World Cup 2022 Scores: Sunday's Results and Monday's Round of 16 Schedule

Dec 4, 2022

Two of Europe’s most successful men’s soccer teams landed spots in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals on Sunday.

France used a 3-1 win to eliminate Poland and continue their title defense.

England benefited from a pair of first-half goals to start the scoring against Senegal and set up a final-eight clash with Les Bleus.

The two sides have had plenty of meetings in their history, but the quarterfinal showdown between the two sides will be their first World Cup match since 1982.

France 3, Poland 1

France’s top two goal scorers carried it into the final eight.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in the 44th minute. Giroud surpassed Thierry Henry on the top of France’s all-time men's scoring chart with the first-half tally.

The AC Milan forward tied Kylian Mbappé for France's top scorer in Qatar for 30 minutes.

Mbappé closed the game for Les Bleus with rallies in the 74th and 91st minutes.

The 23-year-old striker holds a two-goal lead over his closest competition for the Golden Boot. Giroud and five others have three goals in Qatar.

Poland left the tournament with a goal thanks to a very late penalty call.

Robert Lewandowski missed his initial penalty, but it was ordered to be retaken after Hugo Lloris was off his line when he saved the Barcelona forward's first attempt. Lewandowski did not waste his second chance, as he deposited his second World Cup goal into the net past the French captain.

The goal might have been the last for Lewandowski at the World Cup. He will be 37 in 2026 when the tournament comes to North America.

England 3, Senegal 0.

England followed a similar pattern of play as France to get ahead of Senegal.

The Three Lions waited until the end of the first half to break into the lead, but they took it one step further than France by scoring twice before halftime.

Jordan Henderson put the Three Lions in front in the 38th minute. Jude Bellingham set up the goal with a run down the left side of the box.

Bellingham’s assist added to his already loaded resume. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is one of the most coveted young players in the world.

The 19-year-old sprung another attack that led to a goal right before halftime.

Bellingham fed Phil Foden, who then passed to Harry Kane for the striker’s first goal of the tournament.

Foden was back in the assisting role in the 57th minute, when he found Bukayo Saka for the thrid England goal.

England has scored at least three goals in three of its four games in Qatar. The Three Lions may need that attacking firepower to keep up with Mbappé and Co. on Saturday afternoon.

Senegal departed the tournament without a goal in the knockout round. The Lions of Teranga put together a fantastic effort throughout their four games even without the injured Sadio Mané.

Monday Schedule

Japan vs. Croatia (10 am ET, Fox)

Brazil vs. South Korea (2 pm ET, Fox)

Olivier Giroud Celebrated for Historic Goal as Mbappé, France Advance at World Cup

Olivier Giroud made French national team history on Sunday in France's 3-1 win over Poland in the round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 36-year-old French striker scored his 52nd-career goal for Les Bleus in the 44th minute to pass Thierry Henry to top France's all-time scoring chart.

The current AC Milan player, who also starred at Arsenal and Chelsea, received all sorts of praise from current and former players, as well as many others.

Giroud also played a role in setting up Kylian Mbappé's 74th-minute goal. Mbappé also scored again in the 91st minute to reach 33 goals for France. It may not be long before Mbappé holds the record that Giroud currently has.

France has advanced to the quarterfinal, where it will face the winner of the England-Senegal round of 16 clash that takes place later on Sunday.

World Cup 2022 Scores: Wednesday's Results and Thursday's Schedule

The second advancement spot out of Group C at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar went down to the final seconds of the third group-stage games on Wednesday afternoon.

Poland lost 2-0 to Argentina, but a late concession by Mexico in its 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia allowed Poland to go through on goal differential.

For about 20 minutes, which felt like an eternity to both teams, Poland appeared to be headed through on the fair-play tiebreaker with two fewer yellow cards than Mexico.

Saudi Arabia's 95th-minute goal made the math as simple as it could be for the Poles, who took second behind Argentina in Group C.

Argentina may have scored four or five goals in its win over Poland, but Wojciech Szczęsny had other plans for the Albiceleste.

Argentina finally broke the deadlock out of halftime and surged in front to win Group C and set up a round-of-16 clash with Group D runner-up Australia. Poland faces Group D winner France to start the knockout round.

Australia used a victory over Denmark to gain an advantage over Denmark and Tunisia behind France in Group D's final two games, which were far less chaotic than the two in play in Group C.

