Borussia Dortmund's Young Core Needs to Start Delivering Under Peter Stoger

In the end, the climax of Peter Bosz's tenure at Borussia Dortmund was little surprise.

Given his reign lasted a mere 15 Bundesliga games, it's remarkable to think his removal from office had seemed like a matter of time for a while and had felt inevitable ever since his team surrendered a 4-0 lead in the Revierderby with Schalke 04 on November 25.

Peter Stoger, who formed part of Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke's original shortlist for the job in June before Bosz was appointed, is a left-field choice to some, especially given his struggles with FC Cologne this season. The 2-0 win he oversaw at Mainz on his Tuesday night debut on the BVB bench was his first in the Bundesliga this season.

Yet the 51-year-old Austrian, as well as having piqued the interest of the BVB board before and feeling like he fits the club's image of friendly, earthy and passionate, should fulfil an immediate need too. From his time at Austria Vienna and most of his time in Cologne, he is renowned as an effective defensive organiser, which few would accuse his predecessor of being.

It had seemed, especially in the wildly successful early weeks of the season, as if Bosz was fulfilling a need.

The reason he seemed a good fit (and why many overlooked the fact the club's No. 1 choice, Lucien Favre, was a radically different type of coach) was his strong work with Ajax's impressive stable of youngsters during his year there. They didn't manage to close out the Eredivisie title, but their run to the final of the Europa League was exhilarating and quite unprecedented for a Dutch club in the modern era.

Davinson Sanchez, Bertrand Traore, Hakim Ziyech, Kasper Dolberg and Amin Younes are just a sample of the players aged 24 and under who developed rapidly under Bosz in Amsterdam. The first two flew the nest in big-money transfers and are flourishing for larger European clubs (certainly by modern markers).

Today, Ziyech is Ajax's best player, Dolberg continues to attract attention and Younes has even made it to the Germany squad, which would have been a pipe dream in his Borussia Monchengladbach days.

So, if there were doubts about Bosz's hardly trophy-packed coaching CV overall, there had justifiably been a sense he could fit in with the modus operandi of Dortmund. Their model of hoovering up young talent to secure the future and to compensate for inevitable big-name departures has gathered pace in recent years, particularly in the shape of signings such as Ousmane Dembele, Raphael Guerreiro, Mahmoud Dahoud and Alexander Isak.

Bosz's regime got off to a difficult start when he had to endure the standoff that eventually saw Dembele join Barcelona; an unsettling saga for the squad and, despite the tremendous profit made for the club, a deal which deprived him of the team's sharpest attacking conduit from the previous season.

Christian Pulisic's sensational start to the campaign, scoring in the Super Cup match with Bayern Munich and in the Bundesliga opener against Wolfsburg, allowed the sporting impact of that to be strictly minimised.

Since then, the results for Dortmund's best young talents have been mixed. There has been such an intense focus on Bosz's tactical setup—understandably so, given the extent to which that high defensive line shaped the opening Champions League defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid—that the players have almost got away scot-free.

Of course, much of Stoger's success or otherwise will depend on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and—once he has returned to fitness having enjoyed a good season thus far—Mario Gotze.

Yet it's equally clear that for Dortmund to develop, the new coach must work on getting the team's youthful core to flourish, led by Pulisic but also including Julian Weigl, Dahoud, Guerreiro and Maximilian Philipp.

The 23-year-old Philipp, who many considered overpriced when he arrived from Freiburg in the summer for an estimated €20 million (per Kicker, via Get German Football News), has settled nicely, adjusting to the team's rhythm and scoring six times in nine Bundesliga starts.

Dahoud is yet to get an extended run in the XI following his transfer from Gladbach, and Guerreiro has only just returned from a long-term ankle problem (though he scored in the derby with Schalke).

Weigl's struggle for form since coming back from a broken ankle has been one of the biggest clouds hanging over Dortmund's season. Opposition teams have purposely targeted the 22-year-old throughout this season and he—one of the ones more exposed by Bosz's tactics—has struggled to cope.

