Michigan Wolverines Thursday: Could 2 De-commits Have Saved Rich Rod's Job?

Oct 28, 2010

For those of you that don't care for RR you have a laundry list of reasons why:

  • Weird new offense
  • Really bad defense
  • Not a Michigan Man
  • Paying him too much money
  • Stretching too long before practice which lead to NCAA Violations
  • A bad record
  • Recruiting kids that are borderline academically
  • Piped in music at the Big House
  • Transfers
  • De-commitments

I'm sure you can list many more.  What's strange is maybe two QB de-commits could have saved his job.

Let's take a trip down memory lane, shall we?

The time is August 2008. Michigan will be starting a season where a walk-on and a non-mobile redshirt-freshman are Michigan's only options at QB. Though help was on the way through recruiting for the 2009 class.

Michigan had two four star QB's verbally committed to that class: Shavodrick Beaver a 6'3" 180-pound QB out of Wichita Falls, Texas and Kevin Newsome a 6'2" 225-pound QB from Portsmouth, Virgina.

Both of these guys had solved Michigan's future QB depth problems and now the Michigan coaching staff could focus on recruiting offensive line and defense.

Well, that good feeling at QB didn't last long as Newsome decided to de-commit from Michigan on August 19th and Beaver did the same in December. From a comfortable feeling to a really bad feeling.

Michigan went 0-2 on their QB recruits for 2009 but help was on the way. Tate Forcier a long time Michigan fan gave his verbal during the season and things were back on track.

Michigan still had only one QB recruit until signing day when Denard Robinson signed up.   So, you could say that Newsome and Beaver's decision to not join the Wolverines gave the opportunities for Forcier and Robinson to.

That is one interesting point. The other is what has happened to all four players since then.

  • Beaver is a back up at Tulsa and in two years has completed 5-of-9 passes for a total of 41 yards.
  • Newsome is third string at Penn State and 14-of-24 in two years for 144 yards.
  • Forcier was 165-of-281 for 2050 yards in 2009 and 30-of-39 for 349 yards in 2010.
  • Robinson was 14-of-31 for 188 yards in 2009 and 97-of-143 for 1319 yards in 2010.

Ironically, Michigan on Saturday could face (he is questionable due to a concussion) Robert Bolden a true freshman QB from the state of Michigan that picked Penn State after Devin Gardner verbally committed to the University of Michigan in the 2010 class.

My understanding is that Newsome is third string behind walk-on redshirt sophomore Matt McGloin. Tulsa on the other hand plays Notre Dame this weekend and "The Beaver" might see a few snaps.

It was clear that RR and staff did a great job in recruiting both Forcier and Robinson.

Will that recruitment save his job?  I think the next three weeks will go a long way in answering that question.

Buffalo Bulls (1-3) vs. Bowling Green Falcons (1-3)

Saturday, October 2nd, 3:30 PM EST

Line: Bowling Green -3 1/2

Bowling Green holds tight to what has been a promising passing connection between quarterback, Mike Shilz and Kamar Jorden. The Falcon’s receiver, Jorden is among the nation’s leaders in receptions with an astonishing 40 catches, four games into the season. Buffalo will look to Jorden and the Bowling Green offense down in this inner conference matchup.

Keys to the Games

* Buffalo has lost their last four games, in their recent loss against Connecticut, Davis threw three of his seven picks of the season. The team has a hard time winning because of the sophomore quarterback’s mistakes in moments of the game. Davis needs to get it together and restrict forcing some throws, because he’s been doing a great job finding the junior receiver Marcus Rivers. Marcus leads the team with 29 receptions for 365 yards and a touchdown.

* Bowling Green would’ve been easy favorite if it wasn’t for their terrible defensive group. The team is currently giving up 39 points per game this season; they’re ranked #112 in points allowed. Michigan lit them up last week for 65 points, while below-average teams such as Troy and Tulsa have also scored at least 30 points against them this season.

* Bowling Green is ranked 34th in passing yards so far this season. Most likely they will try and air it out to make a game out of this one. Buffalo’s defense isn’t anywhere near top-notch, but they do have a chance at weathering Bowling Green’s passing game if Schilz gets hurried.

While Bowling Green’s offense is liable to give up plenty of numbers, they should be able to contain the Buffalo Bull’s offense. They will need to keep a close guard on Buffalo’s leading receiver Rivers, while also looking to get the ball to their leader, Kamar Jorden.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Memphis Tigers

October 2nd 2010 7 PM EST

Line: Tulsa -9

Overview:

This is a game that isn’t going to be interesting unless you are an alumni, you go to the school, or you bet on it. I recommend you bet on it. The Golden Hurricane (that’s right, just one hurricane) takes on the Memphis Tigers in Memphis. This isn’t the Memphis team that they had together when Deangello Williams was gashing every defense he faced. Tulsa is 2-2, Memphis is 1-3, and both teams have yet to win a game in conference. In every football game, there is a winner and a loser, even if both teams are the latter.

