It took Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty just 11 games to surpass 2,000 rushing yards this season.

Jeanty continued improving his case for the 2024 Heisman Trophy by opening the scoring for Boise State on Saturday night with a 61-yard touchdown against Wyoming.

The score marked Jeanty's 27th rushing touchdown of the season. Later in the game he became the first running back since 2019 to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a single campaign.

Jeanty's availability was in question when he visited the medical tent and missed two drives following a tackle in the third quarter.

The Broncos struggled to drive down the field with Jeanty watching from the sideline.

Jeanty then returned for the second-to-last Broncos drive of the game and immediately transformed the look of the Boise State offense.

He made four carries for a total of 53 yards to help the Broncos drive within range of a Jambres Dubar touchdown.

Jeanty finished the outing with 20 carries for 169 yards and a touchdown.

He had entered the contest already leading the FBS with 256 carries for 1,893 yards and 26 touchdowns through the first 10 games of the season.

Jeanty is competing with Travis Hunter, who has established himself as a two-way star this season at Colorado, to become the first position player to win the Heisman since 2020.

Through 11 games with Colorado, Hunter has made 74 catches for 911 yards and nine touchdowns at receiver. On the other side of the ball he has recorded 23 total tackles, eight passes defensed and three interceptions as cornerback.

Jeanty's performance in the Boise State win re-ignited the debate as to whether he or Hunter could be named the best player in college football at the end of the season.

Jeanty's availability will be key to the Broncos' Mountain West championship and College Football Playoff hopes as the team gears up to end the season next Friday with a home game against Oregon State. Thanks in large part to Jeanty's efforts on Saturday night, Boise State will remain on track for a potential first-round bye in the CFP.

BSU's Ashton Jeanty: 'No Matter What the Defense Does, I'm Gonna Do What I Do'

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is determined to lead his team to the College Football Playoff even if the Broncos' defense struggles.

"No matter what it is, no matter what the defense does, I'm gonna do what I do," Jeanty said after Sunday's 42-21 win at San Jose State. "Work hard, earn every single yard that I can."

Jeanty ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 13 Boise State to an eighth straight win.

The effort marked the sixth time Jeanty recorded at least three touchdowns in a game this season. The Heisman Trophy candidate now has now recorded 1,893 rushing yards and 26 rushing touchdowns in 10 games.

The Broncos were forced to mount a comeback after falling behind early when San Jose State surged out to a 14-0 lead by the opening minute of the second quarter.

Boise State responded by holding the Spartans to seven points while scoring 42 in the final three quarters of the game.

The Broncos were still overall outgained, 483 yards to 456 yards, while allowing a season-high 446 passing yards from San Jose State offense. The victory marked the fourth time this season the Boise State pass defense, which was ranked 110th in the FBS heading into this weekend, has allowed an opponent to gain at least 300 yards through the air.

Those defensive issues haven't stopped Boise State (9-1, 6-0 in-conference) from remaining on track to potentially earn a College Football Playoff spot with a Mountain West championship game win in large part thanks to the Broncos offense, which has scored at least 28 points in 10 straight games.

The Broncos will now lean on Jeanty and their run game as the team looks to win out against Wyoming and Oregon State.

Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty kept his Heisman hopes alive on Saturday, helping lead the team to a 41-21 victory over the San Jose State Spartans.

Despite a quieter game compared to the rest of his season, Jeanty helped the No. 13-ranked Broncos improve to an impressive 9-1 record. After a slow start, recording just 63 yards midway through the third quarter, he erupted in the fourth quarter to secure Boise State's comeback victory.

Jeanty finished with 32 carries for 159 yards and three touchdowns in Boise State's victory. Quarterback Maddux Madsen stepped up as well, completing 22-of-30 passes for 286 yards and one touchdown.

The Broncos' win was crucial for keeping their playoff hopes alive, but they will likely need to win their final two games to secure a spot, currently sitting in the 12th and final seed in the latest playoff bracket.

Last weekend, Jeanty moved into second place on the FBS all-time rushing yards in a single season list, trailing only the legendary Barry Sanders who recorded 2,628 yards with 27 touchdowns during the Oklahoma State Cowboys 1988 season.

Following Saturday evening's game, Jeanty has amassed 1,893 total yards and 26 touchdowns this season, containing the top spot in the NCAA for both total yards and touchdowns.