When Dortmund were at their best under Thomas Tuchel, Weigl was always at the centre of it. Everything went through him.

This season, his average number of passes per game has dropped significantly, per WhoScored.com, from 67.6 per match in last season's Bundesliga to 44.4 immediately following the weekend's fixtures.

In a side whose confidence has taken a real battering, he is one of the players who looks most vulnerable. In Tuesday night's game at Mainz, with Stoger switching to 4-3-3 and not required to press so aggressively, Weigl looked more like his old self, playing 71 passes at a 95.8 per cent success rate.

This matters to Dortmund in two ways. Firstly, a firing Weigl would be crucial to recovering their form. Secondly, looking forward, he is one of the club's most valuable assets, with Manchester City perhaps the most frequently linked of the major clubs credited with interest in the midfielder, per Richard Fay of the Manchester Evening News.

There is a lot riding on the rest of this season. Dortmund have a hard-won reputation as a borderline elite-level club where the best talented youngsters can still get game time.

It is a go-to destination for the best young talent and has helped them sign the coveted likes of Dahoud, Isak and Jadon Sancho in recent times. For this reputation to endure, they need to continue to qualify for the Champions League—Stoger's premier objective—and to continue to provide an environment where those young players make a contribution to that.

The other valuable chip in play is that of Pulisic's future. He signed a new deal to stay at the Westfalenstadion at the start of the year, but it was hardly a long-term commitment, taking him through to the summer of 2020. If his form is good for the rest of the season then he and BVB are likely to have a decision to make: extend the contract or sell.

Watzke has insisted Pulisic is with the club for the long haul, but he also said Henrikh Mkhitaryan would stay in 2016 weeks before he was sold to Manchester United, per ESPN (h/t Fox Sports). What Dortmund want and what proves possible may be two different things.

That Stoger has a job on his hands in the immediate, despite his good start, is news to nobody. Yet his work is about preserving an ideal as well as a sporting trajectory, and in that sense he is being trusted with a lot.

Borussia Dortmund Fire Peter Bosz, Name Peter Stoger New Manager

Borussia Dortmund sacked Peter Bosz on Sunday and appointed Peter Stoger as the club's new manager.

BVB took to Twitter to announce the news, which didn't come as a surprise:

Dortmund sit in seventh place in the Bundesliga standings and are in the midst of a nightmare run. Die Schwarzgelben haven't won a match since October and have lost five of their past seven fixtures across all competitions. They also dropped out of the UEFA Champions League and didn't win a single match in the group stage.

Bosz was only appointed manager in June, replacing Thomas Tuchel, but it quickly became apparent the Dutchman was a bad fit. While he was put in a difficult situation, working with a young squad and dealing with injuries, the team's persistent defensive issues were often his fault.

Football writer Lars Pollmann approved of the choice of Stoger as his successor:

https://twitter.com/LarsPollmann/status/939807482838507520

Club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed BVB met with Stoger during the summer, when he was still in charge of Cologne:

https://twitter.com/LarsPollmann/status/939819435032023040

Stoger had an excellent run with Cologne, but the club made a poor start to the season, and he was sacked in December.

Dortmund face a battle to get back into contention for a Champions League spot next year, but by making the change now, they have given themselves options for the January transfer window.

While BVB are unlikely to spend big, they need to bring in a veteran defender who can shore things up at the back, and they can now make sure said player is someone with whom the new coach wants to work.

Borussia Dortmund Reportedly Ready to Sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly ready to cash in on star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after his turbulent beginning to the season.

According to Bild (h/t Will Griffee of MailOnline), the Gabon striker is edging closer to the Westfalenstadion exit door, with Chelsea and Liverpool said to be two clubs interested in signing him.

The club suspended Aubameyang for disciplinary reasons earlier in the season, and he was sent off against rivals Schalke 04  on Saturday with his team 4-2 ahead. Having been four goals to the good, Dortmund ended up drawing 4-4.

