Steve Angeli Announces Transfer to Syracuse From Notre Dame After Kyle McCord Exit

94th Annual Notre Dame Blue-Gold Spring Game

Steve Angeli has found his next college football home.

The former Notre Dame quarterback announced Wednesday he is transferring to Syracuse:

Angeli arrived at Notre Dame as a 3-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings, but rarely saw significant playing time during three seasons. In fact, he ended up throwing just 80 combined passes during his time with the Fighting Irish.

Yet he may be a familiar name to college football fans since he saw playing time during the team's College Football Playoff semifinal win over Penn State.

Angeli entered the game late in the second quarter when starter Riley Leonard took a hard hit that sent him to the medical tent for a concussion test. Notre Dame was facing a 10-0 deficit at the time, and it seemed like its national title odds were dire at the moment.

However, it remained aggressive and called passing plays for Angeli.

He led the team down the field for a field goal and its first score of the game while going 6-of-7 for 44 yards. It injected some life into the Fighting Irish, and Leonard ended up returning and leading them to a 27-24 victory and spot in the national title game.

While Notre Dame lost to Ohio State with the championship on the line, the performance carved out a spot in program history for Angeli, who also led the team to a Sun Bowl win over Oregon State the previous season after starter Sam Hartman opted out.

This is the second straight year Syracuse has dipped into the transfer portal for a quarterback leaving a powerhouse program.

Kyle McCord left the Buckeyes ahead of the 2024 season and ended up leading the nation with 4,779 passing yards while leading the Orange to a 10-3 record that included victories over UNLV, Miami and Washington State.

Now Syracuse will look for more success with a transfer heading into a 2025 schedule that will immediately test Angeli with an opener against Tennessee.

Arkansas Collective Reportedly Wants $200K from Madden Iamaleava After UCLA Transfer

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 02 Ole Miss at Arkansas

Quarterback Madden Iamaleava never played a down for Arkansas before reports emerged that he decided to enter the transfer portal to follow his brother, Nico, to UCLA, and the SEC program's collective reportedly wants some of its NIL money back.

Pete Nakos of On 3 reported Wednesday that the Arkansas Edge collective is asking for approximately $200,000 back from the signal-caller for violating his agreement.

This comes after Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yuracheck released a statement Tuesday addressing potential agreement violations:

"I have spoken with the leadership team at Arkansas Edge and expressed my support in their pursuit to enforce their rights under any agreement violated by our student-athletes moving forward," he said. "We appreciate Edge's investment in our student-athletes and acknowledge the enforcement of these agreements is vital in our new world of college athletics. We look forward to continued dialogue with all parties in resolving these matters."

Amanda Christovich of Front Office Sports reported Arkansas Edge is attempting to enforce "buyout" clauses in the contracts it agreed to with Iamaleava and others.

However, Christovich noted the enforcement in today's college athletic world is trickier than at the professional level and talked to lawyers who said it partially depends on the specific language included in the deal.

It is another development, though, as the Iamaleava family continues to make headlines in the NIL era.

Nico Iamaleava ended up leaving Tennessee for the Bruins after reports of contract negotiations and a missed practice with the Volunteers.

"Man, listen, it's the state of college football," Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said on The Vol Network radio broadcast (h/t Grant Ramey of On3). "At the end of the day, no one is ever bigger than the program. That includes me, too. We've got an opportunity. We've got a bunch of guys that will give their all for Tennessee.

"We move forward. Got a great group. Let's go compete."

As for Madden Iamaleava, he was a 4-star prospect and the No. 22 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He chose the Razorbacks but is now apparently headed to UCLA and following in his brother's footsteps.

Arkansas is reportedly fighting back and wants some money in return, so this likely isn't the last fans will hear of the situation.

Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin Wants CFP to Change to 16-Team Bracket Format

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 02 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl - Duke vs Ole Miss

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is lobbying for expansion to the College Football Playoff.

