Benfica vs. Fenerbahce: Score, Grades and Post-Match Reaction

May 2, 2013

Benfica has advanced to the 2013 Europa League final after a 3-1 win over Fenerbahce. The Portuguese side won the semifinal with an aggregate score of 3-2.

This was shaping up to be the much more intriguing Europa League semifinal. The Estadio da Luz is one of the few real cauldrons left in Europe. Benfica has only lost one match at home all season, to Barcelona in the Champions League. Despite Fenerbahce's one-goal lead, you knew Benfica had a great chance to make the final.

It didn't take long for Benfica to erase the deficit. In the ninth minute, Lima got some space on the right wing and delivered in a low cross to Nicolas Gaitan. The Argentine midfielder hit it beautifully with his right foot as the ball floated in off the left post. It was a wonderfully controlled finish.

Overall, in the early going, Benfica was able to go very much out on the attack. The opening goal obviously helped things along. The Portuguese side was able to impose its will on the match and clearly looked the stronger side.

Things unraveled a bit in the 22nd minute. Ezequiel Garay was judged to have handled the ball in the box. The replays showed that he had clearly touched the ball, but the Benfica players were arguing that it was ball-to-hand rather than hand-to-ball. Benfica's protests were all for naught as Dirk Kuyt stepped up and slotted the penalty kick into the bottom left corner.

Infostrada Sports has an interesting stat regarding Kuyt's performance in Europe this season:

That away goal was crucial as it meant Benfica needed to score at least three goals if it had any chance of advancing.

Fenerbahce began to drop back and protect its lead. That only allowed Benfica to continue getting on the attack and trying to overturn the 2-1 aggregate deficit.

Following the goal, and for much of the match, the official did little to help Benfica. There were at least three possible penalty opportunities, as Planet Benfica points out, and none were given:

Deciding it had enough of leaving it up to the official, Benfica just went ahead and scored. In the 35th minute, Oscar Cardozo found himself with space inside the 18-yard-box. As the most lethal finisher on the pitch, Cardozo had no problem striking a well-placed shot into the right side of the net.

It was an appalling bit of defense by Fenerbahce as it lost track of a player like Cardozo and gave him the space to score.

The match then fell into a lull as Benfica struggled to break down the Fenerbahce back four.

There was a scary moment in the 57th minute as Gokhan Gonul took a high boot from Gaitan. There was a long ball sent in near the goal line that Gonul tried to head clear, but Gaitan came flying in to try and keep the ball alive. He connected with Gonul's head, and the right-back fell motionless to the pitch. Players on both teams immediately called for the medical staff. Gonul was eventually carted off.

Eurosport.com was right on top of it after Gonul's injury and rightfully gave credit to the defender for not backing away from the challenge:

Almost 10 minutes later, the match was shot back into life. It was Cardozo again who found himself with space in the box to put Benfica up 3-1 in the match. This was a pivotal goal as it meant the club would be through to the final.

There wasn't much in the goal. It came off a throw-in, and Fenerbahce failed to clear it out. Eventually, Cardozo had the ball, and it was an easy finish.

After that, it continued to be all Benfica. Fenerbahce tried to throw as much forward as possible, but it simply didn't have the weapons to make its attacking movements count.

Benfica now has a chance to win its first European title since 1962. Following that title, manager Bela Guttmann supposedly cursed the club for the next 100 years upon his exit. The Portuguese side will have a great opportunity to break that curse when it meets Chelsea in the Europa League final on May 15.

Player Grades

Oscar Cardozo: A

Cardozo was simply sublime in front of goal. He finished off his best chances in the match, and that's exactly what you'd want from a striker like him.

OptaJoe noted only Radamel Falcao as a better goalscoring record in the Europa League:

Nicolas Gaitan: A-

The goal from Gaitan was a nice piece of class. He made what was a difficult finish look so easy. Gaitan was one of Benfica's best attackers going forward. He was constantly trying to set up his teammates to score.

The foul on Gonul was unfortunate, and there was no intent to injure. He fouled Gonul, but that was all there was to it.

Joseph Yobo: B-

Joseph Yobo was a rock at the back for much of the match. He and Egemen Korkmaz were the two biggest reasons why Fenerbahce was able to keep Benfica out of the box for as long as it did. It wasn't a matter of keeping the Portuguese side off the board but rather stopping a flood of goals.

Unfortunately, it was Yobo largely to blame for the Cardozo goal. He lost track of the striker and was badly out of position to try and make any play on the ball.

Dirk Kuyt: B+

Fenerbahce was missing a lot of key offensive players. You don't want to leave much of the attacking burden on a guy like Kuyt, but that's exactly what the Turkish club was forced to do.

