Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has been suspended from football and "all football activity" for 18 months by the FA.

He admitted an FA misconduct charge after it was "alleged that between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016, he placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions in breach of FA Rule E8."

Barton, 34, has also been fined £30,000.

Barton released a statement on his website in which he revealed he would appeal against the length of the ban.

He wrote: "I am very disappointed at the harshness of the sanction. The decision effectively forces me into an early retirement from playing football. To be clear from the outset here this is not match fixing and at no point in any of this is my integrity in question."

He also published a table of "the 30 most pertinent bets as determined by the FA," which included him backing his own team to lose, though only when he was not involved in the relevant matches, per ESPN's Alex Shaw:

The former Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers player felt his chequered past and profile as a troublemaker meant he received a more severe punishment than would have been meted out to others.

"I do feel the penalty is heavier than it might be for other less controversial players," he added in his statement.

The Telegraph's Ali Tweedale compared the length of Barton's ban to suspensions for other controversial incidents in the past:

With the ban set to take immediate effect, and assuming his appeal is unsuccessful, Barton will not be able to return to football until October of the 2018-19 season.

Burnley have secured promotion to the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Monday.

Sam Vokes' 59th-minute header was enough to seal maximum points for the Clarets and move them two points clear at the top of the Championship on 90 points.

Closest challengers Middlesbrough and Brighton and Hove Albion—both whom trail by two points—meet on the final day of the season at the Riverside, which means Sean Dyche's men have secured an automatic promotion berth with one match to spare.

The club's official account celebrated the confirmation of their return:

It is the third time in the club's history they have been promoted to the Premier League, and they have done so at the first attempt after relegation in 2014-15.

Sky Sports Statto detailed how Burnley joined a long list of teams to bounce back quickly:

Dyche's men have regained their top-flight status after just one year in the Championship and had looked likely promotion candidates from the first whistle of the season.

A trio of wins without conceding a goal set the tone for the Lancashire team's campaign, as they kicked into gear in the second half of the season. Burnley have looked unrivalled in 2016, recording an 22-game unbeaten run lasting back to Boxing Day's reverse to Hull City, per Soccerway.

ESPN football writer Richard Jolly felt the Clarets deserved their promotion place:

Aided by the division's top goalscorer Andre Gray, Burnley have shown their quality throughout the year and have looked a level above their opponents on occasions.

Gray, with 22 goals to his name in the league this season, was rightly awarded the Championship Player of the Year award for his efforts following his club-record £9 million move from Brentford in the summer.

England international and former Burnley striker Danny Ings congratulated his former club on their achievement:

Ex-player Kieran Trippier, now at Tottenham, was also pleased to see promotion achieved:

The Mirror's Ed Malyon praised the club's financial clout after completing their task this term:

Meanwhile, BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker was already looking ahead to next season:

Burnley will head to The Valley on Saturday to play relegated Charlton Athletic, knowing that a draw may be enough for them to seal the Championship title.

Manchester United are reportedly "favourites" to sign Burnley striker Danny Ings in the summer, despite ongoing rumours that he was set for a switch to Liverpool.

Continue for updates.

United Hold 'Talks' with Burnley Over Ings

Thursday, April 16

Sam Cunningham of the Daily Mail believes "United have held talks with Burnley and through a loophole in Premier League regulations are able to agree a fee and pre-contract with the player to ensure a transfer in the summer."

Cunningham writes that Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal "wants Danny Ings to form a central part of his Manchester United rebuilding" ahead of next season.

Manchester United Enter Ings Race

Monday, April 13

As reported by the Daily Telegraph's Chris Bascombe, Liverpool nearly signed the 22-year-old in the January transfer window, but they were thwarted by a Premier League regulation which would not allow the Reds to loan him back to Burnley.

However, with Ings' contract at Turf Moor set to expire in the summer, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was preparing to return for the young Englishman in the summer.

It seems, though, that United are now looking to hijack the deal, with Van Gaal said to be in the driving seat to claim Ings' signature, per Cunningham.

Despite his contract expiring in the summer, Burnley will still receive around £5 million in compensation for Ings should he move, due to his age.

But United are clearly prepared to make a deal, as Ings has had a fine season for Burnley, per Opta, and he will only improve as he gains more and more experience:

The Old Trafford outfit are looking to guarantee a summer transfer in compliance with Premier League Rule U8, which says "an English team can agree a fee and sign a pre-contract with Ings and the club which guarantees a transfer in the summer," per Cunningham.

United will likely be in need of a new striker or two in the summer, with rumours concerning the departure of Robin van Persie continuing to circulate, per the Mail on Sunday's Alex Miller.

