Jimmy Butler Says Warriors Will 'Win Together' in NBA Playoffs Game 7 vs. Rockets

Dallas Mavericks v Golden State Warriors

After missing another chance to close out their first-round series against the Houston Rockets, Jimmy Butler remains confident the Golden State Warriors will prevail in Game 7 on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters following the Warriors' 115-107 loss in Game 6, Butler said the Warriors will "win together" because they are ready for the challenge that lies ahead:

"So we're going to win together, we're going to lose together. I know we're definitely going to win together come Sunday. We're good. We're smiling. We're listening to our music, celebrating life. We're ready to compete. We were ready to compete tonight. Things didn't go our way. OK, we're going to be ready to compete on Sunday. We're going to make the game go our way."

Coming off a 15-point loss in Game 5 at the Toyota Center, the Warriors looked to be in good shape on Friday night playing at home with a chance to end the series.

Things did not go as planned, as the Rockets led virtually the entire way. They went on a 14-1 run midway through the fourth quarter to turn a four point lead into a 106-89 score.

Golden State's defense, which had been the key to its turnaround after acquiring Butler, has really struggled. The Rockets are shooting 50.0 percent in the last two games, 25-of-60 from three-point range.

Stephen Curry's efficiency has dipped as he deals with a thumb injury. The two-time MVP is shooting 39.6 percent from the field in the last three games. He made 52.6 percent of his attempts in the first three games (45.2 percent from three).

This is not an unfamiliar spot for the Warriors to be in. They were on the losing end of arguably the most famous 3-1 lead in NBA history against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 Finals.

A loss on Sunday will make the Warriors the first team since the 2020 Los Angeles Clippers to blow a 3-1 series lead.

Golden State and Houston will play Game 7 on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Warriors' Steve Kerr Explains Decision to Rest Starters, Discussed with Draymond at HT

Houston Rockets v Golden State Warriors - Game Four

The Golden State Warriors faced a 27-point deficit heading into the second half of Game 5 against the Houston Rockets, and Steve Kerr ultimately decided to waive the white flag early in the third quarter.

After the loss, Kerr explained that he and veteran Draymond Green made the decision at halftime to pull the Warriors' starters if they were unable to cut into the deficit quickly.

"I wasn't going to chase this game, obviously, with Game 6 coming up in 48 hours," Kerr told reporters. "Talked to Draymond, said 'what do you think?' He said, 'five minutes.' So, we gave the starting group the first five or six minutes. Unless we made a huge run, we kind of had in mind that we would pull the plug."

The Rockets dominated the first half and held a commanding 76-49 lead heading into the third quarter. Kerr allowed his starters to try to make a run, but they could do little against Houston's stout defense, and Golden State made a business decision to start resting for Game 6.

Ime Udoka quickly followed Kerr's lead and pulled his starters. Once the Rockets' starters came out, the Warriors' bench ended up putting together a nice run behind Moses Moody's 22 points, Kevin Knox II's 14 and Pat Spencer's 11.

Golden State's reserves managed to cut the lead down to as few as 13 points about halfway through the fourth quarter. That spurred Udoka to bring back some of his starters, but Kerr never brought Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and the starting five back into the game.

After the Warriors' late run, the Rockets managed to pull away and hang on for a 131-116 win.

The bad news for Golden State is that it couldn't close out the series and get some additional rest before the second round. The good news is that the Warriors' starters should be fresh for a pivotal Game 6 at home on Friday.

Kerr will need much more than his starters gave him on Wednesday. Curry was the only starter in double figures, posting just 13 points. Butler had eight and Green had seven as Golden State shot 41.7 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from deep.

Draymond Green Says Jimmy Butler 'Couldn't Move' Until 4Q Due to Injury vs. Rockets

2025 NBA Playoffs - Houston Rockets v Golden State Warriors

If you have ever wondered how long it takes for your body to loosen up from a pelvic and deep gluteal muscle contusion in an NBA playoff game, the answer is three quarters if you are Jimmy Butler.

After Butler erupted for 14 points in the fourth quarter of the Golden State Warriors' 109-106 win over the Houston Rockets in Game 4 on Monday, Draymond Green told reporters the six-time All-Star "couldn't move" for the first three quarters:

"He played through the injury. Was beautiful. But what his presence does for this team is humongous. The first three quarters, he couldn't move. Not sure how he started moving in the fourth quarter, but he never complained. He stuck with it.

"I think what was most important, when the time was right, everybody on our side looked to get him the ball. When you get him the ball, he made great things happen for himself or for others. It was huge. I think my favorite play was the last rebound. I looked up, I thought it was [young and athletic Jonathan] Kuminga out there flying. It was Jimmy."

Butler sat out Saturday's game taking a hard fall in the first quarter of Houston's 109-94 Game 2 win.

Head coach Steve Kerr told reporters prior to tipoff on Monday that the 35-year-old wouldn't have a minutes restriction, but his playing time would depend on how his body was feeling.

Butler seemed to be battling through the injury in the first half when he scored just four points on three shot attempts in 18 minutes and the Warriors trailed 57-50 at the intermission.

The third quarter saw him come alive with nine points to enter the final period with a two-point lead. He played all 12 minutes in the fourth quarter, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and scoring 14 of Golden State's 27 points.

Butler has been everything the Warriors hoped for in the playoffs when they acquired him from the Miami Heat at the trade deadline. He has scored at least 25 points in each of his last three full games dating back to the play-in tournament win over the Memphis Grizzlies, not counting the game when he suffered the injury and only played eight minutes.

Monday's victory has Golden State on the verge of clinching its first playoff series win in two years. The Warriors will look to close things out at Toyota Center in Game 5 on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Warriors' Stephen Curry Wins 2024-25 NBA Teammate of the Year Award

Houston Rockets v Golden State Warriors - Game Three

The NBA announced Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry was named the Teammate of the Year for the 2024-25 season.