Heisman Trophy discussions have largely become a two-way battle between Jeanty and Colorado Buffaloes' Travis Hunter, with Jeanty's comeback performance in the fourth quarter boosting his standing among fans on social media.

Next Saturday, the Broncos will look to extend their win-streak as they face the 2-8 Wyoming Cowboys on the road.

Following the No. 12-ranked Boise State Broncos' 28-21 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday night, fans praised the 8-1 Broncos and Heisman-hopeful running back Ashton Jeanty as they secured their seventh consecutive win.

After being tied 14-14 at halftime, Boise State came out strong in the second half, scoring 14 unanswered points to secure the win.

Broncos quarterback Maddux Madsen completed 9 of 20 passes for 199 yards, with one interception and one touchdown. Jeanty heavily contributed with 34 carries for 209 yards and three touchdowns.

Jeanty has recorded 1,525 total yards this season on 190 carries with 20 touchdowns, securing the top spot in the NCAA for both total rushing yards and touchdowns.

After his standout performance on Saturday, Jeanty moved into second place on the FBS all-time list for most rushing yards, trailing only the legendary Barry Sanders, who recorded 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns in 1988 for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, according to ESPN.

Boise State fans took to social media to praise the junior running back, calling him the unofficial Heisman winner after his impressive performance in Saturday's victory.

Ashton Jeanty Hyped By CFB Fans as Boise State Wins vs. SDSU amid Heisman Trophy Race

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty's Heisman campaign continued Friday with 180 total yards and two rushing touchdowns in a 56-24 home win over San Diego State.

Jeanty rushed for 149 yards on 31 carries while adding 31 more yards on two catches.

He got off to a slow first half start (15 carries, 37 yards) as San Diego State stacked the box against him. That decision left the Aztecs vulnerable on the back end, and Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen took advantage with 307 passing yards and four scores (three to Latrell Caples).

Fans pointed out SDSU's decision.

Jeanty got rolling in the second half, scoring both of his touchdowns and running for 112 yards. Both came from four yards out, and he didn't have to break much of a sweat for either of them.

Through eight games, Jeanty has rushed for 1,525 yards and 20 touchdowns on 190 carries (8.0 YPC). He's also caught 14 passes for 81 yards and an additional score.

And so the Jeanty Heisman hype continues after another fantastic game.

The first half may not have featured gaudy numbers, but it's quite difficult for any running back to run through a brick wall. He still posted an 180-yard, two-touchdown game for the nation's No. 15 team, which is squarely in the College Football Playoff mix.

And at this rate, Jeanty can book a flight to New York in December as a Heisman finalist.

This year's race looks great on paper, with Colorado two-way superstar Travis Hunter, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon signal-caller Dillon Gabriel all in the mix as well, but Jeanty isn't going anywhere.

https://twitter.com/WillFavored/status/1852541482265190802

Jeanty and the 7-1 Broncos (4-0 in Mountain West) now have four regular-season games remaining, beginning Saturday at home against Nevada.

Ashton Jeanty Responds to Travis Hunter's Viral Comments About Heisman Race in Video

Oct 21, 2024

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty responded to comments from Colorado two-way standout Travis Hunter regarding his Heisman Trophy candidacy.

"Kudos to Travis, he's balling for real," Jeanty told YouTuber Deestroying in a video posted on his channel (h/t On3.com). "He's doing some stuff we ain't ever seen nobody do. Personally, I don't take no offense to it. He's just speaking his opinion, everybody's got an opinion."

"For me, what I've been doing hasn't been done in 36, 37 years, so that's something special," Jeanty added. "If I keep that up and break a record that's been around for 36 years, I feel like you can't really compete with that."

Hunter previously discussed his belief that playing on both sides of the ball gives him an edge over Jeanty, saying that "it's not like we haven't seen a running back that's good" during an appearance on the Outta Pocket with RGIII podcast.

Boise State is in the midst of a 5-1 season due to Jeanty's heroics on the ground. The Broncos are ranked No. 17 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The 20-year-old has been nearly unstoppable for the Broncos, rushing for 1,248 yards and recording 18 total touchdowns during his first six appearances of the season. Jeanty has showcased his ability to elude defenders and also fight through contact, averaging an impressive 9.9 yards per carry.