Kuyt was his usual workman-like self. You always know what you're getting when it comes to a player like Kuyt. He did well to score the penalty to give Fenerbahce the aggregate advantage.

Viral Video of the Day: Chelsea Reject Rips Volleyed Goal for Fenerbahce

Mar 6, 2012
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWC1ER4Tx8U

Remember when Miroslav Stoch played for Chelsea? Me neither.

Here's something you probably won't soon forget: That's former Chelsea player Miroslav Stoch blasting a wicked volley into the net for Turkish club Fenerbahce last weekend against Genclerbirligi.

Stoch, as you may recall only if you're a diehard Chelsea supporter, was on the books with the Stamford Bridge club between 2006 and 2010. The Slovakian forward/winger appeared in just four league matches during that time and scored zero league goals.

Considering the mess Chelsea currently find themselves in, it's a decent bet they wish they had a goal scorer like Stoch around now.

Stoch, now 22, left Chelsea for FC Twente on loan in 2009, then moved permanently to Fenerbahce in 2010. At the international level, he's represented Slovakia 28 times, scoring four goals.

The video of Stoch's goal has already gained some traction online, with British newspaper Metro picking it up on Monday. Metro asked whether Chelsea would regret losing Stoch:

Ingenuity and freshness are just some of the traits currently missing at Stamford Bridge, and Stoch’s strike embodied both of these qualities in one swing of his right boot.

Will Chelsea rue they day they let this man go?

As for the game itself, Stoch scored another goal as Fenerbahce beat Genclerbirligi, 6-1. The victory pulled Fenerbahce within six points of league-leading Galatasaray.

Turkey's Top Team Bursaspor!

May 17, 2010

First time of their history Bursaspor won the Turkey's top league "Turkcell Super League" TITLE in the 2009-2010 season,

As I predicted about five weeks ago,the race went down to the wire....

Everything was suppose to go Fenerbahce's  way........

Because, they were on top of Bursaspor, going into last match of the season...

Fenerbahce scored the goal first against Trabzonspor while Bursaspor was still scoreless against Besiktas in Bursa....

Fenerbahce scored and their fans, started a little bit early to celebrate........

Than, the team who knock Fenerbahce in the Turkish Cup Finals, Trabzonspor shocked the Fenerbahce fans with a goal....

On the other hand Bursaspor was a head of Besiktas with two goals...

As the time approached the last minute of the match , Besiktas scored goal and made it 2-1.

That gave a little hope for Fenerbahce fans in the Sukru Saracoglu stadium...

But, Fenerbahce players just could not get the second goal.....

Guzia and Alex missed very god chances for Fenerbahce...

SCANDAL IN THE KADIKOY FENERBAHCE STADIUM....

While the match was in the last minute of the match, The stadium announcer made a absurd announcement saying Bursaspor Besiktas match score was 2-2 draw....

Fenerbahce fans started to celebrate while there was still minute left in the match.and started to run on the field while Bursaspor match was over...

In Bursa. the match finished and they were waiting eagerly the good news from Fenerbahce stadium.

What is so bad,is, the broadcaster, LIG TV play by play announcers fell for this trap and gave a wrong information to the viewers..............

Soon after the fans started to run on to pitch , the game was over....

And, The celebration in Kadikoy turn in to sour grape, while the real champions of Turkey, Bursaspor and fans started the celebration will take place 40 days and 40 nights...

This was the second time other than big three Istanbul Teams won the league's title..

Trabzonspor was the first Anatolian team won the leagues title out side of Istanbul teams...

That Trabzonspor, who is coached by former Turkish National team coach Senol Gunes, stopped Fenerbahce in the league, after beating them in the Turkish Cup...

Trabzonspor also helped Bursaspor by at least holding Fenerbahce to 1-1 score in the last latch.....

Lastly, I am sure a lot of the soccer fans out side of Turkey , probably asking where this Bursa came from all of sudden?

Well, first, they have made a good choice buy hiring young Turkish coach who know the Turkish football players....

Second, fans ,coach and the team was on the same page.......

Ertugrul Saglam was big factor in this Championship ....

Kudos to Ertugrul Saglam and Bursaspor...

Well deserved run....you guys deserve it..

Now, it is time to think big for Champions League!

Don't be like Sivaspor!

WHO WILL FINISH FIRST IN TURKEY?

May 3, 2010

The teams on top of the Turkish Turkcell super league, all won their matches in the 32th week.

Fenerbahce still leads the pack on top with 70 points...

Fenerbahce beat Eskisehirspor with clear 2-0 score and after the match Fenerbahce coach Cristoph Daum said "we played a very good first half, scored two goals and kept our opponent under pressure in the second half”

He went on to say “my players have been under a lot of stress in recent weeks, but it seems like the pressure has made them stronger.”