Equally, Monaco loanee Radamel Falcao does not look set to be offered a full-time contract after underwhelming in Manchester, as discussed below by B/R UK's Sam Tighe:

Ings is a fine English prospect, and although he would not necessarily be a glamour signing for United, he is a proven goalscorer and could well develop a lethal partnership with Wayne Rooney.

Liverpool are sure to fight tooth and nail to get their man, but with United set to be in the Champions League next season, and the Reds absent, Ings would surely rather make a move to Old Trafford.

Twitter Reacts as Chris Smalling Leads Manchester Utd to Victory over Burnley

Burnley arrived at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening knowing that their last goal there came in December 1975 and their last win at the Theatre of Dreams was in September 1962.

The Clarets earned their first goal at the stadium in 40 years but were ultimately felled in a performance that belonged to super sub Chris Smalling

Before the game, most of the chatter on Twitter concerned Louis van Gaal's decision to bench Juan Mata and his continued denial of the existence of Ander Herrera...

https://twitter.com/PeoplesPerson_/status/565586345201238016

With the news that Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao were starting up front, Manchester United fans were also irked by LVG's decision to play Wayne Rooney further back once again...

In the wake of Van Gaal's embarrassing spat with Sam Allardyce, some worrying long-ball statistics also circulated before kick-off. With so much Route One action, it seemed unlikely that Rooney or any other midfielder would actually touch the ball...

Within the first few minutes, Michael Keane had a golden chance to put the visitors ahead but missed a header from around four yards. Phil Jones suffered a typical amount of abuse for failing to track the Burnley defender—and picking up an injury in the process...

https://twitter.com/tpy11/status/565598220903272448

Jones was replaced by Smalling, who nodded in a header with his first touch of the ball and started an avalanche of memes...

https://twitter.com/BBCSporf/status/565599406213574656

The Red Devils, however, only held the lead for six minutes as the Clarets applied pressure and Danny Ings equalised with an excellent diving header...

After the goal, it appeared Burnley were getting the better of the hosts, much to the delight of neutrals and the frustration of the United faithful...

Burnley were also attracting attention for their slick silver away kits...

https://twitter.com/CalmYeWest/status/565603353988976640

https://twitter.com/ThisMorningCall/status/565604131541618688

In the 37th minute, the prayers of most Manchester United fans were answered when Van Gaal remembered who Ander Herrera was and sent him on. Unfortunately, the Spaniard's appearance came at the expense of an injured Daley Blind...

https://twitter.com/jbapex/status/565607412670152704

Despite Burnley's dominance, they went into half-time losing 2-1 as Smalling stepped up once again to place another header in the back of the net...

As the hour mark passed, Smalling remained United's only viable goal threat. Falcao inevitably came under some criticism...

In the 81st minute, however, a player not named Chris finally made a breakthrough for the home side. When Scott Arfield brought Angel Di Maria down with a clumsy challenge, Van Persie stepped up from 12 yards to make it 3-1...

https://twitter.com/KaylaKnappFOX/status/565622920303894528

Burnley fan and former political bigwig Alistair Campbell was clearly not happy with the situation...

The match finished 3-1, a scoreline that surely flattered the hosts. The evening, however, surely belonged to Mr. Smalling...

Michael Keane to Burnley: Latest Loan Details, Reaction and More

Burnley have conceded just one goal in their last two English Premier League matches, but they still bolstered their defence by acquiring Michael Keane on loan from Manchester United on Monday.

The club's official Twitter account broke the news of Keane's move:

The Clarets are fresh off a promotion to the EPL after finishing second in The Championship last season. After losing their first two fixtures of the 2014-15 campaign, Burnley bounced back to draw United at nil on Saturday.

To add insult to that disappointing result for the Red Devils, they have now lost one of their hot young stars in Keane for the time being. However, it may be best for Keane's development in the long run.

Although he played rather well in a loan stint with the Blackburn Rovers earlier in 2014, Keane has still struggled to adapt to the spotlight at Old Trafford. Before the season began, it appeared Keane was excited and poised to contribute right away during a period of transition for United, per TheFA.com's Nicholas Veevers:

"I’ve heard the new manager likes to bring young players through and that’s always been the way at United. Obviously with [Ryan Giggs] staying on as his assistant that can only benefit the young players and hopefully we can get a good pre-season and a chance to prove ourselves."

A particularly underwhelming performance in a 4-0 loss to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup drew the ire of fans and seemed to help seal Keane's fate with the Red Devils for the time being.

It made WhoScored.com's favorable assessment of Keane look premature:

But the jury is still far from reaching a definitive conclusion on Keane. There is no denying that he is a top-tier talent whose future is still bright at age 21—even if his recent form has not been up to par.