He's on pace to challenge for the all-time single-season rushing record in college football, which is currently held by legendary running back Barry Sanders. Sanders ran for 2,628 yards at Oklahoma State in 1988, which resulted in a Heisman Trophy victory.

As for Hunter, he's also in the midst of a strong season with the Buffaloes. The 21-year-old has thrived at both wide receiver and cornerback, hauling in 51 receptions for 604 yards and six touchdowns.

He's also racked up 19 tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

He wouldn't be the first player to win the Heisman while playing on both sides of the ball. Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Charles Woodson hoisted the trophy in 1997 after playing wide receiver and returning punts in addition to his defensive work with Michigan.

Hunter has been slowed down by a shoulder injury in recent weeks, which forced him to exit in the second half of Colorado's 34-7 win over Arizona on Saturday. The Buffaloes have still been able to maintain a record of 5-2, already surpassing their 2023 win total.

Both players should remain firmly in the Heisman conversation if they're able to remain healthy for the rest of the year, although Jeanty should have the edge if he can break Sanders' record.

Ashton Jeanty 'an Absolute War Daddy' amid 2024 Heisman Race, Says Boise State HC

Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson reached deep into college football vernacular to describe star running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty.

Danielson called the junior "an absolute war daddy" after he ran for 217 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries in the Broncos' 28-7 win over Hawai'i.

"He's the best player in the country," the coach said. "Those were tough yards. They're the number one ranked defense in our conference for a reason. Those guys flew around, they had a great plan of attack and he just kept battling, kept battling."

For those unfamiliar with the "war daddy" moniker, Slate's Josh Levin provided a helpful explainer in 2005 and said there wasn't one universal definition for the distinction.

"Recruiting experts, fans, and coaches all agree that they don't come along too often," Levin wrote. "When a war daddy does arrive, he must combine elite ability with extraordinary toughness. Many picture a dominant, run-stuffing defensive tackle. But while most war daddies do play defense, they are in rare circumstances seen on the offensive side of the ball."

Jeanty certainly seems worthy of the superlative.

The 5'9", 215-pound back has run for an FBS-high 1,248 yards and 17 touchdowns. He's nearly averaging a first down (9.9 yards) every time he carries the ball.

Boise State will play 14 games this year if it qualifies for the Mountain West title game. With 208 rushing yards per contest, Jeanty is on pace to break Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record (2,628 yards), and he'd surpass that total even if he sat out the Broncos' bowl game.

Maintaining his current production could also put Jeanty in line for the Heisman Trophy. He's arguably at the head of the pack right now and will become an even bigger favorite if Colorado star Travis Hunter is sidelined for any period of time thanks to the shoulder injury he suffered Saturday.

Regardless of whether he wins the Heisman or breaks Sanders' record, Jeanty is having a season to remember.

Ashton Jeanty: Being 1st RB to Win Heisman Since Derrick Henry 'Would Mean A lot'

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty says it would "mean a lot" to earn his position's first Heisman Trophy since Derrick Henry in 2015.

"It would mean a lot, you know, not just for me but I think for the position of running backs," Jeanty said Friday on ESPN's SportsCenter.

"And then just the award itself, you know, cause lately its's been a, you know, Power-5 quarterback award, but just shedding light that no matter where you're at if you're a talented player you will be recognized and you will be rewarded for it."

Jeanty currently leads all college football players with 1,031 rushing yards for 16 rushing touchdowns through the first five games of his junior season.

That's a full 260 yards ahead of Iowa's Kaleb Johnson, who with 771 yards stands as the current runner-up for the FBS lead.

Jeanty has also established himself as one of the most efficient runners in college football by averaging 10.9 yards per carry on just 95 total attempts.

That efficiency has allowed Jeanty to take the FBS lead while still allowing Boise State to rest their star back. Despite sitting out the last two quarters of the Broncos' Saturday blowout of Utah State, Jeanty finished out the victory having run 13 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

Henry was awarded the Heisman in 2015 after setting the SEC single-season rushing record with 1,986 yards on his way to 23 rushing touchdowns for Alabama.

The last time a non-quarterback won the Heisman was in 2020, when Devonta Smith led CFB with 1,511 receiving yards, also for the Crimson Tide.