Updated Round of 16 Matchups

Saturday: Netherlands vs. USA, 10 a.m. ET

Saturday: Argentina vs. Australia, 2 p.m. ET

Sunday: France vs. Poland, 10 a.m. ET

Sunday: England vs. Senegal, 2 p.m. ET

Group C

1. Argentina - 6 points

2. Poland - 4 (advanced on goal differential)

3. Mexico - 4

4. Saudi Arabia - 3

Wednesday Results

Argentina 2, Poland 0

Mexico 2, Saudi Arabia 1

The Group C drama escalated at the start of the second half in each game.

Argentina seized a lead over Poland through Alexis Mac Allister in the 46th minute.

Mexico then pulled ahead of Saudi Arabia in the 47th minute through a Henry Martin goal off a corner kick. El Tri scored again five minutes later on one of the best goals of the tournament. Luis Chávez struck a free kick from outside the box directly into the top right corner of the net.

Julián Álvarez then pulled Argentina ahead by two goals with his 67th-minute strike. That goal put Mexico and Poland level on every tiebreaker except for fair play.

Saudi Arabia then ended Mexico's time in Qatar for certain with a 95th-minute strike off the boot of Salem Al-Dawsari, who scored against Argentina earlier in the tournament.

Al-Dawsari's goal did not mean anything for Saudi Arabia—all it did was confirm that Poland would go through over Mexico.

Argentina's group win means it plays Australia on Saturday in the same side of the bracket as the United States and the Netherlands. Poland plays France on Sunday.

Group D

1. France - 6

2. Australia - 6

3. Tunisia - 4

4. Denmark - 1

Wednesday Results

Tunisia 1, France 0

Australia 1, Denmark 0

The key events in Group D took place within a few minutes of each other at the Al Janoub Stadium and Education City Stadium.

Tunisia struck for the first goal of the day through Wahbi Khazri in the 58th minute against France.

Tunisia was in second place in Group D for only a few minutes because Australia answered right away with its goal vs. Denmark.

Mathew Leckie cut a rolling shot past a diving Kasper Schmeichel to place the Socceroos into second place, where they remained after 30 nervy minutes in both games.

Australia held on to a clean sheet that was in part recorded because of its strong defensive play, led by center back Harry Souttar, and in part because Denmark could not put many significant chances on goal.

Denmark put just four of its 15 shots on target and none of the strikers it brought on to save it from elimination were particularly good. Denmark needed a win, and therefore two goals in 30 minutes, to hang on to its hopes of staying in Qatar.

Tunisia's 1-0 lead somehow held on through the final minute against France. The French rotated nine players into their starting lineup and looked disjointed throughout the first 60 minutes.

Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Antoine Griezmann changed the game when they entered the field. Tunisia could not get out of its own end in the final 30 minutes. The African side needed to hold on to the win and for Denmark to come back to have a chance of moving on.

Just as Australia confirmed its spot in the final 16, Tunisia conceded to Griezmann, but after a lengthy video review, the goal was ruled out and Tunisia left the World Cup with an historic win over France.

The Frenchmen topped the group despite the loss because its goal differential was four goals better than Australia's.

World Cup 2022 Groups Table: Predicting the Knockout Bracket

Thirty of the 32 teams entered in the 2022 FIFA World Cup are still alive to advance to the knockout round.

The permutations are easier for some squads to advance to the round of 16, and only France has officially confirmed its spot in the knockout round.

Qatar and Canada are the two officially eliminated squads. That number could inflate after Monday's games in Groups G and H depending on the results in those four matches.

A handful of squads, including the United States men's national team, face win-and-in situations on their final group matchdays.

Other teams, like Germany, need wins and some help in potentially lopsided matchups to keep their World Cup hopes alive for at least a few more days.

Round of 16 Predictions

Netherlands (Group A winner) vs. United States (Group B runner-up)

Argentina (Group C winner) vs. Denmark (Group D runner-up)

Spain (Group E winner) vs. Morocco (Group F runner-up)

Brazil (Group G winner) vs. Portugal (Group H runner-up)

England (Group B winner) vs. Ecuador (Group A runner-up)

France (Group D winner) vs. Poland (Group C runner-up)

Croatia (Group F winner) vs. Germany (Group E runner-up)

Uruguay (Group H winner) vs. Switzerland (Group G runner-up)

Group A

1. Netherlands - 4 points (+2 goal differential)

2. Ecuador - 4 (+2)

3. Senegal - 3 (0)

4. Qatar - 0 (-4) - eliminated from tournament.

The Netherlands should confirm themselves as Group A winner on Tuesday with a win over Qatar.

