Amir Sadollah Returns Next Month Against Brad Blackburn

Dec 8, 2009

Fresh off his unanimous decision victory over veteran brawler Phil Baroni at UFC 106, Amir Sadollah will be going right back into action less than two months later. The TUF 7 winner will reportedly face Brad Blackburn in the main card of UFC Fight Night 20 (January 11th; Fairfax, VA); the event will be headlined by Nate Diaz vs. Gray Maynard.

Sadollah's professional record currently stands at a mere 2-1, including his submission win over CB Dollaway at the TUF 7 Finale and his 29-second TKO loss to Johny Hendricks in August. By contrast, Blackburn has 28 pro fights under his belt and is currently 3-0 in the UFC. "Bad Brad" most recently won a split-decision over Edgar Garcia at the TUF 9 Finale in June, despite being the recipient of the Gnarliest Punch Face of 2009. Blackburn also holds notable victories over Jay Hieron, Ryo Chonan, and Chris Wilson. Will Amir rise to the challenge, or is he straight-up outgunned here?

Speaking of Sadollah's old foe CB Dollaway, the Doberman also has his next appearance booked, as he's scheduled to meet Goran Reljic at UFC 110 in February.

Weis Fired, Rumor Mill Churning Full Speed

Nov 30, 2009

So, Weis was officially fired today, immediately launching the media frenzy that will be the search for his replacement.

Within minutes of the announcement, I saw conflicting reports on the Internet regarding my favorite (Bob Stoops).

KTUL.com (Tulsa, OK) is reporting that the Irish and Bob Stoops have verbally agreed on contract terms.

OU Insider is reporting that Bob Stoops was quoted this afternoon as saying he would be back next year as the head coach of the Sooners.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Meyer is absolutely not interested in the job, quoting Tebow, Urban, and his wife Shelley this week as stating he's not interested.

I haven't found anything yet on Brian Kelly rumors.

I'll try to update events as they unfold.

There will be a press conference at 6 p.m. today at the University of Notre Dame. I will try to sneak away from work to watch and post an update shortly after.

UPDATE: Stoops saying he will stay at Oklahoma story gaining steam, being reported on multiple outlets, including ESPN, AP, etc. Looks like my top dog has fallen out of the race.

UPDATE: Here's the transcript of Stoops' comments. Taken as a whole, this doesn't sound like a guy that is definitely staying put.

(Stoops): "The questions come up and like I always say I fully intend to be at Oklahoma, hopefully for a good while. You never know what the good lord brings you, but in the end I couldn't be more excited about, even through a tough year, the good quality kids we're working with and the great people here that I work with daily in our administration and you know I can't help with all that's said, but in the end, the players I'm recruiting understand that that's what I'm excited about and that's what I intend to do."

(Reporter): "There is officially an opening at Notre Dame. So, you're not going there?"

(Stoops): "What I am saying is I intend to be at Oklahoma, that's the only place that right now, yes that I am, what I'm looking to do. I will never confirm or deny whether I talk or not talk to anybody. And, I won't be interviewing for any jobs."

(Reporter): "I'm not asking if you talked to anybody."

(Stoops): "Well I just said all that."

(Reporter): "What I'm asking is can you tell me right now that you won't go to Notre Dame?"

(Stoops): "What I'm saying is that I'm going to be at Oklahoma next year. So I can't be in two places at once."

(Reporter): "Well then why not just say no?"

(Stoops): "Because I don't like the way you worded it. So, in the end, I told you what I intend to do. If Joe (Castiglione) and President Boren will have me, that's what I'm going to do. And that's where it's at."

(Reporter): "How would you have worded it?"

(Stoops): "Not like you, obviously."

For my money, I think Stoops is ready to take the ND job after reading that. He is tap dancing all over the place.

Painkiller Dependency Spurred Karo Parisyan's Latest Fight Withdrawal

Nov 20, 2009

(Melanson and Parisyan, before it all fell apart. Props: elitefts.com)

In a new interview with Five Ounces of Pain, Karo Parisyan's longtime friend and training partner Neil Melanson confirmed that Parisyan's latest last-minute fight-cancellation was directly related to the painkiller addiction that has haunted him for years. After Melanson got permission from Karo to go public with the story, he laid it all out:

“Karo’s had some problems with an addiction to pain medicine due to an injury he sustained a few years ago. Then when he started having these anxiety problems, it didn’t seem like the anxiety pills were helping him. The only thing that was helping him was the pain medication that he had been taking for his injuries. That’s when he just started down that slope. It’s just one of those situations where you have two guys that sit down to have a drink, and you have one guy that can go home and he’s fine, and the other guy has to go out and get wasted every single time because he’s an alcoholic. I think that maybe with the pills, that Karo is the second guy. Maybe he’s the guy that can’t take them here and there, or can’t use them effectively...

He told me that he was on pain medicine, but he wanted to get off. He had a plan and he was working his way to get off of it. About a month ago he was taking about half the amount that he usually does and he was pretty optimistic. He was really trying to push it. He was going through some withdrawals and he would try to push it as hard as he could to get off the stuff. He really had a plan to be off three weeks prior to the fight and he really wanted to clean up. He really wanted to do this right. It was really important to him and his family. I hadn’t spoken to him for just a little bit, and I guess he tried, but he couldn’t.

Yes, rain is expected to be in the forecast for tonight’s game in Oxford, but the wind will be negligible. This will allow QBs Zach Maynard and Zac Dysert the ability to still easily navigate their offenses down the field.