Keys to the Game:

  • Tulsa has to continue to perform on offense. G.J. Kinne has played well, and he opens up the field for the ground game to get going. They have multiple backs that can get it done, ranking 16th in total rushing yards. Saying they rack up garbage stats in their losses isn’t necessarily true. Although they lost by a large margin against Oklahoma State, they lost by only two to East Carolina. The Tulsa offense isn’t the problem, their defense is just something to be desired.
  • Gregory Ray and Jerrell Rhodes are going to trample Tulsa. Tulsa has had no answer for any team they have faced this season. Ray and Rhodes share carries, and create a great running back tandem. There is no reason to think a team who allowed 51 to East Carolina will be able to shut down the running game that continues to impress in Memphis.
  • Tulsa doesn’t do well on the road. Last week’s momentum doesn’t carry over. I understand Tulsa may be the lesser of two evils here, but they are on the road. Memphis isn’t going to lay down. They want to give their student body a reason to come to the games. Tulsa has not won on the road yet. Memphis didn’t lose their only home game. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, it’s still early, but it could come into play.

Wrap Up:

The fact of the matter is both of these teams are going to show up on offense. If the over/under isn’t turned off come game day, take the over (unless it is 90+). Of all my sports picks this week, this one offers the most intangibles. I still see Memphis coming within one score at home.

After the Win over Northern Colorado

Sep 26, 2010

Another beautiful day for football and the Spartan Faithful..   45 – 7 over Northern Colorado…

Though we anticipated and were rewarded with a victory, from the stands, we’re left with some thoughts… about  some Stunning positives and some Blatant concerns…
Here they are in no particular order…..

1. Spartans head into Big Ten play undefeated.. and 2 wins away from Bowl eligibility…. First time since 2007 I think…

2. The Spartan Offense is looked primed for Big Ten play.. They will put points on the board.  The Skill players are talented, despite the lines softness in letting pressure through.

3. 532 yrds.  Of total offense.. 223 Rushing, 331 yards passing..  Spartans will score points, period.

4. Kirk Cousins went 16 – 20, Maxwell went 3 – 5…

5. LeVeon continues to huge yardage.. 92 yrds and 410 for the year. Baker is at 460 for the year, with 59 against the Bears…

6. Greg Jones.. STUD !   Two interceptions, and leads the Spartans in tackles with 33 for the year…

7. Defense looked better this week… 4 interceptions, but Zero sacks on a much smaller offensive line from a 1-AA school…

8. Maxell was sacked twice by that 1 – AA school….

9. Kicking: crappy…. I miss Swenson…  Heck there was one punt that lead to the only score for NCS, from the seats it looked as though it only went 20 -  25 yards tops.… its was bad…

10. Kick Offs.. Muma can’t get the ball in the end zone or within the 5… Is he too small ??

11. Penalties… Holy Mother Mary and Joseph…  11 for 121 yards.. that’s more distance then the entire length of the field.  Oh, by the way.... no more Personal Fouls.. I think I counted  5 of them ?

12. Fan Base in the stands.. this was the WORST game for fan support I have seen in a long time.. Many new faces, many ticket holders gave away this game to newbies.. it was terrible.. I give the people in the seats, bleachers and stands a big fat "D-"... It was embarrassing this week..

I called in to the WJR Post Game Live show with Jim Miller.. I listen to this show each and every week... Love these guys and their thoughts.. usually... This week tried to explain my concern about the sacks…and he wasn’t paying attention and tried to talk about the lack of Spartan Offensive sacks on the opponents, when the real concern is the Sacks the opponents have been laying  on the  Spartans.. Frankly, Spartans allowed only 14 sacks all 2009, so far they have allowed NINE in the first 4 games of 2010...

He did correct it finally, thanks Jim and Stayhorn!   And thanks Your response was right on… Jim’s response in a nut shell is that we have a line still in transition, and we’re working to still slot guys in… Unfortunately, This is apparent.. I'll call in next week Jim.. Lets see how the "O" line does and discuss it again...

It’s a good thing Maxwell got some reps today, since if Cousins continues to get pressured and sacked, he will be hurt at some time this season, and we will need a back up with some game experience…

Well it’s a win Spartans have some work to do….. And we will stay in the top 25….