The Dutch should outclass the host nation with ease. Qatar was eliminated from advancing to the knockout round after the second matchday. The Qataris have not had enough quality to deal with Ecuador and Senegal, and the same can be said about their matchup with the Dutch.

Most of the Group A attention Tuesday will be on Ecuador and Senegal inside the Khalifa International Stadium.

Ecuador has a one-point advantage over Senegal, and its defense could be massive in that match. La Tri conceded once in Qatar. The concession to the Dutch was the first goal allowed in eight matches for the South American side.

Senegal's back line has been more open lately, as it has one clean sheet in the last seven games.

Ecuador only needs a draw to advance, and even if it wins, it will likely not match the Netherlands' goal output against Qatar.

Group B

1. England - 4 (+4)

2. Iran - 3 (-2)

3. United States - 2 (0)

4. Wales - 1 (-2)

The United States needs a win over Iran to advance out of Group B. Any other result would not allow them to leap over Iran in the standings.

The Americans played three solid halves in the first two games, and they need to have more punch in the final third to beat an Iran side that has a negative goal differential from its 6-2 loss to England.

England should beat the Welsh in a match of regional rivals. Wales will be without goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who was sent off late in the second half against Iran.

Wales looked the worst of the four Group B sides through two matches, and it may be hard for the Welsh to compete with the England, especially a result needed for the Three Lions to advance in first place.

England has extra motivation to finish in first place because that would allow it to avoid a round-of-16 clash with the Netherlands.

Group C

1. Poland - 4 (+2)

2. Argentina - 3 (+1)

3. Saudi Arabia - 3 (-1)

4. Mexico - 1 (-2)

The Argentina-Poland match will determine the fate of Group C.

Argentina looked relieved after beating Mexico on Saturday, and that help the Albiceleste play with more energy and less stress against Poland.

The South American side should be favored against Poland and a win gets it into the knockout round, and more importantly, it will avoid France in the round of 16.

Poland can still get through to the knockout round with a loss. A Mexico-Saudi Arabia draw allows that to happen.

Mexico will be playing for pride and an outside chance to land a spot in the round of 16. Saudi Arabia struggled to create offense against Poland after beating Argentina in its opener.

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa will be Poland's best friend on Wednesday. If he keeps Saudi Arabia out, Mexico scores one or two goals and Poland loses by just one goal, Poland will go through on goal differential.

Group D

1. France - 6 (+4)

2. Australia - 3 (-2)

3. Denmark - 1 (-1)

4. Tunisia - 1 (-1)

France is assumed to be the Group D winner.

The reigning World Cup champion has two wins from two games, and it should beat Tunisia, even if it rotates some of its squad to stay fresh for the knockout round.

Denmark should be the favored side against Australia. The Danes resided in the same situation at UEFA Euro 2020 and won. They went on to reach the semifinals of that tournament.

Denmark needs a win to leap over Australia, while the Aussies just need a draw from that match to advance.

Tunisia is still alive, but a win over France seems very unlikely with the form that Kylian Mbappé is in. Mbappé is tied for the Golden Boot lead with three goals.

Group E

1. Spain - 4 (+7)

2. Japan - 3 (0)

3. Costa Rica - 3 (-6)

4. Germany - 1 (-1)

All four teams are still alive in Group E.

Germany needs a win over Costa Rica and a bit of help to avoid a second straight group-stage exit.

Costa Rica gained an edge on Germany with a win over Japan on Sunday, but the Ticos could still be outclassed by a roster full of Bayern Munich stars.

Spain's formula to win the group is simple. La Roja needs to beat Japan to finish in first place. A draw combined with a Germany win allows the Spanish to get into the round of 16 in first as well.

Japan beat Germany and then went into a conservative strategy against Costa Rica that cost it that result. Japan could now be on the brink of elimination given how strong Spain is playing.

Group F

1. Croatia - 4 (+3)

2. Morocco - 4 (+2)

3. Belgium - 3 (-1)

4. Canada - 0 (-4) - eliminated from tournament

Croatia and Morocco have the clear advantages going into the final day of play in Group F.

Croatia's attack woke up against Canada to put it on top of the group ahead of Morocco on goal differential.