As Griffee noted, key figures at Dortmund didn't hold back when they were asked about Aubameyang's conduct in the Revierderby.

Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller said the striker had "done a stupid thing," while manager Peter Bosz went as far as saying Aubameyang had "ruined everything" by getting sent off.

Saturday's game was eventful for the forward, who netted the opening goal.

Aubameyang has established himself as one of the deadliest goalscorers in football since arriving at Dortmund in 2013.

While this campaign has been blemished by some disciplinary issues, the Gabon international has still been prolific. His goal on Saturday was his 11th in the Bundesliga from 12 appearances this term, and he struck 56 times in the German top flight over the previous two campaigns.

Evidently, if he were to move on, his departure would leave a massive void at the point of the Dortmund attack, where Aubameyang offers deadly finishing and blistering pace.

With that in mind, there would be a number of clubs ready to snap him up if Dortmund were ready to cash in. As previously mentioned, Premier League sides have long been linked with signing Aubameyang, who recently told RMC Sport he was "disappointed" a move to Real Madrid failed to go through in the summer (h/t Jamie Wright of MailOnline).

Dortmund have sold many key players in recent years and have done well finding replacements. Aubameyang himself assumed the centre-forward berth after Robert Lewandowski's departure to Bayern Munich in 2014.

Even so, there aren't many strikers as devastating as the former Saint-Etienne sharpshooter when he's in full flight. It means Dortmund have a massive decision to make ahead of the January transfer window or at the end of the campaign.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Held out of Dortmund Team for 'Disciplinary Reasons'

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not be part of the squad for the game against Stuttgart on Friday due to "disciplinary reasons."

The club put out the following message on their Twitter account on Thursday:

"Aubameyang has been removed from the squad for tomorrow's match for disciplinary reasons," read the post, per Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC.

No further explanation was provided by the Bundesliga side, who have recently relinquished top spot in the German top flight to rivals Bayern Munich after a difficult run of form.

Bundesliga writer Lars Pollmann speculated that the offence committed by Aubameyang is a severe one and noted the players haven't been at the training ground too much lately:

https://twitter.com/LarsPollmann/status/931205207475724290

As we can see courtesy of Sport, the forward spent some time off during the international break visiting former team-mate Ousmane Dembele in Barcelona:

As noted above, this is not the first time BVB's star striker has been suspended by the football club.

In November last year, Aubameyang went to Milan and broke a curfew, meaning he sat out the side's clash with Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League.

When he has been on the field, the 28-year-old has not been at his blistering best, with his own slump in form coinciding with that of the team's. He's gone five matches without a goal, with his previous strikes coming in October's 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig.

However, as noted by WhoScored.com last month, Aubameyang has been among the most prolific players in European football for a long time:

So while he's not been at his most predatory as of late, there's no doubt Dortmund will be worse off without the searing pace and clinical finishing of their star striker.

Peter Bosz's team have been on a torrid run as of late, with the only win in their last seven matches coming against Magdeburg in the German Cup. It means they've slipped down the table and handed the title initiative back to rivals Bayern Munich.

Dortmund have some massive games coming up, too. After Friday's clash, they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League before a showdown with their local rivals Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga.

When Aubameyang returned from suspension a year ago, he netted four times in the next game. BVB supporters will be hopeful he can make a similar recovery after this latest discretion.

Borussia Dortmund Reportedly Ready to Offer Football Trial to Usain Bolt

Borussia Dortmund are said to be ready to offer Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt the chance to show what he can offer as a footballer.

As reported by Spencer Morgan of the MailOnline, Bolt has made it clear in the past that he is keen on pursuing his ambition of playing professional football, and the Bundesliga side are reported to be one of a number of outfits that have shown interest.

When asked about the possibility by Reviersport (h/t Morgan), Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said talks will be held between Puma, which sponsors both the club and the former sprinter.