He also said the tile challenge will be carried to the last game. “But I believe that Fenerbahce will come out on top”

Bursaspor already secured the second place and the Champions League for the next season with a win against Kayserispor.

Bursaspor is one point behind Fenerbahce and they will earn three points without playing in the 33th week.

Even though Galatasaray won their match, there is no way they could catch Bursaspor, after this weekend..

Galatasaray finished 32th week, in third place with Milan Baros goal in their 1-0 win at Istanbul BB.

Galatasaray will play in the Europa League next season.

The pressure will be on once again on Fenerbahce in the 33th week.

Fenerbahce also will play Turkish Cup final match against Trabzonspor this coming Wednesday, before the clash with Ankaragucu in Ankara!

This week could be really crucial week for Turkish top team Fenerbahce....

A draw or a loss against Ankaragucu , could make Bursaspor the top team at the end of 33th week.

That is why this has to be the most important week in the Turkish Super League..

If Fenerbahce lose point and points this coming weekend, we could see two final matches in the last weekend of the season.

Fenerbahce will be home against Trabzon and Bursaspor will host Besiktas in Bursa..

What a weekend would that be if this goes to down to the wire....

On the other hand Besiktas clinch European berth with a win against Diyarbakirspor in Diyarbakir.

With this loss, Diyarbakirspor have a slim chances to remain in the league.

Fenerbahce made it eight in a row out of nine matches...

Can they do it nine in a row out of ten matches?.

Well, If they do that, they will be really close to the finish line......

Get ready for down to wire race, on top of the Turkey's top league.

AHMET TURGUT

"IT IS NOT OVER UNTIL IT'S OVER" IN TURKEY!

May 1, 2010

SUPER DUPER SATURDAY.....

If you remember, I have told you guys that we probably wont find out soon, who will be the Champion in the Turkey's top league.

Three weeks to go, still ,we don't know who will finish first, just yet.....

But, Saturday results, might just give us a better picture, on top of the Turkish Turkcell Super League.

Action filled Saturday ,will keep Turkish soccer fans in front of their tv's trying to watch, all three matches at the same time..(20.00 Local Turkey Time)

Turkey's top team Fenerbahce, will host one of the strong Anatolian team Eskisehirspor in Kadikoy on the other hand, leagues second place team Bursaspor, will face Kayserispor at Bursa. Bursaspor coach Ertugrul Saglam, will take on his former team Kayserispor.

It will be very interesting, how well Kayserispor will play against Bursaspor.

The third place team Galatasaray, who loss their hopes for the title last week , still, has a chance to capture the second place, if they win their three remaining matches and hope Bursaspor lose their two remaining matches.

Galatasaray will face Istanbul B.B., in Ataturk stadium on Saturday night also.

"Saturday night fever" will be really high in the Turkish Super league,,,,,

Fenerbahce and Burssaspor has to win their matches if they want to remain in their places...

A loss or loss of points will spell danger for both teams...

If Galatasaray win their match on Saturday night..........

During the past week,Bursaspor coach Ertugrul Saglam said this..."Our opponent will play three more games, while we will play two,”. Bursaspor will receive an automatic victory against Ankaraspor next week.

He also said,"We will win our two games and keep our fingers crossed for Fenerbahce to drop points,” said Bursaspor coach. “If we become the champions, we will celebrate it with our fans, but if we can’t – God forbid – we will honestly congratulate our opponent."

On the other hand, Fenerbahce has won seven of the eight games it has played....

Fenerbahce who has 67 points will face very difficult team Eskisehirspor...

Could Fener make it eight out of nine?

It will not be easy..... but their home turf and their rowdy 12th man, will be a plus for Fenerbahce on Saturday.

After this weekend, Fenerbahce still have a bumpy road to the finish..........

Next weekend they will travel to Ankara, to play Ankaragucu, who is "sister team" with Bursaspor, than in the last weekend, they will face Trabzonspor in Istanbul .

Plus, they will play in the Turkish Cup Final ,against Trabzonspor on May 5th, in Urfa ,Turkey.

So, it is very tricky schedule coming up for Fenerbahce, in the coming days...

They have to be focused to the finish or else will happened....

As long as they win their games ,Bursaspor could  not catch Fenerbahce....

But, they have to be perfect in the next three, weekends...

Again, at this moment, I still can't say, who will win the title in the Turkish Turkcell Super League , just yet......

Also on Saturday,Ankaragücü will hosts Trabzonspor in the afternoon.

RELEGATION SUNDAY............

Sunday will be to be or not to be for Diyarbakirspor team...