Belgium has been one of the most disappointing teams in the tournament, and it faces an uphill climb to get out of third place since it plays Croatia.

Croatia outperformed Belgium over 180 minutes of play, and it is expected to at least get a point out of the meeting of 2018 World Cup semifinalists.

Canada's defense allowed numerous wide-open chances to Croatia, and that could once again be its downfall against Morocco. The second-place team in Group F could be the only African side in the knockout round.

Group G

1. Brazil - 3 (+2)

2. Switzerland - 3 (+1)

3. Cameroon - 0 (-1)

4. Serbia - 0 (-2)

Group G is one of two groups with two matches left to play.

Brazil should be fine without Neymar because Richarlison is in some of the best form of any player on the international level. Richarlison scored twice in the opener against Serbia.

The Selecao take on Switzerland on Monday for first place in the group. That could allow Serbia or Cameroon to sneak into second place with a victory in their contest Monday.

Serbia sits at the biggest disadvantage because it conceded twice against Brazil. The European side could make up that gap with a win over Cameroon before it faces Switzerland in the group finale.

Brazil looked like the strongest squad in the first set of matches, and it is the favorite to win Group G until proved otherwise.

Group H

1. Portugal - 3 (+1)

2. Uruguay - 1 (0)

3. South Korea - 1 (0)

4. Ghana - 0 (-1)

Portugal and Uruguay find themselves in the same situation in Group H as Brazil and Switzerland in Group G.

They are perceived as the top two teams in Group H and either side can gain separation on top of the group Monday.

Portugal scored three goals, but it also conceded on two occasions to Ghana. Uruguay had the stronger defensive performance with a clean sheet in a scoreless draw versus South Korea.

Uruguay's defense could hold up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. and its attack, led by Darwin Núñez and Luis Suárez, could take advantage of a Portuguese defense that was opened up in the second half by Ghana.

Kylian Mbappé's Historic Excellence Thrills Fans as France Beats Denmark

Nov 26, 2022

Kylian Mbappé

France forward Kylian Mbappé continued his remarkable World Cup goal-scoring pace Saturday with a brace to lead Les Bleus to a 2-1 win over Denmark.

Mbappé tied Brazilian legend Pelé for the most goals in World Cup history before turning 24 with seven, a record he'll likely own by himself by the time the tournament ends in Qatar. His second-half heroics also clinched a berth in the knockout rounds for France, which beat Australia in its Group D opener.

Both goals Saturday were a result of fine passing plays by the reigning champions. The first was a well-executed give-and-go between Mbappé and Theo Hernández.

The second was a perfectly delivered cross from Antoine Griezmann that Mbappé finished with a touch at the far post.

Here's a look at some Twitter reaction to the superstar's latest standout effort:

France figures to rest some of its starters for the group finale against Tunisia on Wednesday in order to maximize its chances of having a healthy, fresh squad for the knockout rounds.

In turn, Mbappé may not get a chance to set the new under-24 scoring record until the elimination games get underway, but all signs point to his having a monster tournament as Les Bleus attempt to defend their championship.

France are all but locked in as the winners of Group D—it would take a French loss vs. Tunisia and a lopsided win by Australia over Denmark for the Socceroos to take the top spot—which means its first knockout match will likely be Dec. 4 against the Group C runners-up.

Mbappé is a strong bet to take on a starring role in that match, as well.

Olivier Giroud's Historic Career Praised as Kylian Mbappé, France Crush Australia

There was a moment during Tuesday's final game at the World Cup when another upset appeared to be brewing.

Australia scored the first goal against defending champions France within nine minutes, and after Saudi Arabia's shocking upset of Argentina earlier in the day, there was a feeling that anything could happen at Qatar's winter World Cup.

France promptly extinguished that belief, led by the explosive attacking pair of Oliver Giroud and Kylian Mbappé.

Giroud's brace and Mbappé's goal and assist led France in a swashbuckling and dominant 4-1 performance that could have been far worse for the Aussies. France recovered from its early concession by swarming the Australian box for the remainder of the game.

It was a historic performance for Giroud, who tied Thierry Henry for the most international goals in French history (51). It was yet another impressive showing from Mbappé, arguably the brightest young star in the game today.

Suffice to say, football Twitter was singing the pair's praises after the match:

Giroud likely will break Henry's record at this World Cup, with Karim Benzema injured. And someday, Mbappé will almost assuredly break Giroud's record.

