A highly expected result became a reality on Monday as Baltimore Orioles star Gunnar Henderson and Arizona Diamondbacks star Corbin Carroll were named American and National League Rookies of the Year.

Henderson and Carroll dominated the voting ballots, with both of them being unanimously selected for their respective awards. It's just the fifth time in MLB history that both Rookies of the Year were unanimous selections.

Both Henderson and Carroll were widely regarded as the favorites to earn the top rookie honors in their respective leagues after they emerged as superstars during the 2023 season.

Henderson, who beat out Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas and Cleveland Guardians pitcher Tanner Bibee for the award, established himself as one of the faces of an Orioles team that finished with the best record in the AL at 101-61. He led all rookies with 28 home runs and 66 extra-base hits while adding 82 RBI and ranking first on the Orioles with 100 runs scored.

The No. 1 prospect entering the season, Henderson was also outstanding in the field, ranking third among AL shortstops with 10 defensive runs saved despite making just 64 starts at the position. He made 68 starts at third base and also saw time as designated hitter, earning the AL Silver Slugger Award for utility players. He's the first Orioles player to be named Rookie of the Year since Gregg Olson in 1989.

Carroll also seemed like a no-brainer to take home some hardware after a magical rookie campaign that included Arizona's first playoff appearance since 2017 and a trip to the 2023 World Series. He beat out New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder James Outman to become the first player in Diamondbacks franchise history to win the NL award.

Carroll recorded 25 home runs and 54 stolen bases this season, becoming the first rookie in MLB history to put together a 25-50 campaign. He led the D-Backs with 161 hits and a .285 batting average while also adding 76 RBI. He brought excitement to the Diamondbacks with his blazing baserunning and versatility on defense while playing multiple outfield positions.

The Diamondbacks knew what they had in Carroll early, signing the 23-year-old to an eight-year, $111 million contract extension in March. He more than lived up to the deal and will likely be an NL MVP candidate for years to come.

Next up for the MLB awards announcements will be Manager of the Year, which will be unveiled on Tuesday.

Diamondbacks, Torey Lovullo Agree to Contract Extension After 2023 World Series Run

After making a surprising run to the 2023 World Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks are rewarding manager Torey Lovullo.

The team announced on Wednesday that it has agreed to terms with Lovullo on a contract extension. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com noted that the extension will keep Lovullo in the fold through the 2026 season.

This marks the second extension Lovullo has received this year, as the Diamondbacks signed him to a one-year extension through 2024 in June following their strong start to the season.

Lovullo's deal comes after Arizona extended the contract of general manager Mike Hazen through 2028. Hazen said at the time that he planned to extend Lovullo after the completion of the team's playoff run, which came to an end by losing to the Texas Rangers in five games in the World Series.

"I think he's always been an incredible game manager," Hazen said before Game 1 of the World Series. "I think he does a great job in our clubhouse, relationships with our players. I think that has taken on a new level."

The longest-tenured manager in Diamondbacks history, Lovullo was hired after the 2016 season. He was named 2017 NL Manager of the Year after leading Arizona to a Wild Card berth in his first year at the helm. After a five-year playoff drought, he led the Diamondbacks to an 84-78 record this season to earn the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

Now, Lovullo will try to build on that success as Arizona prepares for the 2024 season and beyond.

MLB Rumors: Red Sox FA Justin Turner Tops Diamondbacks' Wishlist After World Series

As they look to retool following a disappointing loss in the World Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly looking into adding former Boston Red Sox third baseman Justin Turner in free agency, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

Nightengale reported that the organization is "desperately" trying to bring in a third baseman and the 38-year-old is apparently at the top of their wish list.

Turner—a former World Series Champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers—exercised his opt out clause after spending just one season with the Red Sox.

While it was a down year for Boston, finishing last in the AL East, Turner ended up being a pretty nice addition and contributor throughout the season, hitting .276/.345/.455 with 23 homers and 96 RBI—a career-best mark for him.

Turner also finished the season with a .800 OPS.

The Diamondbacks would essentially be replacing one 38-year-old, former All-Star for another as they signed Evan Longoria to a one-year, $4 million contract ahead of the 2023 campaign. He is set to hit free agency this offseason.

Arizona didn't exactly get what it was hoping for in the four-time All-Star as Longoria hit just .223/.295/.422 with 11 homers and 28 RBIs in 73 games. He was particularly ineffective in the postseason, producing eight hits and four RBI in 16 games.

While Turner may be past his prime, the two-time All-Star will bring some much-needed experience and championship pedigree to a squad that went on a surprise run through a loaded NL playoff field.

He'll also be a relatively cheap option as he signed a two-year, $21.7 million deal with Boston last offseason.