And now on to Big Ten play and Wisconsin…
Note:
Wisky scored 70 points in their last game
Wisky had one (1) penalty last week.. ONE !
618 yrds total offence…
John Clay and James white both went over 100yrds rushing…

Buckle up Spartans, Big Ten is on the Horizon….

Sparty On !!

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

WEEK 3 EXPERT COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICKSAccuScore - Week 3 College Football Expert Picks
By Zach Rosenfield and Jonathan Lee, AccuScore

Here are Zach and Jon’s picks for Week 3 in college football.

Zach Rosenfield’s Picks
East Carolina +19 vs. Virginia Tech

19 points seems way to high here considering East Carolina has had a lot of early success with its wide open offense. While we figure Virginia Tech to be a strong favorite, the Hokies have already proven to be greatly overrated and struggle with their pass defense. We did not simulate their loss to James Madison because we do not cover FCS schools, but it is safe to say that we would have pegged them for the win. However, in the three games we have forecasted in 2010 involving the Hokies and Pirates, AccuScore is 3-0 ATS. Additionally, the computer is 64% ATS in selections where the home team is favored by 14 or more points (as is the case here).

Oklahoma State –6.5 vs. Tulsa
It’s hard to win if you can’t tackle and Tulsa cannot tackle. This is a game of contrasting styles that lends itself to Oklahoma State’s zone read option and power running game. While critics might be quick to remember OSU’s 2009 home loss to a finesse Houston team, Tulsa is not the team to replicate that. AccuScore is 3-1 this season ATS in games involving Tulsa and Oklahoma State and simulates the Cowboys to be an 11.5 point favorite.

Jon’s Picks
Cal -2.5 vs. Nevada

Nevada and quarterback Colin Kaepernick have looked terrific running their pistol offense the past three seasons – that is until they have to face a school from the six BCS conferences. Over the past three seasons Nevada has an 0-7 record against BCS schools averaging just 19 points per game in the process. The Wolf Pack has also gone 0-3 against Boise State during that time. The difference in the level of athlete appears to be a big factor in limiting Kaepernick and the pistol attack. Cal is not a team I was particularly high on before the season started, but the Bears are 2-0 and have put up 104 points. Quarterback Kevin Riley has completed 66% of his passes (which would be a career high) and has yet to throw an interception. True freshman Keenan Allen has proven to be the playmaking wide receiver Cal desperately needed. The line suggests that Vegas and bettors think Cal and Nevada are evenly matched. History tells me that’s far from the truth.

Kansas State -3.5 vs. Iowa State
Daniel Thomas is one of the best running backs in the nation. The junior was All-Big 12 last season rushing for 1,265 yards, and has already rushed for 371 yards on 49 carries this season (7.6 ypc). Kansas State’s entire offense revolves around Thomas which is bad news for Iowa State. The Cyclones ranked 10th in the Big 12 in rush defense last season allowing 166 yards per game. This year they look even worse against the run having allowed 431 yards on the ground through 2 games. Kansas State won this game by a point on the road last year. This year at home, look for Thomas to run all over the field on the way to a solid win.

Tulane vs. Ole Miss
Prediction: -20.5 -110 odds
Visit Touthouse.com for more expert college football predictions from Bryan Leonard

Every year it happens. A well known team loses to an BCS squad and all the doomsayers come out of the woodwork. That’s exactly what has happened to Mississippi. This is a team coming off back to back 9-4 seasons that had dominated Jacksonville State on the scoreboard in the first half leading 31-10 at intermission. Talk about a team on a mission this week and you find the Ole Miss Rebels. Mississippi was 3-0 ATS last year against non-conference foes covering each game by double digits.
Tulane hasn’t made any progress since the signing of Bob Toledo in 2007. The Green Wave has posted a 9-27 record in his tenure including 6-13 overall at home. Tulane is on a 5-13-1 spread run in the home dog role. This team has one of the worst home field advantages in the nation. The lineup is loaded with freshmen at key positions. Two linebackers, the kicker and punter all all extremely young and untested. The offensive line lacks depth which is really a problem going against a fired up SEC squad. Tulane lost at home last year to Tulsa by 24, BYU by 51 and Houston by 28. A very similar outcome is to be expected on Saturday. One Parent’s Perspective on BYU

Sep 9, 2010
Marveta Allen & Brian Logan

Marveta Allen & Brian Logan

People sometimes ask Marveta Allen why she would allow her son Brian Logan play football at Brigham Young University.  “Because that’s where God wants him,” Allen replies.

At just 5′6″ tall Brian was overlooked by Division 1 colleges coming out of Washington High School in Fremont, California.

He decided to attend Foothill Junior College and try to take his game to the next level.