"The system doesn't have it right," he said to USA Today's Blake Toppmeyer. "I don't think anybody, after watching the games, would say those are the best 12 teams in America. In my opinion, that's what it should be: You should be getting the best teams."

Kiffin went on to say the field should expand to 16 teams because it would widen the number of fanbases emotionally invested in the playoff.

"Forget giving (automatic bids)," he said. "Figure out the best teams. Let an educated committee figure that out with analytics."

Kiffin is notably advocating for a format that would've benefited his team last year. Ole Miss finished 14th in the CFP selection committee rankings, and the Rebels watched 16th-place Clemson punch a ticket to the playoff by winning the ACC.

Kiffin sounded off once it became clear they weren't going to move up into the top 12:

Playoff expansion is probably inevitable because more games means more money for all of the stakeholders. Adding four more teams is unlikely to bring the kind of satisfaction that Kiffin is suggesting, though.

Ad Placeholder

One idea behind increasing the number of participants from four to 12 was that it might finally eliminate or minimize arguments over who missed out.

To use Ole Miss as an example, a team that lost three games seemingly forfeited the right to claim it deserves to contend for a national title. If the Rebels had beaten Kentucky or Florida, they almost certainly would've been playoff-bound.

Ad Placeholder

The same is true for Alabama, which lost to Vanderbilt and mustered only three points against a pedestrian Oklahoma team. Miami watched its CFP hopes evaporate when it lost to Syracuse in its final game.

The fact that the Rebels, Crimson Tide and Hurricanes all missed the cutoff for justified reasons didn't stop their fanbases from feeling a sense of injustice.

The only real change in a 16-team format is that a different group of programs will be arguing they were snubbed. At the end of the day, there's never going to be a perfect formula to crown a national champion in college football.

People have been futilely searching for one ever since the inception of the Bowl Championship Series in 1997. The only constant through multiple postseason iterations is that nobody seems satisfied.

Ohio State AD Calls for CFB Calendar Change at CFP Meetings, Cites 'Disruptions'

Ohio State Buckeyes Celebrate NCAA Football Championship
Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork

Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork is pushing CFP leaders to adjust the college football regular-season schedule.

Bjork brought up the subject during CFP leaders' annual review meeting in Dallas, according to ESPN's Heather Dinich.

One of the meeting's central questions regarded the format of the next CFP, per The Athletic's Chris Vannini. Bjork told Dinich answering that question involved discussing the shape of the regular season.

"We've had so many disruptions over the last five-plus years that I think the time is now to not be reactive, be proactive," he said.  "When we had this setting here with the commissioners, our job was to provide feedback on what was it like to go through the 12-team playoff ... but it all gets impacted by the calendar.

"I felt it was important to lay that out with everyone in the room to say, separate from the CFP process, if we don't fix our calendar as an industry, then we're going to continue to have unintended consequences."

According to Dinich, Bjork told commissioners attending the meeting about Ohio State players' experience competing in a national championship game that took place on Jan. 20, weeks after classes began on Jan. 6.

He said the schedule caused the Buckeyes to run into issues regarding NCAA rules limiting practice time to 20 hours per week during the academic year.

The transfer portal, meanwhile, opened from Dec. 9 to Dec. 28, during which time the Buckeyes entered the first round of the playoff.

Bjork said that moving the fall transfer portal to May "makes the most sense" given new NCAA NIL rules could kick in on July 1 pending approval of the House v. NCAA settlement.

The 2025-26 college football season is set to begin Aug. 23. Part of the upcoming CFP schedule was announced Tuesday, with the quarterfinals set to begin on Dec. 31 and the national championship game scheduled for Jan. 19.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported last August that CFP leaders had recently "seriously discussed the prospect of shifting up by a week the entire season."

The goal would be to move the first round of the expanded CFP to the second week of December, according to the report. Those games currently take place in the third week of December, paving the way for the New Year's Eve quarterfinal and the late January title game.