D-Backs Slammed by Fans for Pitching in 2023 MLB World Series Game 4 Loss to Rangers

On Monday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks seemingly forgot how to hit. On Tuesday, it was the pitching staff that lost the plot.

The Texas Rangers hammered the D-Backs in Game 4 of the World Series, 11-7, taking a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

The Diamondbacks came into the game with the intention of letting their bullpen handle the entire night, much as they did in a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the NLCS.

But the Rangers took a jackhammer to that plan. Four different Arizona relievers gave up a run or more, while Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Jonah Heim each homered on the night and Semien finished with five RBI:

And more than a few MLB fans and pundits alike were happy to see the Diamondbacks get punished for utilizing a bullpen game in the World Series, alongside questioning some other pitching decisions along the way:

https://twitter.com/SteeloCity3/status/1719522215136297044

It should be noted that the Rangers also have been incredible on the road in October, winning 10 straight games away from home this postseason. And they continue to absolutely rake, with their sixth postseason game scoring seven or more runs.

But from Arizona's perspective, losing two straight games at home—one in which their offense only mustered one run, and the other in which the planned bullpen game backfired immensely—is nothing short of disastrous.

Yes, the Diamondbacks will now have their three starters the've utilized throughout the postseason—Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly and Brandon Pfaadt—available for the next three games, depending on how long this series goes.

The Rangers will be without starting pitcher Max Scherzer and Adolis García for the rest of the World Series, a huge blow for them.

And the D-Backs deserve some credit for not folding, putting up seven runs in total after facing an early 10-0 deficit, which forced the Rangers to utilize a fair amount of relievers. Momentum's validity is murky at best, but if there's any truth to its power, Arizona's offensive revival may have at least swung some back in their favor.

Still, this was a chance for the Diamondbacks to even the series and press the pitching advantage they would have had going forward.

Instead, the Rangers—needing just one more win in this series—may never have to solve the Game 7 pitching conundrum that Scherzer's injury left them. The Diamondbacks, left with zero margin for error, are now just hoping to get this series back to Texas.

So no, it wasn't a good night in the desert. Make that two in a row.

Corbin Carroll, Diamondbacks' Offense Stump MLB Fans in World Series Loss to Rangers

The Arizona Diamondbacks' crowd was raucous from the start. The Arizona Diamondbacks' pitching was good enough to win. And the Arizona Diamondbacks' fielding was solid.

But the Arizona Diamondbacks' offense was missing in action.

Arizona lost its home-field advantage and fell behind 2-1 in the 2023 World Series thanks to a 3-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in Game 3 on Monday at Chase Field. Now the Diamondbacks will have to win at least one game in Texas if they are going to capture their first championship since the 2001 campaign.

It seemed like the offense was going to seize early momentum and ride it in front of the home fans when Christian Walker doubled to start the bottom of the second inning and Tommy Pham followed with a single, but Adolis García threw Walker out at home after he ran through a stop sign.

The game went downhill from there for the Diamondbacks, and the disappointing showing from Corbin Carroll and the rest of the offense drew plenty of reaction on social media:

https://twitter.com/PhoenixWagner35/status/1719163826493644811

It didn't take long for that failed chance in the second inning off veteran starter Max Scherzer to backfire from Arizona's perspective. The Rangers pushed three runs across the board in the top of the third off an RBI single from Marcus Semien and a two-run homer by Corey Seager.

Those runs off starter Brandon Pfaadt were it for Texas thanks to a strong bullpen effort from Miguel Castro, Kyle Nelson, Luis Frías and Andrew Saalfrank. The door also swung wide open for a comeback for the Diamondbacks when Scherzer exited with back tightness after just three innings and 36 pitches, which unexpectedly forced Jon Gray into the game.

Yet the home team didn't take advantage.

Gray allowed a single hit in three scoreless innings, and Arizona's only run came on an RBI single from Geraldo Perdomo off Aroldis Chapman in the eighth. José Leclerc shut the door in the ninth, and the Rangers are now two wins away from their first title in franchise history.

Those two wins will come quickly if Arizona's offense doesn't perform better than it did Monday.

Tommy Pham Asked D-Backs Manager to Have Jace Peterson Pinch-Hit in World Series G2

Tommy Pham was on the brink of history Saturday.

But with a World Series first 5-for-5 game on the line, the 35-year-old veteran opted to share the joy and give Jace Peterson an opportunity to pinch-hit in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 9-1 win over the Texas Rangers in Game 2 of the Fall Classic.

Commenting on an Instagram post that pointed out that Pham had a chance to make history, Pham emphasized that he wanted to give Peterson—a longtime journeyman—a moment in the spotlight.