This is the first time he has received the award, and he's the first member of the Warriors to earn the distinction, which dates back to 2012-13.

Executives around the NBA narrow the list of contenders for Teammate of the Year to 12 finalists. The winner is then based on a poll of players. Curry had 20 more first-place votes than runner-up Steven Adams, but the Houston Rockets big finished only 20 total points behind.

Curry continues to perform well on the court despite turning 37 in March and being midway through his 16th year in the league. He averaged 24.5 points on 44.8 percent shooting, including 39.7 percent from beyond the arc.

The two-time MVP also remains the linchpin for Golden State as it tries to win one more championship while balancing the development of younger contributors such as Brandin Podziemski, Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody.

"You automatically respect the guys who are the best players in the league. Automatic," head coach Steve Kerr said to The Athletic. "And Steph is one of the best players of all time. So he already has the respect and then he goes into the locker room and there's this authentic humility and compassion for his teammates. That's so rare. I think that's the key to his leadership. This amazing combination of those two traits."

Jimmy Butler Reportedly Could Return From Glute Injury for Warriors vs. Rockets Game 4

Golden State Warriors v Houston Rockets - Game Two

The Golden State Warriors were without Jimmy Butler for Saturday's 104-93 Game 3 win over the Houston Rockets due to a glute injury, but it appears he could return for a pivotal Game 4.

Butler worked out for the Warriors before Saturday's game and "there's a belief" he'll be back for Monday's Game 4, per The Athletic's Anthony Slater.

ESPN's Shams Charania provided more information on Butler's injury during an appearance on ESPN's NBA Countdown prior to Game 3:

The team initially listed Butler as questionable for Saturday's matchup due to a pelvis and deep gluteal muscle contusion he suffered in the first quarter of Wednesday's 109-94 loss to the Rockets.

Charania previously reported that Butler was in "serious jeopardy" of missing Game 3.

Butler averaged 17.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds in 30 regular season games for the Warriors after coming over in a deadline trade from the Miami Heat. He scored 25 points in Golden State's Game 1 victory and had chipped in three points before exiting Wednesday's matchup.

Getting Butler back for Game 4 would be a huge boost for the Warriors as they aim to take a 3-1 series lead at home before the series shifts back to Houston for Game 5.

Warriors' Draymond Green Wins 2024-25 NBA Hustle Award over Cason Wallace

San Antonio Spurs v Golden State Warriors

Even though he missed out on winning Defensive Player of the Year, Draymond Green won't come away from the 2024-25 season without an individual honor after being named the NBA Hustle Award winner.

In the voting results released by the NBA on Friday, the Golden State Warriors forward finished ahead of Cason Wallace of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Guerschon Yabusele of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Wallace's teammate, Luguentz Dort, and Dyson Daniels of the Atlanta Hawks rounded out the top five.

The NBA says it gives out the Hustle Award to those "who make the effort plays that don’t often appear in the traditional box score but impact winning on a nightly basis."

Specific stats used to determine the winner include deflections, loose balls recovered, charges drawn, screen assists, contested shots and box-outs.

On a per-minute basis among 143 qualified players, Green ranked in the top 10 in contested three-point shots (.1225), charges drawn (0.0071) and defensive box-outs (0.0479). He was also 13th in contested two-point shots (0.1881) and 15th in deflections (0.0898).

Per Brian Martin of NBA.com, Green is the first winner of the Hustle Award who ranked in the top 40 in all nine categories the league uses to determine the recipient.

The Hustle Award has been given out annually since the 2016-17 season. Marcus Smart has been a dominant force with three wins in nine years, including back-to-back victories in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Smart is also the only player who has won the Hustle Award and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season (2021-22).

Green was among the three finalists for Defensive Player of the Year this season, along with Daniels and Evan Mobley. Mobley was revealed as the winner on Thursday, with Green finishing third.

This marks the first individual award Green has won since being named Defensive Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season. He helped the Warriors win 48 games during the regular season and make the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference.

Jimmy Butler's Agent Gives Cryptic Update on Warriors Star's Injury Ahead of Game 3

Golden State Warriors v Houston Rockets - Game One

The agent for Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler remained vague when addressing his client's status for Game 3 against the Houston Rockets.

Andscape's Marc J. Spears relayed a text message from Bernie Lee saying, "Pray for the bear" in reference to his client:

"Pray for the bear" is something Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant said in 2013 after tearing his Achilles. That was his way of signaling his determination to recover from the injury and return to an NBA court.

Butler's prognosis isn't anywhere near as serious, but the scary fall he had in Golden State's 109-94 loss had a lot of fans concerned. The six-time All-Star went up for a rebound in the first quarter when he was inadvertently undercut by Rockets forward Amen Thompson.

Golden State said Butler suffered a pelvic contusion. He didn't return to the game, and head coach Steve Kerr was unable to provide any additional insight after the game.

"Jimmy always says he's gonna be fine, but we have to wait and see with the MRI," he told reporters.

Kerr was candid when discussing Butler's potential absence moving forward, saying the Warriors would "have to rethink everything" in that situation:

Ad Placeholder

By the numbers, Butler hasn't been much different in Golden State than he was with the Miami Heat to open the year. He averaged 17.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 30 appearances with the Warriors, and he shot just 27.9 percent from beyond the arc.

But there's no question the 35-year-old provided a lift after the trade deadline. His value was also evident in the Warriors' 95-85 Game 1 win, when he finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. The team was plus-14 with him on the court.

As the No. 7 seed, Golden State has a difficult enough path in the Western Conference half of the bracket. Losing Butler even for a game or two would be a massive setback.