"Our word is our bond," he said. "I will meet [Puma CEO] Bjorn Gulden this week. And that's on our list."

Bolt retired from athletics after the World Championships in the summer, leaving behind a legacy as the greatest sprinter of all time. The Jamaican won eight Olympic sprint golds and is the world-record holder in both the 100-metre and 200-metre distances.

While he's now 31, it appears Bolt still believes he has a lot to conquer in the sporting world before he retires altogether.

"It's a personal goal, I don't care what people really think about it," Bolt said of his desire to play professional football on Sunday, per Morgan. "I am not going to lie to myself, if I feel I can't do it, I am going to say 'forget this.' I am not going to embarrass myself."

Bolt added that Dortmund told him "the invitation is always open," and he will now concentrate on "getting over my injury and into shape."

The Jamaican's willingness to try his hand at new things extended to motor racing on Sunday, as he joined Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton for a spin around the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, at the United States Grand Prix. Per journalist Phil Duncan, it was quite the experience:

Bolt is an avid Manchester United supporter and is passionate about the beautiful game. In September he told the team's official website former Red Devils forward Ruud van Nistelrooy is the player that attracted him to the club.

In the past he's proved his versatility in other sports too. Per BBC Sport, Bolt played in a charity cricket match in 2009 against West Indies great Chris Gayle. In it, the sprinter hit a six off the cricketer's bowling, before Bolt bowled the devastating batsman later in the game.

Marco Reus Says He's Considering Leaving Borussia Dortmund in 2019

Injury-hit Marco Reus has revealed he could leave current club Borussia Dortmund when his contract expires in 2019 but does not know where he will end up

Per GQ (via Allan Valente of Sky Sports) the creative German midfielder—currently sidelined until early next year due to a cruciate ligament tear—has been linked in the past to Premier League clubs, and he said he could consider a move away from BVB in the future:

"There are four or five international clubs who interest me. On May 31, 2019, I will turn 30. That would be my last big contract and a final opportunity to try something different.

"I have to be honest and fair and say I don't know where I'll end up. At the moment, I'm very happy in Dortmund and not thinking about what happens after 2019. But of course, the time will come and then I will sit down and calmly make a decision."

Reus, 28, is a hugely talented attacking player and able to operate through the middle or on the flanks.

Since joining Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012, he has scored 56 goals and provided 34 assists in 125 Bundesliga appearances, per WhoScored.com.

However, he has been plagued by injury. Among his numerous spells on the sidelines, he missed Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup win because of an ankle problem as well as UEFA Euro 2016 due to a groin issue.

BVB have been forced to cope without him on numerous occasions and arguably there could be a benefit for all involved if Reus opted for a change of scenery by moving to a new club.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Rules out Premier League Transfer Amid Rumours

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Manchester City and the Premier League in general, saying he's happy with the German outfit.

The Gabon international was linked with several European powerhouses over the summer, but Aubameyang suggested to French programme Telefoot he was actually closest to joining a Chinese Super League club (h/t Goal's Robin Bairner):

“Manchester City? In fact, I've never been attracted to the Premier League. This is a personal opinion.

“I thought about China, which seems normal, but it still lacks professionalism, unfortunately.

“I’m very happy to have stayed in Dortmund. It’s like a family to me.”

Aubameyang ranks as one of the most coveted finishers in Europe and entered last summer's transfer window on the back of his most prolific season to date, where he scored 40 goals across all competitions.

That scoring success led Rob Draper of the Mail on Sunday to pose that Aubameyang could be a snip, and a record of 13 goals in only 11 games this season suggests there is major value to be had in his signature:

However, while the 28-year-old may state he's content in Dortmund, Aubameyang recently told French radio station RMC Sport (h/t MailOnline's Jaime Wright) just how saddened he was to not get his dream move to Real Madrid:

"I have no more dreams. I will not talk about Real Madrid anymore. I am happy at Borussia Dortmund, I feel like other clubs don't want to come close to sign me.