"I asked [Diamondbacks manger Torey Lovullo] can Jace hit for me," Pham wrote. "I wanted my dawg to get his first World Series at-bat."

Pham continued his strong postseason in dominant fashion, going 4-for-4 on Saturday with two runs scored as Arizona tied the series back up at one game apiece.

He wound up surrendering his ninth-inning at-bat to Peterson, who grounded into a fielder's choice. Peterson did, however, manage to score on Emmanuel Rivera's two-run single, rounding out Arizona's scoring for the night.

In the big leagues since 2014, Peterson has bounced around for nearly a decade. The veteran utility player has had stints with the San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics and was acquired by the Diamondbacks ahead of this season's trade deadline.

Peterson may not be a household name, but Pham gave him a moment he'll certainly never forget.

Gabriel Moreno, Ketel Marte Wow Fans as D-Backs Win Ws Game 2 vs. Rangers

After a dramatic Game 1 loss, the Arizona Diamondbacks bounced back in a 9-1 victory over the Texas Ranges to tie the World Series at 1-1.

Gabriel Moreno and Ketel Marte helped produce most of the Diamondbacks' offense, while starting pitcher Merrill Kelly threw seven innings of one-run ball.

Moreno continued his hot streak in the postseason, blasting a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to open up the scoring. After battling through seven pitches against Rangers starter Jordan Montgomery, the 22-year-old swung at the eighth and hit it nearly 413 feet.

Fans were amazed by the young catcher's power.

With the Diamondbacks leading 4-1 in the eighth inning, Marte cracked a two-run single to centerfield that helped break the game open. Corbin Carroll followed it up with his own RBI single, extending Arizona's lead.

This was Marte's 18th consecutive postseason game with a hit, giving him the longest streak in MLB history.

Baseball fans were impressed with the NLCS MVP's accomplishment.

With the next three games in Arizona, the Diamondbacks have a chance to win the World Series at home. They'll attempt to do so in Game 3, which is on Monday at approximately 8:03 p.m. ET.

Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald, Miguel Castro Roasted by MLB Fans After WS Loss to Rangers

It was Paul Sewald's time to pitch.

But it ended up being a rough time for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

So many times a clutch performer for the Diamondbacks over the second half of the season, Sewald blew the save in the team's 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series at Globe Life Field.

Up 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sewald gave up a massive two-run homer to Corey Seager that tied the game back up, sending Rangers' fans into delirium the second the ball came off the bat.

Sewald was huge in several tight games against the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS, but he came up short in the biggest spot of his career thus far.

The blown save set up another huge Adolis García moment in the bottom of the 11th inning, hitting a walk off solo homer against reliever Miguel Castro to seal the Rangers' first win in the World Series since 2011.

As for the Diamondback's, they'll have to wait a little longer for their own first win since 2001—when they last won the title.

And fans were ripping Sewald and Castro following the loss.

https://twitter.com/s_ab_r/status/1718118062757745009

The Diamondbacks will attempt to bounce back Saturday night in Game 2 and steal home-field advantage away from Texas before the series shifts back to Arizona for games 3-5.

Going behind 2-0 to an uber-confident Rangers' team is a recipe for disaster.

Diamondbacks' Torey Lovullo Calls on ESPN's Chris Russo to Retire: 'A Deal's a Deal'

Oct 27, 2023

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo must have been a tax collector in a past life.

Because that man has kept a long list of receipts from every single person that has doubted his squad en route to an appearance in the World Series after beating the heavily favored Philadelphia Phillies in seven games in the NLCS.

And Thursday, Lovullo came to collect from sports media legend Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, who should be headed to retirement since Arizona won.

"A deal's a deal," Lovullo said. "You can't back out of that one, 'Mad Dog.' You've got to do something. ... .I ain't going to forgive you until you do something unbelievable, maybe show up here and say you're sorry to the entire team. That's all I want to say about that."

Russo, an ESPN "First Take" and MLB Network "High Heat" personality, said on his radio show earlier this week that he'd retire if the Diamondbacks won the two games in Philadelphia after being down 3-2 earlier in the series.

Well, this is awkward.

The Diamondbacks have been using bulletin board material as fuel throughout their postseason run. After being the last team in for the playoffs, nobody believed they could have made it this far.

But it's Russo's comments in particular that have struck a chord with Lovullo's squad.

Russo isn't exactly willing to comply with Lovullo and hold up his end of the bargain.

He responded to the calls to retire during his show Thursday.

Whether or not Russo retires ultimately doesn't matter much. It's been a fun bit of banter between the two sides over the past few days.

The best thing the Diamondbacks can do is just keep him quiet. And what better way to do that than by winning it all against the Texas Rangers.