That would involve working out new contracts with both conference championship game venues and broadcast partners, Dellenger noted. Vannini reported that executives from ESPN, which holds CFP broadcast rights through 2031-32, were present at the CFP meetings this week.

College Football Playoff Announces Dates, Times, Full Schedule for 2025-26 Bowl Games

The quarterfinals for next year's College Football Playoff will kick off with the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31.

The CFP announced the full schedule for the final three rounds. Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will host the title game on Jan. 19.

The biggest news from Tuesday is that the Rose Bowl got moved up one hour from its usual start time of 5 p.m. ET.

Beyond coveting a New Year's Day slot, officials for the event prioritized a specific kickoff time so that sunset in Pasadena, California, closely aligns with the break in between the third and fourth quarters.

Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. More often than not, though, the Rose Bowl delivers some of the most striking visuals in college football.

A 5 p.m. start wasn't great for television partners and fans attending the last of the four quarterfinals. Before it was rescheduled, the Sugar Bowl was originally slated to get underway at 8:45 p.m. Nobody wants a major bowl game going much past midnight on the East Coast.

"All three bowls shifting their start times allows us to place each game in an ideal window on New Year's Day and provide the optimal viewing experience," CFP executive director Rich Clark said. "New Year's Day and college football are synonymous with each other, and these changes only strengthen that relationship."

A lot of college football comes down to celebrating small traditions that would be silly in a different context. The Rose Bowl sunset certainly falls into that category.

For "The Granddaddy of Them All" to remain part of the playoff structure, some give and take was required in this case.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 09 Cincinnati at Pitt

The University of Cincinnati announced Tuesday the death of freshman offensive lineman Jeremiah Kelly.

"The Bearcats football family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of this outstanding young man," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "In the short time Jeremiah has spent with our team, he has made a real impact, both on the field and in our locker room. My prayers are with the Kelly family and those who had the pleasure of knowing Jeremiah."

Athletic director John Cunningham called Kelly's death a "heartbreaking loss."

"All of us at UC send our love and prayers to the Kelly family and we will do everything that we can to support them and our Bearcats student-athletes in the difficult days and weeks ahead," he said.

The Big 12 also issued a statement:

Kelly was a 3-star recruit and the No. 65 overall player in the state of Ohio in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2025 class. A graduate of Avon High School, he was an all-conference honoree as the school lifted a Division II title, its first ever.

Kelly graduated from high school early in order to enroll at Cincinnati in January.

Andrew Luck Plays QB In Video From Stanford CFB Practice After Taking GM Role

Stanford v Oregon

Stanford University football general manager Andrew Luck took part in some on-field work at spring practice on Monday.

It was a familiar position for Luck, who played quarterback for three seasons at Stanford, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting in both 2010 and 2011.

Luck was named the Stanford football GM in November, continuing the recent trend of major collegiate sports programs hiring former players to steer the ship.

Despite throwing for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns in 2018, Luck shockingly announced his retirement prior to the 2019 season at the age of 29.

Luck stayed out of the spotlight for the next few years before resurfacing last year to take the GM job at his alma mater.

The Cardinal were a perennial top team and national title contender during Luck's playing days, but things have dropped off significantly in recent years.

Stanford has posted a 3-9 record in four consecutive seasons and it has not played in a bowl game since 2018.

One of Luck's first major decisions as GM was the firing of head coach Troy Taylor, who went 3-9 in each of his two seasons at the helm.

Per ESPN's Kyle Bonagura and Xuan Thai, Taylor was fired in March after an outside investigation determined he "bullied and belittled female athletic staffers, sought to have an NCAA compliance officer removed after she warned him of rules violations and repeatedly made 'inappropriate' comments to another woman about her appearance."

Luck hired Frank Reich to serve as Stanford's head coach on an interim basis, giving him a trusted veteran coach to collaborate with.

Reich was Luck's head coach with the Colts in 2018, which was Luck's final NFL season before his retirement.

Luck will look to get the Cardinal back on track in 2025 with their season-opening game being a road tilt against Hawai'i on Aug. 23.