If they lose to Besiktas at home , they will be the third team who will bite the dust in the Turkish Turkcell Super league.

Denizlispor and Ankarspor allready said good -bye........

Alsoon Sunday,Gaziantepspor will face Antalyaspor in Antalya, already-relegated Denizlispor will host Genclerbirligi, and Kasımpasaspor will visit Sivasspor.

The bottom of the Turkish Super League is pretty much shaped up...

But, the top, is boiling .........

THE HEAT OF THE "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" WILL BE FELT IN THE THREE DIFFERENT STADIUM IN TURKEY ON SATURDAY NIGHT....

Exclusive Interview with Stephen Appiah

Jan 1, 2010

Stephian Appiah was one time, most favorite player for Fenerbahce fans and   still for some.....

But,  what ever happened, happened. Appiah is now with Italian team Bologna ...

He has not played for them yet but he is training with the team and he said he is fit to go.

My good friend Ziyad Perlomental from (www.superlignews.com) set down with Appiah and did  exclusive interview with him...

HERE IS THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW WITH APPIAH......

Q:

You were injured for a long time and missed nearly 2 seasons of play, and it has been known that Fenerbahce doctors didn't diagnose your injury in the right way, do you blame Fenerbahce for your long term injury?

Stephen Appiah: As you are aware this case is still being heard by the CAS (FIFA) and so I cannot comment on it in any shape or form. I am fit now and training to start my first Bologna game

Q: The 2010 World Cup is on the doors and Ghana have been drawn with strong teams, will you be playing at the World Cup?
Stephen Appiah: I hope so. I am just like any of the other players and I will go to the World Cup if I am selected. Its down to the coaching team. We are in a very strong group. I think aside Brazil's group this is one of the strongest. We have to work hard as a team, defend very well and take our chances when we get them. If we do that i am sure we can make the next round

Q: Now at Ghana there are many good and talented players, if a Ghanaian player received an offer from a Turkish team would you advice him to go to Turkey or do you think it will be better if that player goes to another European country?
Stephen Appiah: I will always advise players to do what is best for them and their careers and if that means going to Turkey then why not. I had some of my best years in Turkey and I love the people and place so much that it wont be a problem recommending it to any other player.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is (total £21.61, down £3.39)

Aug 25, 2009

Last weekend, while still not as successful as we would have hoped, saw us maintain our position as slightly out of pocket after we were let down by two awful performances from teams that should know how to pay better.

Both Liverpool and Inter Milan’s inability to chalk up victories hurt us in the pocket, while on the flip-side our tips on Leeds and a Turkish double proved spot on.

Onwards and upwards.

All you need to do to claim your FREE £25 BETS is to click on this link and make the minimum deposit. William Hill will then top up your account and you’ll be ready to make some serious money.

The first bet we’re laying down this week relates to the Champions League return legs on Wednesday night, and in particular Arsenal’s match with Celtic and Stuttgart’s fixture with Romanian minnows Poli Timisoara.

Both the Gunners and Stuttgart approach their matches in a similar head-space, both sides leading 2-nil from away wins in their respective first leg. This leaves an obvious fear from a betting standpoint, being that both teams know that a draw will be sufficient to confirm progression to the Champions League group phase. Yet with that said, both home teams look in decent form at this early stage of the season and pressure will remain on these teams to perform in front of their home crowds.

Backing both Arsenal (1/3) and Stuttgart (2/7) to win, we aim to turn a £5 bet into a £8.57 return.

Also on Wednesday night is Carling Cup action in England, with Premier League table-toppers Spurs heading to unfashionable Doncaster, while high-flying Championship side Newcastle play host to Huddersfield.

Both the Lilywhites and Magpies have started the season at a much-higher tempo than many expected, both teams being spearheaded by strikers in form. For Spurs, Jermaine Defoe looks like scoring every time he touches the ball. While on Tyneside Shola Ameobi appears to have found his level in English football’s second top division in the opening weeks of the new year.

Hoping that both strikers will continue their form in the cup, we are staking £1.5 that both Defoe (10/11) and Ameobi (4/5) score in 90 minutes. A winning ticket will produce a £5.15 return.

The hotchpotch of the Europa League swings back to life on Thursday night as the most over-bloated competition in world football prepares to cut its current participants by half.

In amongst the almost endless list of fixtures are several seemingly cast-iron home bankers. Included in those are Fenerbahce’s meeting with Sion, Hamburg’s hosting of Guingamp and PSV’s match with Bnei Yehuda.

Staking £3 on Fenerbahce (1/5), Hamburg (1/6) and PSV (1/5) to all win, a winning ticket will produce a £5.04 return.
