an upset by No. 15 seed Oral Roberts in 2021.

The Buckeyes made it back to the NCAA Tournament only to lose in the second round in 2022, then missed the postseason altogether last season.

Holtmann finished his Ohio State tenure with a 137-86 overall record and an 11-17 record in conference and NCAA Tournament games, per Johnny Ginter for Eleven Warriors.

He received a buyout of $12.8 million for the early exit from his contract, which ran through 2027-28, according to Ohio State.

Under interim head coach Jake Diebler, Ohio State has since gone 6-1 and is headed to the Big Ten quarterfinals Friday against Illinois.