"People underestimate me but I will prove my worth. I am frustrated because Dortmund told me I could leave last summer. It didn't happen and I am disappointed but I am also happy here. It's not a problem, I'll keep working hard."

French newspaper L'Equipe (h/t Eurosport) provided quotes from the forward in February 2016, when he said it was a "childhood dream" to join Real and that he'd promised his grandfather he would represent Los Blancos.

Aubameyang recently sent Chelsea fans into a frenzy after posting a Snapchat alongside Blues defender David Luiz, as shown by Bundesliga content manager Alex Chaffer:

But a move to England now seems implausible for the Gabonese gem, who has gone from strength to strength at the Westfalenstadion since joining from Saint-Etienne in 2013.

The Citizens and their Premier League peers may be able to cross Aubameyang off their list of potential recruits for the time being, with the player seemingly set on featuring in climates other than England's top flight.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Says He No Longer Dreams of Real Madrid Move

Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang no longer dreams of moving to Real Madrid and has revealed he held talks with Paris Saint-Germain during the summer.

The Gabon international spoke about his future and why he didn't leave BVB during the summer in a recent interview with RMC (h/t FourFourTwo):

"I have no dream. I shall no longer speak of Madrid. They don't want me. This is not a problem. I move on. I am well in Dortmund.

"I feel that the clubs don't want to go too far [with me]. I'm inevitably frustrated. We had an agreement with Borussia that I could leave. It didn't happen. It is a disappointment. But I'm also happy to stay. ...

"At the beginning of June I met [PSG president] Nasser [Al-Khelaifi]. It was before Antero Henrique's arrival. And when Henrique came to PSG, they decided that they wouldn't take me.

"Milan offered me something. I was very interested by the project. It did not happen for many reasons."

The 28-year-old was linked with a return to AC Milan throughout the summer and popped up in PSG rumours, but he stayed at BVB.

He has spoken at length about his desire to play for Real, explaining to Soccer Laduma's David Kappel how his grandfather lived near Madrid and it was his dream to see him sign for the La Liga giants.

With Dortmund's shift towards younger attacking options, many assumed Aubameyang would be sold in the summer. The speedster put together a fantastic 2016-17 campaign that saw him beat Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski to the Bundesliga top scorer's title.

Here are some of his highlights:

Karim Benzema's contract extension ruled out Real's need for a new starter at the striker position, and PSG's moves for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe ended his chances of a transfer to the French capital. Milan spent heavily in the summer but opted for Andre Silva to lead the attack.

Andriy Yarmolenko Transfers to Borussia Dortmund, Agrees to 4-Year Contract

Dynamo Kiev captain Andriy Yarmolenko has completed a move to Borussia Dortmund, taking his career beyond the borders of Ukraine for the first time.

The club presented the player on Monday:

According to Squawka News, he has signed a four-year deal.

Fans may remember Yarmolenko from Kiev's meeting with Everton in the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League, where the Ukraine international put together a fantastic performance and scored in a 5-2 win.

The 27-year-old has been one of Dynamo's most consistent performers the past few years and has also done well for the national team.

Here's a look at some of his highlights:

Yarmolenko is a bit of an enigma. Casual fans may be unfamiliar with the player, but scouts and pundits have been trying to determine his perfect position and fit in any system for years.

Bleacher Report's Lars Pollmann is unsure how he'll fare, but he was excited with his arrival, nonetheless:

https://twitter.com/LarsPollmann/status/902148801359699969

Yarmolenko could be one of the biggest value signings of the window, but he carries a certain risk. The Ukrainian has never played for a team outside of his country of birth and will be in for quite the culture shock when he faces defenders of an entirely different calibre.

Fans shouldn't be too quick to judge, as it might take some time for him to adapt to his new surroundings and the new league. Yarmolenko has all of the physical tools to be a success, so in this case, patience will be a virtue.