While Keane is not yet ready to be a prominent contributor for United, he could get some invaluable competitive reps against top-tier competition. If he can help Burnley avoid relegation this season, it will expedite Keane's path to solidifying himself in the Red Devils starting XI.

There will be far less pressure and scrutiny on Keane as he seeks to take advantage of his immense potential. Then again, toiling away on a losing team and not seeing much bottom-line improvement could go further in besetting Keane's career trajectory.

Burnley Mascot Sent Off for Handing Assistant Referee His Glasses

Oct 26, 2013

There was a controversial decision in Saturday's top-of-the-table Championship clash between Burnley and Queens Park Rangers.

Referee Simon Hooper took the unusual step of sending off home mascot Bertie Bee.

Meet the Player Who's Outscoring Messi, Ronaldo and Falcao This Season

Nov 7, 2012

Some of Europe's most celebrated strikers have been earning their inflated wages in style so far this season.

Radamel Falcao has found the net 13 times in just 10 appearances for Atletico Madrid, all while maintaining his magnificent hairstyle. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, has Kung Fu'ed his way to 14 strikes in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt. Lionel Messi has managed 17 goals in all competitions for Barcelona, a tally only bettered in Spain by his fierce Ballon d'Or rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has hit the onion bag 18 times.

Yet none of these men can claim to be the leading striker in Europe. That honor goes to a former bricklayer playing for a mid-table Championship side.

Burnley forward Charlie Austin brought his season tally to an impressive 20 goals with his late winner at Leeds on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old is responsible for 17 of Burnley's 29 league goals in this campaign––including two hat-tricks––with his other strikes coming in the League Cup.

Not only is his prolific form unmatched in Europe, but it has earned the Clarets striker several records; he has become the quickest player to reach 20 goals in a season at his club (it's taken just 17 games; eight fewer than the previous record holder) and has already become the first player at Turf Moor to score in eight consecutive games.

Unlike Leo Messi and his superstar ilk, Austin was not nurtured by a globally dominating club from a young age. His career path is rather more humble and typical of the traditional British working class journeyman player.

After being released by Reading's academy at the age of 15 after he was deemed too small to succeed, the youngster from Berkshire started playing for local sides. In 2008, he joined Non-League Poole Town, while earning £80 per week as a bricklayer for his father's business.

His days in the construction industry, however, were cut short when he was offered a trial at Swindon Town in 2009. He impressed manager Danny Wilson and made his professional debut in October 2009.

After scoring 31 goals in one-and-a-half seasons for the Robins, Austin was snapped up by Burnley in January 2011 for a fee of £1.5 million. His wages have not been disclosed, but it's safe to say that Cristiano Ronaldo probably takes a few hours to earn what Austin makes in a week.

While it is difficult to compare the accomplishments of a striker in the Championship to those breaking down defences in Europe's most competitive leagues, Austin has now scored 74 goals in 132 games, over just three seasons as a professional. That's not bad for someone who used to lay bricks for a living.

Austin's achievements raise two big questions: Can he keep scoring this season, and does international stardom beckon?

Since the departure of strike partner Jay Rodriguez to Southampton over the summer, Austin has become Burnley's primary source of goals. Manager Sean Dyche puts his success down to his tenacious never-say-die attitude, and if it continues, there's no reason why he can't finish the campaign with more than 35 goals.

As for the question of international stardom, a call up for England's 2014 World Cup squad seems very unlikely. Yet stranger things have happened. Much like Austin, Vinnie Jones started playing semi-professional football while working on building sites. He went on to play for a handful of Premier League clubs and represented Wales in several World Cup qualifiers. A similar career path––discounting the post-football movie stardom––is not completely out of the question for Burnley's main man.

Charlie Austin's future is full of all kinds of potential, but for now, Messi and Ronaldo have some catching up to do.

Burnley Facing Battle to Keep Fletcher

May 17, 2010

One bright spot in Burnley's miserable debut season in the Premier League was the form of frontman Steven Fletcher, but the Clarets now face a battle to hang on to the Scottish forward.

The 23-year-old fired eight league goals and was named player of the year at Turf Moor but he couldn't stop Brian Laws' men being relegated back into the Championship.

Fletcher has been a real hit in the top flight and his goal tally was no mean feat when you consider he was part of a team that struggled to come to terms with life in the Premier League.

While others looked out of their depth, Fletcher impressed. His hold-up play and aerial power caught the eye of several potential suitors. For their part, the Clarets will be hoping he stays to boost Burnley's Champinonship betting odds.

He has proved to be a bargain after arriving from Hibernian last summer for £3 million. It was then that Burnley chief Owen Coyle signed Fletcher. Coyle, who is now boss at Bolton, is just one of several top-flight managers keeping track of the striker.

