Hyeseong Kim Called Up by Dodgers, Could Make MLB Debut vs. Braves

Adam Wells
May 3, 2025
Los Angeles Dodgers v Seattle Mariners

Amid a rash of injuries to their pitching staff, the Los Angeles Dodgers will counter by adding to their lineup with Hyeseong Kim joining the roster.

Casey Porter of Dodgers Daily first reported the news of Kim's call-up.

Tommy Edman has been out of the lineup since injuring his ankle during Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins. He told reporters before Friday's game that his ankle was feeling "much better" and that he could be back in the lineup as soon as Saturday, depending on how his on-field went.

The Dodgers opted to be cautious with Edman, who missed time last season with a sprained ankle suffered during a rehab assignment. His IL stint is retroactive to April 30, meaning he will be eligible to return on May 10.

Kim signed a three-year deal worth $12.5 million guaranteed with the Dodgers in January. The 26-year-old spent the first eight years of his professional career in the KBO playing for the Kiwoom Heroes.

One of Kim's biggest selling points coming to MLB from South Korea was his versatility. He is a high-contact hitter with speed and the ability to play multiple positions. His power has played up more through 28 games in the minors.

Kim is hitting .252/.328/.470 with five homers and 13 stolen bases in 115 at-bats with Oklahoma City. He hit five or more homers in just four of his eight KBO seasons.

The Dodgers gave Kim reps at second base, third base and center field in spring training. Their plan for him will likely come into focus when the lineup card is released for Saturday's game in Atlanta, which starts at 4:15 p.m. ET.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani Talks Hitting 1st MLB HR Since Birth of Daughter vs. Pirates

Miami Marlins v Los Angeles Dodgers

Tuesday marked a milestone moment for Shohei Ohtani, who hit his first home run since becoming a father in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 15-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.

Ohtani told reporters about the feeling of hitting that homer since his wife, Mamiko, gave birth to the couple's first child on April 19.

"It was a good home run to get back on the board for this game," Ohtani said through an interpreter. ""I haven't hit one since being a father, so it's a really nice one to be able to do that."

The home run was a laser off Sandy Alcántara to leadoff the bottom of the first inning on the first pitch he saw.

Ohtani announced the birth of his daughter in a post on Instagram, writing that he is "grateful to my loving wife" and "to my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents."

During his postgame press conference on Tuesday, Ohtani said his routine has had to change since the birth of his daughter but things have been okay so far because the Dodgers are in the midst of a six-game homestand.

"A little change in the routine in terms of, for example today I went to the hospital and came straight to the field. Just being here at home is nice to be able to spend time, but on the road, it's going to be a little bit of a challenge since I won't be here. But I'm just grateful for the safe delivery. I'm glad that even though I couldn't sleep as much as I wanted to, it's a good kind of not-getting-enough-sleep situation."

Ohtani missed three games on the paternity list from April 17-19 before returning to the lineup on April 20 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had a brief slump upon returning, hitting .125/.222/.125 in just 18 plate appearances in his first four games back.

Things have been back to normal since April 26. Ohtani is hitting .467/.600/1.000 with five extra-base hits in 20 plate appearances. The Dodgers have won four straight games, moving back into first place in the NL West with a 20-10 record.

After Wednesday's series finale against the Marlins, Los Angeles will begin a 10-game road trip starting on Friday in Atlanta. It's the longest road trip of the season for the defending World Series champs.

Roki Sasaki Told Dodgers Having Japanese-Style Toilets Would Help Contract Decision

Dodgers vs Pirates in Los Angeles, CA

The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't been frugal when it comes to spending money to get talent, but the team took a unique approach to help land Rōki Sasaki this offseason.

Per the Orange County Register's Bill Blunkett, team president and CEO Stan Kasten added Japanese-style toilets to the Dodgers' clubhouse amid a $100 million renovation because Sasaki said having such features could sway his decision of where to sign.