Buffalo has been much better on the offensive side of the ball all season long. Offense hasn’t been a problem for HC Turner Gill’s club in ’09 as it ranks 32nd overall in total yards (413.9 YPG) and 30th overall passing the ball (255.6 YPG), but it’s had problems putting points on the board coming in ranked 86th overall scoring an average of just 23.8 PPG. Going up against MOH’s 74th ranked overall and 107th ranked scoring defense should help them cap nice drives with points.

Where Buffalo has faltered in ’09 is on the defensives die of the ball. Defensively, they rank 60th in the country in yards allowed (356.8 YPG) and 75th in scoring defense (26.2 PPG). They were torched by BG QB Tyler Sheehan a couple weeks ago, and will be facing the RedHawks Zac Dysert who will be looking to atone for his awful performance at home vs. BG last week. Going into last week’s game with the Falcons, Dysert was one of the hottest QB’s in the MAC. He’ll no doubt look to revert back to form in this his final game of the season. The fact that BUF has allowed an average of 220.5 PYPG this season leads me to believe he’ll cap off his 2009 campaign with another 300+ night and 3-4 TD passes.

Though WR Naaman Roosevelt will be held out of this one, I still foresee Buffalo flourishing offensively. Same goes for Miami (OH) who should have a better go of it in their home finale. UB will be looking for its first ever win in Oxford, but it won‘t come easy. The over has cashed in each of their L/4 meetings and I look for that streak to extend by one tonight!

Play: Buffalo/Miami (OH) Over

Free Pick: New Mexico -3.5
On Tuesday the free play in college hoops is on New Mexico. Game 741 at 9:00 eastern. New Mexico is a solid 18-1 vs losing teams, covering 12 of 16 in lined games. They are 5-1 vs the WAC conference and 19-6 ats after allowing 60 or less. New Mexico St. is a terrible 2-8 as a home dog in this range, 6-12 after allowing 80 or more and have not fared well vs winning teams at 11-23. Lay the number tonight with New Mexico. In late phone action we have NBA and NCAA hoops. Jump on and cash out on Tuesday night. RV. - Courtesy of Rob Vinciletti

Free Pick: Arkansas LR vs. Tulsa Over 121.5
The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes are a team that can score the basketball early and often, so getting this low of a number looks like a nice value. Arkansas Little Rock is likely to try to slow it down at first, but I expect Tulsa to get way ahead and then Little Rock will probably stop with the stalling of the game. This one probably goes to around 130, so over 121.5 is the play here. - Courtesy of Kyle Hunter

Free Pick: SMU -6
After winning just one game last year, June Jones has the 5-4 Mustangs in a position to get Bowl eligible. Hard to figure the Miners who beat Tulsa and Houston at home but are just 1-3 SU and ATS on the road with losses at Memphis and Tulane. Couldn’t find a worse spot in second of three roadies. Swallow hard knowing SMU is 0-6 L6 as a fave and rushes for less than 100 ypg but … the Miners give up a whopping 467 (211/256) ypg and 144 points in their last three road games. Last week, SMU took a half to get going against Rice. Razor sharp Mustangs roll 45-24. - Courtesy of Dennis Macklin

Free Pick: Nebraska vs. Kansas Under 43
Last week we used Oklahoma/Nebraska under as the Free Play and were rewarded with an easy 10-3 winner. Right back with Nebraska here as the Blackshirts are in mid-90’s form allowing 10.3 ppg, allow just 93 ypg overland, and just 272 ypg overall. The Jayhawks have gone in the tank with four straight losses and just 44 points in their last three games. Don’t see the Jayhawks getting ten here and the Huskers on offense would be life and death to get 24 against Delaware State. Play the Under. - Courtesy of John Anthony

Setting a schedule of 12 games in as many weeks doesn’t make sense for a program that faces the challenges that the Commodores do, not having nearly enough depth or athleticism to hang through those S.E.C. battles. And taking on Georgia Tech outside the conference only exacerbates those issues. Now we find them in game #11 of their arduous slate, and having faced the physical ground games of first Tech and then Florida the past two weeks makes this a much tougher setting than the oddsmakers are calling for. Kentucky not only got a chance to coast vs. Eastern Kentucky last week, but it gave Derrick Locke the opportunity to take a week off, and also provided a terrific setting for young QB Morgan Newton to continue to develop his confidence. The return of Trevard Lindley in the secondary also makes a big difference this week, and having won at Auburn and nearly done the same at South Carolina (they were a missed two-pointer from going to O.T.) the Wildcats have shown the road moxie to handle this trip. TAKE KENTUCKY MINUS HERE.

Houston vs. Central Florida Odds, Pick & Point Spread: November 14th 2009

Nov 12, 2009

Houston vs. Central Florida
Free Pick: Houston -4.5 -110 odds - point spreads
Visit Touthouse.com for more expert college football picks from Wunderdog Sports

This is a big challenge for Central Florida as they have an offense that ranked dead last of all teams last year. They have moved up this season, but not by much as they rank 109 out of 120 teams. While the defense remains the stability of this team, they are going to see more offensive firepower here than they have seen all season. Houston had the best offense in football last year and sits atop again this season at 42 points per game. The Cougars’ offense is for real as they have played against three BCS Conference schools and averaged 35 points against them! Against anyone else, the offense has been even better at 45.6 ppg. These teams didn’t meet a year ago, but as a marker of UCF against an elite offense, the Knights were torched for 49 vs. Tulsa last year with their No. 43 ranked defense. This year their defense has dropped to No. 56. I find it difficult to believe that they can keep this Houston team away from 40, and the Knights have reached the 30 mark just three times in the last two years. I’m going with Houston in this one.