The Wolves are also on the hunt for a strike partner for Kevin Doyle, while Birmingham is also desperate to strengthen their forward line after they decided against buying loanee Christian Benitez.

Burnley boss Brian Laws is keen to hang on to Fletcher and the Clarets are under no pressure to sell their prize asset thanks to the parachute payments they will receive from their time in the Premier League, but if a £6 million bid is tabled they might just cash in on the striker.

Burnely 1-2 Chelsea: “Take that,” says Captain John!

Jan 30, 2010

It’s gotta be John Terry right? Isn’t that why you love football?

Terry was the toast of every newspaper in the country for a couple of days. There are lot of articles and suggestions that he shouldn’t captain the England team. These are not easy times to play a football match.

And to play an away match in a stadium like Turf Moor, especially you’e being booed for every touch, it’s definitely not easy. I must say I loved Terry’s response to bits. I was hoping that he scores and does that "finger on lips" celebration.

He did nothing of that sort. In fact, he didn’t do a proper celebration of the goal. He was visibly very angry, probably at the way things are going for him off the pitch. He wasn’t even in the mood to smile, but he responded as emphatically as possible.

So Terry’s England captaincy is in doubt? Because he was allegedly going around with an ex-teammate’s girlfriend? No wonder England has won zilch for 200 years. Why would his captaincy even become a point of discussion because of this?

You have the whole media ganging up against him and you have people like these stupid Burnley fans booing him. Why would the media and people put so much pressure on England players and coaches and surprised to see them under-perform. Probably when this section of media and general public stop being complete idiots, England would start doing better.

When Tiger Woods was going through his, I had the same stance. That’s his personal life. Still he is one of the best golfers ever to play the game and let’s respect him for that.

It’s not like Terry was the only man to have an extra-marital affairs in the whole of United Kingdom. There was a president who did @#$%^ in his office premises and stayed on to save the world. And John Terry can’t be the captain of England?

Now I don’t know it takes to be England captain. Does it have to be the Pope or Jesus Christ? See, he’s the best guy to captain England for this world cup. Anyone else is a compromise. I’m sure Capello knows that. John Terry is a huge personality and a superb captain and he just proved that today too.

Today is the perfect day for John Terry to do what Alex did and let in a poor goal. Instead he comes in and bangs the winner in the closing stages in an away match. If Terry’s captaincy is taken away for this revelation, I’m going to be so upset that I’ll go around shooting innocent people on the road.

When Burnley equalised, I must say I had butterflies in my stomach. I started to evaluating the possible scenarios that could come up after the Arsenal vs Man Utd. match. Chelsea’s response to Burnley’s goal was pretty strong. It was clear that the goal was coming.

But until Terry scored the winner, I was a bit paranoid. Turf Moor was a place were both Man Utd. and Arsenal had dropped points earlier this season. I thought Ancelotti made all the right moves in his substitutions. Except for the goal conceded, I don’t think Petr Cech was made to work too much. This was a tough away match and the significance of this result you’ll know tomorrow night.

I hope I’m not alone in this observation—our attacks are becoming quicker by the day. I’ve been observing this for some time but I wanted to confirm that there’s a clear trend in this direction. We seem to have a gained a yard of pace in all departments on the pitch. It is either because of the attacking intent or the tactics or even the fitness.

It was more evident against Sunderland and Birmingham, it was in display even today. Maybe it is because we have Malouda and Joe Cole starting for us and both these players move quickly into positions and also constantly making runs. Our attacks being slow have cost us against lesser teams that pack their defence.

Today we saw how a quick counterattack opened Burnley’s defence. It was a superb throw from Cech but I thought Joe Cole’s cross would be cleared. When Malouda clipped it in nicely, I knew Anelka wouldn’t miss those.

Also, since Ancelotti came in, I see a lot of both feet passing by the players. We are slowing improving our weak foot passing. Again, this is something that’s looks so obvious to me but you can confirm this for me.

If you happen to see the replay of the match, just notice how many times and how well passes are being made with the weaker foot of the players. I think both the frequency and accuracy as increased. This has also contributed to the quickness and unpredictability of our attacks.

Overall, it was a great football weekend. It can certainly get better. I think I’d happily take a draw in the Arsenal vs Man Utd. match tomorrow. But it’s clear that Man Utd. is going to win especially when a straight-from-league-two defender faces in-form Wayne Rooney.

On a serious note, I just want both Man Utd. and Arsenal to lose while Rooney, Fletcher, Arshavin and Fabregas get sent off due to a classless brawl over the red cards for Vermaelen and Rio Ferdinand.

I know you’re tired of me saying this, but I can’t help it. That’s truly what I want.