“During our first meeting with Roki, we were telling him about the project we had ongoing to upgrade our clubhouse and facilities,” Kasten said. “I was telling him about all the amenities we were adding. ‘We’re going to have this and this and this.’ And he asked, ‘Are you going to have Japanese-style toilets?’”

Sasaki said after the fact that he was partially joking with Kasten, but having Japanese-style toilets was a preference. He also said Los Angeles' willingness to make the change just to make players more comfortable “was definitely a factor."

“It sounds like a joke. But for me, it’s pretty important,” Sasaki said through an interpreter.

When Sasaki said he wanted Japanese-style toilets, Kasten didn't hesitate to make the change.

“Done. You got it,” Kasten said he told Sasaki at the meeting. “It was a good idea that we got from a player.”

How much of a factor the Japanese-style toilets influenced Sasaki is unclear, but it clearly made some kind of an impact as he ended up signing with the Dodgers in January.

Pirates vs. Dodgers Betting Odds, Player Props, Picks for April 25

The two favorites to win the National League Cy Young Award face off at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

Paul Skenes is listed ahead of Yoshinobu Yamamoto to win the Cy Young, but on Friday, Yamamoto is the favored pitcher.

The Dodgers are not just favored to take down Skenes, but they are the third-largest favorite on Friday’s Major League Baseball board at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-170)

Yamamoto has gone over this number in three of his five starts, and each time he's gone over, he's done so easily.

The Japanese right-hander fanned 10 batters twice, once against Texas and one versus Detroit, and he whiffed nine batters in a matchup with the Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates have the eighth-most punchouts against right-handers. In comparison, the Cubs are fourth, Detroit is 17th and Texas is 19th.

As a whole, the Pirates have the fifth-most strikeouts. The Cubs and Tigers both rank in the top 12 in overall strikeouts.

Yamamoto has a similarly favorable matchup on paper on Friday as he did in the outings versus the Cubs and Tigers. Both of those high totals were recorded inside Dodger Stadium.

The blueprint to get to seven K's is almost too easy for Yamamoto, and because of that, you should look into betting his strikeout ladder as well.

Paul Skenes Over 4.5 Hits Allowed (-110)

The Dodgers did not seem to be overwhelmed by Skenes’ stuff in two meetings last season.

Skenes gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits and was tagged for three home runs over 12 innings.

Ad Placeholder

Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages went deep off Skenes. Ohtani went 2-for-6 with a home run and Hernandez went 3-for-5 with a long ball against the reigning NL Rookie of the Year.

On top of that familiarity, Skenes has allowed six hits in two of his five starts this season and hasn’t had more than seven strikeouts in a single outing in 2025.

More balls are being put in play against Skenes, and with that comes a higher chance for hits compared to the back end of 2024, when he was hitting the eight-to-nine strikeout range with more regularity.

Dodgers -1.5 Run Line (+110)

Ad Placeholder

Yamamoto is the more trustworthy shutdown pitcher at this early stage of the season.

Additionally, the Dodgers are far more likely to change the game with one swing. They are tied for the league lead in homers at 41, while Pittsburgh only has 20. The Dodgers have more home runs at home than the Pirates do as a team.

Los Angeles is 4-1 on the run line this season with Yamamoto on the mound and Pittsburgh’s last two losses with Skenes starting were by multiple runs.

Dodgers Unveil New Takashi Murakami Collection For Japanese Heritage Night in Photos

Los Angeles Dodgers v Pittsburgh Pirates

The Los Angeles Dodgers unveiled a new Takashi Murakami collection in honor of Japanese Heritage Night at Dodger Stadium.

This collection features a Dodgers hoodie and T-shirts that will be available at Dodger Stadium on April 28 when the defending World Series champs host the Miami Marlins.

This is the latest collaboration between Murakami and MLB. The Japanese artist previously designed custom jerseys for the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs leading up to the Tokyo Series on March 18-19.