Australia was always going to be overmatched against France, early shocker or not, but Tuesday's performance was a reminder that the French are real threats to defend as champions.

They don't have many weaknesses. Their ability to break opponents down on either flank and create chance after chance is a cascading wave that tends to find any cracks in a defensive dam. They are experienced and deep, and Mbappé may be the best player at the tournament, full stop.

How many countries could lose a Ballon d'Or winner like Benzema and still look like this? How many could plug that gap with a player of Giroud's quality?

Not many, is the answer. Maybe none.

So yes, upsets were in the air on Tuesday. France descended upon them like a tornado, blowing out Australia in a performance that reminded the world of the threat posed by the defending champs.

World Cup 2022 Scores: Tuesday's Group Results and Wednesday's Schedule

The third day of the 2022 FIFA World Cup was bookended by a stunning loss from one of the pre-tournament favorites and a win by the reigning champion.

Argentina kicked off the four-game slate with a stunning 2-1 defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia. Lionel Messi scored for the South American side, but that was an afterthought following the pair of goals netted by Saudi Arabia in the second half.

For 25 minutes, France was on edge in the final match of the day, but the reigning World Cup champion rebounded in fine fashion to beat Australia 4-1.

In between those two results were a pair of scoreless draws between Denmark and Tunisia in Group D and Mexico and Poland in Group C.

France is in great shape to win its group because of the Denmark-Tunisia tie, and while Argentina will be disappointed with its result, it still sits in good shape because Mexico and Poland failed to capitalize.

Group C

1. Saudi Arabia - 3 points (2 goals for, 1 goal against, +1 goal differential)

2. Mexico - 1 (0 GF, 0 GA, 0 GD)

3. Poland - 1 (0 GF, 0 GA, 0 GD)

4. Argentina - 0 (1 GF, 2 GA, -1 GD)

Saudi Arabia produced one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history to open up Tuesday's four-game slate.

Not only did Saudi Arabia beat Argentina, but it did so in come-from-behind fashion with two goals in the second half.

Salem Al-Dawsari delivered the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute on a brilliant strike that flew into the top right-hand corner.

The pair of Saudi goals came after Argentina controlled the first half.

Lionel Messi opened his 2022 World Cup account with a 10th-minute penalty. La Albiceleste thought that would be the first of many on Tuesday, but three Argentina goals in the first half were ruled out for offside and the South American side had trouble breaking down the Saudi defense in the second half.

Mexico and Poland failed to take advantage of Argentina's slip-up later on Tuesday. The two sides played to a scoreless draw.

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made the biggest play of the game when he stopped a Robert Lewandowski penalty.

Entering Tuesday, a scoreless draw would not have been the worst result for Mexico and Poland. Both teams were expected to beat Saudi Arabia and scrap for points against Argentina to make it to the knockout round.

Now that Saudi Arabia looks a bit tougher than projected, the draw looks bad for both teams because it feels like a missed opportunity on both sides.

Lewandowski and Poland will test the strengths of the Saudis on Saturday, while Mexico takes on Argentina later in the day.

Group D

1. France - 3 (4 GF, 1 GA, +3 GD)

2. Tunisia - 1 (0 GF, 0 GA, 0 GD)

3. Denmark - 1 (0 GF, 0 GA, 0 GD)

4, Australia - 0 (1 GF, 4 GA, -3 GD)

Australia presented France with an early scare when Craig Goodwin opened the scoring in the ninth minute.

The Aussie goal set off some alarm bells because of a recent trend that has plagued recent World Cup winners. The three champions before France failed to make it out of the group stage in their title defense.

France did not panic, and it found the back of the net twice before halftime. Adrien Rabiot headed home the equalizer in the 27th minute to begin France's dominance.

Olivier Giroud scored in the 32nd minute and then again in the 71st minute. Kylian Mbappe opened his account with a goal in the 68th minute.

With his second goal, Giroud tied Thierry Henry for the most goals scored for the France men's national team.

Giroud can eclipse Henry on the French scoring chart against Denmark on Saturday.

The Danes played to a scoreless draw with Tunisia in the first of two Group D games that were played on Tuesday.

Denmark produced six shots on goal, but it could not find a breakthrough against the African side. Tunisia will try to carry over the momentum gained from the draw into Saturday's clash with Australia.