With his work ethic, athletic ability, and performance on the field, Logan was named as an all-conference player as a freshman at Foothill.

During his sophomore year, he received that coveted scholarship offer from San Diego State.  But a coaching change after the 2008 season for the Aztecs left Brian and his family wondering if a new coaching staff would honor the offer.

They were to be disappointed.  “I remember the day we found out [the new coaching staff wasn't going to offer Brian the scholarship]; it was Martin Luther King Day, “  says Marveta.  “I told Brian that San Diego State is not where God wants you to go.  And literally an hour later, coach (Jamie) Hill called and wanted to come see him.

“Coach Hill told Brian that if you [commit to BYU], you’re going to get calls from other schools. He was right; the very next day Utah State called and offered him a scholarship.”

Later during a trip to the Provo campus, Marveta and Brian had the opportunity to meet privately with BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

“Bronco broke down everything for us, what was expected of a player and a student at BYU.  I don’t know if other coaches do that, but it made me feel good that Brian would be in good hands.  That was the icing on the cake.”

Allen was also impressed with the school’s honor code. “When Brian told me that the school has an honor code, that you couldn’t smoke or drink or have sex, I said that’s the place for you!”  Marveta chuckles.  “I had the biggest smile on my face when I found that out.”

Marveta raised Brian as a single mom, although she says she had a lot of help from relatives.  Brian’s biological father was also in his life as he was growing up.

Marveta was committed to raising her son in an atmosphere where he could learn good values.  “He went to a private Christian school when he was young,” says Allen.  “I’ve always been in a church and he came with me; that’s where he got his foundation.”

Still some may consider it quite a challenge for a non-Mormon, African-American to fit in at BYU.  For Marveta and Brian, any reservations they had were resolved by studying what the Church and its members believed and practiced prior to Brian arriving on campus.

“What I have taught him is that you have to respect other people’s religion,” explains Allen.  “I respect the Mormon religion.  I like that everything revolves around the family and that its members go out as missionaries.  They do a lot of things that I wish a lot of other Christian churches would do.”

Still, Brian found himself wanting for friendship for his first few weeks in Provo.  “He was lonely.  I encouraged him to buy a PlayStation 3 because he was bored, ” says Marveta.  “Later he started to hang out with some of his teammates and started to make some friends.”

Brian also experienced some up and downs on the field of play.  Despite his lack of height, Logan was named as the starting field corner for the Cougars.

He quickly became target for opposing offenses, who were looking to take advantage of him.  He also withstood criticism from fans and the media as he adjusted his game to the next level.  “I never worried about that.  He had to get adjusted in the beginning.  He’s just a powerhouse and he refuses to get beat,” says Marveta about Brian’s difficulties at the start of the 2009 season.

Utilizing his strength, sure tackling, solid coverage skills and his 36-inch vertical leap, Logan progressed  and improved as the season wore on.  He ended the year second in the nation in pass break-ups, totaled 44 tackles and hauled in three interceptions.  He also won over many BYU fans in the process.

Fans’ appreciation for his efforts were evidenced by the LaVell Edwards Stadium crowd chanting his name as he came off the field with an injury in the final home game against Utah.

The showing of affection for his son by fans was not lost on his mother.  “I have it on tape when he got hurt and the crowd was chanting his name.  Just to see that was really nice.  I just said ‘Wow’ when that happened,” says Marveta, who proudly plays that video to visitors in her home.

‘Everyone at my church watches BYU.  I’m sure that they will continue to watch even after Brian leaves BYU.  I know I will too.  I’m a fan!”

She says she’s also a fan of her son and the attitude he has displayed through everything. Particularly how he handled being disciplined by the BYU coaches during the Utah State game last year. Brian was made to sit the bench for most of the game for violation of team rules.

Instead of sulking or taking it personally, Brian made it a point to be front and center encouraging and congratulating his teammates throughout the game. “That was the proudest moment, the way he got out there and cheered on his teammates. That was a Kodak moment for me.”

One thing that many Cougar fans do not know about Brian is that he played the entire 2009 season with a hernia in his groin. Allen says that it was an injury that he sustained during his sophomore season at Foothill and was not properly diagnosed until after the end of his junior year at BYU.  He underwent surgery to fix the problem this past January.

Now fully healthy, and with a year of experience at BYU under his belt, Logan is prepared for a new role in 2010 – that of being a leader on a Cougar team looking for its fifth-consecutive, 10-plus win season.

“He says that he is having the time of his life,” says Allen.  “The welcome he has received has played a big part of him being successful.  I ask him all the time, can you imagine if you were at San Diego State?  We believe God closed the door at San Diego State and opened the door at BYU, and it was as clear as water where he should be.”