Murakami also worked with Topps to release a card collection from the MLB Tokyo Series, which included a one-of-one limited edition Shohei Ohtani card autographed by the three-time MVP and artist.

The Murakami collection has been wildly popular with fans. Steve Henson of the Los Angeles Times noted that an MLB Tokyo Series collection pop-up shop on Fairfax Ave. in the Los Angeles area last month generated $40 million in sales.

Henson noted that the popularity from the pop-up shop inspired Murakami and the Dodgers to work together again on a new collection.

As part of the Japanese Heritage Night festivities at Dodger Stadium, fans will also be treated to live music and performances at Centerfield Plaza and a Japanese Heritage Night jersey with a special ticket package.

Fans not in the L.A. area will have an opportunity to purchase the new Murakami collection on Complex's official website on April 28.

Dodgers' Blake Treinen Placed on IL with Elbow Injury, Will Undergo MRI

Los Angeles Dodgers v Washington Nationals

The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen depth took a hit Saturday.

The team placed veteran right-handed reliever Blake Treinen on the injured list due to inflammation in his right forearm. He is expected to get an MRI on Saturday and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts downplayed the "level of concern" the team has.

“Level of concern not too high right now,” Roberts said, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. "They’ll know more soon."

Treinen is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA and two saves in eight appearances in 2025. He was an extremely impactful reliever for the team during its 2024 run to a World Series title as he recorded a 2.19 ERA in nine appearances.

Ad Placeholder

He was limited to just five games in 2022 and missed the entire 2023 season with a shoulder injury.

The team officially put him on the 15-day injured list, so he will be out until early May at least. He joins Michael Kopech as the notable Dodger relievers who are on the injured list.

In Treinen's absence, Los Angeles will look for Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips and Anthony Banda to carry the slack. The team is currently 15-7 and are second in the NL West.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, Wife Mamiko Announce Birth of Daughter in IG Photo

Shohei Ohtani's family has officially added a new member.

The Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star was put on paternity leave ahead of Friday's matchup against the Texas Rangers. He revealed on Instagram Saturday morning that he and his wife, Mamiko, had welcomed their baby daughter to the world.

He thanked the Dodgers organization and fans for their support in addition to the "medical professionals and everyone who dedicated their support to us."

Ohtani announced in December that he and his wife were expecting their first child.

He is in his second season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has hit .288/.380/.550 with six home runs and eight RBIs in 20 games. His efforts have helped the Dodgers start the season 15-6 as they look to defend their 2024 World Series title.

Ohtani is eligible to miss up to three games while on the paternity list. The Dodgers will play Saturday and Sunday in Texas and will be off on Monday so he could potentially return to the lineup on Tuesday when the team faces the Chicago Cubs.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani Placed on Paternity List, Could Return During Rangers Series

Colorado Rockies v Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are placing two-way star Shohei Ohtani on MLB's paternity list.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Friday the team activated outfielder Eddie Rosario to fill out their roster. Roberts said Ohtani may return by the conclusion of the three-game series with the Texas Rangers, which wraps up Sunday.

The reigning National League MVP announced in December he and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, were expecting their first child together.

MLB rules allow a player to remain on the paternity list for up to three days. Should Ohtani exhaust the full amount, he wouldn't return until L.A. opens a two-game set with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday in the Windy City.

Rangers pitchers would probably prefer he take the entire weekend to be with his wife and newborn.

Ohtani is on pace for another monster season offensively. He has six homers, a .288/.380/.550 slash line, and his 21 runs scored are the most in the majors.

Rosario will provide some depth and give Roberts another left-handed bat over the next few days. The 33-year-old is coming off his worst season, having slugged .316 with the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves. But he's an experienced slugger who has two home runs and 12 RBI through 69 Triple-A plate appearances in 2025.

Dodgers vs. Rangers Betting Odds, Player Props and Picks for April 18

Joe Tansey
Apr 18, 2025

The last two World Series winners go head-to-head this weekend in Texas.

The opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers carries an eye-popping pitching matchup with Yoshinobu Yamamoto opposing Jacob deGrom.

Only Yamamoto comes into Friday with ace-like numbers. DeGrom dealt with a decent bit of struggles in his last two starts.

DeGrom allowed seven earned runs across those two appearances, and he’s in for more challenges against a Dodgers lineup that comes in on a high after posting 19 runs in three games against the Colorado Rockies.

Jacob deGrom Over 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-145)

DeGrom allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits in his last two outings.

Ad Placeholder

Last Friday’s start against the Seattle Mariners was the more concerning of the two appearances because he gave up two home runs and walked four batters.

The strikeout power we’ve known deGrom for hasn’t been there yet in 2025. He has 13 punchouts, and six of them came in the opener against the Boston Red Sox, who have the highest strikeout rate in the majors.

The Dodgers are tied for the fifth-best team OPS, and they enter Friday level with the New York Yankees for the most home runs with 34.

Ad Placeholder

All it takes is one swing for the Dodgers to plate multiple runs and cash the over on deGrom’s earned runs allowed prop.

Los Angeles has already scored six or more runs on 11 occasions this season, and in its last series against Colorado it put up four or more runs against each starter.

DeGrom is obviously on a different level than the Rockies hurlers, but he isn’t the dominant deGrom of old either.

Freddie Freeman Over 1.5 Total Bases (+125)

Ad Placeholder

Freddie Freeman has one of the longest batter-versus-pitcher histories in the majors against deGrom.

Freeman has a .242 batting average, three home runs and six RBI in 66 career at-bats versus deGrom. A majority of those at-bats came while Freeman was in Atlanta and deGrom was a New York Met.

In general, seeing a pitcher more tends to favor the hitter.

But that isn’t the only reason to bet Freeman on Friday night.

The Dodgers first baseman produced three straight multi-hit games in the series against Colorado.

Dodgers ML (-125)

The Dodgers have the edge on the mound with Yamamoto.

Ad Placeholder

The Japanese right-hander carries a 1.23 ERA, and he did not allow an earned run in his last two starts.

DeGrom isn’t pitching at a Cy Young level yet. There’s more potential for deGrom to display flaws at this juncture in the season.

DeGrom’s recent home run concessions aren’t great for the matchup, either, as the Dodgers can break the game open with a few long balls, just like Seattle did against deGrom a week ago.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani 'Still A Couple Months Away' from Pitching Return, Roberts Says

Andrew Peters
Apr 17, 2025
Colorado Rockies v Los Angeles Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is "still a couple months away" from returning to the mound, manager Dave Roberts said on Thursday.

"I know that's still vague, but we're just trying to get to the next step, get to the next step and see where we're at," Roberts said on The Jim Rome Show. "But certainly expect him to pitch for us this year and through the postseason."

Ohtani has not pitched since August of 2023 when he tore his UCL while with the Los Angeles Angels. Roberts was a bit more optimistic about Ohtani's timeline this offseason, saying that he could be back on the mound by May.

Ad Placeholder

After that update from Roberts in February, he said in March that Ohtani's return to the mound is still "a ways off."

Ohtani, who won his third MVP award a season ago, has become so dominant at the plate that it's easy to forget how good he is on the mound. In 2023, he recorded a 3.14 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 23 starts, picking up a 10-5 record. In 2022, he notched a career-best 2.33 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, going 15-9 with 28 starts and finishing fourth in AL Cy Young voting.

Ad Placeholder

While the Dodgers haven't gotten Ohtani on the mound yet, he's earned his lucrative contract at the plate. He's coming off a season in which he hit .310/.390/.646 with 54 home runs and 130 RBI, adding 59 stolen bases as Los Angeles took home the World Series.

Through 20 games this year, Ohtani has six homers, eight RBI and five stolen bases with a .288 batting average, on pace for another 40-home-run, 40-steal season. The Dodgers are 14-6 on the year, sitting in third place in a competitive NL West.