One way for Jeanty to ensure he could place his name among Henry and Smith's despite facing a Group of Five schedule is through challenging legendary Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders' all-time single-season record of 2,628 rushing yards in 1988.

Jeanty would need to increase his carries from 19 per game in order to get on pace to Sanders' standard. At his current rate, however, he is well on his way to leading Boise State toward the Group of Five spot in the CFP.

The Broncos' quest for a berth in the inaugural 12-team playoff will continue on Saturday with a game at Hawaii.

OVERALL

Ashton Jeanty is a naturally talented running back with a manipulative rushing style.

Jeanty is a patient runner who tempers his pace to allow his OL time to engage and secure their blocking assignments. With plus-level vision, he quickly finds daylight through designated gaps. Jeanty uses quick and decisive footwork to sift through the defensive front seven, breaking into the open field. He is advanced at navigating traffic and congested quarters once he breaks the first level of the defense.

Ad Placeholder

Jeanty has an elite-level contact balance and is difficult to bring down. He pinballs off defenders and absorbs their attempted tackles while staying on his feet. Jeanty is a yards-after-contact merchant—his ability to get stronger upon defensive contact is impressive. Jeanty is a momentum runner who powers through arm tackles and delivers a stiff arm to break free from defenders. His burst and acceleration possess enough juice or explosiveness to pop through the line of scrimmage and reach top speed quickly in the open field. He has multiple long/explosive touchdown runs on his resume this season against Mountain West competition.

Jeanty must be stopped at the line of scrimmage or behind it. He is most vulnerable as a ball carrier when he cannot build forward momentum. Despite having a good burst to reach top speed quickly, there is no next gear after that. This raises questions on whether his ability to generate big plays (50+ yards) will translate to the NFL at the frequency it has in college. There are concerns about Jeanty's ability to win the corner and outrun pursuit angles.

Jeanty is a willing and competitive pass protector, but his technique needs refining. His hands and punches can be sloppy, leading to not securing his defender. At times, he approaches blocks with low hands, giving up his chest to second-level defenders attacking downhill with momentum. Jeanty does not showcase explosive lateral abilities—he can get caught between the tackles when pressing the LOS. Jeanty's jump cuts do not cover much ground to counter defensive run fits on inside runs.

Overall, Ashton Jeanty is a high-volume and playmaking running back. Between his bowling ball-esque frame and ELITE contact balance, Jeanty's game translates incredibly well to the NFL. He fits today's run offenses with wide zone and pin-pull gap schemes. Jeanty is a bell-cow running back who can shoulder the load for an NFL rushing attack.

It might be time for college football fans across the country to start paying attention to Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, but his head coach wasn't surprised at all when he turned in another dominant performance.

"He was relentless," Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said of his running back following Saturday's 45-24 victory over Washington State, per Jason Chatraw of the Associated Press. "Talk about a guy who puts his team on his back, loves this team, and will find a way to score because that's what the team needs—that's Ashton. When your best players are your hardest workers, you've always got a shot."

Jeanty ran for a head-turning 259 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 10.0 yards per carry in a performance that should vault him into Heisman Trophy conversations.

He also caught the eye of Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane:

https://twitter.com/DevonAchaneNFL/status/1840252289333784800

It was yet another incredible showing for the junior, who also ran for 267 yards and six touchdowns in the season-opening win over Georgia Southern and 192 yards and three scores the following week against Oregon.

He nearly led the Broncos to an upset win over the Ducks, as the Big Ten team needed a fourth-quarter comeback to escape with a 37-34 win.

Jeanty will have his hands full playing his way into a Heisman Trophy picture that includes Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, Miami quarterback Cam Ward, Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter and others, but there is no denying his individual greatness.

And he is putting up these numbers against quality competition, as Oregon is a potential national title contender while Washington State was 4-0 going into Saturday's game.

The star running back wasted no time setting the tone Saturday with a 64-yard touchdown run on the game's first possession. He also helped put the game away with a 59-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and used a combination of power and speed to run through arm tackles and past the second and third levels of the defense.

Boise State is now 3-1 on the season and could play its way into CFP discussions with the expanded 12-team field.

Jeanty and the Broncos won't have as many headline games as some of the other Heisman Trophy contenders, but it will be impossible to ignore him if he remains a touchdown machine the rest of the season.

That is especially the case if the Broncos contend for a Mountain West title.
